Tuesday scent of the day 12/1

Posted by Robin on 1 December 2020 225 Comments

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit! Welcome to December. It's also Giving Tuesday, World AIDS Day, and happy 75th to Bette Midler! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm doing a variation on yesterday, in the sorta-something-you-might-drink-with-a-cookie-ish Hermès Eau Claire des Merveilles. Tea at the moment is Numi Aged Earl Grey with a little pinch of Harney French Super Blue Lavender.

Reminder: 12/4 is National Cookie Day. Do what you like with the theme, and feel free to link to your favorite recipe.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows items from the Alice in Wonderland collection at Whittard Chelsea. The "Tea Party" bone china teapot is £40.

    Rabbit rabbit rabbit ?
How could my nephew be 50 today? It was five minutes ago I kissed his fuzzy baby head.
Post shower Chergui overlooked these past few months.

December already? Wow….what a relief! LOL Be gone 2020! :)

I sprayed some Angel Muse last night at bedtime and it was still a pretty good skin scent this morning, so Angel Muse is the scent of the day. I need to wear this one more often on cold blustery days!

Tea today is an almond milk cappuccino made at home.

I know this doesn’t get a lot of love, but I am in Jersey.
Its the most unusual of the Exclusif line, I enjoy its soft sillage.

    Full face of Chanel makeup

This weather..so odd. I am in a silk shirt again. Its to hot for sweaters but not warm enough for a t-shirt.

For my neighbor for her holiday present a Diptyque candle, my other girlfriend a Chanel nail polish and Kiels hand cream. For my some Chanel skincare.

I smelled the Byredo candles and they were too strong and too heavy for my taste.

Wore URC this morning. The power is currently out in my neck of the woods because of the snow storm. Took a “shower” (bucket of water) to get the essential parts of me. Looking at Kyoto for my afternoon perfume. With the wind storm a couple weeks ago, the power company might have learned something before this snow.

Power failures are such a bummer. We used to lose power many times each winter, until the power company did major maintenance to the lines that run through the State Recreation areas near by and really cleared out the right of ways. Much better now, the last time we lost power was because someone had a wreck and knocked over some poles or something. I hope you get your power back soon. Do you have coping mechanisms, a gas generator, or a wood stove, or what not?

We have a wood burning stove at home. Worst comes to worst we can cook on it. We do have a generator but dad is holding out on using it right now. At work we have the generator going but it just keeps the lights on and the groceries cold but no heat. Brought in my Kindle and cellphone chargers to charge my stuff.

I have no idea what he was going for with this one, but I can tell you it’s not ever going on my skin again. Going back for a second shower now.

I am feeling unreasonably grateful that we are finally in December this year. Bring on the winter weather and endless darkness, I’m happy this year is nearly over.

SOTM is Bronze Goddess body cream layered under older formulation Kenzo Amour. Maybe I smell a little like a coconut macaroon? Not sure, but I smell yummy. Mr. Spicebomb made sure to comment as well. :)

I bought myself a Jackie Lawson digital advent calendar this year, and I’m happy to get to start “opening it up” each day now. Makes me want to risk buying a real Christmas tree and seeing how the youngest kitty manages with it. . .

Oooh, macaroons! Maybe I should make some for the holidays. I make the rough and ready sort, a lot of shredded coconut with some sugar and egg whiles to glue it together. Don’t worry about fluffy, that is not what I go for in a macaroon. :-)

I have never made my own macaroons, and I think you’ve put the nail on the head–I’m afraid I’ll “mess up” the texture. Sounds like you believe they’re delicious regardless? That’s reassuring and might inspire me to give them a try.

SOTD: Rose 31, a new favorite

As for cookies, I love to eat them and I love to make them but I’m sharing a recipe I’ve yet to make for the story behind the recipe alone! As a Louise Penny fan and especially a detective Gamache fan.. this brought me such delight that Dorie Greenspan, a baking hero of mine, is as enamored of Three Pines and Gamache as I am. Link here: https://nyti.ms/2JCCDNG

I’m convinced that covid is the universe’s plot to force me to use technology. So feel free to blame me for this year.

