Friday scent of the day 6/26

Posted by Robin on 26 June 2020 286 Comments

It's the last Friday in June already! Our community project for today: wear a perfume by Une Nuit Nomade, Ulrich Lang, Vilhelm Parfumerie or Vero Profumo if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letters U or V.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I am not overwhelmed with choice for this community project, but I am smelling great in Vilhelm Parfumerie Don't Tell Jasmine.

Reminder: on 7/3, wear a perfume with ylang ylang, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Happy Friday everyone!

Vilhelm Parfumerie Basilico & Fellini for credit points. The only perfume in my collection (incl samples!) that qualifies.

This one is bright and cheerful and reminds me of a sunny weekend I spent in London visiting a friend.

In Vilhelm One Lilac a Day. Hoarding what it is left of my second and last sample. The best lilac perfume I have smelled so far. Full bottle worth.

Sipping a frozen homemade lemonade and having a fruit salad. So refreshing on this super hot day. Not complaining though!
    Happy Friday, everyone!

Got to smell that in Liberty in London a couple of years ago. Not cheap, and the exchange rate was extra-brutal, so it did not go home with me. It isn’t available anywhere in Canada, is it? Just in case I have another austere (non)spending month and want to splash out…

As far as I know Vilhelm is a US brand (despite the scandinavian sounding name) so perhaps a retailer in the US ships to Canada?

Happy Friday! Cannot believe it is almost July.

Trying a brand that is new to me thanks to Undina! The brand is Nishane and the scent is Suede et Safran which is really quite lovely. It’s a leather scent, more of a buttery suede, with an interesting sweetness to it which I read is the ambrette seed. Wears very close to the skin and can def see wearing this year-round. Really beautiful!

I tried beautiful Nishane Patchuli Kozha from a sample that some kindly perfume fairy godmother passed on. Loved it. Balked at the price. The trend I am noticing is that perfumes become more expensive rather than less so.

It is an expensive brand. It’s too bad. I wonder if it is due to the cost of the materials as it’s clear this is made with high-quality ingredients.

I got nuthin’ over here for the CP. I swapped away my Onda a few years back (I mean, it was a great perfume, but it swung me around like the Hulk did to Loki), and my tiny sample of Rubj – gorgeous – is long, long gone.

So, I went with Voyage d’Hermes. JCE for the win this bright summer morning.

The thing is that on my skin, it is not the powerhouse that I expected. It went on moderately strong, but 3.5 hours later it is just a pleasant, not even rosy, scent. Voleur de Roses goes on much stronger, and lasts longer on my skin. I won’t get rid of La Fille, but I might over spray next time.

Une Nuit Nomade Fleur des Fleurs, and being an ylang scent it fits the next week CP too. It is a lovely tropical floral perfume but very very fleeting. It becomes a skin scent almost immediately and does not even last half an hour. I need to put on something else.

Sadly I passed on my Vilhelm discovery set so I have nothing for the cp. I did really like Modest Mimosa and Dear Polly. I think Vilhelm comes up with some clever names.
I’m in Le Lion from Chanel. My little decant was waiting for me when I got home from work last night. I’m not that good at describing perfume notes because I tend to use adjectives, but I’ll try to give my first impression. To my nose it is Shalimar-esque. I get bergamot in the opening and a slightly powdery amber. As it settles in, the powder becomes more pronounced. Definitely more amber than vanilla (again, to my nose) and there is the slightest hint of something burnt, but not in a bad way. I couldn’t smell the leather at all until I did a comparison with Shalimar on the back of one hand and Le Lion on the back of the other and then yes, sure enough there it was. My verdict is people who like Shalimar will either like it because it is similar or they won’t because they are devoted Shalimar fans and will see this as an inferior similar take on the notes. I also think if you don’t like Shalimar, you probably won’t like this, as it is quite powdery. Again, I am no expert and certainly no perfume reviewer, but this is my initial hot take.?

