Wednesday scent of the day 7/7

Posted by Robin on 7 July 2021 175 Comments

It's Hump Day and World Chocolate Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am copying pyramus on Monday, with Guerlain Anisia Bella for Tiger Tail ice cream, an orange and licorice combo that I'd never heard of, and which apparently is a love-it-or-hate-it flavor (and rather hard to find outside of Canada, although I see that it does pop up in the US here and there). I love licorice: I'm game.

Reminder: on 7/9 we're honoring Ice Cream month. Tell us your favorite flavor, share a recipe if you like, and wear any perfume that you think fits the project.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Tiger Tail ice cream is from Virtuous Pie Portland at Facebook.

Licorice ice cream week continues and I’m wearing SL Un Bois Vanille: the licorice is only a grace note but it’s there alongside coconut and bitter almond. The whole scent is a grown-up but comforting vanilla ice cream, the most accessible scent Lutens ever made, I think.

You smell wonderful – it used to be my signature scent when I had one.

I agree with you on the accessibility. I think it is the best of accessible SL scents, though – there have been quite a few ”easy” (bool-ring) ones which lack the intrigue factor UBV possesses.

Another Rivières de Cartier – Luxuriance today. It smelled lovely when first sprayed, nice for the first three hours and then just ok. Good for the hot humid weather, although it does not remind me of any ice cream :)

Parle Moi Milky Musk sample today. This is a soft sandalwood musk that has really grown on me and very attractive if you like under the radar fragrances.

Also PSA that Beautyhabit has 20% off most fragrances until midnight on Sunday, July 11 with code: FRAGRANCE20.

Wanted to share my ice cream recipes as I will not be able to post on Friday. I make these in an ice cream maker, but you could probably use a no churn technique as well.

Earl Grey Ice Cream (which I posted yesterday):
    https://www.gimmesomeoven.com/earl-grey-ice-cream/

    Brown Sugar Ice Cream:
    https://www.baking-sense.com/2018/07/09/brown-sugar-ice-cream/

And our latest favorite – a version of Stracciatella:
Use the above recipe and grate or finely chop a chunk of your favorite chocolate bar and stir in once the custard is chilled and before freezing. Awesome!

A lot of times we just have some type of homemade cookies around to eat with it (I, too, might have a bit of a connection with sugar–or at least with baking.) And we often sprinkle some berries on top. Brown sugar ice cream is my favorite with everything! But in our defense, we stretch it out and don’t eat a lot at once. :D

In Prada Infusion d’iris not to be confused with
Les Infusions Iris which is different I think. Though I have never smelled the ladder. Someone else can chime in if there is a difference.
In Prada today for the Italy Eurocup soccer win yesterday. I told the kids “if Italy wins I will make pasta for dinner” So it was a win win for everyone.

Yes, there are differences – I find Infusion d’Iris Eau de Parfum Absolue…more profound, if that makes sense. I had dismissed Prada Infusion d’Iris and wouldn’t have even sniffed the Absolue if a perfume pal hadn’t urged me to try. Am now on my second bottle, or possibly third.

Forgot-todays sipOTD is a lavender latte made at home. I cut some lavender from my “balcony garden” boiled it to a sugar syrup and added it to my latte. Cheaper than the one they make at Maman cafe here in the city ;)

I loathe licorice, so Tiger Tail ice cream does not appeal at all.

I’m in Philosykos today, and thinking fresh figs might make interesting ice cream. I dislike dried figs, but can eat fresh ones. Maybe in an ice cream sweetened with honey rather than sugar?

SOTM is SL L’orpheline because it smells cold on yet another hot humid day. To me it is like cold, wet incense, which seems like a contradiction, but it is like incense lingering in a large stone cathedral with water dripping down the walls. Not musty or mildewy, but wet-minerally. I’m sure it is the power of suggestion, but I do understanding the cold, empty feeling others say they get from it. I find it really intriguing and keep smelling my arm. The dry down is a strong musk and whatever fragrance molecule it is, it must be the same one they use in Mitchum’s Mens’ “Unscented” deodorant.

