Happy Josephine Baker Day and World Bee Day. What fragrance are you wearing?
It's not quite as warm as it should be, but all the same I'm in L’Artisan Parfumeur Bucoliques de Provence.
Reminder: 5/22 will be World Goth Day — get your goth on! (Need help? Here's the wikipedia page on Goth subculture.)
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: top image is detail from Farmhouse in Provence, 1888, by Vincent Van Gogh, courtesy of National Gallery of Art, Washington.
I am wearing Histoires de Parfums 1828. I finally bought a small bottle after admiring it and going through two small samples of it.
Robin, you smell great ! Bucoliques de Provence is on my list of bottles I would like to have.
Hooray for a new bottle! ?
Thanks ! New bottles are exciting
*Adds Histoires 1828 to list.*
I hope you enjoy it, if you try it.
I will let you know! Going to do a LuckyScent sample order soon.
It’s on my list too! And will stay there until L’Artisan makes 15 ml bottles again
I am not sure if I ever tried 1828, it sounds lovely.
That would be nice if 15 ml bottles were available.
I first tried 1828 in a small store in my local mall. I kept smelling it all day and enjoying it. I made up my mind that I was going to buy a small bottle, but then the store closed. I ordered sample online, went through it, then finally ordered it from Luckyscent.
Enjoy 1828! Did you get the 60 ml or the 15 ml, when you say small?
15 ml. The bottle is very small and very cute
I have seen them and yes, they are cute.
I have 1725 but 120 ml size
I just looked it up, not having tried it. It sounds intriguing–the combination of citrus + eucalyptus is interesting. I have a few of theirs and you’ve given me an idea for my SOTD on Friday! Indeed, for today I think I will look up my bottle of 1873, Colette. Thanks!
I am in Atelier Cologne Rose Anonyme, which I consider Goth-light. It has the right notes for a Goth scent – rose, patchouli, oud – but the overall effect is lighter and softer than you would expect from this scent. Still can be qualified as Goth, I guess.
I am probably going to do something goth light on Friday too.
Goth-light for Rose Anonyme? Yas!
I love Bucoliques, and I adore your choice of picture for today.
I’m wearing the wonderful Duel. After cleaning my fridge last weekend I rearanged my Goutals. I really love this one, it’s just right.
Tea is another batch of lavender oolong. Equally wonderful.
That should be rearrange.
Yep, you smell fantastic too!
The picture is really a perfect match for Bucoliques de Provence.
Yep! It makes me feel homesick. I lived there for a year and I’m missing France really badly right now.
Nonstop rain here, but I’m feeling fine in Anima Dulcis from a small decant from a generous NSTer.
I’ve had this for a while and I’m not sure why I haven’t tried before now. It’s lovely, and not sticky sweet which for some reason I was expecting. It’s more incense on my skin.
I did some liberal spraying, but it’s not a big mouth scent. Very polite, yet delicious and unexpectedly sexy. Kind of like when you meet a complete stranger, make eye contact and feel that low hum and frisson of physical attraction. Delightful?
Smell well and stay safe, peeps!
I remember liking AD when I tried if from a sample. Arquiste is a very good line. My favourite so far is Boutonnière No. 7. But I have only tried 3 or 4 so far.
If you like AD you might also like Akro Dark, another not sweet chocolate scent, which is quite sexy as well.
I’ll have to sample AD one of these days. This one is close enough to Ummagumma that I’m not hankering for a bottle. But, I will finish my little sample and thoroughly enjoy it.
I had a travel size of an Arquiste (I think it was Arquiste?) when they partnered with a clothing store (whose name I REALLY can’t remember!) and was named No. 53…?! Or something along those lines. Poor memory aside, I de remember really enjoying that one as well.
It was Arquiste, and they partnered with J. Crew.
Love that description – want to meet a stranger, make eye contact and feel hum stat!
Ha! It may be the next stranger you encounter.
You smell great, I love Anima Dulcis, wore it to bed last night.
Yes, a perfect bedtime scent!
Jessica McClintock for a little blast of muguet and galbanum.
An important thread for the NST community is this one which pairs Angela Lansbury with teapots: https://twitter.com/Pandamoanimum/status/1259207916403462144
That is a fantastic thread, thanks!
I was just thinking of Jessica McClintock this morning. Do you have a current formulation? Do you know if it’s still wonderful?
I just have a little sample I got off Ebay, so I’m not even sure when it’s from! Sorry I can’t give a current report.
It’s ok. It’s probably my most repurchased perfume, but it’s been years since I’ve smelled it.
lillyjo – I have a bottle of each (new and vintage). The vintage (the label on the bottom has ‘Made especially for Jessica McClintock Inc. San Francisco, CA 94103’) is rounder and smoother, with a more-forward lily of the valley note and incredible staying power.
The new version is a little sharp, herbal/citrus notes are more forward, but it settles down on me after an hour or so and the drydown is still nice.
Regina, thank you, that made my day! The exasperated screaming about Mrs. Potts in the middle is too perfect.
