Monday scent of the day 4/12

Posted by Robin on 12 April 2021 207 Comments

Monday, perhaps a bit too soon? It's also Licorice Day, and we have a few birthdays: Herbie Hancock, David Letterman, David Cassidy. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: celebrating Licorice Day in Guerlain Anisia Bella.

Reminder: 4/16 will be Spring clean! Wear the perfect fragrance for doing household chores. Suggested by LisaD.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Oh, I am going to celebrate Licorice Day! I am wearing the fantastic Demeter Licorice, which I just now put on and which smells so convincingly like licorice cigars, and then later on I am going to have some delicious licorice allsorts and I think I have some Goodies (the Canadian version of Good & Plenty) in the pantry too….

No, I’m not going to eat candy all day — I mean, I *am* an adult — but I am going to eat candy.

I love Licorice and have enjoyed a few pieces of salted black licorice with my morning coffee.

Do you have any salted black licorice brand that you like? I have been checking for some, but not sure which one is good?

I love Gustafs Premium Dutch Licorice. I tell my husband to hide the bag so I don’t over consume…
Trader Joes used to make great black licorice scotty dogs but they are long discontinued.

I now yearn for licorice Scottie dogs, and I don’t even like licorice all that much.

Thank you! I just placed an order. The idea of my morning coffee with few pieces of salted black licorice sounds delish. I will report back! ?

Wearing Rochas Alchimie because I haven’t cleaned it out and packed it yet. This theory will apply to all perfumes I wear this week. I am trying to narrow down hundreds of cookbooks to 3 boxes because my husband is hoping to save some money on the move. This is hard! At least I don’t have to eliminate perfumes…

Lend all the cookbooks you can live without to friends. Have them come by and pick up a box or two. Then they can return them to you after you’ve moved, and if you never get them back, well, you could have lived without them anyway.

Wow, that’s a lot of cook books! Are there some that you only use a recipe or two from? You could take a picture of the recipe and store it on your phone for future reference, then you wouldn’t need the whole book.

I lost pretty much the whole weekend to post-vaccination side effects, and my son is currently on the couch after his J&J vaccine yesterday. So I am quite behind on other things (mainly: taxes! must finish taxes!) and may or may not be back here today. Hopefully I will catch up by tomorrow!

Oh, I hope you feel better soon! We’re getting the AstraZeneca on Friday night and have basically scheduled the entire weekend for side effects, just in case.

Also, Anisia Bella — such a good choice for Licorice Day! I bought it blind years ago from an online discounter and it might be my favourite Aqua Allegoria.

Thank you for all the well wishes! Just to be clear, I was 80% better on Sunday, just a bit tired and could not get motivated to do taxes. I am 100% today. My son is sicker than I was — same 101 fever, but with the unhappy addition of severe nausea.

We will both survive! But I am determined to get the taxes done today, so am going to stop even checking here until they’re done. They were mostly done anyway, it is just SO hard to make myself finish. Ha! I predict much chocolate will be eaten today.

Glad you are better and hope your son recovers soon. I find lying on my left side eases nausea, as does sniffing a cotton pad soaked in 70% alcohol – 30 seconds of sniffs, then a few minutes’ rest, then 30 seconds of sniffs. For some reason it helps.

And the tax fairies allow as much chocolate as you need. It’s their only concession.

I got them done last weekend and was so glad to be done! That was my second set…Canadian taxes have been in for a while but the U.S. taxes are always an unpleasant afterthought since it’s more complex but I never owe anything, it’s just useless paperwork. I hope you get yours out of the way!

They are done and dusted, and did some other annoying paperwork chores to boot.

My taxes are not even that bad and we even have an accountant now, but for reasons I don’t understand that turns out to save me zero time and effort — it is exactly the same amount of prep as using turbotax.

I just find it one of the hardest things on earth to make myself do. I don’t know why.

Happened to me to, but the good news is that once the side effects are over, they are over.

I got a 2nd Shingles shot last Thursday afternoon. Woke up Friday sore all over. I assumed it was because of move activity and being on my feet, etc. Finally dawned on me that it was vaccine. Got to our hotel at 3, and I basically stayed in bed till 7 am next morning. I was fine in am. I really don’t want any more vaccines for awhile though.

