Thursday scent of the day 11/19

Posted by Robin on 19 November 2020 215 Comments

Almost-Friday and World Philosophy Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Donna Karan Black Cashmere, because it's awfully cold outside and thegoddessrena mentioned it yesterday.

Reminder: on 11/20, for Bo Derek's birthday, wear a perfume that you would rate an 11 on a scale of 1 to 10.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’ve moved on from Alkemia to wearing Dame Dark Horse. It’s my other favorite from this house, next to New Musk Man.

      You smell great!

Have you ever ordered from Dame directly? I just did for the first time about two weeks ago, but my order still hasn’t shipped. I reached out just to ask and received a lovely note saying that it would ship Tuesday, but still no confirmation! Hmm… once again, a good time to blame the virus.

I’ve ordered from Dame directly a number of times, but not in the past 1.5 years. Back in the day, everything arrived promptly and beautifully packaged, with lots of fun samples :-/ I hope you get yours soon!

I’ve ordered directly in the last year, pre-COVID, and all was prompt and lots of samples as Koyel mentioned. Sorry you’re not having the same experience.

Smelling divine in Gallivant Bukhara for my birthday! My full bottle blind buy present to myself, based on Lucasai’s gorgeous review. It is a beautiful iris scent with so many facets that I love. Right now I would say it is 11 out of 10! ❤

It will be a regular working day. Looking forward to taking a long walk in the park at lunch time and enjoying a slice or two… of Red Velvet cake when my youngest sister stops by later this afternoon with my baby nieces and her hubby. No special dinner until Thanksgiving. Counting my blessings today and being thankful for everything I have, especially the love of family, friends and my dog Yei!

    Happy Thursday, everyone! ??

I have been reaching for a manufacturer’s sample of Dries Van Noten all week, so that’s probably my SOTD today, too. I like smelling like cookies! I would score DVN as a solid 8/10 perfume. It’s a bit too linear for me, but it’s unique and interesting the whole time, and it smells delicious.

I was bummed that I couldn’t wear this. I had to choose between being able to breathe vs smelling good. DvN was the only perfume that had this impact on me.

I am writing the blog post, but it will be a few weeks before I post it to the site. I share the blog with about a dozen other women, and we rotate who writes each day. I will be sure to share when it’s done! Glad you’re interested in it! Hopefully the nonperfumistas will find it interesting, too.

I would agree with 8/10 — it’s a good no brainer and I am glad to have a small bottle but I don’t put it on and swoon or anything.

Yes, I think that’s why a few large samples is all I’ve acquired so far. As you’ve said before with other scents, I’d happily wear it, if a bottle fell into my lap! :)

          Eye shadows I love:
Singles, Magic Night (aubergine), Sillage, (petal pink with slight shimmer), Vert Khaki (golden khaki with slight shimmer).
          Quads:
Kashka Beige (perfect for sepia-toned evening makeup)
Winter Nights (golden khaki, forest green with gold-flecks, a gold-beige and pink-beige for highlighting).

I have too many Chanel lipsticks to count. My favorites are:
Rouge Coco Shine – Deauville and Temeare
Rouge Coco – Experimental (bright coral-red), Misia (warm-peach-red), Gabrielle (muted brick red), Venise (90’s brown-red).

    I’m wearing vintage Cabochard today.
A gift from my dear departed Aunt. Sometime in the mid nineties she gave me her bottle of this and F de Fragonard. I sniffed them both and wrapped them in tissue and put them away for safe keeping. I didn’t open them again until someone here on NST mentioned Cabochard and I thought hey, I think I have that. Sure enough, packed away in my basement of trash and treasure.. twenty years later. Lol. It’s so gorgeous and lives on my shelf now. I’ve been able to date it back to the mid seventies. Definitely an 11!
I’m hoping one day to remember if I’ve put large amounts of money in my basement. ?

Hello all, my SOTD is Chanel’s Coromandel. I do think this is nearly the perfect fragrance for me. It hits all of my favorite notes: Patchouli, Orris, Benzoin, Incense, Olibanum, Amber, Woods, and Musk.

Lots of house cleaning to do today, laundry and dusting so I can spend the weekend playing. :)

I’ll make the chocolate torte and creamed spinach, this afternoon in preparation for tomorrow – they always taste better the following day.
First, shoes on and get my three miles in, so I can misbehave tomorrow!

Woke up in Lyric this morning but switched to no 5 edp. Just wanted something a little less demanding. Besides I want to finish this bottle that I have had for the past 7 or 8 years. I was talking to my supervisor on Monday and she said that there is nothing about not being allowed to wear perfume. Fake nails, yes, perfume, no. So when everyone is gone, I can wear what I want.

Still going to stick with little dabs. My supervisor didn’t get either on why, after wearing perfume to work for years was such a problem now. I think a coworker was doing some kind of power play thing.

Thanks for that Kanuka! Ik loved La vie devant soi. It was the first Signoret I Saw performance and is probably one of her best. The book is a gem and was incidentally the one that delivered Gary’s second Prix Goncourt.

