Friday scent of the day 10/9

Posted by Robin on 9 October 2020 224 Comments

Happy Beatlemania Friday / John Lennon's birthday! Our community project for today: name your favorite Beatles or John Lennon song, and wear the perfume to match.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

It's not really my favorite Beatles song, but I'm Only Sleeping is the perfect pandemic song, and I'm pairing it with Aftelier Ancient Resins.

Reminder: on 10/16 we're going back to the beginning...revisit a fragrance you tried in your early days as a perfumista. Suggested by springpansy.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

An acoustic rehearsal version of I'm Only Sleeping.

Robin, I almost chose I’m only sleeping today! Almost twins! I love this song too. :)

Anyway, my pick is Woman by John Lennon. I considered wearing OJ Woman, but eventually decided that something softer and dreamier is called for. So I am wearing SL Clair de Musc.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zF6e-NmwmnA

Bonus track: Silly Love Songs by Paul McCartney & Wings
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wh15LOppcWQ
Reportedly ““Silly Love Songs” was written as a rebuttal to music critics, as well as former Beatle and friend, John Lennon, accusing Paul McCartney of writing lightweight love songs.” (from the-paulmccartney-project.com)
Come on, John, you wrote Love, you could write sentimental love stuff too!

*”you wrote Love”- I meant “you wrote Woman” (although I think Real Love qualifies too).

    Hello all!

I’m a bit literal today for the poll, but I chose Mojito Chypre for Strawberry Fields Forever. Zingy strawberry and mint over a slightly woody base. Great fun!

    Stay safe everyone.

SOTD = Amber Oud by Killian, a lovely simple amber and vanilla fragrance, once of the first scents I encountered after I fell down the rabbit hole of fragrance. If I really truly had to have only one perfume, if I really get down to it, all I would need is this perfume. So, in my head, the Beatles song that goes with this scent is All You Need Is Love….

Following along with the aftermath of the arrest of the domestic terrorists near my house, we all need to put more love into the world, we need to think love, feel love, breathe love, to counteract the hate that seems to seep into everything when no one is watching. What a world we live in now…

I’m in Dune, because it’s going to be sunny and may get all the way to 80 today!? I’m going with In My Life, because I woke up with it in my head and despite the sun we’ve had all week, the shorter days and turning leaves having me feeling quite melancholy as the fall days always do. Dune makes me feel melancholy sometimes too because it takes me back to the early ‘90’s and my college town that I loved so.?

Got a spray of Bitter Peach at the store (second time I tried it) and I really love it. Wonderful how tastes differ…. I smell a lovely boozy peach with spices and a bitter pit. I wouldn’t mind if Tom sent a bottle to me for an early Christmas gift ?

    SotD = Apres L’ondee
    ?? = In My Life
the mood = pensive and wistful

    There are places I’ll remember
All my life, though some have changed
    Some forever, not for better
Some have gone, and some remain

All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends, I still can recall
Some are dead, and some are living
In my life, I’ve loved them all

When the Beatles CP was first mentioned, this is the pairing that immediately came to my mind.

I love the scent and the song, and can enjoy them both over and over again in a single day without getting worn out by them.

Music and perfume, both are balm for the head and heart. ???

Myrrhiad (cool, sweet, contemplative myrrh) by Pierre Guillaume for Let It Be. I’ve always thought it was a beautiful song, but really loved it after watching the movie Yesterday (highly recommended, BTW, for a fun watch with some great music). I first thought it was a John Lennon song, but of course it’s not (duh, religious references). In fact he hated it! Happy Friday, all!

Deciding on a favorite Beatles song is impossible. I am not a HUGE fan, but they are part of the sound track of my youngest years. Their songs are in the warp and weft of my earliest memories, like bannisters and door knobs at head height.

    For today:

And anytime you feel the pain, hey Jude, refrain
Don’t carry the world upon your shoulders
For well you know that it’s a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder.

Trying to warm up the world in Laudano Nero!

I can see that. . . but then again I loved showing my son a life-sized recording of that set at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame–and seeing him walk away slack-mouthed. Its like a painting by a great master, preserved for everyone on Youtube. And we knew them when. . .

As a French horn player, I’m going to have to go with For No One for one of my favorite instances of horn in popular music. I don’t think my small collection contains anything sad enough to match the song, but I’m in Bottega Veneta because it’s one of my favorites and I find it cozy for overcast days like today.

Never was a big fan of the Beatles. There, I said it. I am currently filling up my Amazon cart for a Prime Pantry order and will be giving Prime Day a pass this year. With the dog going to the vet soon and filling his meds, groceries have to take precedence. Wearing the current Miss Dior original edt.

