Thursday scent of the day 2/11

Posted by Robin on 11 February 2021 204 Comments

It’s Almost-Friday and Inventors' Day aka Thomas Edison's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in vintage Diorissimo. Loyalty, honesty and hard work might be stretching it, but it's as dependable as they come. I am awarding myself a partial point.

Reminder: on 2/12, welcome the Year of the (Metal) Ox! Wear a fragrance that represents diligence, dependability, loyalty, honesty and hard work.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown is the B23 High-Top Sneaker ("It is distinguished by the layering of transparent cutouts and black and white Dior Oblique canvas, further embellished with a DIOR AND SHAWN signature and an embroidered ox head patch, the capsule’s emblem. The style adheres to the high-top sneaker’s timeless codes with its front laces and eyelets, its white rubber sole, its reinforced rounded toe and back tongue.") from the Shawn Stussy x Dior Chinese New Year capsule collection, $1,300.

The top notes are a wee bit synthetic, but the dry down is really really soft and cozy to my nose! I paid $19.99 and love it!

I’m in classic Old Spice today, since I’m in need of some comfort. Old Spice has become a major comfort scent since I bought a bottle last year.

I LOVE Old Spice. My grandpa wore it and I LOVED him! :)

I keep a bottle on my hubby’s side of the sink and sniff it (and him) often….and I wear it sometimes to bed!

Randomly grabbed a sample vial of Cara by Farmacia SS. Annunciata, and it is…. vanilla macarons soaked in more vanilla and buried in baby powder. It’s *really* powdery. And honestly very nice, but there’s just SO MUCH of it. I can’t quite imagine owning a whole bottle, because how would you ever get through it? Your great-grandchildren would still be wearing it, one tiny spritz at a time.

In Jo Malone Red Roses to continue with my rose week and to fight with its brightness another cold, grey and boring weather day.

Second cup of coffee, as usual as this time, with a challah roll and a thin slice of quesadilla cheese.
Last night, I made baked feta pasta from the recipe shared by Tulipani (thank you!) and it was really good! Leftovers for dinner tonight.

Now, back to my working desk.
    Happy Thursday!?

I like Red Rose a lot but in a side by side I found I preferred Paul Smith’s rose for it’s effervescence (probably given by the green tea). Perhaps my results were skewed as I tried it against Malone’s RR bath oil. In any case – I would be very glad if someone gave me a small bottle of RR – :D

        Ciao PL67,
Thank you so much for thinking of him. Next month is my birthday and it would be a year since we have seen each other. Mr L and I had planned a trip for my 40th and the day we were suppose to leave (and leave the kids with my in laws) the hotel called and said that they were closing down and not to come. I am so happy they did, we would of been stuck in Africa. Mr L jokes with me that I would of been stuck, since Canada fetched their citizens and he is still duel citizen. ha!
So we found my inlaws a airbnb and they stayed for the time we were suppose to be gone.
My father in law thinks his chai tea is the secret to his longevity and energy, along with eating turmeric daily. They think the spices help keep your inner digestive fire burning which is helpful in your overall health. He is a hoot!
A few days a week they have story time with my kids before bed and they sing gayatri (spelling ?) mantra. So far they are good spirits.
I spoke to my father in law once over Skype and told him how much I missed his tea and he got very emotional.

You are very fortunate to have such wonderful and loving father-in-law. Let’s hope for better times to arrive soon, so you can all share with him again. No doubts spices are great support of energy levels and health overall. I wish I could be more disciplined about that. He will live a very long life!. You were lucky to not be stuck in Africa, but at least there is always the excitement of that trip in the future!

In Zoologist Hyrax today, two tiiiiiiny sprays from my sample so as not to gas anyone. No link to Year of the Ox except that many people find this one smells like cow patties (not unfairly) so I try to be conservative in applying!

Today’s first coffee survived to be drunk, we’re off to a great start!

