Thursday scent of the day 9/2

Posted by Robin on 2 September 2021 274 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday, and happy 57th to Keanu Reeves. (More birthdays: Horace Silver, Salma Hayek, Billy Preston.) What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: day 2 of banana, in Comptoir Sud Pacifique Vanille Banane.

Reminder: 9/3 will be Labor Day Weekend...take a break from community projects and wear what you want.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Omg, how can Keanu be 57?! Does not seem possible.
I’m in Eau des Merveilles for another beautiful morning here. I’m off to meet a friend for tea. We haven’t seen each other in 2 years, in person, it will be good to catch up.
I got a new phone yesterday and I’m…not really sure I like it.? I hate that anxious feeling I get when I feel like I’ve done something I immediately regret. I went from an iPhone 8 to a 12 mini and I’m already missing that home button. My daughter tells me I’ll get used to it. I’ll see. Receipt says I have 14 days to return.

I also changed phones this year. Give it some time, you will enjoy the new features and the camera and all things iPhone. Listen to your daughter ;)

I felt the same way about the iPhone 12 and really like it now, just my two cents.

I have a 12 maxi and also miss my home button, but you’ll get used to it. It’s not as convenient but tolerable.

And I felt anxiety a year ago when I feared I’d not be able to find an android phone smaller than a small tablet and weighing less than a concrete block. “Mini” sounds great ?

I do love the size! I’m the same, did not want a phone the size of a tablet. I have an iPad for that.

As much as it’s a modern convenience, I dislike changes to my phone. My BIL works for Apple, he started as a developer and worked his way up the food chain. I am forever complaining to him how lately Apple is developing products that are not taking the average (non-tech savvy) end user/consumer in mind. What seems like common sense and a practicality to a tech-savvy person, may not be for people like me.

And of course, that their products are prohibitively expensive! Mr. SmokeyToes has a less expensive smart phone which at some point, I’ll switch over to. His costs $140.

That, and they are always changing things. This new phone comes with a new charging cable but no “brick” to plug it into the wall. The new cord won’t work in my car either (which has a standard USB port). I can still using my old charging cable, so why change it at all?? Doesn’t make sense to me but I’m not that tech savvy.

I still haven’t activated the new smart phone I purchased months ago. The “old” phone I have still seems to work, so I am procrastinating the changeover.

      Plus, life.

After all the talk of Annick Goutal yesterday, I am in my beloved Songes
I smell like ? and beautiful flowers

I have been doing my makeup these days, putting my best face forward

Last night and tonight I am having my zoom meetings with the teachers for this coming school year. Amazing, one year later and these strict policies are still in place. I am not going to let myself go to the dark side so I will stop here

I love Songes. I am glad I have kept my bottles since its harder to find here in the US. I am still lemming the anniversary bottles, not sure if you saw them on Robins daily lemming.

This morning Mr L went running and saw northbound FDR was completely closed and cars were stranded on the side over night.
Today, the skies are so blue and beautiful like nothing ever happened.

I’m wearing Kevin Aucoin’s Sensual Skin Enhancer Foundation, mixed with sunscreen. It’s my ‘your skin but better’ look.

I open my closet and look at all the pretty clothes I no longer have any place to wear, my cosmetics and jewelry just sit in the drawers. My hair is in a deep depression. I am hoping this winter in San Diego will help me see a way out of this dark tunnel.

The other day I complimented a woman on how nice she looked. ( dress, accessories, hair.. all perfect) she says ” thanks, believe me if I hadn’t just come from church I would look like you do”) lol! I don’t think she meant to insult me, so I could laugh and am telling you to hopefully give you a laugh. ?❤??

Inspired by Gail yesterday, I am wearing carrot seed oil mixed with unscented body lotion. None of the most carroty iris perfumes beats the beauty of the carrot seed oil.

Gorgeous sunny, windy and cool morning in the lower 60’s, after a crazy stormy, rainy night due to the remnants of Ida. The floods
are unbelievable and public transportation in NY is still not back to normal. I am glad that I don’t have to go to work yet. I will take a walk later and run some quick errands nearby early this afternoon.
Having my second cup of coffee with slices of Italian bread, fresh tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil.

