Thursday scent of the day 8/6

Posted by Robin on 6 August 2020 224 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy Root Beer Float Day! Today is also the 55th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. Birthdays today: Andy Warhol, M. Night Shyamalan, Lucille Ball, Alfred, Lord Tennyson. What fragrance are you wearing?

My song today is Dolly Parton doing the American folk ballad Silver Dagger. (Many artists have covered this song; here's a link to a Joan Baez version.) My (lame, metal weapon related) pairing is with DS & Durga HYLNDS Bitter Rose, Broken Spear, which turns out to be perfect for this rainy morning.

Reminder: 8/7 we're doing Playlist Friday, again...name a favorite song, and wear a perfume that fits the song. (We did this project twice in 2017.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Dolly Parton singing Silver Dagger (apologies if there is an ad first, I had trouble finding a video without one.)

And the bonus track, Dolly singing Seven Bridges Road.

Scent: Bvlgari Eau Parfumee au The Bleu
Song: Qual nave smarrita (Like a lost ship), composed by Handel, performed by Lorraine Hunt Lieberson and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra under Nicholas McGegan
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pgoh8_YE5nI

This song makes think of a vast blue ocean, which fits the blue theme of the scent. Besides, I get the feeling of light, air and melancholy, sadness at the same time, from both the perfume and the song.

And by the way, I was glad to find fans of Satie on Tuesday, even though I did not comment much on that day.

I am so behind, I am going to have to sit down this weekend and listen to everybody’s music. I did enjoy the Satie piece though, that is one of the few I have heard so far.

Her voice is very expressive. Somehow she manages to convey deep emotions in a subtle way.

I’m wearing Guerlain AA Pamplelune, for the first time this year. I always forget how strong it is on my skin. I’m still a little under the weather, and the almost sweaty note on my already sweaty skin is a little too overpowering. I may try to rinse some of it off. I generally really enjoy this fragrance, but I think that I am going to stick to some lighter scents until I feel better.

I can see how it would be a little overwhelming when recuperating from a sinus infection. I do love it, too – my cherished decant lives in the fridge.
I hope you are back to 100% soon!

    Hi all!

Fell asleep super early last night, so I’m up super early today. Working on buying a car so have been digging through my stack of Important Papers.

Wearing Hiris and pairing that with Mary Lattimore’s “Baltic Birch,” lovely contemporary harp.

Ostara. Which is, to me, a very damp and dewy scent. A morning scent. So I’ll pair it with one of my absolute favorite music pieces. A desert island piece, if you will. The Lark Ascending, performed by Hilary Hahn. I saw her perform this with NY Philharmonic and felt my chest pulling me forward.

I’m (probably briefly) in Aftelier Lumiere this morning. I sprayed a bit more this time, and it has much more lily than a single spritz revealed. Lily is not my thing, usually, but it’s actually not bad at all in Lumiere. Song pairing for it sprang into my head shortly after spraying – The Cowsills singing about the flower girl: https://youtu.be/Bl61-KMQAnE. Enjoy. 😉

As expected, the Aftelier was rather short-lived, and I have now reverted to my jazz station and a healthy spritzing of Feu Secret — gaaahhh, how I love the combination of iris and incense in this. It’s also a bit chilly here today, so I added a cashmere pullover to my usual ensemble, and I’m feeling pretty darn elegant. 🙂

In St. Clair Scents Song of Aubrac. LOOOOOVE. Woke up feeling grumpy and this perfume kicked that right out the door.

Musical pairing: I adored this version of the Mozart Violin Sonata #5 “Spring” in Allegro that was performed on a Japanese anime called Nodame Cantabile. It’s Mozart’s “Spring” as it might be rearranged by a rock violinist – delicacy and precision replaced by sheer exuberance.

If you’re a stickler for violin technique you may find it appalling, but as for me I loved it’s messy, undeniable vibrancy, more suggestive of spring to me than the original!

I’m in Cuir Pleine Fleur– and probably sparked by Robin’s reference to Joan Baez, I think the matching music is Love Is Just a Four Letter Word (written by Dylan). I love Dolly’s version of Silver Dagger!

In other news, my hubby is with my son today at the hospital. Usually I take him to everything, but this time I just felt so sad and tired about everything, my husband offered and I accepted. Surgery will take a little over an hour, and he should be home this afternoon. My son was so smiley this morning. He said he was fine. Ach! Kids. Unbelievable.

Hey guys been a while since I have posted. I lost my cat of 13 yrs last week. It was very sad.

    2020 just really isn’t a good year.

I haven’t been into perfume much at all..I have lost interest in several things. Just kinda blah about everything and all I am wanting to do is watch movies for distraction.
But then I feel bad for distracting myself too much with it, lol.

The last perfume I wore was Vetiverio(sp) edp by Diptyque. Which is bitter in the beginning but dries down nice. Blah blah blah..? just not interested in a damn thing right now.

    Hugs to you guys

It’s fine to just not care about a damn thing right now, 2020 is all weirdness all the time. If movies distract you, go for it and don’t feel guilty about it, times are tough enough without guilt. Hugs!

I started the morning in ISM, wondering what it would do on my walk in the heat. It was very faint, but reappeared when I got back inside. I so love this rooty, carrotty thing.

    Wore MFK CPLS yesterday morning.