Jessica McClintock was my mom’s go-to all through the 90s! I find lily of the valley challenging personally, but it suited her so well!
Thank you for sharing! Adore Angela Lansbury…icon.♥️
A-mazing! My first professional job in theatre was on tour with Angela in MAME as wardrobe mistress and dresser. That gold spangled jumpsuit was her in costume for the song “It’s Today” and many a night I would be hand stiching those little gold bangles that had fallen off in all the dancing!! She was a wonder and delight, and remains so to this day.
Wow!!! What a cool memory!
So cute! And very well done ☕️
I loved Jessica McClintock back in the day. Never got a bottle, though.
This is one of my favorite cheap thrills.
The thought of Josephine Baker made me reach for Tea for Two, as she was a famous and glamorous smoker – although did anyone famous in that day and age NOT smoke? Ah well! I smell great.
I wore Tea for Two yesterday. Today I’ll wear Bal d’Afrique in honor of Josephine.
Bal d’afrique is lovely
Having a moody morning..
Kids were listening to Cat Stevens this morning, when they got to his song ..if you want to sing out sing out..I became overwhelmed with emotion, escaped to the shower and let myself have a good cry. Who knows where that all came from..exhaustion..frustration….
Then proceeded to let myself eat not one but four pieces of toast with peanut butter and coffee.
SOTD Chanel 1957
Yes! Sing out, cry, eat that toast!! ♥ you!
I will piggy back off of Eat Pray Love
with Eat (toast) Sing, Cry
Glad you got to sing/cry out, it does good.
I know that feeling of being overcome by emotions….music, movies, commercials. Sometimes a good cry is just what is needed. I hope you feel better.☺️You smell great!
It’s hard because you don’t want to cry in front of the kids, so everything does get pent up. Thank goodness for showers.?
So sorry Lovestosmellgood!
I do think everything sad is sadder when there are little kids.
But everything happy is happier with little kids, so hoping the days look up.
You are right
Going to find some bee video for bee day for the kids! That should put everyone in a good mood.
Guerlain has very cool bee videos, lets see if the kids will listen to a bit of French.
Music’s power to stir emotion without words oftentimes is amazing, it happened to me the other day but of course now I can’t remember the song. I’m glad you were able to give in to it and cry. And I’ll always believe in the power of peanut butter. Hugs!
We must be weepy twins this morning. Hubster played Over the Rainbow by Iz, so wistful and beautiful. I got teary eyed.
Good for you, letting it out. We’re all better off that way! ❤️
ah, that was my wedding song. I walked down the aisle (though we were in a park) to someone where over the rainbow.
Ahhh, synchronicity! I was supposed to make this comment today!
Our reception song was the Carole King song “I’m so glad it was you” from the You’ve Got Mail soundtrack. I knew my husband a full 12 years as a friend before we even started going out. After that, we got married within 8 months, though!
ah so sweet, so sweet. I listened to it earlier today.
My dear friend got married in Hawaii 10 years ago today.
She danced to this with her father after the ceremony.
Now her new baby is 13 weeks old and I still haven’t been able to see him and hold him.
I love that version best of all, makes me cry every time.
You smell beautiful today. Hooray for toast and peanut butter. And, a good cry when it is needed.
Crying is a wonderful release valve.?♥️
hugs, thank you
Every time I listen to Cat Stevens sing ” oh very young ones what will you leave us this time, we are only dancing on this earth for a short time” I am filled with joy and sorrow at the same time. Every decade since it was written and recorded brings nuances that weren’t there.
I could weep today from not sleeping last night.
SOTD is Chinatown again. It does bring a sense of spring summer to me and it is a beautiful day here in sunny So Cal.
That song just hits me in the emotional gut every time.
That one and Fleetwood Mac’s Landslide. Both get me.
Landslide! Yes, me too, and it seems like there’s a live version out there that is especially emotional.
landslide. Don’t get me started.
Cat Stevens can bring out both joy and sadness. He mostly makes me smile. But lots of emotions in his music.
I have got my air pods in and am listening to Tea for the Tillerman and Buddha and the Chocolate Box as I work.
And of course, I remember every single word.
((lovestosmellgood)) sending loads of virtual hugs your way today!
I’m on the same track – having a big girl boo-hoo is so cathartic.
I don’t know if I should mention it, but recently, I’m quite taken with PB, nutella, and Marshmallow fluff sandwiches…
This is quite the dangerous combination. I will be (even more) fluffier than normal, in no time!
Oh my! That sounds like the cure for my illness. Shockingly, I’ve never had Nutella. On some level, I’m very afraid if it’s dark and creamy power to bamboozle and take over my entire being. I fear being transformed into a Nutella zombie?♀️
I am very careful to purchase the smallest jar possible lest I eat the entire jar in one sitting.
Music always moves our emotions forward, whatever they are, that’s its job. Let your emotions have their way (they will any how), and you will feel the stronger for letting go.
I had an enormous bagel and a block of cheese with my coffee this morning….fear not, we are in this together.
