Monday scent of the day 11/30

Posted by Robin on 30 November 2020 240 Comments

Happy Cyber Monday! Also, a couple author birthdays: Mark Twain, Lucy Maud Montgomery. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Hermès L'Ambre des Merveilles.

Reminder: 12/4 is National Cookie Day. Do what you like with the theme, and feel free to link to your favorite recipe.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Wore Lyric preshower and since I have showered, I am commando right this second. Will be wearing Noontide Petals for thus afternoon. Expecting to get tons of snow this evening and tomorrow. Had someone in my department at work quit yesterday and I have to let people know that I have doctors appointments this week and can’t change my appointments. I see that on Luckyscent and the Andy Tauer website, Une Rose Chypree is either out of stock or has been discontinued.

I was looking to purchase Une Rose Chypree, I hope it’s still in production!

Une Rose Chypree is such a great big boss rose, I hope it’s not discontinued. Be safe in the snow! We have lake effect snow bands set up but our county is in the middle and no snow is expected. I love snow but not sad to miss it.

Oh, I might remember hearing that URC was going out of production. . . I know I felt an urgency to purchase a BuB a while back. That might be why. . .

Planning on venturing to BG to take advantage of their gift card event and buy some candles for friends for the holidays and maybe something for myself. I am sure I will try on perfume there so I will keep you posted.

Its raining but not that cold. Green silk shirt and black pants

Hi all, SOTD is liberal amounts of Youth Dew Bath Oil. Taking SmokeyToes to the vet for a follow up. Keeping fingers crossed his numbers improve and they don’t find anything on the abdominal scan.

Properly caffenated, Holiday cards and packages ready to drop off at the PO.
I’ll have to walk later as too much going on this morning.
    Everyone have a lovely day!

I went with vanilla today (a very loose interpretation of the CP) – Lush American Pie body conditioner and Sylvaine Delacourte Virgile.

By the way, there is an offer on Sylvaine Delacourte’s website:
“Order a 100ml perfume or 2 x 30ml and receive as a gift a 30 ml perfume of your choice with code HOLIDAY”.

Thank you everyone who gave me suggestions over the weekend for a light floral perfume for one of my sisters present. They were all very helpful! I took note of every single one and will make a decision this week. I will report back.

Super rainy and windy day, but not so cold. Wearing SL La Fille de Berlin and debating if I should get a full bottle?. It has been on my shopping list for a while already…

Not to enable or anything, but YES get a full bottle. Good sales at the discounters will let you splurge and you won’t regret it. I find that when I have a full bottle of something I love, I will wear it with abandon (lots of hajusuuri type sprays!) and feel great!

I grabbed a Jo Malone Myrrh and Tonka sample today, which isn’t exactly cookie like, but it’s cozy and sweet. I like it best when the myrrh is still bright.

While I’ve been telling myself that school is fine, I couldn’t sleep AGAIN last night, so it’s definitely become a Sunday pattern. Must look into better ways to manage my anxiety than fretting all night! Maybe cookies?

Awww sleep/night anxiety sucks! Sorry to hear it’s getting to you.

My friend who works as a personal trainer gave me some advice, including dimming lights earlier in the afternoon, taking magnesium and drinking my sleepytime tea a bit earlier in the evening (I prefer ones with hops, like Nighty Night from Traditional Medicinals).

I also got a tub of Olly brand GABA gummies for stress. I suspect they’re mostly placebo effect but right now I am open to anything.

Lastly, I have a little white noise machine (mine is a Marpac Hush which is 100% marketed as for babies but whatever!) It runs 2-3 nights before needing a recharge. I used to just use it for traveling but this year it’s been a lifesaver for when my brain is in anxiety mode and waking up to slight noises will sometimes be cause for hours of interrupted sleep.

That is very good advice teebear! I took magnesium too and apparently helps a lot with anxiety and sleep -it seems we are all deficient nowadays as not very present in the soil, especially in stressful periods when body demands are bigger. It’s hard to disconnect from electronics but if I manage to put my phone aside in the evenings in favour of books I also see a difference. Some colleagues also swear by taking melatonin before bed.. For me it’s great to fall asleep but then sleep is superficial so not worth it.

I like the Sleepy Time tea, both the flavor and the ritual are so relaxing. Teavana’s Peach Chamomile is also delicious.
I need a good night’s sleep, and use all the tools I can to get it – earplugs, Sleepy time tea, yoga poses (legs up the wall), and lavender pillow spray all help.
I didn’t know about magnesium, should look that up!

