Friday scent of the day 7/24

Posted by Robin on 24 July 2020 304 Comments

It's Friday! Also, Tequila Day, and we've finally reached the end of the alphabet. Our community project for today: wear a perfume by Zoologist, Xerjoff, Worth Paris or Yosh if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letters W, X, Y or Z.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I got nothing! (Nothing I can find, anyway.) So I'm wearing the same cheerful summer cologne I was in yesterday (despite the conspicuous lack of cheerful summer weather), Santa Maria Novella Queen's Cologne. No points for me.

Reminder: on 7/31, we're doing best of summer...wear the perfume you're reaching for the most this summer. (If it's winter where you are, wear the perfume you're reaching for the most this winter.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SotD: I did it, I was brave, Zoologist Hyrax… one spray on each wrist and one for my neck!

I’ll have to see how it goes at this volume… I’ve tried this monster of a perfume in tiny-tiny doses before and I actually like it, although I don’t think it’s a particularly considerate perfume to wear around others.

If this becomes too much, I’ll scrub and go to Yosh Sottile 1.61 for a complete palate change.

Avocado toast with berbère spice, and half a ripe peach for breakfast! Happy Friday everyone!

Congrats on being brave! I am not familiar with Hyrax, but it sounds like a formidable perfume.

Ooo did you blind buy a bottle of Hyrax? I have a sample that I used once. I wanted to get back to it, but it made a strong impression that it would be too funky for me. I seem to remember Elephant had a similar effect.

Good gravy no it’s a sample ? I love Zoologist for making strong statements in different directions but based on that I’d be far too chicken to blind buy.

Ha, ha – my sample is from LuckyScent, so when you said spray, I didn’t think other options. You have inspired me to try it again.

I had a sample of Hyrax and one try was enough.I swapped it away. But I really enjoy Elephant. In fact, I might wear it today. I had one sample that I used up. Alhough at first I hadn’t liked it, I found myself reaching for it and enjoying it. So I bought another sample. Haven’t yet committed to a bottle but I very well might, at least one of their travel bottles, which I think are a reasonable purchase and a nice size.

I see a Zoologist weekend ahead for me. I remember something I did not like about Elephant – but I am not very disciplined about sampling.

I have nothing for the CP.
According to the weather forecast, today is the last cool day before a new heatwave. So I am in Jul et Mad Nin-Shar (sweet rose, patchouli, oud), getting ready to wear a lot of fresh summery scents. It looks like you picked the right week for the “Best of summer” CP, Robin.

I’m wearing Zoologist Elephant for the CP. Having worn Zoologist fragrances all week, I can say that I have enjoyed some of them, and I have ordered five samples of the new fragrances. However, I don’t think this house is going to be one of my top five favorites. I am enjoying Elephant, which I wasn’t sure of, because coconut is not a favorite note. I am opting out of the next few weeks of CPs, mainly because I have a lot of new decants, samples, and discovery sets that I want to try.

Would Elephant be even remotely something a teenager might like? Thinking about it mostly because of the bottle (travel size) for my daughter. But it sounds like a loud perfume…

I don’t know teenagers’ tastes now but I suspect they’d like ones with a more fruit-floral nature. Elephant is not loud, but it’s green and juicy. She might be more attracted to the Nightingale or Hummingbird ones. Or Bee, but I think it’s not yet out on the travel spray.

Currently sitting on the balcony watching the rain fall ☔️. Sipping french press coffee, eating a bowl of fresh figs, sliced peaches and 2 Italian plums. (SmokeyToes, the kids ate all the bread , so mu first day of no toast)

SOTD Shalimar EDP, I love right now that the opening of bergamot and citrus is mixing well with this rainy air…? così sensuale

No toast, no problem! The plums and figs sound delicious! I love sauteed plums over ricotta drizzled w/honey.

I’m making an arugula salad with molasses/balsamic dressing, dried figs, blue cheese, and cherry tomatoes for lunch.

Shalimar Body Cream again today. It’s just perfecto! I can see using this very frequently vs the edp which I wear rarely, and only in cooler weather (what’s THAT? ?).

I took T-Rex to the vet yesterday for a couple things that were concerning me. Everything is curbside these days, with the Vet calling you after the exam. She called me to discuss everything and said they would send out the bill, but they were keeping the doggo! ? Good ol’ T-Tex is winning friends and influencing people wherever she goes.

That’s adorable! I love when vets express their appreciation for affable pets.