I should have new pillows in 6-8 weeks (I found my ideal ones but they were out-of-stock in store) and am starting to field tentative requests for availability for summer projects. I won’t say the light at the end of the tunnel is definitely there, but it’s nice to imagine it may be if all goes well these next 5-6 months.

these must be fancy pillows if they’re worth waiting that long for! Anytime I see the word pillow these days, I have to think of the SNL skis with the my pillow guy – they are pretty funny (but not per se about pillows).

Mostly it’s worth being able to go and pick them up in store!

The doorbell to my apartment is broken and the door a full floor below the apartment itself, so we almost never hear when deliveries are attempted.

But given that the pandemic has made knock-and-drop deliveries the norm, I get anxious when bigger or more expensive packages are delivered and then sit outside on our stoop for hours sometimes!

I watched a brief video on YouTube about an exhibit of Frida Kahlo’s personal items, and as the camera panned past one of the display cases, right there was an empty bottle of Shalimar! I love it when I see perfume bottles on film or in photographs. I do not wear Shalimar myself, but I absolutely adore the classic flacon, with it’s blue crystal topper.

Cire Trudon Salta and Papier d’Armenie (the Armenia year edition) are my favorites. Then I have a couple Otherland candles — they are good but not as good. Plus, have an Ormonde Jayne votive, so really have 4.5 candles.

Of all those, the only one I bought was the Papier d’Armenie, the others are all from Kevin!

In another tea scent today with Berdoues Assam of India. Counting it for CP because it’s loyal to the listed notes of tea, lemon, and sandalwood.

Also because I diligently drink at least two cups of tea a day (though that might be out of habit, and a love of tea).

SOTD is SL Cedre. I’ve certainly been playing with my scents a lot lately (sampling, and re-testing FBs that are in the purgatory box) but not properly “wearing” scents much.

I used to have a bottle of that, but I gave it away many moons ago. I remember thinking later that I should have kept it, because I suspected that my tastes at the time hadn’t been developed enough to fully appreciate it.

Also, the older Lutens stuff had some serious chops.

I’m testing “For Your Love” from Mizensir. It went on with a juicy berry fun punch, but pretty quickly went into drydown mode. I feel like I have worn a perfume before that smelled exactly like this in its final stages–I can remember my scarves smelling like this long after I wore the perfume–but I can’t recall what it was.

    Ah well.

Popping in on the early side today since I didn’t come by until late yesterday. I am taking Friday off for a four day weekend so have been scrambling to get some things done. I was also glued to the impeachment trial yesterday (and that’s all I’ll say about that). But I did smell wonderful in Ormonde Jayne Woman as part of my interpretation of the CP to wear perfumes I’ve been loyal to for years and that are dependable choices for me.

Today my dependable love is Léa by Calypso St. Barth, which was sadly discontinued. I’m down to less than 10ml in my bottle. It’s a gorgeous almond vanilla musk perfume. I know madtowngirl is also a fan.

I’m in Italian Leather today. I tried wearing it earlier this winter and didn’t like it so had set it aside to wait for spring. Dug it out of hiding this morning and today it’s hitting the spot nicely – just perfect. We’re supposed to get snow later this afternoon, and it will be falling on wet streets so … I agree with pixel that it’s a good day to hunker down and watch a movie ? … provided our power stays on. ?

Lady Rose Lion, because I wanted to test it again., hoping I will like this blind buy a bit more. It’s not so bad, the peach, Rose and moss are nice. I think I have a bit of a problem with the hay note and the deep balsam. Two tiny sprays last a whole day. I think I can wear this in the cold season, just wishing it would be a bit more chypre like and a bit less sweet.

Testing a couple of By Kilians today – Apple Brandy on one wrist and Angel’s Share on the other (inspired by She-Ra last week to finally get a sample of this one). Both are tasty but I prefer the Apple Brandy. The Angel’s Share is spice-heavy on me and it is overpowering the other notes. The Apple Brandy comes off more balanced, though I wish it were as strong as the Angel’s Share. The combined whiff on these two is quite delicious!

Puer tea from Palais des Thes today.

I don’t know, maybe once in five years? And if it falls it’s very thin and light, and doesn’t last. But it’s exciting for kids! We’re somewhat likely to get ice and that can be a total disaster on the roads, especially since Texans don’t know how to drive on ice. As shown by the tragic, terrible accidents today near both Dallas and Austin, where it’s already icy.