    Happy almost Friday! ?

My favorite is toasted Italian bread, two slices open faced, bottom layer is either chorizo or salami, top is fresh tomatoes. Add salt and drizzle with olive oil, eat and forget your worries.

I can see where you might think that. My thoughts when it was out was that it was an airy, light vanilla. My decant of SDV was enjoyed enough to purchase. The VS has aged to a perfect darkness-to me anyway. There’s always Miami Duppy for a good substitute, too.

I do have an affinity for the moon bottles. Brings lots of very happy memories.?

Good morning all! Commando today — my son woke up sick this morning so we’re having a day off school/day off work day and I’m not at all in the mood for fragrance. Scheduled him a Covid test for tomorrow and apparently wait times for results are currently up to a week! So, might be locked down for a while. Fingers and toes crossed that it doesn’t get worse than sniffles and fever.

SOTD = LADDM. This is just a brilliant perfume. I don’t always enjoy wearing it – I have to remember that this is 1-2 spritz max scent – any more is overwhelming. Today is cooler, and I did 2 sprays, and it is just perfect. Shalimar, Mohur Extrait, LADDM, maybe Chanel No.5 – these are perfect expressions of their genres, I would say. I have other scents I really like, but no others I can think of come up to this scale of artistry. What other perfumes seem absolutely perfect to people?

You have convinced me to give LADDM a try. I tried his ACCD and it wasn’t for me, so I’ve shied away from LADDM, but I want to smell a “perfect expression of a genre” even if I end up never actually wearing it. :)

If you didn’t warm to ACCD, you might feel similarly about LADDM. The original is drier with more movement, but the overall concept and notes are very much the same.

I expected to love ACCD, but there is something in there that triggers throat spams and general dismay, so I don’t like it at all! To me they are very very different….but again, allergies…

        2 September 2021 at 3:23 pm

I have LADDM labeled as Cedar, (dry sharp woody smoky) but it really is sort of a totally unique thing! I recently bought Nishane Ani, which has enough cedar dry woody in it to seem to me to be related, but Ani is a much more civilized version with sweeter elements as well.
I break my scents up by main note that pops for me – Woods, broken down into Cedar, Sandalwood, Oud, and Papyrus; Incenses – Nag Champa, Cathedral Style, Silk Road style; Florals – Rose, Carnation, Iris, OB, Tuberose, Wisteria, and a general Spring/Summer florals group; Amber – Ambergris heavy, and “new” Ambers; Vanilla – ETOH Vanillas, Sugar Vanillas, Classic orientals that have a lot of vanilla in them; and Chypres – Mitsouko, and things that try to smell like Mitsouko on some level…but my allergies distort what I smell and whether it smells good to me at any point in time, so if you asked me later, I might say something different.

Oh Mitsouko – I forgot that that is another perfect example of a genre!

          I like your system!

In response to your query, I always think of No 19 as the perfect expression of “perfume.” No genre just the concept of an abstract scent that’s not meant to replicate something in nature.

Good morning. I am wearing Hermes Twilly Poivre. It’s one of the few fragrances I grabbed right before we evacuated. We live west of New Orleans, and we got slammed by Hurricane Ida. We rode out the storm in our house, but with no power or running water, we decided to leave and took my father in law and mother in law with us. The good news is that we are fine.

My husband and I emptied our freezer and refrigerator from our home into our ice chest and I had a breakfast of leftover string bean casserole for breakfast this morning. It is very interesting the stuff I put into my freezer and forgot about.

I feel so fortunate that we were able to get out. My heart goes out to the ones who were so badly affected by this terrible storm.

Morning all, my SOTD is Eau de Camille by Annick Goutal. Poor night’s sleep, two hours, no amount of coffee will fix it. Smokey is on my lap and won’t get off, he knows mommy isn’t at her best today.
I’m wearing Chanel mascara, Edward Bess cream blush (color is the discontinued Love Affair), and Kevin Aucoin’s Sensual Skin Enhancer Foundation, mixed with sunscreen. It’s my ‘your skin but better’ look. It was recently reformulated, fragrance removed from the product, for which I’m glad.
The downside is, the amount of product is halved, from .6 to .3. I ordered a backup of the old formulation.