I’m giving Le Lion another try. I think it is just not for me. One of those perfumes that I would love to smell on somebody else but on myself it is just too much.
Yesterday was so dreary I ended up taking a nap. I can’t remember the last time I took a nap. It felt soooo good! I was worried it would mess up my nighttime sleep but nope, slept for 10 hours! Guess I needed it.
I’m off to the PO to mail some thin mints to my son. I’m sure they have Girl Scout cookies in Utah too, but they’ll taste better if they come from mom.?☺️

    Ciao a tutti!
I was MIA last week, we visited Mohonk Mt house upstate NY for spring break. I got a massage, did lots of hiking with the kiddos, Qigong, and some archery. Old school spring break, and didn’t leave the state of NY.

SOTD is Alahiiiiine both solid and liquid

Thrift store OOTD :Etro pants, YSL scarf and a t-shirt. I have some sad news to report about clothing, my favorite thrift store, where I buy the majority of my clothes is closing its doors in May. The store benefits financial, counseling and support groups for cancer patients. So sad!

I was thinking I’d wear Cristalle edt, but it’s kinda chilly out so I’ll attempt to sample the last of the Francesca Bianchis I haven’t gotten around to yet. I think they’re more suited for cooler weather, so I’ll take advantage of the opportunity.

PSA: Cristalle edp is available online at Saks Fifth Avenue. It’s really hard to find, so it you’re interested in getting it, I’d suggest you seize this opportunity!

Hope everyone has a peaceful Monday!

Hi everyone, my SOTD is vintage Aliage by Estee Lauder, moss, cypress, citrus, and greens for today’s warm weather. I think of aviator glasses, wedge platforms, and maxi dresses when I wear this scent. My Nana wore this in summer, so I associate this with being at the club pool-side, with the scent of cigarettes, chlorine, gin & tonic, warm skin, and Bain De Soleil Classic Formula Sunscreen in Orange Gelee in the background. Sadly, Bayer discontinued the product in 2019.

As a tween, I had a huge crush on David Cassidy – who didn’t? Teen Beat had him in high rotation!

Oh wow, that must have been scary! At the time of his execution at Stark prison in FL, I was living in Tallahassee FL and remember reading The Killer Next Door, about Ted Bundy’s murders. It was quite sobering to walk by various locations in Tallahassee mentioned in the book.

I added The Serpent to my ‘must read’ list!

Woke up late and am sitting with a latte and trying to get the brain to engage. Wore Dryad yesterday for lots of laundry-doing and gardening (read “weeding”), and have just ordered a few bare-root hostas to put in the freshly weeded beds. Am assembling a list of other shade lovers for the beds – they used to get sun, but the surrounding trees are now so tall that my raised beds have become a shade garden. I’m thinking some astilbes, some ferns, the hostas, and maybe impatiens or coleuses (coleii?). Any other suggestions?

Bleeding heart usually does quite well in shade, and looks nice mixed with ferns (although many ferns spread much faster and will take over if you don’t prevent it).

I’m testing CBIHP Black March. Appropriate on this gray and drizzly spring morning. I get wet dirt, green plant shoots and leaves, that watery smell from when green stems snap and their sap drips out, and fresh&cool morning air that has some humidity from dew. Lots of plants, but no florals. It is the smell of tending to a garden on a early spring morning, before the plants have started to bloom.

I like the wet dirt note. I know Demeter has a few scents that focus on wet dirt and I can see the appeal of layering that on top of a whole-plant floral scent to try to mimic a whole-garden effect.

Oh, grandpas and tomato plants! Mine would spread used Maxwell House grounds around his plants as compost/mulch. I was allowed to “help” by holding the bowl of grounds and watching him distribute it – no way would he let me near his babies. :) So my scent memory of that is definitely more coffee grounds than actual plants. I am an avid composter and tomato grower now, so I guess I did learn some gardening lessons even if I had to stand three steps back.

Woke up in Happy this morning and was tempted to continue with Happy. But my eyes landed on Tocca Giulietta which is very undemanding. I hope that my tax refund comes tomorrow so I can pay my cellphone bill early and then get my dog’s medication. I am pleased with myself though. Bath and Body Works had a candle sale and didn’t bite. With a large collection of candles already, I don’t need more, especially since I will be making a Sephora order on Thursday.