Music and fragrance in equal measure bring all the emotions.
Hugs to you LTSG. I know that many of us are feeling this way right now.
Oh, biggest hugs to you. I hope your day got better with the bees.
Oh boy, I’m so sorry! I’m right on the verge myself. Sending calming thoughts you way…
I associate that whole Cat Stevens album with a period in my life with great change and personal growth.I think I saw Harold and Maude 3 times when it was in the theaters and those songs were such a huge part of the film and my life.Music has that wonderful power to trigger deep emotions unexpectedly and transport us like a time machine.
After three days of rain and gray skies, I woke to a beautiful blue sky and sun.?
I’m in 10 Corso Como and headed out for a massage in a bit. I have to get some decants in the mail this afternoon and have a question for all of you. When they ask if your package has anything liquid including perfume, do you say yes or no? I know it has to go ground if I say yes and I feel like that takes longer…
I’ve gone both ways. I don’t feel good about lying, but I think the risk of perfume being dangerous is about nil. Ground takes longer and is more $$. Interested to hear how others answer this.
I’ve gone both ways too. I’m a terrible liar and it makes me physically uncomfortable.? Usually if it’s a handful of samples I say no, but say yes to decants.
I say yes. I love the post office and want to follow their rules. And perfume packages are not urgent, as much as we may feel that way at times!
Sage advice Regina, thank you!?
I have done both. For me if the line is long I go to the self kiosk and if its not I go and to the teller
I’ve done both too. For awhile the post office lady recognized me and knew exactly what I was mailing.?
I say yes. I’ve learned through bad luck and karma, that I can never get away with anything. Lol.
Lol, good advice, that karma can be a real ?
If it’s 10ml or less, I say no. If it’s a full bottle I say yes. There’s some small amount that’s ok or used to be, I looked it up a long time ago, but I don’t remember how much it was, less than 10ml I’m sure.
I like that plan.
That sounds like a nice middle ground
My Post Office doesn’t ask, so I don’t tell. I really think our little decants, even bottles, are getting caught up in regulations that weren’t made for them. I have had ground packages arrive super late, with the package looking worse for wear to boot! Add hot temps to that…plus, most of my perfume purchases don’t ship ground, either.
I wonder too about how the postal regulations for perfume came to be. It would be interesting to find out
I think most of the mailing restrictions are a result of 9/11.
I always say yes because I’m a terrible liar. BUT! I have had postal workers ask if it was less than an ounce, which I generally is, and they said that was fine. So. I think it depends to some extent on the person working that day…
That’s good to know about the less then ounce discretion they have
I say “no” if I am sending perfume samples.
I lie like a rug baby!
If the PO clerk asks further, I just say they are decorative glass, which is kinda/sorta/maybe true/not true.
I am pleased to see that the tumblr Goths Up Trees is still around! I think I read about it here on NST a number of years ago.
Another good fragrance for Goth Week would be ELDO Eau de Protection.
I’m not finding that, but I just remembered that I have some genuine Indonesian patchouli essential oil in the it for the Anima Vinci perfume class I did a couple of weeks ago. The concentrated oil smelled very different from what we usually think of as patchouli, and it lasted on the scent strip for days. I think I’ll renew the scent strip later to contemplate during the rest of Goth week.
Still around, still active and still getting submissions! Very nice.
I really admire that she still finds entertaining and appreciative things to say about these photos.
Perfume class, you say? Can you tell more? I did Anyas years ago and am(really mean should) refreshing myself,
Learning will make my brain not as mushy. And a wee more motivated.
Thanks in advance!
I’m trying to work with more of my discover sets, which I have been neglecting. Today I’m wearing Besame Mucho by Art Meets Art.
I love discovery sets! One thing that keeps me from exploring new brands is indecision over which samples to order, and discovery sets remove that obstacle.
I loved that discovery set. Like a Virgin limited edition was my favorite, smelled like orange sweet tarts to me.
I’m happily wearing Dryad again today, and (apparently) celebrating World Bee Day by wearing some Bombas socks, which have a little “Bee Better” inscription on the inside front of the ankle. The inscription isn’t why I bought them or wear them – I bought them because they donate a pair for every pair sold, and I wear them because they feel really good on my feet. No affiliation, of course, other than that they’re touching me most days now.
I love my Bombas socks, SheriG. They are great to put a ton of moisturizer on your feet first and wear around house all day. They were also perfect for safari last summer.
What a great idea – I’m going to try that (the moisturizing, not the safari)!
Bombus is the genus name for bumble bees. ?
Thank you! That explains their logo too (the sock people, not bumble bees).
I soo wanted to love Bucoliques de Provence (partly for the bottle and beautiful label) but we didn’t click. I love Un Air de Bretagne though.
Wearing Hermes Eau de Neroli Dore. The very opposite of anything goth, haha…
It really is the opposite!
Beautiful painting! Like the opposite of goth
Wearing Ouarzazate today, I forgot I have a bottle and found it when looking for swap stuff. I also forgot how much I like it, I feel like lighter scents this week.
