Wednesday scent of the day 6/2

Posted by Robin on 2 June 2021 193 Comments

It's Hump Day, the 2nd day of LGBTQ Pride Month, and National Rocky Road Day. (If you missed it when I posted it last year, here is a recipe for no churn Rocky Road.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm commando for a mammogram later today, but after that, the plan is Cartier Baiser Volé, which a kind reader swapped me for the bottle of Cartier La Panthère that I had bought unsniffed and did not love.

Reminder: on 6/4 we're doing With A Little Help from My Friends...wear a perfume that you received from someone else, either here at Now Smell This or elsewhere, or that you never would have tried if someone else hadn't recommended it, or worn it, or reviewed it. Adapted from a suggestion by Jalapeno.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown is the "sculptural Ballon Bleu de Cartier watch", prices vary but the model shown is probably between $6000-$11,000.

Hope all goes well at your appointment Robin.

I’m also commando at the moment as I am finally getting my first shot this afternoon (yay for aging in and doses finally being available). Not sure what I’ll wear after, guess it’ll depend on how I react to the vaccine.

Thanks all. It went well. Got Moderna as it was the only one offered where I went. Seem to be fine other than the normal soreness where they jabbed.

Going with Poivre Samarcande now that I can spritz myself.

Good luck with the mammo Robin. Pretty sure I am overdue.?
I’m in Shalimar Philtre from the splitmeet again, this is good stuff! Maybe I am not a real perfumista because I prefer the flankers to the original. I do get a gasoline note from the original and that just does not work for me. This one has all the good notes from the original minus the gasoline. I like.
Another gorgeous day here!? The weatherman says we will hit 90 this weekend. Summer has arrived! Time for a much needed pedicure.

Funny — I *love* a hint of gasoline in a scent. Old Spice used to have it, and so did DK Fuel for Men (unsurprisingly). It’s always a pleasant surprise for me when it pops up (although I never did notice it in Shalimar, which I found too overwhelming, I guess).

This morning I dug out my Boucheron Pour Homme — the eau de parfum, which is fuller and richer than the edt, and *drenched* in thick, honeyed oakmoss. It’s a classic men’s cologne up top, and then it turns into a lush, expensive-smelling chypre. I really need to put this into my summer rotation: I’ve been ignoring it too long.

Vintage — I bought it right around the time it was launched. It’s still in perfect shape, because I keep it in the box, inside another box.

They haven’t made the EDP in quite a while, I think. If you could smell the two side by side you’d find that the EDT is brighter, fresher, more cologney, and the EDP is more complex, somewhat darker, and extremely seductive. They’re both great, though. I just had a mostly scent-averse co-worker tell me how good I smelled.

SOTM is Paris-Deauville from the splitmeet. Fantastic burst of fresh citrus in the opening and fresh green & floral notes about 90 minutes in. The white florals in this are staying much more light & green than heady & indolic on me, which I like because it keeps the whole progression lively and fresh.

Drinking a mug of Cloud & Mist from Clipper Ship Tea and doing my best to appreciate green tea.

It’s nice you have a foster dog to help fill the gap. I’m a cat person as you may know, but I do truly believe dogs occupy a larger space in our emotional psyches, because they are a lot more interactive. So I’m sure it’s very hard to lose your friend.

Today’s scent, in honor of our new kitten: Katy Perry Purr. I never would have bought it for the scent alone, which is nice but nothing special, but the bottle always makes me smile!

I have so many of those little travel sprays of Happy that I want to finish as well. Rodin Bis today from a lovely new perfume friend. We are having gorgeous summer weather, but it’s a little warm at night with no A/C. However! I must not complain given how much I longed for the sun over the winter.

Hi all! I’m in a sample of Divine l’Inspiratrice, which I got from an NSTer a few years ago I think! I don’t see cedar or woods in the list of notes, but I’m getting a strong wood closet smell from this (which I like).

I should be using my day off this week to get stuff done, but so far I’m still lounging. Maybe I should add a nap to my list of things to do.

Peace and quiet has been restored to the homestead, the house painters finished mid-day yesterday. The cat and I celebrated with an afternoon nap. We live large around here :)

Ran errands early this morning… all the Chanel splits and the freebies have been mailed. And yesterday, I found *another* stash of perfume samples (WHAT?!!!) so expect another freebie announcement soon.

No scent yet, will be sampling later…

My current lemming is for Diptyque Eau Moheli. Any got opinions on this one?

More than likely I will find more samples on my at-home work desk this week. I’m cleaning and tidying up. I finish teaching for this school year on Friday. Hope next year will be different in good ways for everyone, especially the little learners among us.

Huh. Guess I’ve been going to the wrong place for colonoscopies. No Cheez-Its, and you only get a warm blankie at the beginning. I find mammos much easier (yes, they hurt, but I get through it okay; I know that for some patients, they are excruciating).

Their travel sprays are reasonably priced, and look really cute & fun. Also eyeing Juliette Has a Gun Sunny Side up or Moscow Mule
Possibly a travel spray too but large bottles can be found for around $70 at discounters so well, I am in a thinking mode right now.

I’m wearing SL Fils de Joie from the split meet and loving it–woo hoo, is it intense! Skanky honey musk jasmine ylang ylang, oooh! It’s a very seductive fragrance, which makes you feel fully how a happy bee must feel when it gets itself all completely covered with yellow pollen from a luscious blossom! I think it would be too over the top for many people. And it’s got a nice red juice! Not something to wear in a perfume-free environment, for certain.

    Humpday!

    1) That watch costs more than all of my house projects. Combined.

    2) SOTD: Bagatelle de Gabriel EDT, perfect for the scorching heat wave we have here in Portland. My poor roses have been burned, and my green veggies are bolting!

