Wednesday scent of the day 10/21

Posted by Robin on 21 October 2020 236 Comments

Hump Day and National Apple Day. Birthdays today: Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Celia Cruz, Dizzy Gillespie and Ursula Le Guin. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Hermès Kelly Caleche.

Reminder: on 10/23, wear a floriental, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Robin, have you (or other commenters) tried Numi’s Aged Earl Grey?
Every Christmas I try to send my aunt Kusmi’s Earl Grey Intense, which is her very favorite, but it’s not always in stock. Wonder if this would be an acceptable substitute?
For myself, will give their breakfast blend a try. Today it’s Harney’s Hao-Ya “b.”❤

I have! In general, I like all of Numi’s teas, and this one is no exception. But even though I have drunk many teas, I am not familiar with the Kusmi line so can’t offer a direct comparison.
From Numi, I like that their flavored teas don’t contain extra natural flavorings. They do a really interesting, very sour lime one as well.
Hope this helps! (my favorite brand right now is Smith Teamaker, and Fortnum and Mason).

I hear you Koyel – my favorite is “Rose Pouchong” – also not to be had here.

Yes, I love the Aged Earl Grey…it has a really strong, non-fake bergamot flavor. Actually after I bought a bulk bag, I had to talk myself into drinking my other Earl Greys (including several variations by Kusmi).

My second favorite would be Fortnum & Mason — I like the Smoky Earl Grey and the Countess Grey.

Upton’s Extra Bergamot Earl Grey is also good, but does not come in giftable packaging, and once you taste the Numi really all the others just taste fake.

Well, I started doing that to keep autocorrect from autocorrecting the name to something else (and now my autocorrect has learned “Alahine” is a word and leaves it alone so I can’t even tell you what it used to try to correct it to). But I believe I read several years ago that there were some long-time NSTers who used to holler Alahiiiiiine! at each other – Mals86 may have been one of them, and perhaps whoever it was will chime in.

Commando for now. We’ve got a plumbing problem around here, and it makes it harder to wear perfume. I’ve been using a lot of lavender candles and perfume lately.

Robin, which version of Kelly Caleche are you wearing? (inquiring [enquring?] minds want to know)

Las Vegas seems to reinvent itself every 5 or 10 years. I had a layover there last year, and was amazed at how different The Strip looked from what I saw via the airport runways from my previous trip.

    Hello everyone!

I’m the world’s most grown-up fruity floral, Le Parfum de Therese. Unless I’m missing one…. I am not surprised how much I like it, though I am a bit surprised that I prefer vintage Diorella EdT. I wish I could go back in time and try Delrae’s Emotionelle side by side. Anyone got an old sample lying around? ?

I opened my hinoki yarn today! The strength of the smell surprised me a bit. It doesn’t hit you in the face from across the room but, if you hold it to your nose, it is definitely there. It almost had a creamy facet that’s missing in most hinoki accords. Can’t wait to cast on.

    Have a great day all!

I’m doing it freeform, top down. Even a 4 was too transparent. I’ve got over 200 stickers so far, luckily just knits so the way. It’s a gorgeous deep purple merino mohair.

I’m thinking a tee, since the yarn is mostly cotton. It will breathe beautiful. It’s the most beautiful birchwood color so I want to give it an interesting texture over color.

Here in Michigan I wear turtleneck sweaters for months in the winter. I have like three that I have started, and then put away when the weather warmed up and I had not finished them. I need to be more disciplined. I have a couple linen tees started also. I need to be more disciplined and finish some of the ones I have before I start new ones, I suppose. 🙂

Good Morning and happy Hump day! My SOTD is Knowing by Estee Lauder. One of my favorite floral/patchouli scents.
Come to think of it, I may do a week of chypre/florals – Aromatics Elixir (both Perfume and EDT – the EDT is less herbal and has more patchouli), Coriandre, Paloma Picasso, Niki de St Phalle, and Diorissimo are on the list…

Enjoying a French Press and munching on a Honey Crisp, my favorite variety of apple. In honor of apple day, I found this intriguing article about apples. 🙂

For the CP Twilly by Hermes..

I am going to use my scarf tying cards a generous NSTer sent to me to wear a fun scarf to match.

Waiting for a book to come to me today, someone, last year I think recommended Aristotle and Dante discover secrets of the universe. And my friend just dropped off two books, one is City of Girls the other is You should have known. My book pile is getting bigger..

Restored faith in humanity: A neighbor I have send me a message that she has bought my kids halloween candy, since halloween is cancelled this year, and she doesn’t feel comfortable coming to my place so she left a bag outside of her door. Inside, instead of the regular miniatures she bought my kids chocolate ghost lolly pops and bags of mini fun shaped candies, as if she went to a little speciality chocolate shop! Melted my heart!

What a lovely neighbour! We are having Halloween here, but lots of people are building candy slides / chutes to maintain social distancing. Sounds like a nice idea, but we don’t get that many kids who come into our little development — I think I’ll just go with the recommended tongs for distributing.