That foundation definitely has a learning curve. After reading up on it, I realized many bloggers were using foundation brushes to apply.
It’s a wax-based product, what worked for me was to apply my SPF, then mix an additional amount of SPF with a tiny dot of the foundation in the palm of my hand. The warmth of my hands melts the foundation and allows it to mix with the SPF, and voila, my skin but better foundation. Worked like a charm.

Wearing Chloe Vanilla Planifolia. This is a lovely vanilla (at least in my not-very-extensive vanilla scent experience). There are some spices that give it dimension, like a lightly spiced galette dough. What really impresses me is that it is such a delicate vanilla – not sugary or syrupy, or cloying, and also not sharp like vanilla extract. If vanilla flowers had a scent, I could see them smelling like this (which I guess is what Chloe was going for?). Reminds me of Duelle, but where I didn’t like the type and strength of the of spice note in Duelle, I Iike the gentle dusting of it here.

Started the day with Earl Gray for an early work call, and moved onto Clipper Ship vanilla bourbon black tea to compliment the Vanilla Planifolia.

Had a rough morning :( trying to remember to be kind to myself and others in these stressful times.

Wearing L’Interdit Rouge…spicy citrus in the opening w/ tuberose in the middle and patchouli and sandalwood in the base.

There are mixed reviews for this one on Fragrantica…? Flankers really have a hard life. Too far from the original? People get mad. Too close to the original? People get mad. I quite like it. It’s arguably not as original/interesting as the Intense version w/ sesame but has merits in its own right w/ amped patchouli and wood in the drydown.

Bought a FB when Nordstrom was price matching Macy’s but the sprayer seems to squirt rather than spray. I shall probably go to the store and try to swap it out and beg/borrow/steal any other samples they may have. Explain to me again why when I go to a department store they tell me they have no manufacturer samples yet I can go to Ebay and can buy them there… ;)

At the Nordstrom I used to frequent, they had buckets of empty atomizers all over the place. So not only no arguments with CS,but I could make a dozen samples without any interactions at all with sales reps. ?

Sephora seems to have stopped making samples, with the SA telling me that if I don’t like a frag I can just return it. Seems like they would end up with more opened, returned bottles than if they just made the samples, but ehh, what do I know?

…but they’ve always allowed returns of open bottles!

And to answer your Q, I have no idea. I haven’t been to a Nordstrom store for a few years.

Vee, I no longer see the bucketloads of empty atomizers but I haven’t been refused a sample or two or three, especially if I ask my La Mer SA for them ?

My Nordstrom no longer does this. But you can now ask for samples again. At one point they wouldn’t even make them for you.

    Ok, it happened.

I bought my first vintage ever.

Yesterday I passed my last exam at Southern Illinois University program to become a pet nutritionist and today I am celebrating with a 15 ml bottle on Vol de Nut perfume from 1983. It’s older than me!

I hope it is not a scam and I bought a real thing. It smells amazing and very close to what I know it should be.

I’ve read like a million reviews of people crying over vintage Vol de Nuit and saying that today it’s “just a shadow of it’s former self” and I always felt heartbroken. But now I know that for me it is not true: my modern version is just as good – the prettiest “shadow” I am not going to stop loving =)

    1) I am in the Baccarat 540 dupe Ambery Saffron- which I weirdly like better than Baccarat 540 itself. I showered with the bee sandalwood soap, which really amps up Ambery Saffron.

Eau de Merveilles because it was mentioned, and I hadn’t sprayed anything on yet.

Just got internet back after a bit over 24 hours. Someone plowed into the power pole on the main road in front of our house (there is a duplex between us and the road.) He was okay, but took out power for us and our neighbors for the afternoon. I walked up to the library and spent some time charging phones and reading there. Turned out the power company pulled out Spectrum’s lines, so I called them. First appt was Friday afternoon. But…my neighbor had the cell phone for their local tech. So she contacted him directly, and he got them out this morning. I come from the big city, so I go through channels. She is small town, so she goes direct to her relationships. It’s a lovely thing to watch and learn from.

