Thursday scent of the day 5/21

Posted by Robin on 21 May 2020 255 Comments

Well, it's Almost-Friday. Plus, World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development and World Meditation Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in L’Artisan Parfumeur Traversée du Bosphore.

Reminder: 5/22 will be World Goth Day — get your goth on! (Need help? Here's the wikipedia page on Goth subculture.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is detail from the illustration View of the Bosphorus Strait, from Five Poems ("an illuminated and illustrated copy of the Hamse (quintet) of the Ottoman Turkish poet and scholar 'Ata'ullah bin Yahyá 'Ata'i (died 1044 AH/AD 1634)" via The Walters Art Museum, public domain.

Hi all, my SOTD is Mila Schön, from about mid-1980’s. I would describe this is a juicy Floriental with plenty of depth. Juice was a dark amber and very thick. *thunk*

I’ve been making random recipes from my grandmother’s cookbook. This week’s favorite recipe was New England Spider Cake. It’s a hit with the hubby, he’s requested that I make it again.

Headed out for my walk, coffee consumed, shoes on and I’m ready to go.

I switched it up this morning, no toast but at baci di dama with my morning coffee…

      Enjoy your walk..

        Those cookies look delicious!
Now I have an idea for amaretto cookies with Nutella filling.

That sounds fabulous SmokeyToes. I am sure you smell wonderful. I don’t know what spider cake is but the name makes me think of dark streaks throughout the cake. Is it a fruit or chocolate stripe in the batter?
Perhaps a simple dump in the ingredients and bam! Cake?

      Hi Angela,
Here’s a recipe from Food52. I think the spider reference is that the cast iron pan used for cooking has feet on the bottom. It should be noted that I HATE spiders, I lived in FL for 20 years, they grow them BIG out there!

Thank you SmokeyToes. My mouth is watering from that photo. I have bookmarked this, there are so many delicious recipes that I have discovered thanks to NST’ers. Some I will save for the holidays because they are decadently delicious and fattening.
I so enjoy Florida, and want a pet iguana but
I am NOT a spider fan either and I NEVER want to meet an alligator. It’s funny how I love the water but don’t dare go in it. Don’t you miss the ocean?

I live one block from Ocean Beach in SF, I see the Pacific ocean from my apartment. You can see my (Richmond district) neighborhood here:
Nothing against the flyover states, but I couldn’t live inland. I’ve always lived on the water.

You are so lucky! I long to be near the ocean, especially being in the desert. Luckily, a plane ride to the coast is cheap from here and hope to see some waves before too long!

I live close to Sutro Park, we hear and see coyotes and all sorts of wildlife. It’s quite amazing all things considered.

I’m in the North Bay and totally agree with you. In my 44 years I’ve lived on 2 continents, in two countries, two US states, 7 US counties, but never more than 30 minutes from the Pacific Ocean. It’s hard to imagine not being so close to big water…

Thanks, SmokeyToes, immediately pinned. I found another version on Kitchn, but your version looks less fussy. I have some maple sugar hoarded; think I’ll bust it out for this cake. ?

I add a touch of vanilla extract to the heavy cream filling.
Around the holidays, I also add a touch of rum extract and substitute dark brown sugar, it turns it up a notch.
I’m wondering what it’d taste like if I added a super ripe mashed banana with the filling….
See where I went with that??

Mmmm, I’d add some muscovado brown sugar with the banana.
I noticed one of the commenters saying she successfully made half a recipe. I think I’ll need to do that. ?

I was late getting started today, and rather than look at my discovery sets I just grabbed something off my nightstand. It turned out to be 4711 AC Myrrh & Kumquat.

Kumquat! I love the smell of the skin. We had a tree, well more of a bush, next to our driveway in the house where I grew up. I used to peel them just for the scent. At some point my mom had it cut down–one of those 80s overhauls of the house and yard that got our “natural light and clean lines” into Sunset magazine. (Insert rolling eyes imoji here!) Oh well.

Joining AngelaB in California Rêverie. Makes me want to go outside and enjoy the fresh, cool air here.