I made my son do it with me. I’m very uncomfortable being on camera, and actually concider this an invasion of privacy. She has to be “seen” tomorrow to get her medication tomorrow. I asked them if we could just come to the parking lot and they could see her out the window, while we did a phone visit. They wouldn’t go for it. After tomorrow though, I will look into having her regular doctor take over the prescription, as I have other issues with the one she will see tomorrow.

SotD Alien Musc Mystérieux for some plush comfort. Cookie adjacent with its vanilla, perhaps, but not in gourmand territory.

About to put on my big-girl pants and pick up a new laptop… My former one held out an astonishing 6 years, but it got stepped on last Friday, adding to already-significant wear and team damage… time to replace while I still have a chance to get the data off it. Glad I managed to hold off on Black Friday/Cyber Monday frag spending!

Yeah it’s tough choosing online! I did some pre-screening, reserved for pickup but then verified at the store that I liked it versus other models. Hopefully it lasts me a solid 6 years like its predecessor!

Oh… it was a 2-in-1 laptop that I was using in tablet configuration for work, so the screen was facing up, and I left it on the floor temporarily instead of on the chair. The other worker in my area stepped on the screen by accident, 100% my bad.

It already had some screen/keyboard damage and occasional hard drive errors as it was 6 years old, but that was sort of the nail in the coffin as then the screen started flickering and freezing frequently.

The new laptop is up and running smoothly, at all odds, and the old one managed to function while I transfered off all its data to external storage and gave it a factory reset.

I’m the sort that WILL wait until it’s absolutely positively necessary to replace electronics, so I think I was maybe lucky that it gave me a last gasp (and Cyber Monday deals).

Otherwise I would have had to pay for a new laptop AND for someone to try to retrieve the data off the old one if it completely bricked. Not that I did that with the last one in 2013 or anything *cough*…

Dior Mitzah on this foggy morning.

I’m planning to send friends around the country cookies for the holidays. Before I embark, do you all have recommendations for your favorite cookies? They should be hard (I think that will be easiest to ship and tastiest ~1 week after baking). I’ve currently planned on Earl Grey shortbread, chocolate chip shortbread, and rosemary caraway shortbread, but uh, that’s a lot of shortbread and I’d love other ideas.

I’d also love suggestions of other homemade presents (I’m already planning to send flavored salts and sugars using ingredients from my backyard garden). Thanks in advance!

Mmmm. I make a batch of caramel every year, but I don’t know, I’m not feeling it this year; just seems too fussy for my feeble brain. I did also make a big batch of orangettes to give out as it’s-quarantine-Thanksgiving-don’t-be-sad presents. Haha. So we must think alike :)

My absolute favorite Christmas cookies are usually called “Mexican Wedding Cakes” in cookbooks. Ground nuts (I use hazelnuts, since I’m in Oregon, but almonds are delicious, too), powdered sugar, butter, etc. You roll them in more powdered sugar when they’re still warm, and it’s melty, crunchy, nutty, and easy to eat half a dozen in a sitting!

Rabbit x 3. I’m in another DSH sample: Cathedral. It’s an old fave, a rich opoponax incense.

I can’t be glad about 2020 ending so fast although of course, I’m with everyone on the difficulties of the year. I don’t want to wish away my life and I already feel like we missed almost a year of life. May 2021 bring better news and better health.

Excited to have rabbited this morning as I usually always forget!!! ?

Trying Gallagher Vanilla Silk which was a Black Friday blind buy and it’s lovely. Notes are very accurate: vanilla, white amber musk, woody. There is probably a smidge of iso E in the background but nothing overwhelming. Plenty of vanilla as one would expect. Quite pleased with my impulsive early Friday morning purchase. ;)

I’m enjoying Ormonde Jayne Ambre Royal today, which is turning out to be a surprise hit for me. Most ambers feel too dense and sweet on me, but this is light and floral and elegant.