I just learned an interesting fact today from a statistician. She is finding that younger people are more interested in having a traditional family life with a stay at home parent, more self sufficiency, and less consumerism and desire for stuff. Maybe their taste in perfume will shift too. As for me, I have voile de violet, that half counts.

I don’t dislike Shalimar, but I don’t feel the need to own it. I’m more of a Chanel girl too, that Guerlainade just doesn’t work for me, but most Chanel’s do.

Thanks for the review! It sounds like a nice perfume. Other than if cumin is a note mentioned, every time I hear New Chanel Les Exclusifs, my heart goes pitter potter and my greedy hands want it and want it now. But, I haven’t heard from my UAE connection so will have to sit on my hands for now. I want my first impression to come directly from a bottle.

I sprayed, and I reapplied a couple hours later. Although it is a rich fragrance, it seems to wear close to the skin.(maybe I need 8 sprays?). Several hours in, the powder has gone away and it’s just a lovely amber. I think you’re gonna like it!

CP adjacent SOTD Unum Opus 1144, rich floral with vanilla underneath. I love this, and the only reason I haven’t bought a FB is because the bottle is so ugly. But, I am thunking my sample of this, and my collection will feel incomplete without it. I am hoping it has not been discontinued or otherwise become unavailable.

As noted earlier, I have nothing for CP. so, I went shopping in my sample bowl that sits atop my cabinet.

Decided to try the sample Kyse sent me with my scent from yesterday. This one is Sérénade au Fraises. Immediate blast of strawberry, but that settled a bit. I’m not a big fruity gourmand person, but this is enjoyable for now. It’s from a dabber, which sometimes is fainter on me. This seems to wear very close. I may continue to dab through the day.

I haven’t followed the CP at all this week (if I am honest, I haven’t followed any of them much over the course of quarantine), but I smell lovely in Cap Neroli, thanks to an extremely kind NSTer. I’ve been curious about this one for ages, thanks to the accolades it’s garnered on NST. It is great, and it gets the Fiance Stamp of Approval (a rare thing indeed), but it is not my favorite OB. (And yes, though it’s called Cap Neroli, it smells predominantly of orange blossom on my skin.) If a bottle of this fell into my lap, I’d wear it happily, but I’d rather a bottle of, say, Histoire d’Orangers fell into my lap.

You guys, I made a sourdough whole wheat grain loaf yesterday. I mention it only because even though it didn’t rise as much as I had hoped (my starter has been sluggish lately), the flavor was INCREDIBLE. (We may accidentally have eaten the whole loaf in one day, that’s how good it was.) It reminded me of all the $10 loaves I’ve bought at farmers’ markets in CA and France. If you like chewy sour flavorful grain loaves, definitely try it: https://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/clays-multigrain-sourdough-sandwich-bread-recipe

I wasn’t impressed with Cap Neroli either. Nice enough but not distinctive, I thought. But then again, orange blossom is not a huge love of mine.

Just in case you didn’t know this: Starters love rye flour. In fact, my starter doesn’t really perform at all unless it’s fed with rye flour.

I did know, but thank you for the reminder :) I don’t actually have any rye, and my starter has historically been quite energetic. I give it some irregular combination of whole wheat and white. If I ever do get my hands on rye, though, I’ll definitely give it some of that to jumpstart those little critters.

Hmm, maybe your indoors are too clean? When I started mine, I took it out on daily walks to the backyard. Even now, I keep them near a window that is open for much of the day.

Mine has been sluggish because I haven’t been discarding properly. So I need to get back in the habit of doing that.

8:40 AM and over 50 comments already. Hellooooo sniffies!

Joining in on the CP today.

I’m in Naja, which I should recoil from based on the notes. Nope. To me it is one of those scents that smells vaguely like clean clothing that’s been drying in a field in the sun.

I must share with you the ridiculous figure I cut at the moment. I am sitting at my desk, NST up on one screen, a writing project on the other, a cup of coffee on my left, and my feet tucked in neatly below my desk in a broiling pan filled with ice water.