Ouarzazate is good stuff and also great for layering.
There are a fair number of Vincent Van Goth paintings floating around the internets, though
I’m in Un Jardin Sur Le Toit today. The morning walk was warm and muggy, which perfectly matched the Hermès.
I’ve got wheat bread to bake and pesto to make. The basil plant is getting leggy, but I don’t have a lot of it, so I’ll be adding parsley and maybe some oregano to punch it up. Fresh herbs, walnuts and Parmesan cheese and olive oil can’t turn out too badly, I hope. I have roasted cherry today in the freezer, so those might go in, too.
Y’all have the best Wednesday humanly possible!
We’re Hermes twins today!
Hey twin! ?
Sounds nice! I should revisit the Hermes jardin collection.
Which do you prefer?
Sur Le Nil, but Mediterranee is also lovely.
Sounds delicious — enjoy!
Just realized…that should be ‘roasted cherry tomatoes.’ ?
Are you making bread in a breadmaker, or in your oven?
Oven. I had a bread machine years ago but didn’t care for it so much. The texture of the bread was never quite right.
Wearing Gucci Memoire for a sunny and dry day. I just ordered my son’s graduation present. A new desk and chair. It’s not terribly exciting but I figured it is something he will have for a long time. I hope he likes it.
Congrats to your son!
aww! Congrats to your son!
I hope he likes it too! Congrats to your son!?
He’s such a sweetheart, I think he will. Thanks!
You smell great ! Congratulations to your son !!
A wonderful milestone for your Sinn, you must be so proud. I think the gift you chose is a very good idea.
that’s a wonderful gift! Congrats!
autocorrect your son
I got it. Thanks Aurora!
Congratulations! It’s a milestone!
Truly is. Thanks!
Congrats to your son. Is his school planning any sort of alternative for graduation?
So far, they will do a virtual graduation on YouTube and on their website and on t.v!
Also, I just found out he won the award for basically being the nicest kid!? if I can figure out how to let you guys see it, I will let you know.
That’s the greatest award a kid could win!!! Congrats
That would be great! Congrats mom on raising a great kid. It’s almost like an award for you as well!
How wonderful, congratulations!
How awesome, good for him!
That’s a great gift idea.
Thanks. I think he will be surprised.
Congratulations to your son! I’m sure he will love the desk set. Did you have any luck getting those donuts yesterday?
The line was so long! Like down and around the street long. My son and I decided it wasn’t worth the wait. We stopped at the grocery store and bought a giant cookie instead!
Congratulations to your son! I’m sure he will love the desk set. Did you have any luck getting those donuts yesterday?
Back in the day I got a CD Walkman for my graduation. A new desk sounds great—useful!
Woke up wearing Kyoto and since I am post shower, I am wearing a dab of no 22 extrait. Hopefully today will go a little smoother than yesterday at work. Customers are being butts and coworkers in other departments are being even bigger butts.
Yeah, I don’t love big butts…?
Wearing Bal a Versailles cologne to work (I sit in a room by myself now so who cares) and the way this day is shaping up, boy do I need it.
Curiously I have two colognes of Bal and they smell different… one square glass bottle that I think is 60s/70s that smells more amber-animalic, and a white spray bottle with gold lettering of indeterminate origin that is more powdery-leathery. It’s the white spray bottle today.
Dawn is the BaV expert. Maybe she will know.
It was crazy busy at work past 3 days, i did not even have time to read some of the comments here. ?
But weekend has started wooohooooo ??☀️??
Tomorrow is a public holiday and friday was my day off anyways…
I work fulltime = 36 hours at my organisation, but i mostly work 4 days x 9 hours )
I am wearing Bandit for a summery spring day.
Have a great early weekend!
I had a decant of Messe de Minuit, so i wore it today. To my nose it smells of citrus toilet cleanser with a very dry incense. I dont like it at all.
Oh, my, that is not an enticing description!
I’ve read that it has been severely reformulated. Wonder if yours is pre- or post?
Quite busy since yesterday. Between crazy work and my doggie that is still very sick I don’t have time to breathe. Thanks everyone for your good wishes for my dog’s recovery during the past couple of days. I hope he eventually bounces back. I am desperately looking forward to the long holiday weekend.
Wearing Guerlain AA Pamplelune and burning a very nice mini Nest Grapefruit candle sent to me by a generous NSTer friend. Both scents are very relaxing and comforting.
Temps are trying to warm up, but still cool for this time of the year. Patiently waiting for summer to arrive! ???
Sending healing vibes to your doggie!
Good health wishes to you and your pup. I hope this weekend is just as relaxing as you need it to be, and that today is less frantic than you expect.
Thank you, Sistine! ?
Hopefully you and the pupper will have a relaxing long weekend.
Thank you, Lillyjo! Hope so too from the bottom of my heart!
Hugs to you both! And time to break out those super-calming perfumes…
Thank you, Jalapeno. Those super-calming perfumes is exactly what I need to wear now. Hoping he gets better soon.