If I had unlimited access to a time machine, I would use it to go back to college and find those insufferable guys who claimed to be soooo into Nietzsche (but were definitely just trying to seem deep) and yell “You want nihilism? Here you go!” while spraying them with a cloud of L’orpheline.

(I *may* have dated one of those guys in college….)

Have you tried Messe d’Minuit? I get a bit of the incense plus cold stone vibe from that one. Never tried the L’orpheline. Serge Lutens went on a perfume release bender a few years back and I just couldn’t keep up.

SOTM is Lubin Grisette, thanks to an impromptu swap with a fellow NSTer. It’s quite lovely and true to the description on the LuckyScent website (where, SOMEhow, a bottle has been added to my shopping cart). Our swap was multi-tentacled, however, so I have a lot more to try before hauling the credit card out from under the mattress, where it’s cowering in fear.

Need to go back and catch up on past days’ comments.

We’ve gone from a hot and humid 4th weekend to rainy coolness here. And, yes, we have the fireplace going just to cozy the place up.

I’ve added Kiss Me Intense for added coziness. Considering a BUB of this during the Beautyhabit sale. On warmer days, I like to mix it with Elie Saab L’Eau Couture, which is a sweeter almond blossom scent (very sweet). The combo of sweet and bitter almond blends nicely.

Synchronicity happened this morning. Last night I thought ahead to wear a perfume with a banana note using Jeni’s Brandied Banana Brûlée ice cream as inspiration. I was thinking of Vanille Galante. Then in checking emails early this morning, I saw an eBay alert for a bottle of discontinued Penhaligon’s Amaranthine just listed for sale.
I’ve been waiting for this to pop up for a few years. There were actually 4 bottles, so I had some time to select this as my SOTD to ensure I really wanted to buy it, and I did. So it’ll soon be on its way to me! There’s still one more bottle available if anyone else has been holding out hope for it.

And it does smell like green bananas from the ylang ylang and some green notes, so I still got my ice cream pairing. ?

Hi all, my SOTD (and another from the sample bin) is Coty’s Chypre. Stunning. Starts out with a blast of oakmoss and initially reminds me of Magie Noir with less galbanum. The dry down is sweet, powdery, and similar to Youth Dew Bath oil.

I’m on my second espresso and heading to the gym in a moment. :)

Having a Nicolai day. Tried to ummph up Angelys Pear with some Neroli Intense. I just feel like I smell like pretty shampoo.

My space heater is again puffing away at my feet this cold morning. It was so cold, that at about 6 AM our central heating kicked on. I shut that down–ridiculous in the middle of the summer. But I wish I understood how the Northwest could be suffering so badly from heatwaves, and yet the Bay Area remains so cool. Usually my uninsulated office is a furnace at this time of year.

My least favorite thing about living in SF was how it almost never got over 65 degrees. I don’t even begin to feel warm and alive until at least 75, so I was always miserable. (Except for February.) And I lived in the Mission, a relatively warm and sunny microclimate. Partner is back there this week visiting, and I’m embracing the 90-something degree weather in NY.

We always just called that ice cream tiger rather than tiger tail. It’s a favorite of mine, but you do have to like licorice to enjoy it. Today I’m wearing Vert Pivione, which isn’t very ice cream like, but I have plans for Friday.

What an odd flavor combo! Hmm.. not sure on that one.

I’ve been on a strawberry ice cream bender as of late. From mochi ice cream to classic Häagen-Dazs to some newer brands out there, oh! and Italian Ice too.

Trying Pacifica Dream Moon today which is considered a dupe of BR 540 by many and I would agree to a point…a bit lighter/more airy and floral.

My sister had her 2nd round of chemo yesterday…was worried it might be worse than first but seems on par w/ side effects so far. She also gained a few pounds in the last couple weeks which is good news. :)

I should publish my little matrix although you do need to be considering several jobs and you can of course use this prior to an interview to even decide to go on one.