No little U or V in my cabinet, so I’m wearing big V, Van Cleef & Arpels California Reverie. I have to make an appt at the optometrist to replace the glasses I lost, I’m wearing an old pair in the meantime. They were prescription, not readers, so there goes next month’s perfume budget. Maybe I should start wearing them around my neck like those lady librarians in ’50s movies.

Very hectic two days. Had to have a medical check 300 km from where I live. First time of crossing the border since the pandemic. It was good to see some different scenery, even though it was from my car.
SOTD is Fleur des Comores by MPG which I grabbed in a hurry this morning. I love this one so much. One of my best blind buys ever. It’s a lot like Vanilia from L’Artisan only not quite as sweet and more floral. It always hits the spot.

    Hey all!

    1) Am in a combo of Prim Botanicals Body Oil and BeautyPie’s Petals Heliotrope and Ambrette perfume. As I noticed before, BP’s fragrances perform nicely in warm weather and project more; in cooler weather they become more of a skin scent within an hour. And Prim Botanicals Body Oil smells wonderful, with a spicy jasmine/rose/bergamot scent. I smell like the vacation that I won’t get to have this year.

    2) Speaking of which, I am gonna buy proper lounge chairs and wifi speaker for the backyard patio. Since no Rogue River this year, gonna sun out on the backyard.

    3) The nasturtiums seemed to have won their battle against my peas. No worries- I have harvested bowls and bowls of peas AND have had flowers for salads! The roses are VERY happy- I have been deadheading and they are sending up even more sprays of flowers.

    How are you?

For some reason the YouTube fragrance crowd thinks this smells like Coco Mademoiselle. It does not. I like it though.
Funny kid story- my daughter went to cut a piece of cake, and her dad says ” that’s a pretty big piece, isn’t it?”
She puts it on the plate and says ” it’s ok, I will just cut it in half ” and took both pieces. ?
I took away one of pieces but thought that was some quick thinking on her part!

I contemplated Victorinox Snowflower (big V company, but small in perfume offerings) for CP points

…but I blind-traded my bottle of EldO Fat Electrician yesterday (after 3 wears it felt like it didn’t fit me quite right) – and I’m so happy with the new bottle that I wanted to wear it again!

It’s Rosarium by Angela Ciampagna. I often find incense frags TOO churchy and dry, but this one has a more unusual orris-celery-seed-violet thing going on that gives a very cool, vegetal, living quality to the perfume.

Neither incense nor orris are usually faves for me when dominant, but somehow this combo is perfect!

    Happy Friday!

    SOTD = Vero Profumo Naja

    Full credit.

Clean sweet linden tobacco. No melon to my nose and I really don’t know what osmanthus smells like. ?

To be perfectly honest, I was afraid of Vero Perfumes – very intellectual and complex. In the end, I ended up liking / loving Mito (don’t ask which version because I don’t remember) and Naja (don’t ask which version because it doesn’t say on the packaging / bottle). I wanted to post a picture of the bottle and packaging because they are very nice but I couldn’t get a good picture … will try again for next time.

In other news, maybe I’ll finally get to make banana pudding this weekend. And I really have to tackle my tax returns; I heard there may be another extension and you better believe I will wait until the bitter end.

I get partial points I hope in Neela Vermeire Ashoka. I just have a small sample which I’d forgotten but now I’m really enjoying it. It’s a delicate smooth fig with a strong coconut/milk aspect and I feel as if there’s a nice spice in it, like cinnamon, though it’s not listed. I guess it’s just a good sandalwood. I’m having some of my leek/asparagus/feta frittata that I made last night cold for my late breakfast this morning. I made it with four of the duck eggs I got with my co-op order today. It’s pretty tasty!

Thank you. I’m feeling a bit better since the governor finally admitted his errror and is scaling things back, and the county judge has announced we’re now at the Red Alert stage, and enforcing mask use in all businesses. Yesterday Houston reached 100% of ICU capacity. People are starting to wake up and pay attention. I can control my own risky behaviors but just worry so much about others in more vulnerable positions. I appreciate your concern.

