Monday scent of the day 7/27

Posted by Robin on 27 July 2020 303 Comments

Late again, and Monday again! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Versace Versense.

Reminder: on 7/31, we're doing best of summer...wear the perfume you're reaching for the most this summer. (If it's winter where you are, wear the perfume you're reaching for the most this winter.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Versense is so green and fresh! And you matched the pic perfectly, Robin.

    I am in Mugler Cologne.

    Ciao a tutti (hello everyone)

I am in Shalimar lotion (of course) I only waited a forever to receive it.
It came with the EDP that was also on sale (enabler pin goes to someone on NST) I think Shalimar can go on my best of summer list. I will spray enough of the EdP when I go out to make sure people keep their distance ;)

Tomorrow it will be Songes, my other great love.

Sipping French press coffee, yogurt with fresh figs, apricots and Italian plums for breakfast drizzled with honey. Stay cool everyone.

Forgive me, Donnatella for I have sinned. I bought the BBW Country Apple spray mist. It was $5, and that is free in perfumeland. Woke up in vintage Shalimar extrait. Will be wearing Kyoto at work then Theorema for tonight. We have storms that will be rolling through this afternoon and hopefully the power doesn’t go out.

Dear Dawn, we woke up the same. I put a few drops of the parfum last night before bed and woke up to it still going strong. Its potent stuff. But I had the most peaceful sleep.

I have some errands to run, which I don’t want to do. Trying to avoid both the heat and covid is just wearing me out! ?

At my MD appointment, I was in the lab section getting bloodwork drawn and in walks a guy with his mask on his bald head. I really had to bite my tongue to keep from explaining the US situation to him, and thank him for his contribution of potentially pathogen filled exhalations. People just blow my freakin’ mind. ?

You see those signs in all buses and trains here in NY. Still people don’t pay attention to it. I took a bus late this morning to run a quick errand and I was shocked to see people not wearing masks or wearing them the wrong way. Unfortunately, that attitude will never change.

People are blowing my mind with this whole mask thing. I hate wearing a mask. We have a mandate in Ohio. People are screaming about HIPAA and the disability laws but they don’t apply to mask wearing. Besides, I don’t want to spread Covid nor get it.

We have a mask mandate in Oregon right now, and I have found that my PTSD is triggered by wearing one. My solution is to wear one around my neck and pull it up when I’m near others. It’s a bit distressing, but not nearly as bad as wearing it constantly. So, that is my compromise with my “disability.”

I have some, and yes, they are better (not perfect) for me. Unfortunately, I’m not convinced they do as much good–for me or for the people around me. I wear one when I need an extended “face covering” and keep the mask for incidental interactions.

        • cazaubon says:
          27 July 2020 at 2:55 pm

I don’t have PTSD, but I do have anxiety and claustrophobia and the mask triggers me too. You have my sympathies.

I find that running just a few errands in a day tires me out, partly from the stress, I’m sure. I needed to get blood drawn at a lab today, too, but at least the patients that I saw in the medical center were all wearing masks properly. I was there last Thursday, too, for a mammogram, the first time I’d been there in a long time. The medical center seems much better controlled about compliance to Pennsylvania’s pandemic laws than the grocery stores around here are.

I’m in Chanel 19 vintage EDC for a very hot (for Seattle) day that’s going to reach about 90. Still gorgeous, but I better get out for a walk soon.

Back at work after another week long furlough which I thoroughly enjoyed. I don’t want to make light of it because I know the furloughs are difficult for many. But I always love time off — let’s just say I think I’ll be very good at retirement. :D

After my shower I will put on some Guerlain AA Nerolia Bianca which was sent to me by a generous NSTer. She sent VCA’s Neroli too but I actually prefer the Guerlain which is nice because it’s cheap as chips, as they say, on the discount sites.

Now is even more affordable to get it, because it comes in 50ml. The bottle and juice looks different than the original 100ml, which is not sold anymore. I hope there was no reformulation involved.

Yes, this is what keeps me from baking more often. I would happily make a cake every 4 days or so, if I could readily share 3/4 of it with others!

Can you believe our entire floor of 5 apts (including ours) has stayed through the past 4 months? Like you, many in our building left the city and even 20 apartments are now officially vacant, which is a lot.

