Wednesday scent of the day 5/20

Posted by Robin on 20 May 2020 326 Comments

Happy Josephine Baker Day and World Bee Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

It's not quite as warm as it should be, but all the same I'm in L’Artisan Parfumeur Bucoliques de Provence.

Reminder: 5/22 will be World Goth Day — get your goth on! (Need help? Here's the wikipedia page on Goth subculture.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I am wearing Histoires de Parfums 1828. I finally bought a small bottle after admiring it and going through two small samples of it.

Robin, you smell great ! Bucoliques de Provence is on my list of bottles I would like to have.

It’s on my list too! And will stay there until L’Artisan makes 15 ml bottles again :-)

I am not sure if I ever tried 1828, it sounds lovely.

That would be nice if 15 ml bottles were available.

I first tried 1828 in a small store in my local mall. I kept smelling it all day and enjoying it. I made up my mind that I was going to buy a small bottle, but then the store closed. I ordered sample online, went through it, then finally ordered it from Luckyscent.

I just looked it up, not having tried it. It sounds intriguing–the combination of citrus + eucalyptus is interesting. I have a few of theirs and you’ve given me an idea for my SOTD on Friday! Indeed, for today I think I will look up my bottle of 1873, Colette. Thanks!

I am in Atelier Cologne Rose Anonyme, which I consider Goth-light. It has the right notes for a Goth scent – rose, patchouli, oud – but the overall effect is lighter and softer than you would expect from this scent. Still can be qualified as Goth, I guess.

I love Bucoliques, and I adore your choice of picture for today.

I’m wearing the wonderful Duel. After cleaning my fridge last weekend I rearanged my Goutals. I really love this one, it’s just right.

Tea is another batch of lavender oolong. Equally wonderful.

Nonstop rain here, but I’m feeling fine in Anima Dulcis from a small decant from a generous NSTer.

I’ve had this for a while and I’m not sure why I haven’t tried before now. It’s lovely, and not sticky sweet which for some reason I was expecting. It’s more incense on my skin.

I did some liberal spraying, but it’s not a big mouth scent. Very polite, yet delicious and unexpectedly sexy. Kind of like when you meet a complete stranger, make eye contact and feel that low hum and frisson of physical attraction. Delightful?

Smell well and stay safe, peeps!

I remember liking AD when I tried if from a sample. Arquiste is a very good line. My favourite so far is Boutonnière No. 7. But I have only tried 3 or 4 so far.
If you like AD you might also like Akro Dark, another not sweet chocolate scent, which is quite sexy as well.

I’ll have to sample AD one of these days. This one is close enough to Ummagumma that I’m not hankering for a bottle. But, I will finish my little sample and thoroughly enjoy it.

I had a travel size of an Arquiste (I think it was Arquiste?) when they partnered with a clothing store (whose name I REALLY can’t remember!) and was named No. 53…?! Or something along those lines. Poor memory aside, I de remember really enjoying that one as well.

lillyjo – I have a bottle of each (new and vintage). The vintage (the label on the bottom has ‘Made especially for Jessica McClintock Inc. San Francisco, CA 94103’) is rounder and smoother, with a more-forward lily of the valley note and incredible staying power.
The new version is a little sharp, herbal/citrus notes are more forward, but it settles down on me after an hour or so and the drydown is still nice.

A-mazing! My first professional job in theatre was on tour with Angela in MAME as wardrobe mistress and dresser. That gold spangled jumpsuit was her in costume for the song “It’s Today” and many a night I would be hand stiching those little gold bangles that had fallen off in all the dancing!! She was a wonder and delight, and remains so to this day.

    Having a moody morning..
Kids were listening to Cat Stevens this morning, when they got to his song ..if you want to sing out sing out..I became overwhelmed with emotion, escaped to the shower and let myself have a good cry. Who knows where that all came from..exhaustion..frustration….

Then proceeded to let myself eat not one but four pieces of toast with peanut butter and coffee.

Our reception song was the Carole King song “I’m so glad it was you” from the You’ve Got Mail soundtrack. I knew my husband a full 12 years as a friend before we even started going out. After that, we got married within 8 months, though!

My dear friend got married in Hawaii 10 years ago today.
She danced to this with her father after the ceremony.

Every time I listen to Cat Stevens sing ” oh very young ones what will you leave us this time, we are only dancing on this earth for a short time” I am filled with joy and sorrow at the same time. Every decade since it was written and recorded brings nuances that weren’t there.

I could weep today from not sleeping last night.

Music always moves our emotions forward, whatever they are, that’s its job. Let your emotions have their way (they will any how), and you will feel the stronger for letting go.