It’s my parents anniversary today. They would have been married 60 years. ❀

I can’t think which MFK that is! It’s sad to have these small reminders of losses. My parents were lucky to celebrate their 60th but then my father died two weeks later.

Cologne Pour le Soir. It’s so comforting and easy to wear.
Yes, these little reminders of loss are bittersweet, but getting more sweet over time, for me at least.
My mom was right when she used the phrase “tincture of time”. I can’t count the number of times I’ve leaned on that phrase in the last ten years.

Hey She-ra, I meant to answer your question re: vanilla in TF Lost Cherry. Lost Cherry is mostly the cherry pastry smell. Lavender Extreme, OTOH, is a vanilla number.

I just got a sample of L’AP Couleur Vanille and it is sweet, salty, incensy and musky vanilla ?

        Thank you for this intel!

The Lost Cherry travel spray is awfully cute and drew my eye. 😉 I will seek out a sample of the Lavender Extreme…didn’t realize it had vanilla. Maybe you’ve tried them but SS Lavender Vanilla is a very good straight-up lavender vanilla and Estate Lavender is a spicy more complex lavender vanilla also quite nice. And the Couleur Vanille is on my sample list too! 🙂

    Great Perfume choice Robin!
Ok, I am craving me some Linda Rondstat.
Pairing: “Faithless Love” with Love & Tears: By Kilian.
    https://youtu.be/UMUw67bNQ8Q
She has an older album out with Dolly Parton & Emmy Lou Harris and was a true devotee of Joan Baez. Your choice of an Eagles song really ties it all together as she is responsible for forming that group when she was selecting her back up band members years ago.

Linda’s rendition of Desperado is stunning. An amazing talent. There are a couple of artists that make me happy I lived at an age where I could appreciate them. Linda is one. Hayley Mills is another. I still treasure seeing Linda in concert with The Eagles and Loggins & Messina. What a lineup that was!

I was a raised in a hymn singing household, so even though there is a lot of cultural baggage, I enjoy singing old time gospel songs.

I got nuthin’ today. Barely have one eye open, but that eye is eyeballing Bvlgari Omnia for the late, late Thursday win.

Not the greatest contribution to the comment section, but maybe a bit better than my original “ugh!” which is what I uttered when I tried to get out of bed and my back reminded me in a very unkind fashion that it has total control on how my day/night will go…

    Song of the day:

Not at all related to my perfume wants or whims today. Just felt like I wanted to hear that song.

SOTD = L’Artisan Passage d’Enfer, from the sample stash. I got a bit of #2 pencil shavings in with the lilies today.

I always loved the Ike and Tina version of that song best. I think I had that album. “We’re gonna start it nice and easy…”. My favorite Creedence was always Lodi, which we would sing when crossing the CA Delta and stuck behind cars because one of the various drawbridges was up.

You’re welcome! BTW, I thought I recently heard that Tina Turner is busy with some new music. She just does NOT age!

Nope. She doesn’t. She could be 85 and I’d still want her legs.

What’s great is that both versions are so good. They each do their own thing. I can’t say I like one more than the other, it depends on my mood.

I like both versions, too, but have a soft spot for the CCR version.

Thanks, Robin, for Dolly; she’s the real deal, IMHO – but you don’t have to just be rich and in showbiz to be a HUGE success (IMHO). I love to hear her sing Coat of Many Colors. Re: CP I love hearing everyone’s songs, but I just don’t think I can make a connection. Does anyone have a perfume that would go with CCR Lookin’ Out My Backdoor? :). SOTD is Ibiza Hippie. It lasts, it stays interesting, and it is very different from anything else I have. TMI, I got IH while first falling, falling down the Rabbit Hole because it seemed to have some sort of cult status and one payday weekend, there was a nearby seller on Ebay at a decent cost……anyhoo, happy Thursday, all.

And I should have mentioned the Dolly Parton’s America podcast from 2019 above….really interesting.

LOVE that CCR song. Anything rollicking and happy would work. Byredo Pulp? Really, wouldn’t Ibiza Hippie work?

I enjoyed that podcast way more than I expected to. I was barely a Dolly fan before listening to it, but now I have so much respect and admiration for her, as a singer and as a person.

The song is better than IH, much as I like IH – but maybe that is one way for a pairing to work!

Robin, I meant to mention your scent…Bitter Rose, Broken Spear is a fascinating one I think. That metallic thing isn’t something I’d normally like but it’s really good in this one. You smell great.

And I love your Dolly songs. Thanks for posting.

Root Beer Float Day…it’s my experience that Americans are the only people who like root beer. The rest of the world doesn’t get the joy of a float in a frosted glass in August.

One of the best things I had to eat/drink in Las Vegas back in the early 2010’s was a root beer float! It really hit the spot in that dry desert air.

Dolly is a treasure! Her remedy for a tired throat and scratchy voice is to eat a few potato chips. It works!

I grew up drinking root beer floats at the A&W drive-in restaurant near my childhood home, a house which did not have air conditioning. It was so deliciously cooling to drink from those frosty mugs!

Late today, it’s been a busy one. Wearing Zoologist Bee and pairing it with The Lovin Spoonful Daydream. I thought of the song as soon as I put perfume on this morning ( Bee is still going strong almost 12 hours later) and I’ve had an earworm all day.