I agree is very watery and also fleeting. I don’t get any carrots vibe from it. I wish! But it is a very nice, clean and easy to wear floral scent. No full bottle worthy for me imho, well, unless a bottle falls in my lap!

The differences (comparing EdT formulations) are vintage No. 22 is powdery, white florals over an incense base. Gaia The Non Blonde’s review captures it perfectly.

The newer formulation of EdT is fizzy, joyful, lyrical, and exuberant. It’s a beautifully balanced bouquet of flowers, and truly gorgeous. Bois de Jasmine has a great review.
Both are lovely, but my vote is for the vintage.

It opens quite fizzy and then goes very close to the skin quite soon. The base seems somewhat creamy flowers. In comparison to Chanel 5 I would say overall much softer. Unfortunately I can’t compare to the edt and extrait versions.

Laughing at a colleague this AM who is following me down the rabbit hole just a bit these days. I just introduced her to Serge Lutens ad copy and his ad videos. Her reaction is priceless. I’m in Daim Blond from a generous NSTer, hence the inspiration. This is actually a beautiful perfume. Amouage Gold for me today, for no reason other than that it seemed to be calling from the back of the perfume drawer. I’m enjoying a relatively quiet day at work and the unusual sunshine we’re supposed to have for a week. It’s even supposed to be up to 18 degrees or so by the end of the week. New home, so “new” scent. Chanel No. 19 EdP, which I made sure to buy before leaving NYC. Wore this years ago, and it’s still my favorite Chanel.

Had to call one of my credit card company’s online support. Website kept telling me my physical address was not valid. Which was amusing, since I’m sitting in its kitchen…. (Google maps doesn’t know it either. If you enter in my address and zip, you end up in a field about 90 miles away…)

Hope your shipments/mailings don’t go astray. My default now when calling any entity’s 800 number is to start screaming “representative” instead of listening to endless prompts…works about 3/4 of the time!

Have a vintage splash bottle of No 19. While still great, its top notes are now muted. Need to compare to the current formulas.

OMG – I do the same thing and somehow, I always think I have to shout it so the machine can hear. And if I say no to one of the prompts even though I’ve already asked for representative, I get a lecture about how doing what they suggest could really help me. NO! Just get me to a live person!

SOTD = Valentino Valentino Uomo Intense EDP

I must have had the travel spray for at least a year. It was one of the travel sprays from Fragrancenet which I got to get me to a minimum for free shipping. It’s a great vanilla, iris, earthy and leather. ?. I heard it’s been reformulated and now a shadow of its former self. I don’t know if mine is the older version or the reformulated one but whatever, it smells good to me.

    Let’s talk Zoom! (random topics)

    1. Some people have been asking for jewelry that would look good in Zoom meetings. I would be curious to see the recommendations even though I am unlikely to follow suit.

    2. On a Zoom call today, a guy must have his camera on the bottom because half his screen was just showing his hands / fingers in supersized mode! I try to be conscious with what shows on the screen — not sure why he didn’t notice!

I have a colleague who positions his camera (I don’t know if this is a conscious choice or not) so that only his forehead shows on screen. I find it both amusing and very disconcerting.

Can one even see jewelry that well in a Zoom meeting?

        Oy with the forehead!

As to jewelry, I think if you draw attention to it, maybe:
        – twirl hair to make large earrings more fluid and visible
        – keep fiddling with the area around one’s neck while wearing a huge “jewel” encrusted choker (yes, although not on Zoom but in person, my cousin’s on-again wife kept flashing large rings while her fingers were fiddling with her neck; she was waiting for me to fawn over her but I did not give her the satisfaction — under normal circumstances this is crude but at a repast for an uncle? Beyond ridiculous!)

? I too found it annoying with masks. I stopped wearing earrings for a while last year and regretted it. I had to retrain my piercings for about 6 weeks and it was quite painful. I now don’t go more than 24 hours without wearing a pair, even if it’s for a few hours.

I wear small but sparkly hoops on Zoom under the theory that they distract from the fact that I have worn my hair in a bun every single day since last March bc I can’t be bothered to do anything else with it.

I saw a presenter recently in an emerald green silk top and a gold necklace that both looked great on zoom and decided I could stand to up my zoom outfit game.

