Tuesday scent of the day 3/10

Posted by Robin on 10 March 2020 213 Comments

Tuesday, National Mario Day, Harriet Tubman Day and International Bagpipe Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Hermès L'Ombre des Merveilles. Tea at the moment is Season's Pick Assam GFOP Organic, from Upton.

Reminder: 3/13 is National Jewel Day...wear your blingiest, most attention-grabbing perfume.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the 18 karat gold teapot "covered in full with finest precious stones one can buy" (1,658 diamonds and 386 rubies plus the 20.70 karat natural ruby on the lid) was made by Milanese jeweler Scavia for Nirmal Sethia of Newby Teas.

That’s how I found most of them except for the ones with the horse mane accord, like Fougueuse.

This one came out later than the others. Colognoisseur really liked it and posted an interesting review. Worth a sniff!

    Good morning Y’all!

Wearing Bruno Acampora Musc, and feeling like this scent has moved to my No 1 spot of favorite scents ever. I’ve been wearing it a ton this week and just can’t get enough of it! Cozy snuggly musk with a hit of dirty patchouli in the background….LOVE IT!

I have a sample of that one after reading many rave reviews and watching Katie Puckrik’s video review, but I think I’m anosmic. I do get a bit of the “mushroom” note when I first apply it, this is another one I’d love to smell on someone else.

        I tried it twice now.

First time I was not really impressed but I had to wash it off too soon (yup trying to keep all the viruses at bay)

So I wanted to give it another try because at first sniff it felt like a Merveilles family member.

I wore it for 2nd time this weekend.
But this time I got ‘generic fresh aquatic with tonka bean’-combo.
And now I know what kind of family member this is. Its the ‘sport’ variant of the merveilles..???(sorry)

I hope to review it next week, but it is true I rarely do reviews anymore so we’ll see if I manage it. But I don’t like it at all. It does not smell like Merveilles, and it does not smell like tea or incense either. “Generic men cologne” was my first thought.

Then again, I have only worn it once!

Hi Robin – I was looking forward to your impression of L’Ombre and thanks for directing folks to mine! I kind of wish they’d stop with the flankers and let Nagel continue to create new scents that aren’t associated with existing lines in the house.

I don’t usually mind the EdM flankers because they do them slowly, but I know what you mean.

Still, I think in general Nagel’s style just doesn’t suit me. I did not really love either of her new scents (Galop was ok, but Twilly leaves me cold), or her Lagune, or Citron Noir, or Rhubarbe, or Merveilles Bleue.

I did like her Hermessences though.

          • viridiaan says:
            10 March 2020 at 3:42 pm

I agree with you regarding her style. The only one I have liked and wear is Rhubarbe Ecarlate. Galop is okay but too pricey – the bottle design is fantastic. I have to try the Hermessences – I suspect that Cardamusc would appeal to me. 🙂

Oh glad you had the same experience. I did not get any incense or tea either and I thought it was me.
        ive worn it twice now.

I agree, ‘generic’ is the right word for this.

Dont know if the new Hermes style fits me.
        Lagune was a disappointment.
Citron noir was like bug spray to me….

I do like edm bleue, but i only crave it when weather is really hot and dry.

SOTD = Wisteria Hysteria, now sadly diminished due to new handwashing regulations…probably have to top it off with one of the decants at work – Do Son? Barkhane? Or copious applications of the Lily of the Valley hand cream?

No cases of CV19 reported in my state but I suppose it is just a matter of time. I have been stocking up like a prepper for a couple weeks now. Just found out there is shelf stable milk available! Once I get some of that, I can comfortably stay at my house for weeks without going out, if I have to. Once I get my spring lettuce started, I will be all set. Growing up, my mom used make the trek from the ranch to town for supplies once every three weeks, so this doesn’t feel too onerous to me at all, except for the lack of fresh milk.

That is sort of the ultimate bling teapot, isn’t it? I wonder how many of them there actually are in the world.

My grocery store has been carrying dried organic milk for a while, and it is good for all sorts of things. i just figured having some of the liquid kind on hand might be nice for a change of pace if we really get to the “three weeks of staying home OMG !!!” stage. 🙂

I remember as a child wondering why my mom seemed to dwaddle in the grocery store, chatting to people, and then dwaddle at the feed store – she was big on us kids not dwaddling, but now I understand she was desperate for adult conversation – adult contact – of any sort…

Musc Nomade, I did manage to find my bottle today.
It’s lovely. Goutal was my first forage into niche and Le Chèvrefeuille my first Goutal purchase.

My interpretation of this community project is to wear scents which are opposite to understated: loud, in your face, with big projection etc.

Today I picked Jul et Mad Nin-Shar. While it is not exacly loud overall, it is a sweet rose with vanilla, oud and patchouli. The opening is almost aggressive, although the fragrance calms down later. Thick and sweet, good for cold weather.