            Good idea on freezing!

I made a 9 x 13 pan of blackberry crumble the other day. I gave more than half away to neighbors and a friend. I just made it big on purpose so I could share. Blackberries were on sale. I turned out yummy!

Cornmeal cakes are really yummy. I love the subtle crunch from the cornmeal. Blueberries are also good with cornmeal and lemon.

Like others, I’ve been scaling my cake and cookie recipes down by half, and freezing cookie dough, which helps….a little bit.

I’m on Annick Goutal’s mailing list & had one from them the other day saying they are closing their online store in the US. Made me wonder if they’re pulling out of the US altogether, so would be interested to hear from anyone that has any info about that possibility. When my husband & I were visiting our friends near The Woodlands, Texas in 1997 (my husband’s first visit to them, I met Kathy during a business trip in 1993 – we worked for the same company, she in their Houston office, me in their Aberdeen, Scotland location – we spoke almost daily on business related subjects – this was before email! – & got on very well so we were both delighted when we hit it off in person too, & our friendship endures to this day) we had a few days on our own visiting Dallas, Austin & San Antonio. Whilst in Dallas of course I had to go to the original Neiman Marcus store, & AG had just launched in the US, so there was a promotion where if you bought a bottle you were able to choose a second one for half price, though the half price one was only available in a very limited selection of their fragrances. I had already been wearing Eau de Camille (much loved, much missed) for some time, so naturally I bought another bottle, then chose Eau d’Hadrien for my half price one. I seem to remember AG was only available in NM, Saks, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Bergdorf Goodman & possibly Barneys, so depending on where I was in the US on various trips it wasn’t always possible to make a purchase, to my unending disappointment!

Such sad news! Such a classy brand run by classy, French women and men. Every time I visited, whether UEW or the west village where they had another store, I was the only customer. I never saw anyone else shopping and I sometimes wondered if they were going to last in NYC.

I am sad to report my big, red dog is no more. We rescued each other in 2007 and this lovely chow/shepherd/lab mix was a constant and loyal companion to every member of my family and our small pack of rescues. Sheba died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday under her favorite Bonsai bench, a cool and sheltering spot. I am still walking out in the backyard and talking to that place where she so often was, and crying and hoping to feel one more brush of her curly tail and a nudge from a wet nose. We are bereft. No perfume for me today.

SOTM is vintage No. 19 (green juice, not yellow), after all the comments about it over the weekend!

In about half an hour, I have an appointment at the cemetery down the road. Gonna find out if there’s a cremains plot for Mr. Spicebomb and myself for when we need them 60 years from now. ;)

We live practically next to one of the two oldest cemeteries in Portland, and I love it there–huge, old trees, proper old grave markers, a few mausoleums with stained glass. It’s an amazing, magical place. I was very excited to learn they have a little memorial garden in the center that’s still available for purchase.

And it’s the sort of business I like to have done and decided.

Thanks. Yes, I know it’s sorta uncommon to be deciding these things when there’s no particular concern. However, I have seen how life can throw us challenges at any time, and it is not fun to try to glean a loved-one’s wishes after they are gone. I mean for it to be a gift for someone who loves me sometime in the future.

Thanks. I’m definitely in the “always be prepared” camp. Mr. Spicebomb and I are also looking into having the house earthquake retrofitted so we’d qualify for earthquake insurance. I guess we’re both in the “sh*t happens, so plan ahead for it” mindset these days! Can’t imagine why. ?

I’m with you in the “hope for the best but prepare for the worst” attitude. However, after I kick it, I hope I keel over where a bear or some other wild animals can make good use of me. I’ve takes a lot from the earth in 55 years, so I’d feel better giving back. Just like the ending Brad Pitt has in Legends of the Fall, which is the movie rendition of a short story by the same name by one of my favorite writer/poets Jim Harrison.

I’d be with you, except I want a small stone somewhere with my name on it, so people who miss me have a place to go. I’ve lost two immediate family members, and there’s no official memorial for either of them. It saddens me to not have those spots for them.

But if the stone was there and the rest of me was passing my energy and matter on to a bear, I’d be cool with that!