We had one cat (passed 5 years ago sadly) that was a big favorite at the clinic – thank goodness, because he had to go in several times for urine draws, ultrasounds, eye flushes… He cost us a lot on the one hand, but also kinda saved us money by never needing anaesthesia because he was so friendly!

Aww he sounds like a lovely cat. We used to have a golden retriever that we boarded fairly often at our vet’s and they let him roam free because he was so sweet and laid back. Our current cat Larry is a biter and kind of a jerk, he needs anesthesia for everything. Still love him though.

I guess heelers have a bit of a reputation, so vets and techs are always pleasantly surprised she is such an extrovert. They explain it by saying they thinks she’s mixed with Pitt Bull, because they are such people lovers.

Same here. Once our vet, now retired, kissed our sweet Muffin-cat on the head when he finished the exam. She just won’t use teeth or claws on any person, purrs when it’s time for a pill or a nail trim, etc.

Our last visit was curb-side also – but they let me walk our dog to the door, because there is no way he would walk away from me, especially to a suspicious looking door (unless, perhaps, a roast chicken was lying in plain sight).

Partial credit in West Third Brand’s Lost California. The palo santo/ herbs combo reminds me a lot of California deserts and drier canyons, and I really like it. I stumbled across it in a home accessories store in Philadelphia, tested but didn’t buy it and then regretted it for months until I bought a travel spray.

I am the same! I can’t find mine despite my recent effort to alphabetize my samples. Where did I go wrong? My librarian mother is shaking her head in disappointment at me. (She was a cataloging librarian, meaning that she always kept everything in good order and had the Dewey Decimal System memorised. This was back in the time before books came with pre-sorted Library of Congress catalog numbers. That transition was very tough on her!)

Go Team Civet! I am getting a sad feeling that I have spent some perfume money which, had I followed up on my samples, would have gone to a Civet travel spray instead of the shiny thing of the moment.

Wearing the most peculiar vetiver fragrance ever, Zoologist Bat. I find it to be a very cooling fragrance with the damp earth/mineral aspect and just a hint of fruit zest. I have often wondered if the composition contains Mitti attar/baked petrichor or a lab created equivalent. I first smelled it at Arielle Shoshana where a wonderful gathering of perfumistas met, many of them comment here, and I feel a sense of loss, because this sort of gathering, anytime soon, seems totally impossible.

I’m in Bat too, the original. That cool damp cave smell is what draws me in. And I’m drinking a house made fancy smancy iced coffee beverage, orange mocha. Very tasty, like those chocolate oranges you get at the holidays, with coffee.

Twins with MossyBerry in Civet. My other candidate for the CP was a Zara scent. It looks like they don’t have a very large presence in the USA but they have released several hundred perfumes, so not exactly a small operation.

PSA: Nordstrom’s in offering Lost Cherry in a travel spray as an exclusive. 10 mls for $72.

Zara has some nice, fun scents. My experience is that they don’t last long, but they’re so inexpensive, and many come in small sizes, so that doesn’t bother me. I really want to try the Zara Emotions collection, which is not in the USA yet, created with Jo Malone (the person, under her new brand Jo Loves).

I have been supporting and participating in Save USPS campaigns here in Virginia. I know that postal workers are not allowed overtime anymore and that if they cannot complete their work by end of shift, they have to leave it. One can see how that could snowball. I will not go on since this is not the appropriate place.

Our mail person retired and now there’s no rhyme or reason to the timing of delivery and I suspect some days are skipped. I’m all for skipping days once / week if that will remediate the issues but there has to be a very aggressive results-based project management with no extra incentive for doing what was supposed to be done.

My SOTD is Bombay Bling, a perfume I only recently discovered and promptly fell in love with. Such a joyous fragrance! For the longest time I did not seek it out because I did not think the notes were up my alley.
And speaking of not being up my alley, I’ve never smelled any of the Zoologist perfumes so many of you lovely people are wearing today.
One of these days I may decide to step out of my comfort zone and order a sample set.

Last week I had some electronics delivered and installed. I went outside to tip the guys as they were leaving. One of them commented on by “Bee” box and said he was a big fan of Zoology. This was the first time I ever met a fume head outside of a specific perfume blog driven event! We had a brief discussion of Zoology scents and which ones to sample next.