Sending more good juju for your pup’s quick recovery!
Belatedly sending you good vibes for your pup!
Thank you! He looks a bit better today. Let’s hope!
SSS Bee’s Bliss for the World Bee Day. This is probably my favorite SSS perfume.
Later today I’ll add a spoon of honey to my tea.
Our office is going to be closed until at least July 15th – so, it’s almost 2 more months of working from home. I’m not sure how I feel about it.
I feel like an awful person saying this but bees are the bane of my existence in the summer. They won’t let me sit in the garden and I start really resenting them because it’s only warm enough to be outside here a couple of months of the year.
I know though how important they are ecological.
Bees seem to be very temperamental. We live in an area that is Shangri-La for bees, large gardens, old trees etc so there are always swarms of bees “moving in”. My neighbour across the street always gets an a-hole swarm – stinging her dog and pet tortoises, moving into her roof. We had a swarm in our water meter (accidentally discovered by my husband forcefully opening the cover for the meter reader! Only one bee sting, thankfully) and decided to have it moved by a bee keeper into a hive and onto our property. In the two years since, I have once accidentally stepped on one hiding in the grass, but kids and dogs routinely stand RIGHT IN FRONT of the hive, “watching the bees”, and the bees just go about their business. It seems we have a very civilized bunch!
Wowza, that’s alot of bee! I think I have to work on myself to not be so afraid of them
Twins! I finally found my decant. I worked from home for 4 months one year, it was fine. But I’m very introverted.
World Bee Day? Has anyone seen the documentary Honeyland? Watched it about a week ago and immediately wanted to watch it all over again. It is that good. It is a message inside a parable framed as a documentary. It helped that I was at the time working on transcripts of oral histories from Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan (Honeyland takes place in North Macedonia–so not exactly next door, but similar terrain–which also brings me to my all time favorite podcast–I’m on the fourth of nine episodes of Dolly Parton’s America, which also has some exploration of mountain life that has echos in Honeyland).
ANYWAY! I’m in Ambra Aurea from a decant. Love love love this one. But when I was in the shop, the full bottle I sampled didn’t move me. Not sure if it was my nose or that the bottle in the shop genuinely smelled different—but I wound up buying something else.
Honeyland was good.
I did not see Honeyland, but loved Dolly Parton’s America.
Not goth but smelling springy in AA Jasminora.
Speaking of goth though I just read a modern gothic detective:crime novel by Elly Griffiths, who series several here recommended. This is a stand-alone novel by her called Stranger Dairies
I started the Dr. Ruth Galloway series by her based on springpansy’s recommendation and am on book 3 and loving it. The characters are great and I am totally invested. The plot sometimes has occasional Scooby Doo moments but I let those go b/c of the love for the characters and great storytelling.
I will add this one to my list to read as well.
I have the first book in her series coming soon! What’s a Scooby Doo moment?
Kind of evil/unbelievable characters introduced who turn out to the be the villain to take the fall but mysteries need those characters too to be fair…sometimes it can feel a bit forced/obvious though.
First, since a few of you enjoyed the Uniqlo x Marimekko top I wore yesterday, I agree that it looks more expensive than it is ($19.90). It is 100% cotton, a very soft cotton, and it seems to be well-made. These were my first purchases from Uniqlo because I don’t really like to buy fast fashion anymore, and I assumed their sizing was designed with only thin people in mind, as is usually the case (see H&M, Zara, etc.). Anyway, I also bought the black and white big circles that Calypso mentioned liking and both color options of this print: https://www.uniqlo.com/us/en/women/uniqlo-x-marimekko?quickView=428511
Today I’m doing goth in Andrea Maack Coven. Oh, and the meeting I was nervous about yesterday went very well!
Lovely top! I have Marimekko bedding that I bought more than two decades ago in Germany and recently brought back to the states with me (since the comforters are also from Germany). You will look great!
Thanks! I already have all four of those shirts I’d orderd (placed in two separate orders to make sure I liked fit and quality before ordering more). This was my fun budget spring clothes shopping in lieu of being able to do any in-person shopping.
I’d love Marimekko bedding one of these days. I’m a print fanatic.
Also very nice! But the other one is very, very nice!
I don’t buy fast fashion anymore either but these days, I would say do whatever brings a smile to your face…
I have a Marimekko duvet cover. It was my first adult household item splurge, and I’ve never regretted it.
Oh, I’m excited for you! And I love both color options in the other patterned shirt. Well done!
That pattern in the link I posted today is the reason I ordered from Uniqlo in the first place! I’m a sucker for fruit prints especially strawberry, so I’m crazy about the two shirts. After that success, I decided to order the two circle options.
That shirt is adorable! How do the sizes run?
I think they’re pretty true to size. I ordered on the large size for what I normally wear because I wasn’t sure how they cut their clothes (slim or not). Since it’s a boxy cut, I decided to wear it a little oversize so it doesn’t get bunchy around my curves. So, I got what I wanted.