    3) Kitchen chaos continues: The Wrath of Con

So Richard, who I hired to finish the assembly and installation of the kitchen…promptly flaked! Flaked like a pastry! Took my deposit and F L A K E D.
Apparently, his broken dentures were not THAT important! :-(
    ANYWAYS.
I built out the base cabinets and hired a NEW person who built out the rest (including the island) and he will then install the panels and drawers while I work upstairs* . I. STILL. HAVE. NOT. PICKED. OUT. COUNTERTOPS.

    4) USAJOBS site is…ooof.

*All of a sudden, I have a F ton of coding and credentialing stuff to do- all trying t cram as much work as possible for us before our dismissal letter!

No, unfortunately- I will stack it to ‘lesson learned’. It’s too bad, because I have worked with him before, most recently in replacing the downed fencing in my backyard earlier this year. But nope- he flaked after a day of half a**** work and leaving the worksite in a mess! No answers to phone calls or messages!
Oh well- I am 2/3rds of the way through- it’s chaos, but controlled chaos. Next up are the island cabinets, leveling, and then attaching the panels. This new worker I have is super focused and working with him yesterday was a genuine pleasure!

Perfume as a priority in this crazy, cruel world is a GOOD one, in my very humble opinion!

The cost effectiveness of all this is all down to a combo of luck and patience, honestly!

It really does take patience plus a lot of energy. I think it would theoretically be possible for me to do the tile myself, but that I would likely soon get tired and then end up showering for years with plastic duct-taped to the walls. ?

    SOTD = 4160Tuesdays Clouds Parfum

I’m with the CP. Cazaubon whispered in my ear that one can get a better version of the EDP by asking directly (and nicely) and w00t, I got it in my hot little hands in no time. This stuff is made of the best smelling ??!

    In other news:

    1. I was pleasantly surprised to get a check back from … the IRS. Not only did I not have to pay, I also got more money back. I am scratching my head as to where I may have completed the forms incorrectly although doing so is not on top of my list of things to do; however, knowing me, I probably will take a look and see ??‍♀️.

    2. You would think that the tax authorities would cash a check ASAP. I had a rather large tax bill for NJ and, allowing for a week for the envelope to be processed, it has been 1.5 weeks and the balance is still sitting in my checking account. On the flip side, I have not received my NY refund either.

    3. I went back to Macy’s a 2nd time to see if the item I wanted was back on display and voila! I used lillyjo’s technique of asking for $s off instead of % off, but the cashier stood firm with the 10% discount. I got it anyway because it was just so whimsical!

Had a beautiful long weekend in NM! I wore Paris-Riviera and 10CC the whole time (took my decants). The past two days I’ve been in Diptyque Essences Insensees 2019 (the tiare one). It’s so freaking pretty but I am a sucker for tiare.

Back to this past weekend, I got to see family I hadn’t seen (mom, sis, nephew) since September and also attend my best friend’s wedding! It turned out soooo beautiful and perfect. I am amazed at what she was able to pull off in 3 weeks. It was bittersweet though in a way because even though it was a perfect wedding and so “them”, her mom was soooo weak and frail. The cancer is hitting so fast. But we had a rule that no one brought it up to her or got emotional seeing her so she could just focus on enjoying the day. She hung in there until well into the reception and I know it meant so much to everyone that she was able to attend. Life sure is funny sometimes….how things work out…

SotD 4160 Tuesdays Says Alice. Happiness of the day is visit from plumbers who fixed leaky shower, installed new kitchen faucet and garbage disposal and started to fix leaky outside faucets. I agree they needed to come back on Friday for the outside work: it was pouring rain and they did not have the parts which (our faucets are original and 50+years old) turned out to be more than just the spigots. Sigh. Of. Relief. for household maintenance! Off to read comments but am sure you all smell wonderful.

It must look better in person, but the Ballon Bleu is one of the few Cartiers I don’t crave.

I have my eye on these new Cartier Must Solar Beat tanks:

    https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/solarbeat-tank-must-the-first-ever-solar-powered-cartier-watch-introducing

(Although budget priorities will probably reassert themselves before the watch comes out in September.)

The iPhone generates Memory videos which sometimes take a strange turn. Today’s had a twinkly background music for photos I took during an evening walk last year: a rising moon, twilight trees and sky — and a sign posted by the county near some relatively lower rent garden apartments: “Tiene preguntas sobre el COVID-19? Necesita alimentos, vivienda, o asistencia financiera? Llame [county phone number]”

Just spritzed on the appropriately named DSH Heirloom Elixir Floating Amongst the Stars (only available through July 3, 2021). Lovely start — we’ll see how it wears.

The watch looks interesting — 16 years without service? Very cool.

        Those battery changes add up!

I’m fascinated by the fact that the light enters through the numerals, which look lacquered but are translucent.

I seriously dislike the Ballon Bleu watches (campaign image chosen solely for the color!) and the ones you posted are much nicer but luckily I am pretty happy with my $100 fitbit! If I want to get fancy I put on the leather band.

The overall image is beautiful! A fitbit on a leather band sounds cool as well as healthy.

Robin, I hope the mammo was speedy and uneventful!

No CP points for me today; I am wearing Un Jardin sur le Toit. We observed what appears to be the last nice day before a week of storms and blistering heat by taking our kayaks out for the first time since 2019. We only paddled for 90 minutes but it was great to be on the water again. We were on the Erie Canal, so not much wildlife, but we did have four long, loud freight trains go by.

Speedy, uneventful, and already have my results — normal.

      Nothing beats kayaking!!

Fantastic that you got your results the same day! That always used to be the longest week or even two of the year.

I haven’t tried this one yet — love DSH but her prolific creativity gives me serious FOMO, lol.
