Thursday scent of the day 9/9

Posted by Robin on 9 September 2021 210 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also Leo Tolstoy’s birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I’m taking Karl points in Annick Goutal Nuit Étoilée.

Reminder: 9/10 is Karl Lagerfeld's birthday. Wear a Karl Lagerfeld fragrance, or a fragrance from his stints at other fashion houses (Chloe, Chanel, etc). Or, wear a fragrance he wore (scroll down, although I am sure he wore other fragrances as well...feel free to investigate).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Tilda Swinton for Chanel's Pre-Fall 2013 Paris-Edimbourg Métiers d'Art campaign.

Last week someone (I forgot who!) had the genius idea of storing masks in a box with sample vials. Of course I had to overcomplicate things, so I got a few 5×7 plastic photo-storage boxes (a standard mask is about 4×7) and tucked a few disposable masks into each, along with a couple of cotton pads sprayed with a scent.

It worked perfectly, and now I have masks that give me whiffs of Stetson, Casual Friday, and today, though I am otherwise commando, Mitsouko. I don’t know if anyone else can smell it, but I can, and that’s all that matters.

I do something similar with my handbags! I scent a cotton round and toss it in my day bag whenever I remember in the morning.

It sure does! I’m on my way home from work, I’ve been masked for about 7 hours, and I can still smell Mitsouko. Talk about bang for your buck!

    MFK Aqua Universalis Forte
Wanted a fresh quiet scent for a rainy day at home. I went for Sous le Vent initially but changed my mind last minute.

I finish Sally Rooney’s new book the other day. I was not disappointed. I am a huge fan of her other work, so if you don’t enjoy that style, you won’t enjoy this one either. I remember one friend telling me how annoyed she was that Rooney doesn’t use quotations in dialogue, so she gave up all together.
Taking a book pause for the moment. I think I have a book hangover 🙂

Thanks for the report! I’ll have to join the endless queue for the book at the library. I haven’t read her other books, just reviews, and wasn’t sure exactly what in her style seemed to put people off. I can the the quotations thing being annoying, but I’m something of a grammar nerd. I’d like to see what I think, though. 🙂

Congratulations on getting through a book, which for me is something of a minor achievement! I’ve got two upstairs, one that is on its second renewal. Somehow there’s just never time to sit and read.

I find that a long commute (about an hour each way) does wonders for my book consumption. I’m getting through about 6-7 books per month.

Ah, yes, I miss the commute for that! I used to have 45 min each way, but now that I’m “flex” my commute is 15 seconds. 🙂 My podcast and book consumption has fallen off dramatically.

I would say certain aspects of her books make me relive my youth 😉
I agree with the NYT when they wrote “…kind of plotless un-novel we’re growing accustomed to. ” I think that describes Rooney’s work perfectly.

In Chanel 28 La Pausa EdT. I found a full 5ml decant yesterday, when still in the process of purging and organizing my collection. I don’t even remember where this came from, but after sadly finishing my full bottle a couple of months ago, I am happy to keep enjoying this gorgeous scent for a little longer.

    Happy almost Friday! ?

I’m so curious about the EdP of this. Does it last longer? I loved the EdT, but it was too fleeting to contemplate getting more.

The EdP lasts longer than the EdT, which was also very fleeting on me. As much as I love it, I am not planning to replace my already gone bottle.

You smell lovely. 28 LP was one of those fragrances that I didn’t get/like at first. It’s now one of my favorites. I treasure the 200ml bottle I found on eBay a few years ago.

28LP was love at first sniff for me and my introduction to the iris world. For many years it was my favorite iris scent, until I discovered SL Iris Silver Mist, my absolute iris love so far. I still love28 LP, but I have plenty of iris perfumes to add it to my collection again. But if a bottle falls in my lap it will be happily welcome!

I am scent twins with Robin today in Nuit Etoilee, and can only claim CP points if accidental compliance counts. After loving Gardenia Passion yesterday (and very much liking Eau d’Hadrian on Tuesday even tho I forgot to post about it) I wanted to continue my Goutal week and this was the next sample in line.

This one feels like a Phd level scent, whereas my comprehension level is still very much undergrad. I get cold violets, but I think the combo of the mint and iris is creating that impression. It smells cold without creating a cooling sensation in my nose, which is interesting; I usually get a physical cooling reaction to mint. I get the pine, but not the fir. It gives off a Chanel 19 vibe, like this is the 2nd cousin from the northern woods. I imagine this is how the Lady’s Cottington’s fairies would have smelled (before she pressed them). I want to revisit this one after my ability to discern and describe has improved, tho I don’t see myself wearing it with regularity.

Drinking Earl Grey and gearing up for a day jam packed with meetings.

SOTD is Slow Explosions yet again! I don’t think I’m doing yard work today so I won’t worry about it wearing off. Got to give props to lush’s all good things. SOTD is Rose Praline- recent blind buy which I swore I wouldn’t do again. A bit risky and I’m still deciding how I feel about it. From up close i can’t smell much but in the air it smells very nice but it’s subtle. Maybe I’m partly anosmic to something.