Took a walk up along the East River yesterday. Lots of folks out. Was highly entertained by a group of middle-aged men friends standing and chatting (I was sitting nearby, reading). One in a suit, drinking a beer. Others in shorts, one in a muscle shirt who had brought some exercise stuff. All had masks, but wearing them to varying degrees. No idea how they knew each other.

As I walked, the elastic on my mask broke. No worries. I wound the elastic around the post of my earring. That’ll work.

The main irritation was the folks on bikes. Some were fine, but others were going way too fast in too narrow lanes that handle walkers, runners and riders. Wish those wanting to speed would move to the bike lane on 1st Ave. Frankly, I wish they all would.

Just about 1.5 miles below Carl Schurz in Sutton area. So, I walk up and enter the promenade at 60th generally. I didn’t intend to walk all the way up yesterday, but I did and then sat on a bench to read. It’s a nice, almost 3 mile round trip.

The bike thing seems to be the case everywhere. We hiked at the beach and in a big urban park/forest on the west side of the city over the weekend, and in both cases there were cyclists trying to race on shared paths. If they’re trying to break speed records, they should be on the street, not on narrow forest trails meant for hiking. Grr. (Ok, rant over! :-) )

I miss those walks along the rivers in NYC. I spent a nice, but hot, summer there once, and I hiked everywhere, even the length of the island one Sunday, on a dare from a friend.

Summer in NYC. Ugh. We refer to those walks as The Manhattan Death March…usually taken when friends come to visit. We know someone who looped the entire Manhattan Island once. Crazy.

Growing up in NY before AC was a common thing always brings to mind ” Hot town, summer in the city, back of my neck gettin’ dirty and gritty” by the Lovin’ Spoonful.

I can smell going to the Worlds Fair in 64 and long drives home from Asbury Park with all the windows down in the Ford station wagon.

Both my mom and a former coworker did a loop of the whole island–one day a year a group called the Shorewalkers do it. It’s called The Great Saunter, and they always stop for lunch in my neighborhood park, so I see them each year.

Wearing Ormonde Jayne Woman for the 7th or 8th day straight, thanks to Missionista who so kindly sent me decants!

It is sooooo comforting and contemplative at the same time. It smells like wind and sunshine and open, safe outdoor space to me. I really love it.

World Meditation Day! There’s a great app for learning meditation called “WAKING UP”, if anyone wants to try meditation. Out of all of the apps I’ve ever downloaded for any reason, this one is in my top 10. There’s a “course” that “teaches” you how to meditate. It takes about 10 minutes per day and you can do it at your own pace. There are also great discussions about life, mindfulness, Buddhism, psychology. It’s not self help. I would call it self discovery? The meditation course is nice since it basically teaches you how to do several kinds of meditation, just by trying it for 10 minutes per day. If anyone wants a free 30 day invite, click my avatar for my email.

    Hi all!

On my way to get tested, just about out the door. I don’t feel any symptoms at the moment but someone I’ve helped is waiting on their results and seems pretty ill. Cross your fingers!

I’m wafting Cedre Sambac at the moment, as I did yesterday. Mulling over a new post on Instagram about it. Doesn’t hurt that I ardently love it.

As soon as I get back, I’ve got a loaf destined for the oven. I got some new flour and can’t wait to see how it holds together.

    Be safe!

Bright and sunny day despite being pretty cool. Looking forward to enjoy a couple of hours outside while taking my doggy to his follow-up appointment early this afternoon. He has shown some improvement since last night. I think he is bouncing back. ??

I’m wearing Après l’Ondée, hoping for some rain. It’s incredibly dry outside. Lovely and sunny yes, but we really need some water.

Tea was a high end first flush Darjeeling this morning, have since switched to Festin d’Or, one of my favourite MF’s.

You smell wonderful Robin, Traversée is really nice. You seem to be wearing a lot of Artisans this week.

Hello friends, anti-Goth today in the dregs of my Ginger Piccante. I sparkle.

I’ve grown pretty enthusiastic about sandwiches ever since the spectacular fishwiches I mentioned on NST last week. I baked a sourdough focaccia (using my starter as yeast source instead of commercial yeast, because of course I have a pet starter now) that was AMAZING–all the tastiness and convenience and low effort of focaccia, all the flavor of a well-fermented sourdough. Honestly the sourness shined through better in this low-hydration setting than in actual sourdough.