My H and I were recently discussing under vs above-ground utilities. I don’t recall ever seeing anything above-ground where we live now. It’s all very location-dependent.

Cool weather here after the storm passed. Cool enough that I put a sweatshirt and shoes that cover my feet on before I came outside to sit for a while. Turns out it’s 80F, so chalk it up to acclimation I guess ? It’s also overcast, so no direct sun.

We are going to Baltimore next weekend, and temps are predicted to be high 60s/low 70s overnight. Until today it had been so long since we’ve had weather that cool that I wasn’t sure how to dress or what kind of jacket I’d need.

Speaking of which, any Baltimoreans or peeps familiar with the city? We’ll be there for a few days and would love to gorge ourselves on seafood and see cool historical stuff and/or architecture. I’d love recommendations!

Wearing Caleche extrait, which I got from an overly generous NSTer who is reportedly on a break these days. It’s a stunner.

I’m not sure which area of Baltimore you will be in, but I would recommend steamed crabs at Bill’s Terrace Inn or any decent crab house in Dundalk or Essex. There is also a good seafood restaurant in Fells Point, which is a historical area, and there are also a lot of dive bars with live music. The restaurant is on Thames Street and is called “The Thames Street Oyster House”. Expensive but great food. However, you will need to make a reservation. Another historical site is Fort McHenry which is in South Baltimore. Enjoy your stay “Hon”!

Lol! Is it a Hon place? I kind of love that ?

We’ll have a car, so can get to wherever the good food is. I’ll admit to being intimidated by eating crab in public. Any tips? We’re from the west coast, where crab is Dungeness (and which I only eat in the confines of my own home. ) We are staying near Fells Point, as it happens.

        Off to google Ft McHenry!

If you’re new to eating blue crab, which is what Baltimore is renowned for, stick with crab cakes. Picking crab can be tediously slow for newbies, and leave you very hangry! (Speaking from experience!)

If you are near the Inner Harbor, the USS Constellation is moored there. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Constellation_(1854) A Hard Rock café is also nearby, if I recall correctly. I’d also recommend a trip to the Baltimore Aquarium.

    TDC Rose Poivree today.

Crazy day that has finally settled out. Had to lead a big virtual meeting at work today, so stressed about that all night in my dreams even though I KNEW I was prepared. Hate that. (I’m with you, springpansy.)

In the middle of the meeting, the electricians wanted to see me (they actually came today to repair what they’d messed up and do more damage) and then the smoke detector testing guy showed up, completely unannounced by the strata…all at the same time. Thank heavens this was a meeting where I was giving people time to whiteboard, and I could slip away. But honestly!

The kid got her braces today, too, which took longer than expected so then I had to pack her an emergency lunch to eat in the car on the way to her afternoon camp. It has been quite a morning / early afternoon. I’m having a well deserved lunch break. :-) And I’m hoping this is the last I’ll see of the electricians.

Still safe and dry after last night’s terrible weather. As of now, there are 6 confirmed tornadoes in my area, and one of them was only 7 miles away. Cutting it close for sure.

Feeling better today, but still not 100%. It feels like something is going on with my inner ear(s). Seriously annoying.

SOTD = Atelier Cologne Encens Jinahe, from the sample stash. I was brave and tried on a quiet, comforting perfume today. It’s working well for me.

SOTD = Solstice Scents Estate Vetiver

The name should be changed to Estate Patchouli! Love it! I may or may not post a picture later.

So some entitled person whose level I will look up tomorrow whose email started with “Please don’t take this wrong” and I just went Oh boy, it will be bad. In a very sneering tone – “no one will care about a 5% discount for Starbucks”. Granted, he has a point, but if you are asking for help DO NOT BITE THE HAND THAT FEEDS YOU; how about the other resources listed? Anything wrong with those? I tell you, disasters bring out the best AND the worst in people!

“Please don’t take this wrong” is a big honking red flag in any conversation, be it face to face or via email.

Not biting the hand that feeds you has become a lost art.

Posting unrelated to perfume, but tangential to a specific NSTer:

    I immediately thought of Nancyleandros.