I am! Their “signature collection” sample set was another birthday gift. It includes Ormonde Man and Woman, Tolu, Champaca, Frangipani, Ta’if, and Ambre Royal. Any of your favorites in there?

I’m afraid to try Ta’if again because I sampled it a year or so ago and got a terrible headache. Maybe a tiny spray on a tiny card?

I’m in OJ Woman today – if you haven’t sampled that one yet, I highly recommend it. Spicy, warm, and somewhat unusual – you don’t have to love vetiver as a note, but it helps if you at least like it.

When I lived in an apartment, our toilet broke on a Saturday morning, and our landlady asked if we could wait until Monday so she wouldn’t have to pay weekend rates to a plumber. Uh, NO? Were we supposed to walk down to the local grocery store every time we needed to use the facilities the next two days?!

Take care of yourself and get some rest / time off.

Nowadays i block time in my work calendar for walks. Sometimes i even take a 2 hour break in the afternoon, so i can catch some daylight (especially when weather is good). Then ill work in the evening some more. (Though mostly not past 7 PM).
Bonus: i get lots if things done in the evening (no one bothering me with phone calls or chats haha).

Since i started scheduling breaks and ‘away from screen time’, it improved my energy levels somewhat.

And even though i cant go on a holiday, sometimes I take a few days off. To sleep and eat well. Or for long walks.

(Black Knight..? I keep confusing those black and dark knights as well ? )

I actually just bought a real monthly calendar so I can see my month and how I’m using my time so that I get more balance in my schedule. I find that my phone calendar just doesn’t help me this way — I need to see the full month in front of me to fully grasp what I am and am not doing with my time.

Well I can’t take time off until Christmas so I will just have to hang in there and stick it out till the 23rd. Which I will manage.

It’s been a huge change, plus working from home just does not suit me. Mind you, I think I’m doing fine all things considered and I do enjoy what I am doing, which I haven’t in a long time.

And thanks for the tips, not that I can really apply most of them, but it’s always nice to feel that people are trying to help.

Just a reminder, if you or a loved one is in the process of choosing Medicare Plans, it doesn’t hurt to review your options. Bottom line for me based on my mom’s experience, do not get seduced by all the benefits of switching to Medicare Plan C (Medicare Advantage) – you are not required to switch. It may be cheaper as long as you know nothing catastrophic will happen to the insured. Medicare Plan A and B with Medigap is what I would choose if I had to pick a plan.

On the Mugler bandwagon today with Alien edp and enjoying it. I’ve had a bottle for quite some time that I got because it was perfume-math free on Ebay (bottle cost < [gas + mileage + time at mall to test]). I like it when I wear it, but it does not call to me. I just saw the box while dithering over what my perfume "mood" was so I put an end to the suspense. I am never sure how to classify it, but I think the jasmine is not the indolic type? Have a good Tuesday, all!

Alien is an odd one. It’s not indolic, but not too clean either.

I’ve found Alien to be a big floral-ish amber.

    Hi guys!

    1) Rabbit x 3

    2) Am shocked that it is December 1st. How?

    3) Am in the actual internet Hypebeast Baccarat 540 (sample!). Very close to my dupe, but more persistent and with a slightly more sillage. The scent builds like my dupe as well. Like I said with the dupe from Dossier, the saffrony/amber scent is VERY attractive and is a great unisex in my humble opinion.

    But! $380?

Get the dupe at $39 + $8 at Dossier or Alt
For a similiar vibe in an EDT , seek out Philosophy Fresh Cream Soft Suede OR Warm Cashmere (for real) – the drydown gives similiar vibes- and is perfect for stay at home dressing.
For a warmer, deeper scent, seek out Cuir de Lancome(if you can find it in the grey market), which has that haylike, saffrony scent up on top and then deepens and sweetens.

I think BR 540 is soooo cozy and wonderful. I would never buy it myself because it’s too expensive but would happily wear it if Santa ever left it under my tree. ;) Thanks for the dupe recommendations.