Vilhelm Veek concludes with Dear Polly, my favorite Vilhelm scent. Black tea, bergamot, musk. You’d think that black tea + bergamot would give you Earl Grey, but it doesn’t, on me anyway. I get tea + pucker-up citrus. Nice.

We did a quick afternoon trip to Longwood today…more crowded than I expected and looked like they were expecting bigger crowds tomorrow (they were setting up the extra field parking). So nice to see the flowers though, and we spent a long time in the (uncrowded) veg garden, stealing ideas.

Most people were wearing masks where they should be and trying to maintain distance. Not everybody was following the directional arrows.

Just got an email that Francesca Bianchi has a new perfume out – Sticky Fingers. If it has the FB base, which smells like warm not clean body to me (sorry not sorry to those that enjoy her work), I probably won’t like it.

    But —

Coriander, cinnamon, iris butter, patchouli, sandalwood, heliotrope, musk, castoreum, leather, tobacco, tonka bean

    What’s not to love?

Heh I was going to say that the castoreum could definitely contribute to the unclean body odor that you mentioned. You can wait until it arrives in the US and order a sample from Indigo to be safe. They have a one-up on most other perfume shops because their 1ml samples come in 2.5ml spray bottles.

Today, I’m in California Reverie from VCA, from a decant. This is full bottle worthy. Nothing groundbreaking, just exquisitely pretty and long lasting. Have a good Friday, all!

Bit grey and chilly and I am half-thinking I might go to the movies this afternoon as the theatre reopened this week. I am tempted to see The Trip/Greece. Also, mid-afternoon movies are always empty and I love being alone in a dark theatre. Bois de Vanille so far

For today’s cp I have none of the brands listed but am hoping for partial points for a cheap thrill I bought a few years ago on clearance – Ulta’s Cocoa Rose cologne spray. Top notes are bergamot and hyacinth followed by rose, muguet, jasmine and iris on a base of chocolate, patchouli and musk. The opening is a bit harsh but the hyacinth is quite nice; it’s now settled into a nice mix of rose with other floral notes, looking forward to the sultry base which hasn’t arrived yet. For a cologne, this scent is quite strong and long-lasting, definitely worth whatever few bucks I paid for it.

Ventured out from my Covid-19 hidey-hole for a much-needed haircut this morning but not without a great deal of stress. My hairdresser of several decades retired and I had to find a new one in a new location. Nervous already about having a stranger in my intimate space, masks notwithstanding, the garage door wouldn’t open. Luckily, Mr. Laila works from home and after waiting for him to finish a phone call with a client, he was able to manually open it for me. But then my car wouldn’t start – hasn’t been driven for awhile – so, after waiting for his next phone call to end, he gave me a ride. Again, luckily, because our main car is a SUV and the heavy downpour began as soon as we set forth, because my little Mini-Cooper would’ve floated away. Got to the new location just in time – a building of individual salon suites – but the outer door was locked and I stood in the pouring rain pulling out my phone to call the hairdresser to let me in when someone passing by inside finally let me in. After that, all went well and I’m pleased with the results but am happy to just tuck in the rest of the day. Heavy storms predicted here later today, and I’m praying for no flooding.

And, once again, another feline mom has decided to have her kittens in the same neighbor’s yard where my orphan Little Bear came from nearly 2 years ago. Although not a cat person (she has a dog who can’t use its back yard until the cats vacate it) she’s a caring animal person and together with another neighbor and me, she’s working to feed them and find someone who will rescue them. Some things just never change – wish us good luck!

Hoping for an uneventful weekend ahead and a good one for all of you!

Thanks! Apparently, momma cat moved her kittens and they are, at present, nowhere to be found. This has happened in the past and is how I wound up with the ‘orphaned’ kitten who got left behind. Apparently momma cat senses that a rescue is in the offing and says ‘no, thanks.’ We’ll still be watching for them, poor babies.