I associate that whole Cat Stevens album with a period in my life with great change and personal growth.I think I saw Harold and Maude 3 times when it was in the theaters and those songs were such a huge part of the film and my life.Music has that wonderful power to trigger deep emotions unexpectedly and transport us like a time machine.

After three days of rain and gray skies, I woke to a beautiful blue sky and sun.?
I’m in 10 Corso Como and headed out for a massage in a bit. I have to get some decants in the mail this afternoon and have a question for all of you. When they ask if your package has anything liquid including perfume, do you say yes or no? I know it has to go ground if I say yes and I feel like that takes longer…

I’ve gone both ways. I don’t feel good about lying, but I think the risk of perfume being dangerous is about nil. Ground takes longer and is more $$. Interested to hear how others answer this.

If it’s 10ml or less, I say no. If it’s a full bottle I say yes. There’s some small amount that’s ok or used to be, I looked it up a long time ago, but I don’t remember how much it was, less than 10ml I’m sure.

My Post Office doesn’t ask, so I don’t tell. I really think our little decants, even bottles, are getting caught up in regulations that weren’t made for them. I have had ground packages arrive super late, with the package looking worse for wear to boot! Add hot temps to that…plus, most of my perfume purchases don’t ship ground, either.

I think most of the mailing restrictions are a result of 9/11.

I always say yes because I’m a terrible liar. BUT! I have had postal workers ask if it was less than an ounce, which I generally is, and they said that was fine. So. I think it depends to some extent on the person working that day…

I am pleased to see that the tumblr Goths Up Trees is still around! I think I read about it here on NST a number of years ago.

    https://gothsuptrees.net/

Another good fragrance for Goth Week would be ELDO Eau de Protection.

I’m not finding that, but I just remembered that I have some genuine Indonesian patchouli essential oil in the it for the Anima Vinci perfume class I did a couple of weeks ago. The concentrated oil smelled very different from what we usually think of as patchouli, and it lasted on the scent strip for days. I think I’ll renew the scent strip later to contemplate during the rest of Goth week.

I’m happily wearing Dryad again today, and (apparently) celebrating World Bee Day by wearing some Bombas socks, which have a little “Bee Better” inscription on the inside front of the ankle. The inscription isn’t why I bought them or wear them – I bought them because they donate a pair for every pair sold, and I wear them because they feel really good on my feet. No affiliation, of course, other than that they’re touching me most days now. :)

I’m in Un Jardin Sur Le Toit today. The morning walk was warm and muggy, which perfectly matched the Hermès.
I’ve got wheat bread to bake and pesto to make. The basil plant is getting leggy, but I don’t have a lot of it, so I’ll be adding parsley and maybe some oregano to punch it up. Fresh herbs, walnuts and Parmesan cheese and olive oil can’t turn out too badly, I hope. I have roasted cherry today in the freezer, so those might go in, too.

Wearing Bal a Versailles cologne to work (I sit in a room by myself now so who cares) and the way this day is shaping up, boy do I need it.

Curiously I have two colognes of Bal and they smell different… one square glass bottle that I think is 60s/70s that smells more amber-animalic, and a white spray bottle with gold lettering of indeterminate origin that is more powdery-leathery. It’s the white spray bottle today.

SSS Bee’s Bliss for the World Bee Day. This is probably my favorite SSS perfume.

Later today I’ll add a spoon of honey to my tea.

Our office is going to be closed until at least July 15th – so, it’s almost 2 more months of working from home. I’m not sure how I feel about it.

I feel like an awful person saying this but bees are the bane of my existence in the summer. They won’t let me sit in the garden and I start really resenting them because it’s only warm enough to be outside here a couple of months of the year.

I know though how important they are ecological.

Bees seem to be very temperamental. We live in an area that is Shangri-La for bees, large gardens, old trees etc so there are always swarms of bees “moving in”. My neighbour across the street always gets an a-hole swarm – stinging her dog and pet tortoises, moving into her roof. We had a swarm in our water meter (accidentally discovered by my husband forcefully opening the cover for the meter reader! Only one bee sting, thankfully) and decided to have it moved by a bee keeper into a hive and onto our property. In the two years since, I have once accidentally stepped on one hiding in the grass, but kids and dogs routinely stand RIGHT IN FRONT of the hive, “watching the bees”, and the bees just go about their business. It seems we have a very civilized bunch!

World Bee Day? Has anyone seen the documentary Honeyland? Watched it about a week ago and immediately wanted to watch it all over again. It is that good. It is a message inside a parable framed as a documentary. It helped that I was at the time working on transcripts of oral histories from Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan (Honeyland takes place in North Macedonia–so not exactly next door, but similar terrain–which also brings me to my all time favorite podcast–I’m on the fourth of nine episodes of Dolly Parton’s America, which also has some exploration of mountain life that has echos in Honeyland).