I’m wearing Incense Oud (by Kilian) today and have been wearing it more often to work lately. I was surprised to discover that rose is listed in the notes. I can’t say I’ve smelled rose when wearing it and I’m close to finishing a 50 mL bottle. But maybe that’s why I like it so much (I tend to enjoy incense/rose/light oud compositions). Alas, they have discontinued it.

They do. I like it too but sometimes it’s too syrupy of a rose and I find that a little goes a long way. So little that I still have my store sample from years back, about a third full ?

Since Fragrantica—rightly or wrongly—has classified Cuir Ottoman as floriental, I’m rolling with it. A few more PdE samples came in yesterday and I am loving them all: Azemour les Orangers, Ambre Russe, Wazamba.

From the older blue bottle. Yes to Hermes! 😀 It feels good to spend time with this old friend again. I should do a personal Hermes week. A little bottle of Twilly is calling my name.

Happy birthday to Ursula. She was my science fiction gateway author when I was a young reader. I started her Earthsea books and never finished. Maybe it’s time.

Wednesday has been my training day for the last couple of weeks and so it is today.

Knitting! I found an adorable sweater pattern based on RBG’s dissent collar- thinking I will make it in a nice dark sapphire blue cashmere/alpaca blend, and use ecru with little sparkly beads or a gold thread for the neckline contrast color, or maybe mohair to up the halo factor. 🙂

I’m in Cuir Ottoman today, after Merlin noticed yesterday that fragrantica classifies it as an oriental floral. I believe we both disagreed vehemently with that classification, but then I decided I should really put some on and see if I truly disagree. Yup, Cuir Ottoman is definitely a leather fragrance with floral flourishes. Since I now feel justified in setting my own definition of “floriental”, my world of CP-compliant fragrances has widened considerably (although I will probably still wear Alahine on Friday). 😀

Thunked another sample and doing the CP in a Guerlain flanker with a ridiculously long name – L’Instant de Guerlain Eau de Noel Iris Millesime. It’s from 2005, and I’m pretty sure no more bottles can be found. But that’s fine because it really just smells like many other Guerlains. A very pretty, easy perfume for the mid-week slump.

Wearing Dior Addict, which Fragrantica calls “oriental with floral notes.” I definitely don’t think floral, just vanilla, but ok.
Watched a really good movie on TCM called “A Woman in White” starring June Allyson. I think it’s a true story? It’s about a woman who wants to be a medical doctor late in the 1800s in NYC and the difficulties she faced from all sides. Girls today should watch it to see what professional women faced during women’s suffrage. The ambulance scenes in a horse drawn carriage are amazing.

I don’t get any floral from Addict. Just creamy vanilla. I think it’s perfect.

I’m wearing Noir Exquis, which Fragrantica classifies as an oriental vanilla, and craving a slice of this pie: apple green-chile with cheddar crust (NYT). Happy Humpday, everyone!

In Penhaligon’s Artemisia which Fragrantica calls an oriental. I agree more with someone commenting that it smells more like an aromatic Fougère. Or a powdery floral, or a woody something. Sure there is vanilla in it but I can’t get on board with it being an oriental

Yes, he is regarded as the most authoritative, right? It seems that he classifies it as a soft floral – since his site matches it to four other ‘soft florals’, further described as crisp, citrus, fruity. Cuir Ottoman is matched to ‘dry woods’, or ‘classical’. I can see how this site would be fun:

HA, I use that site all the time and just posted it this morning on today’s poll, but it used to be that it let you search by family and it doesn’t any more.

It is not just that he is most authoritative, but that for many years, he was the only one doing what he does: going around, smelling everything, classifying it by smell.

I was told he had trained others, but I don’t know if there are now other people doing this. He must be near retirement.

Black Orchid in perfume concentration (from a sample)

I think its softer (less loud) than the edp (i own and wear a lot in winter). It also feels darker, more earthy, lower pitch, a prominent booze/edible note?
I actually like it a lot! Perfect scent for autumn.

At the front desk of another company in our building, the receptionist has a beanie-baby-like Bactrian camel that she sets on her desk each Wednesday! Since COVID, I forgot that I used to go in and pet it and chat with her (I too am at the front desk in our office) so we sort of bonded. Go team for camel!

I’m wearing Amouage Honour Woman which Fragrantica lists in the Oriental Floral category. Any excuse to wear this beauty!

A link to this article turned up on a philosophy blog I read and I thought people on this list might find it as fascinating as I did.
Here is one little tidbit from it: “Our nose is tuned to detect blends of different chemicals—coffee aroma, for example, consists of 800 different compounds.”

Walk was good but I lament how much shorter it had to be before it started to get dark. I don’t even know if working 7:00-4:00 or thereabouts will give me enough daylight for long. Walking prior to work or during lunch is just not practical.

Sotd is Angel Muse. 8 sprays to last me through the night, and probably into the morning. I’ve been debating only keeping out a small rotation of perfume for the winter season. I got stuck on what the definition of small should be. For those that do this, how many do you keep out? And do you stick to the rotation?

I don’t rotate but my definition of small would be 20, at least 5 of which should be no-brainers.