I’m wearing 4160 Tuesdays Red Queen to cheer me up. Yesterday was Waft from the Loft parfum.

At least we have access to a backyard and sunshine – the quarantine last year was worse, stuck in a second floor apartment in the snow.

You poor thing! Wouldn’t you think that there would be an easier testing method by now? I hope your quarantine days go quickly.

Canada has a very inefficient system of processing the required Covid tests, I’ll spare you the details, but it was extremely aggravating. Even my husband who is fully vaccinated has to submit to the same rules.

It’s difficult to be in a new place we need to explore, need to find an apartment, yet can’t move for 14 days. I called our real estate agent to see if she can help.

The Black March faded early, so I switched to Paris EDP. It has been on my list to try for a while bc I am a rose lover. I scored a 3.4 oz bottle for $46 last week, but wanted to test it before breaking the seal on a bottle that big, so I ordered a sample.

Wow is it a powder bomb! I was expecting violet and powder with the rose, but this is bigger than I expected. I think I may need to send back the EDP and try again with the EDT. Although, I’m seeing comments on Fragrantica that the EDT is even more powdery than the EDP? Maybe Paris just isn’t for me. That makes me a bit sad tho, bc I think of it as a classic.

Are you spraying the Paris? I used to love it, and still do, but now I find that the several sprays I used to wear are just too much, and instead a couple judicious dabs are plenty.

If you like the idea but it’s still too much, there’s always Drole de Rose.

My tester is a dabber and I applied sparingly. The bottle I scored is an atomizer, though. I think I just need to accept that Paris isn’t for me, at least not the EDP. Which was, of course, the point in getting that tester before opening the bottle (blind buys terrify me). So my process worked, I just need to accept the results!

        Thanks for rec on DdR.

What a strange, strange day. I will not elaborate except to say that pretty much all my colleagues and students have had one very weird thing happen to them today — a different thing for each.

Anyway, in Shalimar today because it is rainy and chilly. I needed warmth and comfort. Am glad for the anise/licorice suggestions — it is a note I like but do not currently have.

We went to an in-person wedding this weekend! Safety protocols very well observed, small gathering, and still deeply strange. And exhausting — I’ve forgotten how to pack a suitcase and that dry hotel air will turn my eyes into deserts. But I wore Winter Palace, so I smelled great. :)

I’m trying a sample of Nuit de Bakélite, already having forgotten the description that prompted me to order it! So I’m challenging myself to NOT go and read anything before I’ve formed an impression. The first stage made me so cheery, for some reason–bright and plasticky but in a pleasant, nostalgic way. I smell galbanum and some other bitter herbs. Now it has changed to a more floral and slightly sweeter leather, but up close the plastic persists. I still like it, strangely! (Never have been at all attracted to vinyl or rubber notes…)

Happy Monday! I am super late today. It was cold and damp so I went with Felanilla.
Post shower, I am rounding out the day in Shalimar Philtre thanks to hajusuuri! Props to the original Shalimar which I sometimes find hard to wear on a day-to-day basis but Philtre is really good.

Hello everyone!! happy Monday evening!! My Ashoka shipped already:) I also ordered some colorful chulk and a blackboard for my 2 year old. The last purchase was mini bottles of M. micallef aoud rose. I am familiar with aoud, however I am a comple sucker for Lavender or Rose. I generally liked my rose to be like Jo Malone simply red roses or Shiseido Rosarium which smells like a bouquet of fresh roses. I also like the bath and body works ivy & rose water which I smelled on other people. Undeniably I love roses in perfume but we will see how my roses will do with the aoud!!

Got my second shot Saturday, and goodness, what a doozy! Woke up at 2:00 AM shivering and shaking with fever and the fever lasted ALL day yesterday…along with body aches, headache, and super sore arm. I woke up feeling much better, so I think the worst is over. I’m not complaining though, happy to have it done!

No scent Saturday or Sunday because of that but am in Dune today because it’s faaaabulous.

We had pretty much the same reaction! A day of fever + aches, then a day of tired, then fine on the third day.

Jour Ensolleille because it was such a day earlier, but it’s now overcast. I timed it…10 minute walk to the post office.

    Movers arrive tomorrow morning! Yay!

My husband asked me yesterday what I was wearing. He said it smelled “sophisticated.” I laughed. Chanel No. 19.