Create a spreadsheet with your list of priorities (e.g. Pay, Commute Time, Benefits (you can list days off separately), stepping stone, etc.). Across the top, list the different jobs. For each row, allocate x number of points (out of 100 or another number of your choice) in accordance with how you would weigh the priorities, then split the number of points for each row by job to total up to the number of points you allocated to it. Add the points for each job and voila. If you find yourself allocating the same number to the priority for each job, you can exclude that priority in your assessment or view it as Must Have but don’t bother with allocating points to that priority.

I have never had the privilege of multiple job offers at the same time. I have always had to decide on one option before I knew what my other choices might be. I think, in that situation, many of us feel we do not have the leeway to wait out a better option when a pretty good one comes our way. And of course, how tight our expenses are, and other personal factors, play a huge role in what level of risk we are able to take.

I spent the day in Chant d’Arômes but it faded a few hours ago, so now I’m in Rochas Absolu from last quarter purchases, so I am still getting to know it. I discovered that it has a bright citrus opening so maybe it will join my other summer ambre LM Lumière d’Ambre. Absolu is by Jacques Cavallier, now of Louis Vuitton, so out of my price range, wearing this is a way to still enjoy his work.

SotD started out with Aromatics Black Cherry. I am trying to think of an ice cream scent, and I like black cherry ice cream, but ABC goes in a non-gourmand direction. Just before heading out to my hot and humid yard for a morning of this and that, I topped it off with Fendi L’Acquarossa Elixir. Some on Fragrantica have voted as “reminds me of” ABC. IDK. (But I really like both scents.) The search for an ice cream scent in my collections continues.

Showing up late to say I’m wearing Gris Clair today. Not interested in lavender ice cream. I’m wearing Mure et Musc today because someone mentioned it yesterday (thank you) and it can count for a black or dark berry flavored ice cream. I thought of another kind of ice cream I love, mango (ice cream, sorbet, or gelato). Not sure if there are mango scents? Probably.
Today is one of those bad days… air conditioning woes. I had a repairman yesterday for one of the units in my house, but the problem isn’t fixed so they’re sending him back (as they should) today. Meanwhile when I got out to go somewhere this morning I discovered that the a/c in my car has stopped working. What all this spells out is, I’m afraid, $$$ going out the window. Meanwhile I have another cat with a problem (ear infection) but her vet trip will have to wait until I get my car fixed.
PSO: The new/final season (Season 7) of Bosch was pretty good overall. I have some complaints, but won’t mention them to avoid spoilers. I’ve read all the Bosch books and the characters in the show are really great realizations of the ones from the books, especially the lead (the handsome Titus Welliver) playing Bosch.

I spent most of my day in Law Galion’s Åme perdue, which would sort of translate to peach or plum ice cream. Never tasted either of those but I have very fond memories of some apricot ice cream I once had in Siena Italy. Even more hot and humid here than yesterday was. The air temperature has made it up to at least 95F, which is 35C for those of you on the metric system.

Last night’s weather got “energetic”, with a bit of a brownout, the cable TV getting knocked off the air, and my cell phone conversation with my brother getting dumped. Some truly epic thunder and lightning there. ⚡☔?

More of the same might be in store for tonight.

SOTD = back in 8 Billion Astronauts today. I think part of what I smelled yesterday was the far drydown of something else, since I am not getting any floral notes at all. Today, 8 Billion Astronauts is a woody amber with hints of incense. No bubblegum notes either.

No Heat Wave here, since the temps were in the 90’s for “only” two days. It’s supposed to be a little less hot tomorrow.

Sigh. My Mom was admitted to hospital over the holiday weekend. She was not doing well at all. She did have a fever when she was admitted, and hadn’t eaten in 3 or 4 days. In fact, “hospice” was mentioned to my brother. Lots of tests run again. Her BP wasn’t being managed very well, it seems. As of this afternoon, she is in a different PT/OT/rehab facility than the one she had been in this past spring.

I didn’t say anything over the weekend because a) lack of information, and b) didn’t want to bum anyone out.