Bruno Fazzolari au dela, from a sample. But I also put a tiny spritz of Songes on one hand and that is dominating big time! Poor au dela, I’m not sure what you smell like.
Robin, I love your SOTD. I had a sample of Bucoliques once that came in a freebiemeet sample pack and fell in love. I recently bought Haute Provence by Nicolai as a substitute but I think Bucoliques is different enough I still need it….
Bucoliques is a lot softer and sweeter. Cologne Haute Provence is quite a green and rustic lavender. I love and own both but I don’t find them to be that similar at all.
Bucoliques reminds me a bit more of Bvlgari au Thé bleu.
songes…hmm..you can come sit next to me.
I need it too, and I’m almost out.
Love that Van Gogh.
I am going through sample sets I never used up and am sampling Lady Vengeance and Mad Madame from JHAG today.
I wanted to point out a feature that is new-ish to Fragrantica when they updated their site in the last several months…if you look up a perfume house and click on Advanced Filter, it brings up Notes on the left hand side and you can click on Vanilla ? (or whatever note/notes you are interested in) and it will limit the list of perfumes to those w/ that note which is super helpful if you are looking to prioritize vanilla over all other things like me. ? I was able to pick out the 2 samples above using the filter to make sure they have vanilla over their lesser non-vanilla counterparts. So if you have samples and are in the mood for vanilla, iris or musk, etc. this filter is helpful to pick the right one to make the day great.??
Thanks for the tips. Any winners among the JHAGs you’re sampling?
Lady Vengeance is nice but wouldn’t need a full bottle. I saw they have a new one out called Lipstick Fever and I do like the color of that bottle.?
Wow! Great tip. Thanks for sharing!
I’m sad today. Bertie Wooster’s vet visit resulted in the diagnosis of an aggressively malignant tumor. There is no treatment. He’s home now, not in pain and I will keep him here until the end. No perfume is comfort enough, but Slowdive is helping a little.
I’m so sorry to hear that diagnosis but glad he is not in pain and comfortable at home. Big hugs to you.
I’m sorry. Pets are such a big part of one’s life.
I am so very sorry, Foxbins. This is really hard. Sending hugs to you and Bertie Wooster. Thinking of you.
Poor Bertie Wooster. Sending hugs and comfort.
So sorry for your sad news…lots of love to you both.
Poor Bertie, be strong for him
I am so sorry, sending hugs!
Foxbins, I’m so sorry to hear that. Hugs to you and Bertie Wooster.
Oh gosh I’m so sorry
Oh no. Sending hugs… I’m so glad your Bertie isn’t in pain, and I hope all Bertie’s remaining time is good time spent with you.
I’m so sorry foxbins
I’m so sorry to hear that.
My sympathies, foxbins.
Sending you a hug, foxbins, and sending Bertie Wooster soft, gentle pets (in whatever his favorite place is) and some languid, slow eye closes.
Oh no! I’m so sorry. He’s so lucky that you adopted him! You give him such good care and abundance of love. T-Rex and I wish Bertie and you peace and comfort.
I am so sad and sorry for this bad news. I just went through this with my Dusty and it’s very very hard. I’m sure you will spoil him and treasure the time together. Remember, he doesn’t know there is something hanging over his head. He is happy to be with you. Take lots of pictures. I treasure mine.
Oh my, I am so very sorry. Sending you both vibes and hugs as you prepare for this transition.
Hugs to you and Bertie both, foxbins.
Love to Bertie and you.
Of course you are sad today. I am so sorry to hear this.
So sorry to hear about Bertie’s diagnosis, foxbins. Hugs.
I’m very sorry, foxbins. Sending you both hugs.
Oh, I am so sorry.
Awww, so sorry to hear that about Bertie Wooster. Sending you comfort and good vibes.
Sending you my thoughts and well wishes for Bertie Wooster.
Eau de Memo.
That is a great scent.
I was wearing Eau d’Hadrien all day, the first time this year and when it faded I applied TM Miroir des Joyaux which is an interesting and enjoyable take on Angel. It’s a good thing I adore aldehydes because they’re front and centre in that scent.
Non-goth in OJ Champaca. I wish this lasted longer, because I love the initial blasts of this.
Will likely move to Insolence or Sous le Toit because I associate violets with Goth…the overly romantic, lace and leather kind.
Oh! And we hit a record on sandwiches made yesterday. Not quite 1200. We had a few more people show, which was great. We can still maintain good distance. Team PB&J lost in a close one to team turkey & cheese.
Wow. That’s a LOT of sandwiches!
1200–wow! Seems a bit unfair though, if Team Turkey & Cheese just has to slap slices on bread while PB&J has to dip and spread.
Correction it’s Miroir des Secrets I was wearing but I also have Joyaux which is completely different.
Smelling great, either way!
Thank you Lillyjo, I remember that you have Joyaux too, it was such a good series, I wish we had all of them.
Wearing Slowdive–which seems appropriate for World Bee Day–while sheltering at home on my 25th anniversary.
Happy Anniversary, Liza! Hope you enjoy the day despite the shelter-in-place order. ???