Also a sample spritz on one hand of Tendre est la Nuit Claire from Madja Bekkali- incense and amber, smells really nice. Warming up to churchy incense. Has anyone smelt perfumes from this line?

Ooh, I’d be happy to take some of that Rose Praline off your hands. I wonder if it’s been reformulated at all? I seem to recall that it was off the market for a few years.

I got it from a very nice online shop called Parfumaria. They still sell it with other Rosine perfumes and other interesting brands. But it’s not listed in the Rosine website so it seems to have been discontinued.

The whiffs I get from my t-shirt are lovely- if subtle- but when I sprayed in my hand I didn’t smell that much- odd! Did you find it a loud perfume? I will let you know if I decide to swap 😉

I didn’t have the experience you’re having of disappearing on skin, which is odd indeed. I haven’t smelled it in a few years, but contemplated a FB just long enough that it was no longer available (as one does,,,) I think you’re in the UK, yes? which would create swapping difficulties as I’m in the US. Hope you warm to your bottle ?

Yes and that’s a shame! I’m sure it’s not been reformulated and it’s just my nose- it often lets me down with musks and other molecules. But the more I smell it the more I like it- so have some hope:)

This is the link to the shop if you wanted to give it a try https://en.parfumaria.com/rose-praline-100-ml-edp. I looked it up and seems reliable and established. They sent me extra samples and a little note too! They probably ship to America ( living in the post Brexit UK I also had to pay custom tax- but not excessive).

Waiting to hear from the emergency vet on T-Rex this morning. We were out camping when she decided to eat an oyster shell for some unknown reason. Drove over an hour to get to the vet while she coughed, hacked, and wretched. Ugh. Bad night. More x-rays this morning and I’ll hopefully be able to pick her up this morning.

The flip side is I had a long hot shower that I didn’t have to keep feeding quarters into. Also, decided this weekend I’m going to cut my hair into a shag by following the brad mondo method. Fingers crossed I don’t end up looking like a complete fool! ??

Hi everyone, I’m finally back on my feet after getting clobbered by the (non-Covid) bug my son brought home from school — fortunately he only had sniffles for a couple of days. I’m still too congested to smell much of anything but I’m in a spritz of Après l’Ondée, even though it’s avant l’ondée here. Enjoying the buttery air and interesting sky and keeping fingers crossed for no fire starts today!

Ah, what a relief, though bummer about the (non-lethal) bug. I guess it’s a good reminder to get our flu shots! Hope your sense of smell returns soon and the fires don’t.

Replica Beach Walk, a travel spray I bought some time after I realized every time I spritzed it on in Sephora, some random person would compliment me. Rarely happens to me. Jour Ensoleille and Ambre de Merveilles are others.

3rd times a charm on getting guest bed set up. Putting our queen air mattress atop the platform frame made it way too high for a 5’2” visitor. Tried various combos and ended up with a cheaper, lower air mattress covered with foam topper on the frame. It works. Now to get all the cleaning done.

TDC Sel de Vetiver today. We’ve had some warm temperatures lately, so went with a scent I think of as summery as a last hurrah.

Fingers crossed, I may actually be able to use almost all of my kitchen by the weekend. However, I will have nowhere to put my trash and recycling, which is a drawback. Found out this week that the designer had promised a particular drawer under the sink for them, then neglected to think about it when he ordered a really deep sink and had the plumber buy a huge new garburator. Now there’s no space for anything under the sink, and nowhere to put the garbage. Considering that this particular undersink drawer was most of the reason why I wanted to go with custom cabinets on that wall, I lost it a bit on Tuesday night (not in front of the designer, thankfully, just in front of the family). It also didn’t help that we found out on Tuesday that the designer had us buy $500 in final sale materials that the plumber says we don’t need. Ugh. Still waiting for a solution to be proposed to the trash issue, but my spouse is threatening to put the ugliest trash can ever out into the middle of the kitchen every time the designer comes to do photos. 🙂 Reno fun!

Yeah, Vancouver. 🙂 I suspect the clever solution is going to cost even more money…sigh. The designer is trying to dodge answering that email by snowing me under with other issues.

I have the same under sink issue but in reverse – I desperately wanted a garbage disposal, but my kitchen is so small and badly laid out the only place to put the trash is under the sink, so I have trash cans but no disposal.

You know, if he’d told me the garburator was going to mean we couldn’t put in the trash cans, I would have done without the garburator and been fine.

Our under-sink area is pretty unusable too, so we found free-standing stainless steel units for the trash and recycle. Ours are by Real Simple and have foot pedals to open them. If your appliances are something other than stainless steel, there are probably other free-standing bins out there that would blend … assuming you have floor space somewhere for them. Or if you’re lucky enough to have a walk-in pantry, there might be a way to put at least the recycle bin in there. Good luck!

