Monday scent of the day 5/11

Posted by Robin on 11 May 2020 281 Comments

It's Monday, if it matters. RIP Jerry Stiller. What fragrance are you wearing?

I’m wearing Marni Rose over Tauer Rose Delight.

Reminder: 5/15 is the International Day of Families. Name your favorite fragrance family, and wear one or more fragrances in that family, OR, make up your own fragrance family (like, say, wood pudding), define it for us, and wear the best example of that family.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I have not decided yet what family I’m going to do this week. I am wearing a gorgeous summery floral: La Haie Fleurie. One of my favourite jasmines and Elléna creations.

When I started down the rabbit hole, I depended a lot on Fragrantica’s group designations to decide if a fragrance was worth trying. I found that I liked many fragrances in the Floral Woody Musk group, so that is what I am concentrating on this week. First up is Dame Passion Fruit, Orange Blossom & Vetiver. I was able to thunk a sample of this, and I like it well enough to want a decant.

Peanut butter is one of the greatest foods ever. Imagine if it was rare and expensive, like caviar, people would have fancy parties with peanut butter on saltine crackers lol.

We ran out of bananas, no PB/Bananas on toast today.
I am trying (unsuccessfully) to be good. It’s not working well. In my attempt to clean out the fridge and freezer, I found a few gluten-free sticky toffee puddings frozen from last Christmas.

Of course, I had to eat one to ensure they were still ‘edible’…

I try to be good also, but I have no will power when it comes to bread. I at least try to get in all my carbs in the afternoon and occasionally have a pasta dinner in the evening.

That’s interesting. I’m only going to the grocery store weekly and to take care of my mom so I’ve quit wearing makeup unless I’m seeing people on Zoom. My breath under my masks makes my face sweat so why bother….perfume is a must, tho. Obviously.

My make up is usually very light and simple. These days I am letting my skin fully rest and I only wear a bit of moisturizer in my face after I take my daily shower. My skin is grateful about it. I can see the difference.

It is fresh, sharp and buttery, like the flower. I usually have problems wearing white flower perfumes. Gardenias have not been the exception, especially because they are blended mostly with tuberose. The Dame Gardenia smells just like the flower, which I like a lot. I have been wearing it very often this season. If you want to try it let me know. I have a full bottle and can send you some either now or later.

Woke up in Hedonist Iris today. It smells like a cross between no 19 Poudre and Infusion d’Iris. Not exactly hedonistic to my nose. Wearing a dab of Miss Dior original today. My mother was really happy with her smart alec mug and truffle chocolates yesterday. Next week is her birthday and that is when she gets her big gifts.

After a weird weather day yesterday, we are back to sun today, but cool.
I’m going to do a week of musk, starting out in Le Labo Musc 25, thunked my sample. I do like it, but for the price I think Over the Musk is better.
Our rhododendron bushes sadly started dropping their flowers this weekend. They were so full and beautiful this year that several people walking by on the sidewalk in the past couple of weeks stopped to comment. They didn’t bloom at all last year, I think they were making up for lost time.

I haven’t chosen a group for the week, but I’ve been craving citrus lately.

    today:
    Fragrance – Bulgari The Vert
Fragrance family (according to fragrantica) – citrus aromatic
It’s a sunny antidote to a gray, cool day. It’s wearing off quickly on my skin, so I might spray my clothes, or maybe I will shift to Ormonde Jayne Osmanthus

I couldn’t figure out what perfume mood I was in this morning and luckily my eyes fell on a sample of Lush 25:43 in the baggie that holds my samples that are half full or less, meaning it’s time to use them up. So that’s what I’m wearing, and I did finish off the sample. I also have some left of this in the long black 9ml bottle. This lemony tonka is hitting the spot.

Now I have Naomi Goodsir Cuirs Velours on left wrist, Memo Moroccan Leather on the right.

If the Naomi Goodsir were half the price, or if they sold smaller bottles, it would be a no brainer. The rum note really comes through though, and while it’s not sickeningly sweet, it’s still sweeter than I’d like for that size and price. There are way sweeter scents out there—sweet is generally not my thing though I have a few in my collection that veer that way—so if the notes appeal, still worth a try.

The Moroccan Leather is very green, resulting in “Ooh, I like this!” followed by “But if that’s the smell I’m going for, I’ll reach for No. 19 first.” Very easy to say no to an FB at $300 full retail, especially when I could get some Cuir de Russie extrait instead. Hi all!

Favorite fragrance family this week? I guess we’re doing two weeks of iris?

Actually, I’m wearing Ostara today so maybe yellow florals week for me. I do prefer them to the more ubiquitous white florals….

Hope y’all are are staying safe and sane.