Ostara for me, because there’s a rather springlike dampness to the air today…and Ostara, to me, is a very damp scent.

The husband sniffed and proclaimed it good, but then proceeded to talk more about Eau de Merveilles, which I wore yesterday.

All sorts of hissing and confrontations this morning. Agnes is charging at Hallie…I think it’s a desire to play, but Hallie is just too old and too standoffish for that. Mornings after food seems to be when the new kitty wants to play.

Awww, sounds like new kitty is doing well! But poor Hallie, lol. I had to put my male cat in time out yesterday. He’s been aggressively chasing the little naked and she hisses and growls at him, not liking it. It prompted a wheezing attack so now I’m a little worried about leaving them alone, ugh. He’s acting like an intact tom cat lately.

I’m wearing Stora Skuggan Fantome de Maules today. It’s reminding me a little of Dusita Erawan in that autumnal, damp green, with a warm, lightly sweet, earthy base sorta way. Or maybe even Andrea Maack Coven but mellower.
But mostly I smell like Purell. I went to my weekly palliative care team meeting at an upper east side hospital today and surprised I was able to just waltz on in (I don’t work for them). Only on my way back out did I see them stopping people to ask them if they had a fever or had travelled anywhere.

Elisa P, question for you- I never travel anywhere ever, but at my work I am in constant contact with people that seem to always be traveling to various countries. Is this something to mention to a health care provider if I need to see one?

Can’t hurt to mention it- though medical facilities that are doing some screening are asking about travel history. I know my facility is asking that. Although it’s probably more pertinent if YOU traveled + had symptoms.

Opened up my decant of Tea for Two, and wow!

Brings back fond memories of too many people smoking clove cigarettes in my undergraduate dorm – they smelled so delicious before they were lit! – and drinking tea with my Eastern European grandparents.

Went perfectly with my brekkie of peanut butter banana toast sprinkled with cinnamon, Chaga powder and sea salt.

      Breakfast sounds yum!
Someone asked me last week if I’d been smoking clove cigarettes. The culprit was my Aveda hair texture tonic spray which smells heavily of cloves.

I love the way Aveda hair products smell. In 2005 or around there abouts, they had a line of perfumes, oils and body products that were so spectacular.

I generally like the way their stuff smells, but this stuff can be strong if I use it on dry hair. Mostly, I use it on damp hair and then blow dry a little, which kills the scent. The few times I’ve used it on dry hair, it really competed with my SOTD.

It gets a lot of love in the SotD polls! When I saw it was available in decant for Canada I had to try.

Not sure I’d like it as much in summer, but it’s cold and grey and raining for me today, so it was a perfect antidote to the weather.

Not blingy (not in the mood for Bombay Bling or my Micallef), but I just drained my decant of Gallivant’s Istanbul. Doesn’t break new ground, but a good amber.

Commando at the moment, but I could perhaps dig out my bottle of Micallef Aoud Gourmet – I think it’s the only bottle I have with jewels on it. I don’t love it as much as I used to, though.

I broke down and bought a new PC, and am typing on it at this very moment. Work and life were getting too busy, and the old one was just too slow (have you ever had to wait to see your letters appear on screen, seconds after you are done typing?), too often. Hair pulling.

I missed logging into NST yesterday (I’ve been missing that a lot, lately), but I hope there were lots of you complaining about DST, which just gets harder and harder to deal with every year.

It’s raining here in the desert, though, which is nice. I don’t know if any of you have ever been in the desert post-rain, but the air becomes suffused with the most intriguing and gorgeous scent. Petrichor – the smell after a rain – should be bottled and sold as home spray.

    Happy Tuesday, all!

Sounds gorgeous, that smell! I”m pretty sure I’ve smelled it, but not in the desert. In Switzerland in summer, there are usually some really heavy rains that can also result in a strong “rain” smell.

My jewel scent of the day is the little-known Memoire de l’Amour from Notalgia Collection. Another syrupy rich scent with rose, plum, jasmine, and other fruits. Ripe or even overripe, but gorgeous.

My workplace has just now gone on a recommended work-from-home policy because of the spread of Coronavirus, as has much of the Bay Area by now. Now, my fiance and I are both working from home, but we only have the one office–so he dropped by his office, picked up another monitor, and has set up a secondary office for himself on the dining table. At least we have a couple months’ worth of food in our freezer.

I haven’t stocked up but honestly a) can’t afford to b) why cause myself that much stress lol. What was weird though is that I ordered bottled water from a grocery store, they said, sorry we are out. It’s the panic that concerns me a little. Ppl say they can’t buy tp and stuff..i saw a lady with a cart of hand wipes the other day. It’s like y2k part 2

I can’t afford to stock up either. And unless I set up a garage sale at my house, I am never going to work from home.