After this weekend’s questions, I finally caved and bought a bottle of Infusion d’Iris Absolue off ebay. Life is short, right? SOTD is many sprays of Mandarine Basilic for the 100F temps coming later today. Yesterday it was 105 on my patio.

    Hello all!

    1) SOTD is Cap Neroli- this is my premiere summer scent. I have gone through two 1 ounce bottles of this and will need to order a third very soon.

    2) The old town is HOT. The temps are high and tempers are even higher.
    3) The garden has enter the very wild and lush portion of the summer. I did a pull out of the old pea plants, stuck in a new tomato plant from a neighbor, tied up the berries canes that were getting out of hand, discovered a nest of kittens that were somehow well hidden in a my tiny yard (don’t worry- they were cleaned up, given shots and are being lovingly cared for by adoptive families) and have been eating loads of green beans, squash, and herbal salads for days and days and days. I like this part of the year, and wish I could go to Hood River or the beach and hang out with friends.

Yeah- so much at Lincoln City, Cannon Beach et al is not open, or are open with social distancing with no bathrooms. Condos at the beach I would not be sure are disinfected enough.

My mom is in Lincoln City, and we could use her place for a pit stop, as long as we have the time to add in some extra chatting time with her.

They were so sweet- defensive at first but turned into fluffballs really quickly! I let things grow for a bit and the mother cat apparently decided it was cool, shaded place to be (by the volunteer raspberry canes and under the shade of neighbors’ grape vines) . So they were cozy & comfortable there. There mother cat did come back looking for the kittens but saw me and ran off. I wish I was able to catch her so she could be spayed.

She’ll come back again. See if you can bait a cage from animal control or a rescue group in your area. I can imaging how devastated she’ll be. If you can catch her, then the kittens can be with her until ready for adoption, while still nursing, not to mention getting mom cat adequate nutrition.

SOTD = Parfums d’Empire Azemour Les Orangers

There’s a lot going on with this one and I am not one to parse the everything but the kitchen sink notes so I will just say vintagey fresh❣️

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CDJm_2ihykt/?igshid=1jyx3ets2cquy

I got this meme where you’re supposed to figure out how to get to 6 using any math operator:
    2 + 2 + 2 = 6
    3 3 3 = 6
    4 4 4 = 6
    5 5 5 = 6
    6 6 6 = 6
    7 7 7 = 6
    8 8 8 = 6
    9 9 9 = 6

If you were able to figure out 1, you’re a kindergarten graduate, 3 High School, 5 University, all PhD. Some have more than 1 way to get to 6.

For most of us in the U.S., we may as well rename it Hotlandia. The next 2 days will be scorchers, including the dreaded high dew point.

Apparently a number of the people on Dad’s side of the family have trouble with right and left. I tend to say “this way” or “that way” and point. If I’m a passenger in a car and do that, it’s annoying for the driver. If I’m not in a car and get a few minutes to think about it, I can figure it out. :)

I’m in a couple of dabs of Hyrax. Not at all a summer go to, so we can subtract two points from my weekly total. ?
This started out with a puff of smoke! Did anyone else get smoke?? Didn’t last long. It would be better in winter, but it was fine on the morning walk. It’s been almost cool here, and breezy, so Hyrax didn’t suffocate me. It’s musky, spicy with a bit of booze. Maybe it gets more aggressive when it’s sprayed…I like it.

Jasmine et Cigarette was straight ashtray on me, NOT smoke. I now know the difference.

I am totally off CP testing a couple of patchoulis (Nicolai and L’Artisan).

    “Nothing about us, without us!”

A shout out to people with disabilities as its the 30th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Equality and justice are a process of course, but the passage of the ADA was a remarkable step indeed.

I wouldn’t have wanted to be out in the yard, and you live only a few miles from where I do. Maybe in a few weeks the weather will get cooler, but next week still looked like it was going to be very hot, according to the TV weatherpeople.

Mowing hasn’t ever been a task assigned to me. I’ll do other yard work tasks that don’t involve machinery or heavy lifting, but my garden plants are usually those that can survive some benign neglect. :)

It is definitely a wiser option than driving while impaired. I would be very cautious about using it if the only reason one uses the school-paid ride is due to alcohol intake that may impair driving. The school has to keep track of who had used it since it is a once / year utility.