The brand’s Canadian website is open and delivers to the US (although they recommend premium mailing). They seem to be the only source for travel sizes. So I took a chance on Nightingale and Civet.
Today I am wearing Civet. It reminds me of Musc Ravager, but a bit lighter, something that can be worn outside the boudoir. (Does anyone actually have a boudoir, as opposed to a bedroom with an alarm clock, spare tv etc.)

That was a loooong time ago. Cedrat Enivrant is one of my favorites of the Atelier line and really out of all my perfumes. It travelled with me to many places and it is one I usually end up wearing for a full day outing when I know it will be warm out.

I’m on track today with Zoologist Moth, from a sample sent to me by one of you kind folk. I find Zoologist’s scents intriguing, but a little difficult to wear for any length of time. However, the only other CP choice I had was Yosh Ginger Ciao, which is a disaster on my skin.

It’s a sunny day here, and I’m going to spend some time today trying to get my unbalanced self to a state of greater equilibrium. I’d also settle for just a little less anxiousness about, I dunno, everything. 🙂

    Happy Friday, all!

Ginger rarely works for me. It really stands out, and bosses all the other notes around. I’ve always disliked most food with it, too.

It’s not the ginger that ruins it for me. The notes should work, but it turns into a massive Coppertone suntan lotion blast. I know some really like that – a la Bronze Goddess – but it’s not a scent I enjoy.

In other news I got zero sleep last night cuz we brought home a puppy! Exciting but exhausting.

We are trying to crate train but he was crying so much I ended up putting the crate on mr yasmina’s side of the bed ? mr yasmina had to sleep on the couch but since it ended the crying I might do this again tonight

Zucchini is a super adorable tan Maltipoo – his mom is a white coated Maltese and his dad an apricot coated toy poodle. He will grow to be 5-7 lbs, so he is a small guy.

So far we know that Zucchini is super smart – he is getting the concept of outdoor house training fast. We also know that his favorite place to rest is a human lap. He is a snuggly pooch!

Oh wow, that’s a huge number of pit bulls! I’d be open to adopting a couple of dogs when we retire but while we’re still working, it doesn’t seem fair if we won’t be home to walk them during the day. I live pretty close to work so it’s doable, but not ideal.
It’s been years since we’ve had a dog, I’m thinking of fostering an older dog first, to ease into the swing of things.

CP was a hill too high for me. So I’m in Byredo’s Oliver Peoples. It reminds me a bit of Bal d’Afrique–but with incense. (I do see that at least on Fragrantica, no incense is listed among the notes.)

Anyone know what gives with this perfume? It looks like it was discontinued and then revamped with new packaging–three different colored bottles that all have the same juice?

I haven’t given it a deep dive, but at first pass it looks like those three new packaged versions are no longer available either, at least in the US?

It’s been a draining couple weeks and I am glad it’s Friday. Was on a work call this morning and increased usage of behavioral health services was being discussed and the loneliness and isolation of the past few months people are enduring. Surprisingly, I have three out of four brands for today’s CP (all but Zoologist). I decided to wear the brand that is the least represented in today’s thread – Xerjoff.

Irisss was a topic of Perfumeland discussions a decade ago, but since it’s extremely expensive even now when many niche, “niche” and high-end mainstream brands raised their prices ($450/50 ml), I don’t see it mentioned too often.

I like it very much. I have another ml left in my tiny decant, so I’ll wear it once or twice again but after that I probably won’t be seeking it to add to my collection because I have many other great irises. But for the half of that price, I would have bought it.

$9/ml – and it’s not even the one in their Murano glass bottle! I mean, I could probably pay $60, OK, maybe $70 for a 10 ml brand travel bottle, but not $90. And definitely not $450 for 50 ml. I’m not saying that shouldn’t charge it if their market tolerates it. I’m just not paying it. I did pay for my decant 7-8 years ago, not sure how much per ml. But since then I found more reasonably priced iris loves.

Tequila Day! My sister was telling me yesterday about her sip of the summer, a concoction of Don Julio, juice of a lime and a bunch of Topo Chico over lots of ice. I’m not affiliated with either item I mentioned my name, but wish I was.

I’m in Zoologist Dragonfly from a sample thanks to a generous perfumista. It is lovely, very much enjoyed and now thunked. ?

That sounds delicious! I’ve been drinking a little tequila with lime sparkling water, lots of lime, and a teeny splash of simple syrup.

Just had a sip of El Tesoro Reposado, neat. I’m keeping it simple for Tequila Day. It’s a proper sipping spirit.