I WISH I could say that we stocked up on freezer food because of the virus scare. In actuality, what happened was that we bought a chest freezer some months ago, got excited out of our minds, and went on a massive freezer food shopping spree to fill said chest freezer with yummy and/or healthy foods (“A freezer is more stable and efficient when it’s well stocked!” the fiance argued, not unreasonably). We are treating this semi-quarantine as a good time to reduce our freezer stocks.

But yeah, we happen to be low on toilet paper right now, and goodness knows where we will find more.

I contacted Ouai about a faulty can of their dry shampoo foam I purchased (it kept bubbling out around the seam at the neck, which was not only wasteful but made me concerned the product was contaminated in some way), and they immediately sent me a new can along with a sample vial of their perfume, Melrose Place, which smells exactly like their hair care products. It’s a musky rose that is quite nice but not something I’d purchase, though I’ll use it up.

I have a trial sized Ouai wave spray and find the rose scent to be too overwhelming. But, I guess people really love it so much so that it demanded a separate perfume! But nice on their customer service.

    Coromandel today.
My brother was in Italy and now has to stay off work. He has difficulties to arrange a testing, all lines are blocked…. Hope he will stay healthy.
Our nearby hospital is nearly out of disinfectant and there is nothing to buy on the market. And our health ministry says that Germany is prepared well. What a joke! I hope we will get out of this soon

That teapot is gorgeous, as bling as can be but I find it fabulously OTT.

I’m continuing my Amouage sample journey. Up to today I’ve been impressed by every single one, and a few I love to want more (hello Gold, Jub XXV).
Today’s sample is Fate Woman and this one is definitely not for me. There is one note that comes off downright unpleasant to me, I thought it was narcissus but I loved Au Dela Narcisse.
Now I’m thinking it might be violet leaf. Whatever it is, it is in Fate and it smells like a gas station bathroom filled with mothballs. Yikes!

Wow, that teapot is *really* sparkly.

Nothing yet perfume-wise. Perhaps I’ll go for something citrus-y. Yesterday when it was warm and sunny out, the bees were enthusiastically working on the mahonia flowers. Once it gets regularly warm out, I stop using lavender shampoo and cut down on wearing flowery fragrances outside.

On the one hand, I’m glad we have a good assortment of native pollinators for our flowering plants. On the other hand, I’m not a fan of being around things that can sting when I’m trying to smell the flowers. I don’t want bees and their stinging relatives to come to me to investigate whether I have pollen on my wrists.

My sleeping patterns were so messed up that I’m actually waking up “earlier,” going by the clock. lol.

I’ve been going out for grocery store and big box store trips, but would really rather stay near the house and get some gardening done on warm days. Our “soil” is shale and clay and more shale, so I’m planning on putting some perennials in pots around the front yard. I’ll put annuals in when it’s that season. Last year I grew four kinds of red salvia, to try to attract hummingbirds. I didn’t happen to see any at the salvia, but I saw one at the bee balm in the back yard.

Oh, yes. I planted a butterfly bush years ago, and have tried to grow butterfly weed every so often. I tried pentas one year, and generally end up growing various flowers that butterflies and skippers are interested in. I try to grow a lantana or two every year. Something that I hadn’t planned is that spicebush swallowtail butterflies also like sassafras, and we have several sassafras trees.

The tiger swallowtail butterflies really like tiger lilies and a number of other flowers I grow. The caterpillars of fritillary butterflies eat violet leaves, and we have a ton of wild violets. (Not planned by me.) We see great spangled fritillaries and the smaller ones on the garden flowers.

No bling bling for me today nor will I be blinging in Friday unless I think of something creative. I was seriously considering backing out of my vacation but I powered through and here I am in Houston! Newark Airport was like a ghost town at 8am this morning and the plane was so empty I randomly picked an exit row seat and got the entire row, including across the aisle to myself! 9 people from our group dropped out so we have a nice and small intimate group of 10, including the travel director. I love this size group but wish it was not because of people dropping out due to COVID-19. There were some people wearing masks and most of them were older seniors. While I wore Chanel No.19 EDP this morning, my scent was actually that of my eucalyptus + spearmint hand sanitizer.

I almost had a conniption this morning with the Uber driver. He picked me up from my house, I had carryon luggage (yes!) and when we got to the airport, he asked me if I intended to go to the parking lot. Huh? ??‍♀️

I have enough time for a quick post & run, but will be back later to read comments.

SOTD = Iris Underground absolute oil parfum from Soivohle. Those 4mL bottles are the cutest little things! This is an iris & violet perfume on me, with the iris being on the floral side, not the rooty side. There is something in this perfume that brings to mind rain drops on a bunch of spring flowers, too. It’s been quietly humming along since this morning.

Wearing SL Douce Amere for the second day in a row. That doesn’t happen very often. I originally had on Dior Joy, which I’m liking more since I quit judging it, lol. It faded halfway through the day, and I had the SL in my purse. I’m not sure yet what I will pick for Friday.