Was going to wear something Russian in honor of Leo Tolstoy and Enchanted Forest was on my mind. But for some reason I am hoarding that bottle that is number 1. Number 2 is that I want an FB of Swan Princess so bad… Could have worn that too from my samples. Anyways, ended up in Chinatown. Oh I smell lovely!!
Currently awaiting a package with my very first order of Molton Brown. I am running out of shower gel so instead of running to CVS I bought my shower gel in Fiery Pink Pepper online. I learned about Molton Brown through NST and my fellow perfumistas who seem to like this line. So I treated myself too!! Molton Brown seems like a “perfumista go to” brand for bath and body products…

I’m wearing Ange Muse today. It’s a bit much in the heat but I only sprayed once. Like ockeghem I’m in the middle of a kitchen reno and everything smells like sawdust and has sawdust on it. Sears has postponed delivery of the stove for a third time, it must be supply chain issues, but the old ugly one works okay so I won’t be without a stove when the reno is done.

Had a horrible morning techwise. Was up at 5:30 for an international meeting–I was in pearls with my hair up before 6, and then bammm! No internet. First I kept getting kicked off the call every time my internet flickered, and then it gave up the ghost entirely. No phone or tv (could care less about the tv, but it was interesting to note) for two hours. The meeting ended about 20 minutes before my internet service returned. Arghhhhhh!

Anyhooo. I can’t even remember what perfume I put on when I got dressed. I banished any dainties away with a generous blast of Habinita to cheer me up after the meeting debacle.

Nice enough, but if I want soapy, I have lots of Caleche, which is more interesting than this. It also goes a tiny bit play-doh on me. I’ll finish the sample, but don’t need to purchase.

Question for those that have who have had Covid: If you lost your sense of smell for a very long time and regained function, how did you do it? I seem to remember someone posting they forced themselves to smell something every day.
Did your sense of taste return? Any ideas? I’m asking for a super nice person (not me, for sure!)

I told my mom to start practicing smelling things around the house – vanilla, coffee beans, herbs from the garden, freshly cut orange – and make notes each day of what she could smell. Afaik it worked, and from the beginning discovered she could smell more than she thought, possibly because they were familiar scents.

Wearing Le Plus Beau Jour de ma Vie to bed- which I panick bought with the Guerlain discontinuation news. It smells like bubblegum in a very nice way.

Grey day today, with gentle rain. However, where I live more moisture is a bad thing right now, so I wish that the rain would go somewhere it is wanted/needed.

SOTD = yep, more Encens Jinhae. It’s been nice having a reliable, grab and dab scent for the past week.

I will take your gentle rain. No storms though!

Nope, no storms included. The stormy weather was last night, and to the west of where I am. It seems that particular storm front fell apart by the time it reached me.

I did not even hear the rain last night. Today was just ugly gray.

No CP points today, as I’m wearing 4160 Tuesdays’ An Excess of Carelessness (unless that title can be said to refer to KL, lol!), but I’ll wear Chanel something tomorrow. Lead contenders are No. 19, No. 22, and Cristalle.

No. 22 was the first Chanel I ever bought for myself, in my 20s! Portia says I was precocious.

HdP 1804 for me today. We are three weeks into the fall semester and I am just…so…tired.

Anna Karenina would have worn Tilda’s coat.

Started out the day in a few sprays of Oolang Infini. It was pretty non-descript so will go into the purge box for now.

Just showered and have applied hajusuuri levels of Chanel No. 19 Poudre.

Does the Poudre flanker also provide liquid armor for you? Or not so much?

For me it’s a quieter, more relaxing scent; not as green as Chanel No. 19 edt. It’s great for evenings and bed time.

Woo hoo. Would you believe when I first got interested in Atelier Cologne, the first one I asked to smell was Oolang Infini and I could not smell anything. I ended up getting the soap.

I do believe it! The last time I wore it was probably last year but I thought I could detect some tea. Today it was mostly faint citrus notes then nothing else.

Woohoo! It’s lightly spicy caramelly sweet chocolate orange vanilla!

Far be or for me to complain, but I will. I have a dear friend who retired early because her job got impacted by COVID. She spends 6 months in Florida and 6 months in New Jersey. Right now she’s in NJ. She’s quite the social butterfly, but again, COVID impacted that. Lately, she had been texting me during the day. Now I don’t think she expects me to respond right away but I’m my circle, people text usually for more urgent items or an invitation to some get-together (and even these usually get sent in the evening). I have decided not to engage during my workday but I do respond after. BTW, I have different rules with my sisters because an interesting item for sale is news for us, especially if one of us is placing an order. Thoughts?

I will be of no use to you at all, because I still correct my own spelling errors before I send a text! And I was appalled to learn that younger folks these days break up with each other via text. And then there’s the whole “ghosting” thing. We are all doomed.

Very true! I follow someone on IG who said that a recent follower asked her how to get past the NYT Cooking section pay wall and once the other person got the answer, started ghosting her.

Texts or phone calls are more urgent than emails. That was an informal rule my brother and I decided on a few years ago. Having said that, I refuse to sign up for any texts from businesses or stores. I don’t need that kind of aggro.

I have very few texts from shops. I do get emails from meh dot com and sometimes they have very good deals. I receive the emails around 8am and if the item looks like my sisters could be interested, I text them.

I send conversational messages by email or fb messenger. Texts are reserved for urgent things. If it’s dire, a phone call.