BR 540 is truly lovely; the scent has developed over the hours and it is truly cozy and wonderful. But I truly think the direct dupes are just as good, just a wee less lingering trail. Also- check out Oil Perfumery which is apparently very good as well!

Thanks for the comparison. I’m curious, if the duper can dupe an indie perfumer’s perfume for a similar price point discount, would you buy the dupe?

What I look for in a niche or indie perfume is a vibe, then followed by price. I have found that many indie places, while pricey, are not horribly expensive and are worth the full price (Tauer and Miller Harris come to mind) . But if a dupe house gets a vibe ‘right’ then I will buy as a perfume in it’s own right. Example- with Beauty Pie, I got their Petals &Heliotrope fragrances because it seemed like a dupe for Another 13. It was not an exact dupe but got that vibe of super clean white musk and flower scented powder just right (for me, working in a tech office). I like it in it’s own right, it was super affordable and best of all I got truly lavish with the scent without worry.

        Tl;dr yes, it depends!?

In Chabaud Orangerie Musicale (love the name). Thank you to the lovely Karina for the sample which is my introduction to this house, I want to explore it now. It’s an orange blossom to my nose (I haven’t looked up the notes yet). Honestly, it’s right up there with my favorite APdlFd’O Neroli Blanc.

That’s pretty big praise. Orange blossom to me is what tuberose is to you. I can only wear it in a supporting role.

Ah, funny even though we are usually perfume twins, we still each have a different floral note we don’t enjoy in a prominent role. I do enjoy Loulou but then there is so much going on in it.

Is the orange blossom soapy or indolic? Or somewhere in between?

Neither one nir the other, if anything it has a little bit of the medicinal edge of the true orange blossom absolu if you have smelled any.

After a mild and almost warm November, its getting colder.

I am prepared. Bought a merino wool legging and a beanie.
Mainly for horse riding outside (I also enjoy trail riding in autumn and winter ?)
and perfect for long walks as well of course.

    SotD is Jasmin Rouge.

    Hi, folks!

November seemed like a really long month to me, though I know it’s technically not one. My sleep patterns were pretty goofed up before the time change, but the time change didn’t help. And assorted doctors of mine were all trying to fit in yearly check-ups in November. I guess it’s good to know that my skin and various other parts of me are in fairly good shape. I know I’ve been relatively fortunate this year compared to many, but it’s been a long year.

I got the roll-on of the Pacifica Mediterranean Fig fragrance that I’d ordered not too long ago on Saturday. The seller had allowed a lot of time for delivery through the Royal Mail and the U.S. Postal Service. Apparently it went through pretty quickly.

You had a lot of things going on with your house, and your husband needing a shoulder operation and all. I can see where time would go by pretty quickly for you with trying to get things fixed.

Oh, I forgot to say — an author I’m a fan of and support on Patreon told his fans that there are now fragrances out from a little new company that represent a couple of the author’s better-known characters. I was curious and got samples, but haven’t really had the chance to try them. “Better-known” is relative, because it’s all very niche in a number of ways. But it was interesting to me that this was a thing.

Gloomy grey clouds and some wind today that was strong enough to push the truck around while running errands. Could be much worse (see yesterday’s weather!). Both cats are currently hunkered down on heat vents, enjoying the warmth.

There is a 30% off code that Clinique has been sending me for about a week, so that is tempting. But I really ought to see how much of my bottle I use in December, shouldn’t I?

SOTD is Histoires de Parfums 1804, from a discovery set I’ve had for a while but hadn’t fully explored. This one came up in a CP over the summer and I love it!

No walk for me today — the forecast led me to believe that the rain would let up for a few hours this afternoon. When I was able to take a break around 3:30, the rain was turning icy. At least I got my daily yoga in this morning!

SOTD was DSH December. Today was the first actual cold day of the season. It was ~30 F this morning, which is quite cold for us. I was very glad of it, as I get enough of summer, and it was clear and sunny, not rainy. Rainy cold is nasty, but sunny cold is quite all right. We had a few fall-like days a few weeks ago, but then it had warmed up again and we were getting temps in the 80’s, which I consider much too warm for November.