Happy Anniversary ?!
Happy Silver Anniversary! Congratulations! ✨???
Had a horrible day at work today. There is a person that I work with tangentially, she has nothing to do with me, but is a manager of staff that I depend on to do my work and she just makes everybody miserable. Which brings me in conflict with her, especially now that everybody is stretched thin and people are fragile. Rant over.
Scentless, luckily, so no bad connotations.
Every work place seems to have one of those. I hope tomorrow is better!
I hope you can avoid her completely for the rest of the week, and that tomorrow is a much better day.
Hmm. Sounds surprisingly familiar!
Yesterday I had a manager asking me to do hours of work to help her get ready for a meeting. She has no idea how much time stuff takes. If she had to do the work herself she would have asked me 2 weeks ago.
Hope tomorrow is better for you!
I’m wearing my new scent, Iris des Champs by Houbigant, today. Shout out to Lucas for bringing it to my attention. It was fairly inexpensive so I blind bought it after he mentioned it recently. I am really happy with it. A super soft elegant Iris stealth scent. LOVE!
I haven’t read comments since last week so now to catch up.
Tell me more about this Iris perfume?
It’s very understated and elegant. A soft Iris skin scent. It’s creamy, a little musky iris, pink pepper, rose, pear, LOTV, ylang. Very good for daytime wear.
Thank you for this mini review. I has been on my sample list for years.
Sometimes I just want something with a low wattage. It stays close to the skin but it is present for several hours.
I’d be happy to send a decant if you’re in the US? It may take a while but please contact me at l lombardi underscore 4 2 at the hawt male.
You are very kind, but we are on different continents.
But I can easily get a sample here, it is just something else is always higher on my list.
Yay! Glad it is a winner!
That sounds like a perfect perfume for the times.
I know you struggle with Iris so you are very sweet to say that. ?
I really like No. 19 and AG Heure Exquise, so there’s hope for me yet.
I took the Bee World Day theme literally: SOTD is To Bee, by Roxana Illuminated Perfume. It does have honey overtones but it avoids any cliche vanilla sweetness and instead goes for botanical muskiness, like an inside of a bee hive, with a beautiful clover note.
SOTD–MFK Aqua Universalis Forte…the opposite of goth. I smell so fresh and crisp.
Went to Trader Joes, but the line was waaaay tooo long so I did a Wegman’s run instead. Not as many of the items I wanted, but less crowded more spread out in the store was good. Now I have some fresh fruit and veggies for a bit.
I am jealous — still not going to stores here, and getting produce delivered is NOT satisfactory. But we are starting to get veggies from the garden. Had grilled asparagus tonight, and hope to be harvesting lettuce and spinach soon.
Bee bees bees! I love bees. My masters research was looking at how many different males bumble bee queens actually mate with. After that, I got to do some amateur beekeeping as part of my job in California. We have beautiful carpenter bees in my backyard and my dog thinks it’s the best thing in the world to chase them as they fly.
Ironically, I don’t really like honey. And perfumes with honey notes smell terrible on me – just too overwhelming and almost rank.
Today I wore Philosykos in the morning. It wore off and I switched to What Would Love Do from Lush.
Sistine please avoid reading my bee hating rant earlier! I am cowering in shame
Honey does not smell good on me either.
I love the big fat bumble bees that can barely get airborne! Kind of like the C135’s of insect world?
Yess OMG those are the best!
Just look at these bee butts ??
So what is the answer? Inquiring minds want to know.
Ok I know bees matter but did not know anybody thought carpenter bees were anything but a nuisance. I am suitably chastened.
SOTD = Chanel Coco Noir Parfum
Perfect juice (rose patchouli)
In other news and oh boy, this is other news ?!
Shortly after 5pm yesterday, as I was finishing up work, I heard scraping, screeching, tearing and then silence. I opened the front door to investigate and here’s what I saw – next door neighbor’s boyfriend’s car was on top of the sidewalk and my neighbor looking like this ?. Then the boyfriend slowly (!) backed up the car and off the sidewalk. The front of the car was accordioned (it’s an older heavier car, thank goodness) and the siding by their kitchen was torn off, along with some vegetation. I asked my neighbor if she wanted me to call the property management company (yes, had to leave a voicemail and a text) and asked if the boyfriend is ok (yes, “he said he’s okay” and indeed, he was ambulatory). I am NOT even going to speculate how it happened. My neighbor and her boyfriend are in their late 80s. Note: This is not the neighbor for whom I grocery shop. Oy!
That’s crazy about the neighbor. Glad they were ok!
We were almost twins today. Great goth pick!
Oh that’s awful
Gosh, I’m glad no one was injured!
And will let you know this is the way everyone in Florida drives! ?
Yikes! Your story reminds me of another I read on a different blog yesterday. The poster lives on a twisty, windy rural road, that now has more speeders since the pandemic. Driver, speeding/texting not paying enough attention in general, spins out on a curve, clips a fire hydrant, and winds up facing the wrong way, half on the road, half in a ditch. The poster, hearing the commotion, runs out of his house to see if driver’s ok.