I was never much into John Lennon’s music and have only an AM radio familiarity with the Beatles generally (I know, I know …). I’m in Italian Leather today because I wanted to be, and have now decided it’s that rare thing, a leather fragrance that’s really more suited to spring than fall. And cannot think of one single Beatles/Lennon song to pair with it, so I’ve utterly failed the CP today, I’m afraid.

Diptyque Tempo today. I think I like this one so much that it goes to the top of the list for next perfume buy (who know when that would be). I used to not like patchouli, but lately I have come around to it and Tempo is one I enjoy immensely.

I’ve just read Kevin’s review. I own Coromandel (don”t think about it as a patchouli focused perfume, very well blended that is not a soliflore) but never thought of it while I was wearing Tempo. Now I can kind of see a small relation, but Tempo is more patchouli driven and I love the mate tea addition. I kind of think of Zegna’s Javanese Patchouli, I’ll have to dig up my sample to see if they’re alike. I think Zegna is the first patchouli focused perfume that I really liked. It took me years to come around to patchouli.

I have a soft spot for Here Comes the Sun. However, I would have to pair it with Dzintars Leila, which I wore at that time and which is sadly my only early perfume love that I have been unable to snag on ebay.

Dzintars is a Latvian company; at the time, I only knew the fragrance was from the USSR. An eclectic gift shop near my college campus that sold it.

I’ve been watching ebay for it. There seem to always be a lot of other vintage Dzintars perfumes on auction but I’ve only seen this one once — and that was a completed auction two weeks after it sold!

Although that was frustrating, I was at least able to confirm the name and learn the brand by seeing the bottle. I was beginning to doubt my memory.

It must have been either been very rare, or so loved that those who bought it used every precious drop.

    SOTD = Roja Dove Britannia

From a decant. I’m with the CP in a surprisingly reflexive manner: I have more Roja Dove perfumes (decants) as well as more Beatles / John Lennon song loves than I originally thought so I decided to celebrate their British roots. I was originally going to pick Woman as the favorite song and wear a perfume with the word Woman in it but that did not feel right.

I will, once again, attempt a closet clean out. I have many suits that I don’t wear anymore and even if I end up having to wear a suit, I would probably shop for a more contemporary style – I haven’t had a need for a more formal office wear that I don’t even know what suit styles are “in”!

I grew up with the Beatles and loved them from the very beginning. John and Paul were my equal favorites – John when I was in an introspective, intellectual mood and Paul when I was my usual teenage self loving his cute boyishness.

I have no one favorite song but one that spoke to me as soon as I saw today’s cp, perhaps because of our troubled times and the impact that yoga and meditation has had on keeping me calm these days, is the same as Robin’s choice yesterday. ‘Imagine’ my surprise when late last night I read yesterday’s SOTD post and saw her choice and the interesting commentary and videos that followed. What the lyrics say to me is to put aside, not necessarily negate, our cultural and religious differences and embrace our common humanity that supersedes these differences. I’ve paired it with Pacifica Tibetan Mountain Temple, the scent that says ‘peace’ to me.

Like Robin, I also viewed numerous videos but prefer the purist approach to this song – I just want John. https://youtu.be/YkgkThdzX-8

This week’s words of wisdom from my yoga teacher: Let this be the day you find the peace in letting go and the power in holding on. Just . . . Imagine. ?

That is what the lyrics say to me too, in fact I think of that as the John Lennon message to the world in general, whether or not it is really what he meant to say. He has been adopted by the world as a message of peace.

Now that it’s faded, I’ll add in Jour Ensolleille for Good Day, Sunshine.

As others have noted, the new Cormoran Strike book has many scent references. I chuckled at the bit about Frederic Malle. But, I really laughed at the comment on Chanel Chance Eau Fraiche. “The only message it conveyed to bystanders was ‘I have washed.’” I have no idea if that is an accurate review.

        Well, since you asked….ha ha
        FICTION
Laura Beatty, Lost Property – an English writer takes a year off to travel Europe by camper van. As she passes through varius towns on her way to Greece she stops at historical sites etc. and often meets the historical figures from those places (as living people). Some of these historic figures travel with her for a while , e.g. Joan of Arc. So the whole book is a kind of travel, time travel , historical, cultural , social comment but lively and imaginative (and an easy read).
        2. Tara June Winch, The Yield
This is great. The author is an indigenous Australian and on the surface it is about a woman returning to Australia following the death of a relative. But really it is about language, specifically the language of the Wiradjuri people, and colonisation. Wonderful writing. I think it won the Australian fiction prize etc.
        NON FICTION
My recent discovery is Vivian Gornick, who is well-known to USA readers (New Yorker) etc. Two books
        1. Unfinished Business – about the joy of re-reading linked in with episodes from her life
        2. Approaching Eye Level – essays.
Quite feisty . I love that she talks to strangers – because I always talk to strangers.
        POETRY
Claudia Rankine, Just Us…from her trilogy ‘American Lyric’ This is a kind of twin text: poetry and then background notes/ sources/ commentary. Contemporary. She taught a ‘Construction of Whiteness’ class at Yale. I expect she is well-known in USA but not to me.