Anyway! Sandwich 2 was a BLAT (bacon lettuce avocado tomato) with garden-grown lettuce, and sandwich 3 was a magnificent grilled cheese-style sandwich with habanero jam, spiced tomatoes, and chorizo. And now we are out of focaccia again. Oops.

Woke up this morning in my older bottle of no 5 (2009-ish) and did some cleaning and organizing since my aunt is coming tomorrow and it’s my mom’s birthday tomorrow. Will finish the rest after I get off work. Wearing a dab of vintage no 5 right now. I was goofing off after work and it looks like Andy Tauer is shipping full bottles to the US again…but it’s too late to cancel my Luckyscent order since it shipped last night.

In Bogue O/E this morning; got a bunch of Bogue samples from Luckyscent with the bottle of Mem my spouse bought me, so I’m working my way through them. This one is nicely constructed so far, but it’s not quite “me”. The only one I’ve disliked is OOOH so far, and that’s more on me than the perfume. It smells like bug spray on me — not figuratively, but literally. All I could think about was summer camp as a kid the whole time I had it on.

I put in my order for peonies so will get some on the weekend (flower sellers are no longer allowed at the farmers’ markets, which are defined as an essential service for groceries, so can’t sell anything else). I love peonies!

And maybe I’ll be inspired to meditate today! I have Headspace, I’ve been an intermittent meditator over the years, but somehow it never occurs to me to just take the time and DO it.

In Shay & Blue’s Blood Orange from a recent StC decant sale. Bitter and sweet. I’ve been pretty much radioactive in my perfume since the lockdown began—copious amounts of amber, oud, saffron, patchouli type perfumes. Today I am venturing out to Walnut Creek, about a 30 minute drive from our house without traffic—the farthest I’ve been from this house since February. Taking my son to a routine, but mandatory hospital visit. So my perfume has to be minimal. Hoping this one mellows by this afternoon when we head out. I was told I would get a call from a nurse the day before, yesterday, for a detailed pre-visit health check. No call. Not sure if that means things are getting looser, or just getting sloppy. Masks and gloves will be donned!

SOTD is Tam Dao. It has been raining here lately, and I happened to look out the back window and saw that the peonies are bursting riotously into bloom, but because they are a heavy flower and now are very wet, most were close to (or actually on) the ground. So I went out and cut long stems of them to put in a vase in the kitchen. They’re so fluffy! And peony leaf should be a note in perfumery if it isn’t already.

Sotd is a wrist to wrist comparison – on my left, St. Clair Casablanca, on my right, DSH Vers la Voute Etoilee…

To me St. Clair Casablanca is Le Maroc pour Elle’s sophisticated cousin, who comes from the same village originally, but through sheer luck, escaped to a nice boarding school on the Swiss/French border, and is now back home in a professional position of the very pretty, hard driving, make an appearance, take over the room and get things done sort. When I wear this by itself, I just love it. This is a very smooth flowery oriental chypre perfume, and the little 30 ml bottle is so cute, I really want one on my perfume tray.

But, in comparing it to DSH Vers la Voute Etoilee, the DSH wins big. To my nose, on my skin, it smells better immediately, and continues to just smell better, and more, as the day wears on. Vers la Voute Etoilee means Toward the Starry Vault, and the blurbs say many of the flowers are of the night blooming sort, and Dawn spent 4 years developing this, and it shows in the complexity and quality of the result. Every time I sniff my wrist, it is slightly different, and still fabulous. The French name is so clunky and hard for me to remember, even when I just love this, that I think this perfume slips from notice and memory and doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. This is also a modern chypre, heavy on white florals, with a nice dose of carnation coming to the fore now and then, which is probably part of why I like this so much, but now, 6 hours and several handwashings after first application, VLVE is still strongly floral, with herbal and resinous underpinnings, while Casablanca has retreated a mildly sweet quiet incense with floral suggestions, very pretty in it’s own right, but it is just outclassed by the VLVE. If you like the more is more approach to perfumes, and need a really pretty, really grownup fragrance, check this out. I have a tiny rollerball sample of the extrait and a 3 ml spray of the EDP, which I combined for this wearing. If I were looking for a signature scent, this would be it. As it is, it has caused me to put my beloved Mitsouko away for a while…

So happy I did this immediate comparison. I am adjusting the order of my To Buy list as a result…

I walked out the front door yesterday for work and ten feet away, smack dab in the middle of the drive we’re two wild turkeys. Up close and personal, I never realized they were that big! Or maybe they just were some mammoth subspecies..? All of us were so startled, we squawked.