Sometimes jasmine is a yellow flower, but that is dependent on what else it is hanging out with in the perfume. And I always thought that yellow roses have a distinct difference in how they smell versus other roses.

I decided to do a week of chypre florals. First up is Miss Dior Le Parfum. I don’t know if this is my favorite catagory, but it’s one I feel has matched my personality latley.
Over the weekend I caught my daughter trying to cut her hair. Some might remember her doing so about a year and a half ago, where we ended up having to just shave it all off. A bit of the conversation
Me- taking the scissors ” what did you learn from the last time you tried to cut your hair?!
Her-” that hair grows back give me the scissors!”
    Sigh…

      LOL!

In the 1980’s, when I was 16, I had kinky/curly hair down to my waist. Tried to cut it myself and it went terribly wrong. The day we were to meet my grandparents for dinner, at an Amish restaurant – was the day I decided to shave my head (Sinead O’ Connor style) except for curly bangs in front, and a rat tail down the back. Bangs and tail were dyed purple/blue/pink.

You should have seen the look on everyone’s face when I walked in the restaurant.

I had a variation of this haircut in the early 90’s–long ish on top, worn sticking straight up in a ponytail, rat tail down the back, shaved bald in between, rat tail dyed fun colors.

    It’s oh so good!

In Rosary Brigade news, I sent another passive-aggressive text and perhaps I was innocently judgey. I suggested prayers for some specific people and the leader quickly (and I meant instantaneously) said she will stop naming x and other political people; she will just include a short moment of silence for us to think about whom we want to include in our prayers. Message sent, message received. At the end of the day, God knows our intentions, verbal or otherwise.

I have a bottle of Cuir Amethyst. I lost my cap and the plaque fell off. The packaging really doesn’t match the price.
I might be reading the rosary brigade part wrong, but the leader seems to be being a little stingy about who gets prayers.

Today’s SOTD is Minuit Enchante by Laura Mercier, perfect for today’s cool SF weather and it may rain today.

I’m deciding up what cookies I’ll make for my nurses at UCSF. When I was Covid-19 tested on Saturday, one of the nurses recognized me – “Hey, aren’t you Dr. Ostroff’s patient who brings in all those cookies?”

I may switch gears and do oatmeal/coconut/chocolate chip cookies and banana nut bread (GF). Still deciding as the coconut macaroons are a hit and I want to spoil them a bit…

    Good afternoon Y’all…..

Finally checking with Versace Versence…..such a nice citrus that keeps going all day long!

Sooooooo eager to hit TJ Maxx and Marshalls when they finally open again….I’m hearing the perfume deals are ahhhhmazing! ‘Cause you know, I haven’t bought perfume in sooooo long…. hee hee

Speaking of long time, I bought the 4 new summer Bath and Body Works scents this morning. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME? I don’t have enough skin surface area for all the BBW sprays I already own. I think it’s giving me a hit of dopamine during these stressful times….. :)

I can’t wait to take her to the store when things open up and let her get a few things #enabler

Oh, for me the discount stores always inspire impulsive blind buys, and then I end up thinking, “Gosh, if I’d just used all that money to buy one bottle I really really wanted…” I get all excited in the moment, then regret it later.

The two exceptions to the above were these blind buys: Angel Muse and SJP Stash. Those were wins!

I’m in the dregs of my 1ml sample of Dryad and waiting impatiently for the FB to arrive. Not entirely sure what family Dryad belongs to, really, but on my skin it’s a dry, woody chypre. I’m also not sure what family is my favorite – I lean toward leathers and orientals in cold weather, light citrus-y scents and classic colognes in hot weather, and anything goes (except for musks or BWFs) the rest of the time (which is most of the time around here).

Joining Robin in Marny Rose… I think this qualifies as a spicy rose, which is the category that led me down the rabbit hole… I highly doubt I’m gonna be able to be faithful to this category all week but at least I was for one day

In other perfume news, my friends husband solicited my perfume advice to find my friend her Mother’s Day present – after some back-and-forth, he decided on Franco’s – which she loves! If he had out and out asked me for a suggestion I would’ve told him Joe Malone tuberose Angelica (which I know she would have loved, because I know she likes tuberose, and I know she likes the brand) But We can’t go telling people what to do!

I still go to work every day and wear makeup. I live alone but even on weekends when I am home all day, I still put on makeup and wear perfume. It lifts my spirits, more especially now because all the recreational things I used to do are no longer doable, like going to the gym, meeting up with friends for happy hours, going downtown to places that have live music, going to a restaurant. All the fun in life is gone and only work, cleaning my home and taking long walks are left. I always remember that my mother, in her final stage of lung cancer at the age of 55, lying in her hospital bed in a weakened state of being, and still struggling to put on her makeup every day.