I’m in 11 out of 10 for sought after – Shalimar Ode a Vanille, from a generous swapmeet decant. It is lovely. For all those who have been seeking it, consider trying the vintage cologne which is easy to find, and while not exactly the same (less floral, perhaps?), still ticks many of the same boxes to me.

This perfume is an 11 for me, not just because of the scent itself but also because I first tried it in Munich and I had such a great time on that vacation. I didn’t buy a bottle until I was at a conference in Denver, which was another fabulous trip.

Another sample from Jacques Fath today, Lilas Exquise… I sprayed lightly because I had to train an incoming Radiologist on the dictation system, which meant being in the same room, and I wanted to be careful. This is a very pretty lilac, sprayed lightly, and it still exists close to my skin after 8 hours! I posted late yesterday that my heater went in the fritz. I have a maintenance contract but skipped the maintenance in April / May because COVID and I had intended to set up time for the winter maintenance but time flew so here we are. Thank God it was not a fatal issue but still. I bought a personal heater and a room heater. So far I had opened the personal one and it worked fine for my needs. Had this gone on longer, I would have opened the larger one. That said, I actually found another portable heater so will read the instructions to see if I can go ahead and return the larger one.

For World Philosophy Day, I’m curious about your thoughts on the following:

A person got into a competitive school through nefarious means (sound familiar) but did 100% of the work and graduated with honors. After graduation, the whole scandal came to a head. Should the student’s degree count or should the school pull it back?

this is very similar to the (not real for the specific case, but probably real in many instances) case I used in a class for many years: The high school student body president, a good student and in line for a good college, under intense pressure, cheats on an AP paper, and get caught. Should the high school inform the college of the honor code violation? Interestingly enough, my students usually are pretty non forgiving. A hypothetical we use for discussion, not a real case.

Re. your case: This is tough. Because the record of work is there, but technically, the student stopped someone else to attend in their stead.

      Two things.
      1. Keep the degree. I agree with Merlin on community service and tutoring. Definitely needed for these most challenging times in schools and a smart, capable person who used their opportunity (no matter how they received it) can reach and relate to the high school or people studying for GEDs.

      2. Did you buy the Jasmine Leather?
I’m not sure if I should wait to see if Bergdorf’s is having the sale.

      Keeping you busy!

I think Merlin has the right idea about the degree conundrum. You can’t really put an asterisk after a degree, like some other achievements that happened via less than ethical means.

As to your question, I would say they should keep their degree since they did all the work in school. However, they should be required to provide a scholarship for a student who wouldn’t be able to attend the school otherwise.

Me too, although some are not longtime loves but new ones. I’ve been wearing a lot of L’Ambre des Merveilles lately, which is a new love, and Anne Klein II, an old love. Both very comforting!

This reminds me of a favourite:

‘when viewed with love, everything is beautiful’.

I have a bookmark hanging on my door with this and always thought it was Somerset Maugham. However, not finding it online I went to check AND I’v been misreading it for at least a decade! :D It’s actually a translation of a quote from Christian Morgenstern, a german author/poet.

Was referring to your Morrie quote above – but with regards to fragrance – yeah, almost all my scents are ‘comfort’ ones :D

Ditto on all my scents being comfort ones in some way.

Wearing vintage Shalimar edt today; definitely a 10+. It’s just getting to the very smoky dry down!

    Song of the day:
    https://youtu.be/EJGykmmBjP4

Today was another hospital run for me. This time, it was to pick up a friend who had cataract surgery. Her spouse wasn’t able to make it during the day, so I did. She was surprisingly lucid after the anesthesia and operation.

SOTD = Oriza L. Legrand Reve d’Ossian, from my newer sample. It is still recognizably the same perfume as my older sample. The floral notes are a little more prominent in this newer sample.

Nope. But I was also heavily bundled up… when I left my house, it was 35 degrees F, or 1.6 Celsius. Frosty! ?

My cousin was a huge fan. He used to make fun of me for “still” listening to Journey, lol.

Ugh. I don’t mind people sharing the music they like, but I draw the line at being ragged on for liking what I like.

My SOTD is Bottega Veneta and it is definitely an 11/10 for me. My car has been successfully towed to the body shop for assessment, we’ve moved and gotten mostly unpacked, and today my package of samples from Indigo arrived. Very much looking forward to getting into it!

Lots of wonderful scents and quotes today. Thanks, NSTers, I needed that. ❤️
I’m in House of Matriarch L’Arrivee, amber and resin and something vaguely syrupy. This one wears close to the skin, but I can still smell it after twelve hours. Wow!

Thursday’s SOTD was DSH’s Smudge Nebula, an “energy-clearing spritz” which I love. For today’s “11 out of 10”, I’m debating between Papillon’s Dryad or Bengale Rouge, or 4160 Tuesdays’ Clouds Illusion. I could also pull out Montale’s Intense Cafe, which is one of the few fragrances I’ve worn that a total stranger approached me to compliment. From 20+ feet away, at an outdoor garden center! And no, I wasn’t drenched in it.

In Carnal Flower. This was one of my early favorites and has stood the test of time and sillage. Definitely an 11 out of 10.

And as Chandler Burr wrote: “Carnal Flower is a blossom flower with the impact of a baseball bat.”

And what a lovely baseball bat it is.