Joining several of you who wore this earlier in the week in Worth Je Reviens for today’s cp. With its soft blend of hyacinth, narcissus, and violet notes and aldehydes, it’s long been a springtime favorite for me. I have several vintage bottles in various strengths, but for today I’ve chosen it in vintage pure perfume form. A nostalgic scent for me for the many memories it brings, especially now during these difficult days when it’s so hard to look forward but oh so easy to reminisce.

The tiny blue green flask in its soft deep blue suede sheath was a gift from my MIL decades ago after a Caribbean cruise, and it’s she I’m thinking of today. As a young bride during the early feminist movement, I tended to think of her as a non-person, whose kind but very quiet persona was overshadowed by my FIL’s stronger personality. But as the years progressed and through all sorts of trials and tribulations she became a source of great strength for me, and when I became a MIL myself I found myself emulating her always supportive non-critical behavior with me in establishing a relationship with my new DIL. I miss her a lot but am somehow comforted by this melancholy scent and the chance to remember her today because of the cp!

On a happier note, and since it’s Tequila Day and as another extremely hot, humid weekend begins, I think after a dip in the pool I’ll switch to TB Set Sail St. Bart’s – with its tequila and lime notes, yum! – and get ready for the first White Sox game of the season.

    Happy weekend to all!

Yay is right! Even though my pool is just a backyard family size wading pool since my favorite park district pool is a no-go and baseball will only be watchable on TV and not live in the ballpark, I am grateful I can still enjoy two of my favorite summertime activities.

Zoologist Chameleon, my favorite of theirs I think. I like several but actually bought the bottle of Chameleon.

Haven’t checked in much this week but have worn OJ Osmanthus, Paris-Riviera, Beach Walk, and Orchid Soleil. It’s been a good smelling week!

    Happy Friday, friends.

Yay johanob! I decided to complete a required training course on health & safety for whenever we are returning to the office (I have no date yet, but it will definitely not be before September). It was a voice with a powerpoint presentation that kept going and going (no way to stop and rewind to re-listen). The worst part was overly soothing and s-l-o-o-w cadence offset by the very menacing background techno music.

Yay for Tequila Day! Maybe I’ll indulge later on. ?

There’s been plenty of rain, thunder and lightning in my area for the past 18 – 24 hours or so. Some of the overnight stuff was actually mentioned on The Weather Channel (uh oh). It certainly kept me awake for a while last night…

SOTD = Zoologist Beaver EdP, the new formulation, from the sample stash. I’m house twins with a lot of people today.

There was thunderstorm racket last night into the morning, then it was so gray most of the dah that I had to turn on my kitchen light for my Zoom calls – unheard of! I was able to work in a walk starting around 5:30 as while it was humid, it was not oppressively hot. I brought my umbrella, just in case.

Yeah last night was something else! I had gone to bed maybe 10 – 15 minutes before the thunder & lightning rolled in. Today had a couple of lightning bolts close enough that they went “Sizzle, Crack, BOOM!” ⚡?

Doing Yosh Sottile again today with a light spritz of Aliage on top.

Thanks to whomever suggested the party decor for my husband’s bday (I’m too lazy to go back and find that entry). He loved the Happy Birthday banner and asked to keep it up through the weekend. ??

Last night I wore Zoologist Civet to bed; today I am wearing Bat; both from samples. I don’t love either of them enough to need more.

I may end up with a sample of Bee as there are a few things sitting in an Etiket cart right now. Enjoying a rare lazy day home alone and am enjoying it!

I’m wearing Zoologist Sloth and edging closer as the day goes on to scrubbing it. There’s one of those strong spiky and semi-narcotic notes in it of sweet fruit rotting in the garbage can. I can’t pinpoint what it is, perhaps a combination of anise with fruits and chamomile and jatamansi? I have no idea what that smells like but looked it up and it’s also called spikenard, which sounds nasty. To my nose this just is not a slow and rather adorable creature. Too bad. Not doing much today but wanted to register that my breakfast was cottage cheese and blueberries, which is delightful and I recommend. We had a very good Zoom session with Mom yesterday afternoon. The last time we spoke I was horrified because she was unable to come up for the words for common items like glasses or necklace. Yesterday she was much better and very cheery. I’m so relieved.

Zoologist Nightingale was my Friday SotD! Love that oakmoss base, but I didn’t smell any of the floral notes listed. None. I’ll have to try again.