    Thunked Anima Dulcis today.

SOTD is Joy EDT, the real Jean Patou Joy. I smell pretty fancy while I’m doing my gardening! I have a day off work today, which is so great. Getting a lot done in the garden and house. In bloom in my garden right now are some wonderfully fragrant flowers: Magnolia grandiflora, gardenia, roses. White lilies are about to blossom. I’ve been pinching tomato suckers and my hands smell like tomato leaf! When Joy wears off, I think I’ll put on some of St. Clair Scents’ “Gardener’s Glove”, which has a great tomato leaf note.

    SotD = Infusion d’Iris EdT + Infusion d’Amande

yay for World Meditation Day! Mindfulness is important to me. I shall yoga my inner voice into quiet submission later this afternoon. My teacher has put a few lessons online for past students to enjoy, her voice is so soothing.

I’m doing Adriene’s 30 days again, when I finish that series I’ll check out her newer 30 days at home videos. She’s adorable.

I like the two Infusions together, though I’ve got on more Iris, just a touch of Amande. I found an old decant of Amande that had evaporated down to syrup, so I added a little alcohol and gave it a good shake. Turned out fine. :D

Looking forward to a dose of Goth tomorrow. I have no idea what to do, perhaps I’ll shamelessly copycat someone.

Hope your almost-Friday is fantastic, fragrant friends. You smell lovely.

In other news, I spoke to my neighbor and her boyfriend this afternoon when I was out to pick up the mail and to close the garbage bin. My neighbor was appreciative of my offer (and I did) to call the property management company as that gave her a moment to calm down. The boyfriend looked fine. The car was totaled and he has a rental for now. They were on their way to go to Wegmans so everything seems to be back to normal for now except for the gaping hole on the siding.

I’m technically off from work tomorrow but have to login for probably 2 hours and also 2 hours every day through the entire holiday weekend. A colleague has not had a proper weekend due to a report that has to be done everyday (COVID-19 related) and I am taking one for the team ☝️.

Forgot to say I took a ferry boat trip up the Bosphorus from Istanbul and it was just fabulous! You buy a very cheap ticket and can get on and off each way as you wish as it cross-crosses between the European and Asian sides. Wonderful views of the hillsides, mansions, small towns, and cargo ships. Great breezes on a hot day. Our guidebook said one town had the best yogurt on earth. People came on board at that town selling batches of it and it truly was! At the last stop we disembarked and climbed way up a high high hill to get to the top, where we had marvelous views of the Bosphorus and Black Sea. We ate up there at a delightful taverna in the shade. The whole route was lined with apricot trees bearing ripe fruit. It was one of the best travel experiences of my life!

Late last night/early this morning: Nobile 1492 Patchouli Nobile. By whatever time in the morning that was, I thought I had missed Friday…

We were busy doing some pretty successful shopping yesterday (Thursday), and took a walk in a local park in the afternoon. Mom stuck to the paved trail, but I ventured onto the trail by the lake.

I could hear a lot more birds than I could see, but I saw a mallard coming in to land on the lake, and a red-winged blackbird or two on the reeds. There were smaller birds — possibly the tree swallows that were around everywhere else in the park — dipping over the surface of the water. My guess was that they were scooping up little water bugs and such to eat. In the areas that were not quite at the water’s edge, we saw bluebirds and robins.

A little later, when I was in the parking lot at Wendy’s, making a couple of phone calls before getting on the drive-through line, a mockingbird landed on top of the driver’s side mirror of the car for a minute before going up to perch on a power line. If I’d had my window all the way open, that might have been even closer, like a face-to-face encounter. I was glad it wasn’t quite that close, though.