I copied Robin and am wearing L’Ambre des Merveilles today. I don’t have a whole lot of sweet perfumes, and mostly I get caramel corn from L’AdM, but I can sense a cookie tie-in too. Questions for those of you who own FBs of the Merveilles line: does the lack of a cap bother you? Do you leave the bottle as-is or use the little plastic sleeve that comes with the bottle? Just curious.

Nope. I do have to say that any such bottle I put back in the box does have the plastic cover and it’s not to ward against evaporation but rather for not staining the box.

Snowing gently in Michigan. My phone is on the blink and ATT is not bringing me another one, so it is a slower than usual Monday at the hospital. SOTD = the sadly discontinued Dilettante by Hiram Green. I have my decant in regular rotation, because I fear it evaporating or going off, so I might as well wear it, right? Not on the cookie theme, but I smell great, if I do say so myself. :-)

So National Cookie Day (December 4th) just happens to be my birthday….I like cookies better than cake anyway!! I usually travel to celebrate my day, but this year will be from the kitchen to the living room to the den, etc. To celebrate all week I will be wearing perfumes that remind of places I love (or want to visit)….Today, amid the crazy wind and rain, I am in Ineke’s Field Notes from Paris….love it…the perfume and the city!

Rabbit rabbit rabbit…The first day of summer masquerading as early spring, with a cold southerly and grey sky. Still wearing my duvet jacket to walk the dogs. Yesterday was St Andrews Day (30/11) so a fair bit of bagpiping was to be had, as we are a very Scottish-centric city. Off to look at the cemetery rabbits soon, wearing Wander which isn’t cooki adjacent.

Happy start of the week! I’m in Selperniku Extrait to bring some cheer on a cloudy day, and breakfast was some raisin and cheese danish and a nice strong moka coffee with cream.

Just finished several weeks of production insanity on a contract and am back to underemployed pace today. I love making money and feeling useful, BUT the pandemic added yet another layer of potential anxiety to what is normally a stressful artistic project on its own.

So I’m equally relieved it’s over, and my ability to check in on NST again and sleep regular hours is making me ultra happy today!

In other news, there are MANY offers out there for Black Friday sales (which started on November 1st ?), continuing on to Cyber Monday and beyond, with or without discount codes. One thing to beware is some perfume boutiques charge more than the typical, some even as high as 32% more! While I like to support Small Business, marking up will not only turn away people, it will piss off people who ended up getting fleeced. I didn’t get fleeced but I was gobsmacked at what I saw! Buyer beware or don’t buy at all until you’ve done your research. I have found LuckyScent to be a good benchmark of MSRP.

Heh. I bought a new carry on suitcase at Macy’s Black Friday sale. They had it discounted something like 80%. I checked the manufacturer site, where it was also on sale. Original price was much, much less. Sale price in Macy’s was by far the best around…they just lied about the size of discount. Silly.

? but were you more likely to buy at 50% off vs 80% off if the amount you end up paying is the same regardless of the discount? In any case, the % offs usually make me look at other places before I trigger a buy, if at all.

The original price listed at Macy’s seemed overly expensive, so that’s what drove me to check MSRP. For something advertised as BF sale in large store, I expect more than 30% discount. (Small business less of a discount). But, ultimately, the price I pay is most important. Plenty of things can be 80% off amd still out of my price range. ?

I’m working in my sleep shirt, think I somehow got the covid. Three days of sort of icky, but according to the news, I should get into the death zone in the next couple days. SOTD is some Une Rose Chypree, inspired from the conversation above. Haven’t worn this one in a while. Still lovely.

I keep cookie dough in my freezer so I can make cookies whenever I decide I want some. Right now I have 3 logs of Cream Cheese Icebox Cookies, from the Joy of Cooking (edition from about 20 years ago?). I rolled the outsides in colored sugar, and I slice them thin, so there’s wonderful, creamy sugar cookie with crunchy, slightly caramelized sugar on the edges. Yum!

I look forward to it! Did you see the article about olfactory perception and motivation? I’m considering getting the book… In the article the writer says the scents that he wore in his youth to exercise motivate him now in his later years – coppertone and Polo – or something! I’v mentioned that I like citrus and vetiver scents to exercise in but recently I’v been wondering about melon/calone scents? The closest I have is Apres La Mousson… Perhaps I should try it. I would actually like a watermelon scent but not sure of any widely distributed ones?

Yes, you mean the article in Psychology today? I think that will have to be a separate posting, since we try to limit ourselves to under 1000 words, and I think my post is already longer than that. . . . Besides, more articles on sniffies means more chances to rope people into perfumistahood! Ahem. . . I mean, more chances to share my love of perfume. :)

I’m not a fan of either melon or calone notes, so I’m no good as a reference to how they might mix with working out. I definitely don’t have anything watermelony in my collection. Maybe someone else will have recs?