Hang on to the little pleasures, yes.
This too shall pass, and when our lives return to normal yes,it will be different, and not like the “good old days”.But maybe, just maybe,we’ll be a little bit more appreciative of all the things that gives us little shivers of pleasure, and this time around,REALLY take notice to enjoy it all.
My 5 cents on the subject.

I’m wearing Jeux de Peau because @ka_rina. mentioned it above. That also gave me my plan for this week: wear perfumes by SL. I have so many, I could do a month of them, I’m a bit embarrassed to say! But for purposes of narrowing it down, I’m going to try to do non-sweet, non-gourmand, non-fruity ones from tomorrow through Friday. I enjoy the more “standard” or typical ones but think I have enough of the cooler or non-standard ones to do them and savor them this week.
Yesterday we had a VERY nice meeting with Mom out at her assisted living center, with me sitting on the ground outside, Mom inside, my brother and sister-in-law up in Michigan, and all of us talking by Zoom. She was SO happy and looked very good. I’m very glad they arranged it, and also that they’re arranging for everyone out there, staff and residents both, to be tested for Coronavirus very soon.

From Thursday, our lockdown is going to be considerably relaxed. My first destination will be a fabric store, I have so missed looking at dress fabrics. It’s not like I don’t already have enough fabric :)
I’ve been well supplied with perfume as I’m still working my way through everything I have. I’m now on to a Fragonard sample set I bought at one of their little museums in Paris a few years ago. I arranged the box alphabetically, so it’s Etoile this morning, to be followed by Fragonard.

SotAM = vintage L’air du Temps edt
SotPM = vintage Old Spice aftershave cologne

Enjoyed reading everyone’s choices so far today! You fragrance folks are a fun bunch. :D

I’m not sure what my perfume family might be for this week’s project, will give it some thought today while I clean out the perfume cupboard. Got some swaps that need swapping. ;)

Today I’m wearing scents that remind me of my mum and dad. My mother wore L’air when I was very young. She still sometimes gets out her vintage bottle, it’s beautiful. My dad rarely wore scent other than his aftershave. I filched a decant from his old, old bottle of Old Spice. It smells fantastic. I’m looking forward to wearing it this evening, post-shower.

Watched the new-ish Jerry Seinfeld special on Netflix last night. I laughed so hard my sides hurt today. :D :D :D

    Happy Shmunday, shmoopies!

For the first time in over 20 years, I’ve dragged out the sewing machine to make…face masks! I’m upcycling a bunch of old linen/cotton blend placemats that I don’t like and don’t use, and so far, I’ve made 5 masks today. I think I have enough material for 10-12. I have fought the sewing machine, and maybe am winning?

Wearing Botafumeiro, which is gorgeous, but feels totally inappropriate for May. Maybe I’ll do a week of inappropriate or out-of-sync scents.

Oh, interesting with the comparison…do tell once you do it. I only did one load yesterday and I’m glad I waited for the other loads because I just got masks I ordered from Custom Ink — the first batch was crapolla but I can see how useful they can be since they are very portable (and I have 24 of them so I left a bunch inside my car), albeit single ply. The new ones cost 3x more and are triple-ply. The package is in mail quarantine right now.

    Beautiful photo.
    Commando today.
Yesterday I did play with Gaea but needed to layer it with Rose Flash (just a drop) to get the rose to soften. It screeches on me.
I don’t know why this one sometimes smells too much like potpourri on me – I think it is the middle, the rose note. I also think it works best in cooler weather. I am trying to salvage this as it was a blind buy (I am hiding underneath the table now- I know better). I really loved the idea of it.
Anyone have experience to lend on this?

Maybe it’s the wrong time of year or wrong weather for that perfume? I have a few that are season-specific perfumes. They just don’t smell right out of season to me.

I’ve always been a homebody. One of the small pleasures that I have appreciating even more lately is the arrival of spring birds. In addition to our usual assortment, we have three mated pairs of Baltimore Orioles this spring. The past few years, we only had one pair. I also spotted the first hummingbird of the season and a bluebird.

My SOTD was Rose de Siwa.

      Beautiful!

I wish I saw more interesting birds, we just have swarms of brown swallows here… Not that I am looking too hard, but the swallows are very in your face.

Rose de Siwa is the prettiest rose perfume! Definitely pink roses with that one.

Lucky you with all those exotic birds!

Thanks Jalapeno! I wore Rose de Siwa because it is a spring favorite. I wish it would warm up. We had wispy snow flurries last weekend.

So hard to pick a favorite family. I have several I love! We already did iris last week which is a favorite.

Today I’m in Paris-Riviera (so pretty) for a day of telecommuting. I mopped and baked bread while on a teleconference and also worked while sitting on my patio a bit. All in all a good day!

I’m in the same boat… so hard to pick a favorite family or style.