The driver screamed at him because he wasn’t wearing a mask!! Oy, people!
??? ZOMG! That could have ended SO badly. I glad that everyone is OK.
Oh my goodness! That’s crazy! Glad everything ended up ok.
Our postal services have finally caught up with the backlog of online shopping when all the shops were closed, and my two non-essential perfume purchases arrived yesterday. I bought Arquiste’s Anima Dulcis and Velvet Rouge from Arte Profumi. Velvet Rouge is my late present to myself for getting my new job 4 months ago, and Anima Dulcis is my contribution to the local economy – I bought it from a New Zealand shop.
And I’m saving both of those for the evening and going to work in Trayee – actually leaving the house for work!!!
Enjoy your new bottles!
You must be so glad to get back to some sort of normality! I’ve never tried Velvet Rouge but I’m familiar with Anima Dulcis and I think it’s beautiful.
Commando today and struggling with being angry at someone. The sun is shining bright and I am still in a bad mood. I kinda wanna just travel far off somewhere but I just don’t have the funds.
This town needs to open already, I have way too much time to think, ugh. But I can’t even think straight enough to make thought out decisions. Frustrating.
I think that many people are feeling similarly right now. Take care.
Sorry Omega! Hope tomorrow is better.
Earlier today I went grocery shopping at my local grocery store. I found refried beans there for the first time in a while. Almost no rice to be seen on the shelves, though. And naturally, I forgot one of the main things on my list that prompted the trip in the first place.
I also had a case of a Most Unfortunate Sneeze during that trip. Right after I had put on my mask, and stepped out of the truck, I felt a warning tickle in my nose. Immediately after that I sneezed… into my mask. And onto my face. The first word out of my mouth was an expletive. The second word was simply “Gross!” I laughed about it a bit later, because what else can you do? ??
SOTD = back in Aromatics Elixir. It also works as a spine-strengthening scent, which is what grocery shopping seems to require these days. ?
That is gross and annoying, but also rather funny. I have nose + mask issues as well. ?
I figure if that is the worst thing I have to deal with this week, I’m doing pretty good.
I’m laughing with you, jalapeno ?
Sometimes humor is gross, isn’t it?
Poor you. My allergies are awful right now too.
Massive amounts of tree pollen floating around here. I think that might have contributed to the Unfortunate Sneeze.
Yep, my car color is olive black but right now it just looks yellow. ?
When Philadelphia Channel 6 weatherman Adam Joseph said yesterday, “The pollen is out of control,” Mom was already well aware.
I thought, “Mom could have told you that!” She’s been complaining of itchy eyes, especially. We all have allergic coughs and headaches going now and then. Coughing and/or wheezing a little every so often is relatively normal for me when the pollen is flying around.
I think the cloth face masks actually keep some of the pollen out. It must be a bit unnerving for others when I know when it’s an allergy cough, but that’s not clear to people around who don’t know me. But I am keeping the mask on, so a cough or sneeze doesn’t travel.
I did a grocery trip today too, and was pleased to note almost everyone was wearing a mask. But of all things, they were out of tofu! Pout, pout. I saw a video today of the Houston Galleria, crowded and almost no one in masks. Awful! It’s way too hot already for May. My SOTD is HdP 1873 Colette—inspired by Barqs above. It’s perfect for hot weather. Juicy and flowery, fresh.
The lack of masks in crowded public places is appalling. I think we know who to blame for that…?
And yet, we are not saying. Thank you.
Stores can have the weirdest outages lately… no rhyme or reason to them.
Rather cold for this time in May, as Robin noted. This morning, I enjoyed a “room fragrance” of real heliotrope. This evening, I decided to see if L’Artisan Voleur de Roses struck me as somewhat goth. I think so.
It was definitely sweatshirt weather for me today.
Yes, I had a hoodie and my mid-weight fluffy jacket on when I was outside.
Wearing Baie Rose 26 on another beautiful sunny and breezy day. Forgot how lovely this perfume is.
You smell wonderful!
Thank you Glannys!
Started out the day with Eau d’Hadrien. Later on, I added some Iris 39 to counteract this crazy day!
You smelled excellent all day!
A very late post today. I think I started out the day in Cuir de Lancôme and then MDCI Chypre Palatin and now Rogue Tabac Vert (bottle arrived today, plus samples of his two latest scents).
My Mom visited today (social distanced in the yard). She brought us tons of groceries from Trader Joe’s and Costco. We’re insanely stocked up!
You have a nice mom!
Yes, I do! Our household is also composed of myself and my 85 yo Grandma (Mom’s Mom) and she really wants to keep us safe.
They hugged today with a sheet between them and masks on. I video taped. Totally made me cry.
Since I’m leaving early tomorrow morning heading north to camp for the weekend, I probably won’t participate with the goth theme (will probably do something lighter and more outdoorsy), thus today will be my Friday. I am wearing Noir de Noir, which is surely goth in some way haha.