ANYWAY! I’m in Ambra Aurea from a decant. Love love love this one. But when I was in the shop, the full bottle I sampled didn’t move me. Not sure if it was my nose or that the bottle in the shop genuinely smelled different—but I wound up buying something else.

Not goth but smelling springy in AA Jasminora.

Speaking of goth though I just read a modern gothic detective:crime novel by Elly Griffiths, who series several here recommended. This is a stand-alone novel by her called Stranger Dairies

I started the Dr. Ruth Galloway series by her based on springpansy’s recommendation and am on book 3 and loving it. The characters are great and I am totally invested. The plot sometimes has occasional Scooby Doo moments but I let those go b/c of the love for the characters and great storytelling.

I will add this one to my list to read as well.

Kind of evil/unbelievable characters introduced who turn out to the be the villain to take the fall but mysteries need those characters too to be fair…sometimes it can feel a bit forced/obvious though.

First, since a few of you enjoyed the Uniqlo x Marimekko top I wore yesterday, I agree that it looks more expensive than it is ($19.90). It is 100% cotton, a very soft cotton, and it seems to be well-made. These were my first purchases from Uniqlo because I don’t really like to buy fast fashion anymore, and I assumed their sizing was designed with only thin people in mind, as is usually the case (see H&M, Zara, etc.). Anyway, I also bought the black and white big circles that Calypso mentioned liking and both color options of this print: https://www.uniqlo.com/us/en/women/uniqlo-x-marimekko?quickView=428511

Today I’m doing goth in Andrea Maack Coven. Oh, and the meeting I was nervous about yesterday went very well!

Thanks! I already have all four of those shirts I’d orderd (placed in two separate orders to make sure I liked fit and quality before ordering more). This was my fun budget spring clothes shopping in lieu of being able to do any in-person shopping.

I’d love Marimekko bedding one of these days. I’m a print fanatic.

That pattern in the link I posted today is the reason I ordered from Uniqlo in the first place! I’m a sucker for fruit prints especially strawberry, so I’m crazy about the two shirts. After that success, I decided to order the two circle options.

I think they’re pretty true to size. I ordered on the large size for what I normally wear because I wasn’t sure how they cut their clothes (slim or not). Since it’s a boxy cut, I decided to wear it a little oversize so it doesn’t get bunchy around my curves. So, I got what I wanted. :)

Bruno Fazzolari au dela, from a sample. But I also put a tiny spritz of Songes on one hand and that is dominating big time! Poor au dela, I’m not sure what you smell like.
Robin, I love your SOTD. I had a sample of Bucoliques once that came in a freebiemeet sample pack and fell in love. I recently bought Haute Provence by Nicolai as a substitute but I think Bucoliques is different enough I still need it….

Bucoliques is a lot softer and sweeter. Cologne Haute Provence is quite a green and rustic lavender. I love and own both but I don’t find them to be that similar at all.
Bucoliques reminds me a bit more of Bvlgari au Thé bleu.

    Love that Van Gogh.

I am going through sample sets I never used up and am sampling Lady Vengeance and Mad Madame from JHAG today.

I wanted to point out a feature that is new-ish to Fragrantica when they updated their site in the last several months…if you look up a perfume house and click on Advanced Filter, it brings up Notes on the left hand side and you can click on Vanilla ? (or whatever note/notes you are interested in) and it will limit the list of perfumes to those w/ that note which is super helpful if you are looking to prioritize vanilla over all other things like me. ? I was able to pick out the 2 samples above using the filter to make sure they have vanilla over their lesser non-vanilla counterparts. So if you have samples and are in the mood for vanilla, iris or musk, etc. this filter is helpful to pick the right one to make the day great.??

I’m sad today. Bertie Wooster’s vet visit resulted in the diagnosis of an aggressively malignant tumor. There is no treatment. He’s home now, not in pain and I will keep him here until the end. No perfume is comfort enough, but Slowdive is helping a little.

Had a horrible day at work today. There is a person that I work with tangentially, she has nothing to do with me, but is a manager of staff that I depend on to do my work and she just makes everybody miserable. Which brings me in conflict with her, especially now that everybody is stretched thin and people are fragile. Rant over.
Scentless, luckily, so no bad connotations.

I took the Bee World Day theme literally: SOTD is To Bee, by Roxana Illuminated Perfume. It does have honey overtones but it avoids any cliche vanilla sweetness and instead goes for botanical muskiness, like an inside of a bee hive, with a beautiful clover note.

Went to Trader Joes, but the line was waaaay tooo long so I did a Wegman’s run instead. Not as many of the items I wanted, but less crowded more spread out in the store was good. Now I have some fresh fruit and veggies for a bit.