That will do. Maybe nonfiction and NZ tomorrow

Never heard of Godwits– and what a wonderful name! Was looking it up its origins and learned (from wikipedia) that “Godwits were once a popular British dish. Sir Thomas Browne writing in about 1682 noted that godwits “were accounted the daintiest dish in England.””

I’ve just finished my first week in my new job and it was actually rather pleasant. I haven’t felt so inspired at work in a looooooong time.
The amount of things I will have to learn is huge and I have a lot of new skills to acquire but it al seems more of a challenge than a burden. Neither my favorite song nor the perfume I’m wearing today, but if my brain had been less fuzzy this morning I’ve had gone with Instant Karma (song) and Breath of God.

I am in fact wearing Tiempe Passate and may finish my travel spray by year’s end. I guess the logical song choice for this one would be In My Life, BUT I will go instead with Norwegian Wood, which I think better fits the character of this fragrance. (And my all-time fave Beatles song is Something. Team George.)

Late to the party! Very busy day. I was commando the whole day. Just now sprayed on one arm Zoologist Camel and on the other arm Rhinoceros. Rhinoceros is a NO-NO! Camel is ok. Both samples go the good- bye pile. I will spray on some Saffran Troublant for comfort later.
    Happy Friday! ?

I’ve noticed that the Zoologist samples I have tried start off as loud scents but drop off quickly to skin scents. Does that happen with you too?

Yes, they start pretty loud and do not last on my skin much. After 2 hours they are gone.

I don’t have a single favorite Beatles song. There are several that I consider my favorites, though, and this is part of that group:

And here is my favorite John Lennon song, although this is a cover:

SOTD = Reminiscence Patchouli, to go with the Beatles song. ✌

I will copy Robin – today is a tough day and I need all that magic that Mandy conjures.
Favorite Beatles song is too difficult. Probably 2 from each year would work – but I don’t often listen to them oddly. Maybe I don’t want to feel old?
Happy ‘Lucy in the Sky’ to all of you. KooKookachew.

You nailed it – our conductor has asked himself that same question. Well, there are conducting tracks for larger choirs – so when I record, I actually watch a video of my conductor that plays in time with the audio track that I hear.

Superlate to the 2020 NST Beatlemania party…
    SOTD!Jean Patou Sira des Indes…
    Song,uhmmm….Yellow Submarine?
Sira des Indes was on my Sale list a couple of years back, and she came home with me,unloved by others as well.
SO HAPPY ABOUT THAT!!We found each other today!
Ten hours in I am still on a yellow submarine, having a Spring party under the sea.
Notes listed include Banana and Champaca flower,I get an ylang-ylang vibe, which is not listed. The far drydown that I am currently smelling is worth the wait,I get flashbacks from Malle’s Iris Poudre’s drydown.Definitely not identical, more shared DNA.
    LOVE.
    Happy Weekend!
    What.a.week!!!
    XO

I cannot pick a favourite of either the Beatles or Lennon so I chose “Whatever gets you through the night” because it’s just so much fun! That SNL-esque sax intro, Elton John singing backup vocals and playing piano, this song was inspired by “Rock your baby” by George McCrae. I’m wearing Ginger Picante because it’s been getting me through just about everything lately, both days and nights!

I’m sure most of us know the version that was released but have a listen to this and you will hear the influence of the song that inspired it!

Was not a Beatles fan and in particular disliked John for his intellectual pretentiousness. What did I know? I was much more into Motown, Marvin Gaye in particular. Growing up within radio range of the Detroit station CKLW that was our daily fare. I do appreciate the sad beauty of “Eleanor Rigby” but am feeling blue enough on this gray gloomy (hurricane adjacent) day that I did not want to put on a perfume to coordinate. Take care everyone! I’m wearing heavy sprays of my very heavy French perfume Les Ecuadors Patchouli.

Too many favorite Lennon songs to pick just one! The first song I ever sang as a toddler was “She Loves You”. But yesterday I wore Penhaligon’s Blasted Bloom, so I’ll go with “A Day In The Life”, which ends with a blast of a piano chord.