Sotd is Oriza L. LeGrand Vetiver Royal Bourbon. I knew I had to have it upon one wearing out of a sample vial, so we’re really just starting to get acquainted for real. There’s a lightness and an ever so slight brightness about this bebe, partially attributed to a cool mint note up top.

I think I’ll be in this one for a while, but a couple of you are reminding me of how much I enjoyed Shalimar last summer, so maybe that will be in my August rotation.

Eek on the mysterious bruise! It could be the most innocent bump (a door or while wrangling a kitteh or whatever). Hope it goes away soon.

Maybe not an exact dupe, but Vitabath original Spring Green may be a pretty close match as a shower gel for Wrappings. I have the ginormous bottle in my stash!

I read your weekend update on the upcoming wedding; glad to hear that some of the stress went away.

Thanks for the hot tip on the Vitabath shower gel!

I think maybe the bride & groom are feeling some relief, too. They have a lot of other things to deal with right now that they can focus on.

I reached for Amouage Opus VIII this morning because something told me to and it’s just right. Jasmine and Ylang plus incense and spice. It’s bright not heavy. I like it for our current hot humid weather. But I like it in any weather. I’m supposed to meet a former student later to go for a walk (distanced, with masks) and meet his wife. They live in Denver but she’s here to have cancer treatment follow-ups. It’s so sad when young people face these hard struggles especially in our current times.

You smell amazing! I adore Opus VIII and it blooms beautifully in the heat. This is the first summer that I have worn it more often than usuaI and I have been enjoying it a lot.

Jasmine and incense? Hmmmmmm, maybe I will start hunting around for a sample of Opus VIII.

That is a pity your former student and his wife are in such a rough spot right now.

Thanks all! We had a great walk and they were excited to see juvenile night herons strolling about nonchalantly. Right here in the city on a very fancy tree-lined street! I’d been hoping for that. We also heard a screech owl. Megan has a good prognosis but is getting tests done here because her cancer is rare and there are specialists here. She has a Ph.D. in biology and they are both big birders. We also had a beautiful sunset with lovely peach and pink clouds. Oh, and saw egrets too.

Shalimar Souffle Intense. It’s not what I would call “intense” in Shalimar terms, but I’m not blaming it. It stayed with me all day, and revealed new facets/notes now and then in a quiet way.

The bottle did influence me and it looks as good in person. I should have worn it two days in a row to get to know it better. Yes, I am a Shalimar fan and sure am wanting that new Philtre de Parfum when it arrives.

I’m just glad we have air conditioning in the house today. On Sunday evening, I finally did get the chance to wear Zoologist Bee, three days after I’d wanted to wear it. Oh, well. I may put on a bit of a nice, light cologne at bedtime tonight, one that feels cooling to me. :)

In the outdoors scents category, the heliotrope is blooming again, and I could smell it this morning. :)

What do your heliotrope plants smell like? Almonds or Play-Doh?

Hello! LOL! My brother and I were talking on the phone a few weeks ago, and he said he’d never smelled heliotrope, so I tried to describe it to him.
“Cherry…vanilla…almond…powdery…” So almond made it in there.

I can’t think of a real-life flower I’ve smelled and gotten a Play-Doh kind of smell from. In Passalong Plants, either Steve Bender or Felder Rushing describes sweet shrub (Calycanthus floridus) as smelling like Juicy Fruit gum from a certain year of the 1970s, and once you’ve read that association, you can’t forget it. :D And I’ve also mentioned how the Agastache smells like root beer. But I can’t think of a Play-Doh scent from a garden plant I’m familiar with.

Cherry + vanilla + almond + powdery = sounds like the original Jergen’s lotion from way back in the day. Or at least my memory of it.

with thanks to the lovely NSTers who shared their stash with me.

Feeling incense-y and mellow today, I am back from a trip to the beach, doing my best to hold on to the positive vibes.

Had my first surfing lessons this past weekend, and it was FUN. :D

Wearing about 10 sprays of Heure Exquise tonight. Was back in the office today; they installed dividers and plexiglass between some of the desks since I as there last, including mine and my new neighbor. Small steps.

Yesterday I made a batch of cinnamon ice cream; I used a totally different base recipe than last year, this one is a keeper! Just a tiny scoop or 2 is all you need. Stay cool everyone.