I am jealous — still not going to stores here, and getting produce delivered is NOT satisfactory. But we are starting to get veggies from the garden. Had grilled asparagus tonight, and hope to be harvesting lettuce and spinach soon.

Bee bees bees! I love bees. My masters research was looking at how many different males bumble bee queens actually mate with. After that, I got to do some amateur beekeeping as part of my job in California. We have beautiful carpenter bees in my backyard and my dog thinks it’s the best thing in the world to chase them as they fly.

Ironically, I don’t really like honey. And perfumes with honey notes smell terrible on me – just too overwhelming and almost rank.

Today I wore Philosykos in the morning. It wore off and I switched to What Would Love Do from Lush.

In other news and oh boy, this is other news ?!

Shortly after 5pm yesterday, as I was finishing up work, I heard scraping, screeching, tearing and then silence. I opened the front door to investigate and here’s what I saw – next door neighbor’s boyfriend’s car was on top of the sidewalk and my neighbor looking like this ?. Then the boyfriend slowly (!) backed up the car and off the sidewalk. The front of the car was accordioned (it’s an older heavier car, thank goodness) and the siding by their kitchen was torn off, along with some vegetation. I asked my neighbor if she wanted me to call the property management company (yes, had to leave a voicemail and a text) and asked if the boyfriend is ok (yes, “he said he’s okay” and indeed, he was ambulatory). I am NOT even going to speculate how it happened. My neighbor and her boyfriend are in their late 80s. Note: This is not the neighbor for whom I grocery shop. Oy!

Yikes! Your story reminds me of another I read on a different blog yesterday. The poster lives on a twisty, windy rural road, that now has more speeders since the pandemic. Driver, speeding/texting not paying enough attention in general, spins out on a curve, clips a fire hydrant, and winds up facing the wrong way, half on the road, half in a ditch. The poster, hearing the commotion, runs out of his house to see if driver’s ok.
The driver screamed at him because he wasn’t wearing a mask!! Oy, people!

Our postal services have finally caught up with the backlog of online shopping when all the shops were closed, and my two non-essential perfume purchases arrived yesterday. I bought Arquiste’s Anima Dulcis and Velvet Rouge from Arte Profumi. Velvet Rouge is my late present to myself for getting my new job 4 months ago, and Anima Dulcis is my contribution to the local economy – I bought it from a New Zealand shop.
And I’m saving both of those for the evening and going to work in Trayee – actually leaving the house for work!!!

Commando today and struggling with being angry at someone. The sun is shining bright and I am still in a bad mood. I kinda wanna just travel far off somewhere but I just don’t have the funds.

This town needs to open already, I have way too much time to think, ugh. But I can’t even think straight enough to make thought out decisions. Frustrating.

Earlier today I went grocery shopping at my local grocery store. I found refried beans there for the first time in a while. Almost no rice to be seen on the shelves, though. And naturally, I forgot one of the main things on my list that prompted the trip in the first place.

I also had a case of a Most Unfortunate Sneeze during that trip. Right after I had put on my mask, and stepped out of the truck, I felt a warning tickle in my nose. Immediately after that I sneezed… into my mask. And onto my face. The first word out of my mouth was an expletive. The second word was simply “Gross!” I laughed about it a bit later, because what else can you do? ??

SOTD = back in Aromatics Elixir. It also works as a spine-strengthening scent, which is what grocery shopping seems to require these days. ?

When Philadelphia Channel 6 weatherman Adam Joseph said yesterday, “The pollen is out of control,” Mom was already well aware.

I thought, “Mom could have told you that!” She’s been complaining of itchy eyes, especially. We all have allergic coughs and headaches going now and then. Coughing and/or wheezing a little every so often is relatively normal for me when the pollen is flying around.

I think the cloth face masks actually keep some of the pollen out. It must be a bit unnerving for others when I know when it’s an allergy cough, but that’s not clear to people around who don’t know me. But I am keeping the mask on, so a cough or sneeze doesn’t travel.

I did a grocery trip today too, and was pleased to note almost everyone was wearing a mask. But of all things, they were out of tofu! Pout, pout. I saw a video today of the Houston Galleria, crowded and almost no one in masks. Awful! It’s way too hot already for May. My SOTD is HdP 1873 Colette—inspired by Barqs above. It’s perfect for hot weather. Juicy and flowery, fresh.

Since I’m leaving early tomorrow morning heading north to camp for the weekend, I probably won’t participate with the goth theme (will probably do something lighter and more outdoorsy), thus today will be my Friday. :) I am wearing Noir de Noir, which is surely goth in some way haha.