?, but it’s not red, the bottle is not red and the box is not red! Regardless, for Lunar New Year’s Eve, No.19 is particularly perfect because it represents to me the qualities the CP wants to convey: diligent, dependable, honest, loyal, and industrious.

Ack! I’d rather take the snow! My front door is drafty, so the Polar Vortex just saunters in and sits down on the couch. ?

Thanks to everyone that sent good vibes last night for my meeting early this morning. It worked! I finally was able to speak to someone who is going to at least try and help.
I chose Le Lion as my morning sotd. In case I needed to roar!, lol.
I went to the mall this afternoon and spritzed the new Angel Nova. Out of all the horrible ambroxan bombs out there, this is the worst! I hated this so much that it actually made me feel angry.

I’m glad your phone call went well! Yay for good vibes, and you smell great. Once I get out of my little rut, I’ll probably wear Le Lion again. ?

I hadn’t worn it in awhile either. I still think it’s great!

Very pleased to hear that your phone call went well! But “Oy vey!” on that Angel Nova. Mugler has had a couple of big misses for you lately, haven’t they?

Indeed, jalapeno. I think it’s a real shame what they are doing now. Nova had about 3 seconds of promise. I could smell a fruitpunch and ginger ale mix at first, and it seemed pretty fun. I would have liked it had it stayed that way.

Is Angel Nova another pink perfume?

It’s Escada like, but in less than a minute I could only smell ambroxan. It was incredibly strong on me, with only one spray. Without the ambroxan, I think it would have been a flrty summer scent.

Testing a perfume that makes you angry is a new one for me! Disappointed yes, shocked yes, even appalled, but not angry yet, although I definitely won’t put it past myself… I get mad at having blood drawn for tests and short stories, so I imagine I’m perfectly capable of being mad at perfumes. Hope you managed to get it off in short order.

I really am angry with the company. I understand Mugler wants to make money, but they have really abandoned their fan base. Nova and the last Alien flanker Mirage had no business calling themselves flankers. Maybe if they had their own names, I wouldn’t have cared. I like Aura.

True, there’s definitely a responsibility with a flanker to keep enough of that original perfume DNA to make it recognizable for the fan base.

Otherwise they’re alienating (no pun intended) the very people they’re marketing to. Sorry it was such a bad experience for you!

I’m ok now, lol. It would have been great though to have wanted to add it to my collection. Their loss!

Mirage was a scrubber for me and my sample of Nova has been untouched out of fear. The new ownership is tanking the brand.

Brrrr, it’s cold here! I told the dog for a walk and lasted about 20 minutes. It’s 37 degrees, feels like 28. This southerner really can’t take the cold. I placed a curbside grocery order yesterday, and added more items to the list at about midnight last night, kinda like I do when a hurricane is in the Gulf. Yeah, I’m a little on edge!

I’ve been in Fresh Cream Soft Suede + BBW Vanilla Bean Noel yesterday and today. I need to wear something different tomorrow!

The one in Ft. Worth? Yes, it was horrible. So sad. It’s raining here off and on now, but we will have the dreaded wintery mix on Sunday night. Our nighttime temps will be at or below freezing from Saturday night through Thursday of next week. Monday night low is 10 degrees. ? This is not typical of southeast Texas.

I think you’re smart to stock up from the store. No need to drive in a wintery mix if you can avoid it.

Paying attention to a hunch like that is smart thinking! Definitely time to stock up if weather is going to go further downhill.

You know it took me literally decades to be able to wear AE! I kept trying though, now I love it. I had to just accept that less actually is more with this one. Stay warm!?

Less is definitely more. My bottle is newer, maybe 5 years old; I’ve noticed subtle differences between this one and the version decades back. I remember wearing it to work at an office back in the day?

Logging in late to say hello, and report SotD as Modern Muse Nuit. A very successful blind buy and I love the chamomile note. Overall, I find it very similar to Modern Muse, which I like as a don’t have to think go to. I claim a couple CP points for any EL because they are my loyalty scents.