No points for me, but I smell beautiful in Jour d’Hermes. Venturing out in a couple of hours for a long-needed haircut! I’m surprised at how jittery I am about expanding my horizons beyond my own little home world, but I guess it really is true that I’ve never lived through anything like this pandemic before, and not knowing at all what could be around the corner is disorienting.

Oh, and I’m going to try putting a little athletic tape over the nose bridge of my mask to see if I can keep it from riding up into my eyes and/or fogging my glasses – anybody tried that yet? Is it a ridiculous idea? Guess I’ll find out. :)

I’ve used the tissue trick but I stopped it a few weeks ago and have not had a problem.

Huzzah for getting a haircut! I’m due for one, and maybe everyone here who has been going for it will encourage me to make an appointment.

It did work! I was amazed at how well an inch or so of it over the bridge kept the mask in place. It’s not even terribly noticeable if one also wears glasses.

I learned 2 new terms for people’s reactions after the long period of Covid-19 restrictions: FOMO – those people who suffer Fear of Missing Out, and FOGO – those who experience Fear of Going Out. I think I know which group you and I belong to, and there’s a comfort in knowing I’m not there all alone.

You smell wonderful! Jour is so green and refreshing, one of my favorites from Hermes.
I haven’t tried the tape tip yet, but I should. My glasses are fogging up constantly.

Hi and happy Friday everyone! Chiming in very late, 3 hour Zoom meeting first thing today (cranky pants were on)…
My SOTD is Classic Patchouli by Von Eusersdorff, it has a V in the brand name and that’s as close as it gets! I’m wafting serious patchouli right now..

I’ve discovered that patchouli is very soothing for me. Almost on par with jasmine.

I agree, there is something very grounding. Also nice is patchouli mixed with vanilla and musk, or Patchouli with ylang ylang oil.

Back in grade school, my art teacher wore either patchouli, or Clinique’s Aromatics Elixir, mixed with the smell of paint and clay – it was just heaven! I wish they made a candle or perfume that smelled like that.
I am down to the bare bones of my Diptyque patchouli candle. It’s my favorite candle from them….

This is a very good patch! I put aged patchouli oil in my diffuser rather frequently.

OH, I adore aged patchouli! It’s so smooth, an it’s very vanilla-like.
I have a bottle of 30 year old vanilla that has traveled three states, I adore the old stuff.

    SotD = Onda EdP

from a spray sample that’s just about used up.

Goodness, this is a positively challenging scent. Love the ylang, but the coriander makes my nose twitch. Adore the honey, but the vetyver feels abrupt. Reminds me of MEM in a very good way because there is so much going on in this genius scent.

I’m seriously tripping on the smell of a fresh gardenia bloom a neighbor gave me. I put the just barely open bud in a vase on my desk last night. Today it has slowly opened and made me swoon with each waft.

Happy FriYAY to all you fantastic NSTers. Hope your day has been good to you in lots of ways.

So my observations of Onda EDP today are that Vero most certainly must have been thinking about vintage Guerlain Vetiver and also Molinard Habanita when she created this fragrance. It reminds me so much of both of these while not being exactly like either. Vetiver is an interesting note with many facets and can read as either super green and clean and also quite dirty and animalic. It is used quite deftly in Onda. I am grateful for my rather large decant and wish that Vero was still with us.

My mom had a glass vase, basically an oversized stemless wine glass, and she would float a gardenia blossom in it. Thanks for taking me back in time!
I had a wonderful exchange with a gentleman in the grocery store this morning. Won’t go into the details, but it was heartfelt, it lifted me up and I can see that there are good people around every corner. The day was indeed good to me.

Super late check in…wore Elie Saab Le Parfum L’Eau Couture for the grocery store trip. After cleaning up and some much-needed chocolate, applied Vilhelm Modest Mimosa. It was quite carrotty and a bit sweet on me. But, points and two sample plinks!
Added some L’artisan Mimosa Pour Moi, which doesn’t last long, but is a lovely skin scent with 8-10 sprays. I’m wondering if I’m anosmic to something in this one.