Sure, the one in Psychology Today – Robin posted it just before the this daily forum.

I’m not too much into calones either. That 90s trend missed me ? But I constantly crave watermelon in the summer so I was thinking a scent might be nice… Would need to be more specific – and way more juicy – than that vague watery melon note.

Something else I like for exercising on my own (not in a gym or class) is Lush’s Avocado Co-Wash. It’s SWeet so only one spray but the effervescent citrus qualities work for me. Their Calacas, which smell like lime gummy sweets, might work too but I don’t (yet?) own it. Oh – and white musk (for me SMN’s Muschio Oro which is like strong aldehydes and soap, drying down with some citrus rind and incense).

Floris Honey Oud today. I just love this one.

Back to salad for lunch- waaaaay too many carbs were eaten over the past few days! I love to bake so maybe I’ll make a few batches of cookies to take into the office this week.

They are at my office- we get tested regularly and they’re basically “take at your own risk” kinda thing. People bring in stuff all the time. I usually don’t take it because I watch what I eat but it goes pretty fast lol.

    Wearing Dior Addict today.

I have pulled out my recipes and am looking to bake a ‘trial batch’ of Toblerone shortbread; this year I will experiment as a whipped shortbread version. How bad can that be?

Sorry it wasn’t a good result for you. I stumbled across this particular recipe awhile ago and its pretty good, but this year I want to try it whipped instead. I’m hoping it will be ok!

That’s OK. I used to make some killer peanut butter cookies… I had to immediately freeze the batch, or my dad would eat them all!

I’d like to hear how your cookie experiment turns out.

I smell like lemon pie in A Sweet Pastry in Paris. There is a blurb on the box where the perfumer describes a boring trip back from work being interrupted by the smell of lemon pie wafting from the bakery and succumbing to the temptation. This basement bargain has been my holy grail for a couple of weeks.

Honestly it’s the only Zara item I actually own. I find a lot of their scents pleasant but short-lived. I did like one from the Jo Malone line of theirs but wasn’t moved to actually purchase. I should test all the ones from that range. Which ones have you ordered? I think the men’s tobacco range sounds nice but the store near me doesn’t carry them.

Oh, great cookie scent! Never smelled that perfume, but I still crave those cookies from my trip to Sicily. Friend that I went with and I kept saying (after we got back) we needed to have a cookie making party, but we never did. Maybe after we get through COVID.

Really yucky weather today! I will admit that we had several rather nice days recently, so I’ve been a little spoiled. But enough with all these Watches and Warnings!

Just had a blast of thunder that scared the daylights out of both the cats. Poor Spooky kitty is hiding behind the sofa right now. ??

What a coincidence! I made a batch of cookies this afternoon. This isn’t necessarily my favorite cookie recipe (not sure I could pick a favorite cookie, any more than I could pick a favorite perfume), but it’s what I made today:

    https://joythebaker.com/2020/08/everybodys-after-school-cookies/

I wore Indochine today for my last ortho appointment. Must have been wafting; the nurse wanted to know what I was wearing. When someone can detect fragrance through a mask, maybe I’m wearing too much? Anyway, the good news is my finger fractures are both healed. I’ll have 1-2 more PT sessions and then I’ll be turned loose to play on my own. ?

Has anyone else had an order from Lucky Scent in which they got none of their requested samples? I just received my order (of two FBs), and of the six samples included, not a one of them was one I requested. It makes me wonder if got somebody’s else’s samples by mistake.

It’s two bottles of April Aromatics. The bottles aren’t for me, or at least one of them isn’t. Calling All Angels is my husband’s Christmas gift. The second bottle (Ray of Light) I haven’t decided yet whether to give it to him or keep it for myself. I burned through my sample vial of it in no time. It doesn’t have great lasting power, as is to be expected for a citrusy scent, but while it lasts it is fantastic.

A couple of the samples I requested were a bit pricer (~$8 samples vs. $4 for some of the cheaper ones), but I have requested and received such samples before. I could understand if one or two of my choices had not been included–they could perhaps have been out of stock–but to get none of my choices seemed odd.

I haven’t ordered from LuckyScent lately but all the times I have, I got the samples I requested. I always add an extra request in case one of the ones I liked was not available (and sometimes I get the extra one too).

SOTD is Calyx, which is one that I got in the Sephora sale. It was pretty much my signature scent in the mid-90s, and then I started sneezing violently whenever I wore it, so hadn’t had any for probably 20 years. I assume that some reformulation has occurred, but at least I’m not sneezing now! I still love it, but it’s funny that I think of it as GREEN when, at least according to Tania Sanchez’s review in The Guide, it should be “pink” (guava and rose).
