Thursday scent of the day 2/27

Posted by Robin on 27 February 2020 223 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I am still out of town but I'm heading home shortly. I'm also still commando, and I'm still a bit behind on reading the comments.

Reminder: 2/28 will be Unicorn Friday...wear a perfume you suspect no one else (or almost no one else) on Now Smell This owns, or something that you very rarely see worn or mentioned. Suggested by Oakland Fresca.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Not a unicorn at all — the perfume I put on at bedtime last night was Nicolai Fig-Tea. It’s a comfort scent for me.

Today I’ll see what I can find that’s more obscure. :)

Black Cashmere for me today. I’ve eased up on using multiple sprays with this one and now just do one solid spray. It’s my mystery scent as I always feel mysterious when I wear it. Definitely a top 5 scent and the only one where I actually have a BUB – ha!

Off to get my 2nd cup of coffee!

Are you talking about Liquid Cashmere Black which is a sweet, syrupy, fruity flanker, so different from the original incensy Black? Or maybe the original was reformulated and I was not aware of it.

I’m wondering if that was Liquid Cashmere Black (which is a sort-of flanker to the Cashmere Mist series)? That one was sweet and is nothing like Black Cashmere. Confusing names ?

I would not call BC sweet at all. It’s quite unisex, actually, and bracing on first application but it mellows just beautifully.

“And then, in 2002, Axe arrived. A body spray meant to split the difference between deodorant and cologne, Axe bulldozed the senses with a fragrance so strong it seemed to precede the bodies it clung to — like Febreze, or a bad reputation. Almost 20 years later, it hasn’t managed to shake its association with the scent of middle school.”

Not a Unicorn, but beautiful – SOTD = Seville a L’Aube. My bottle is almost gone. I hope a replacement will be the same. So many things I thought i would acquire one day are now not available, or apparently adjusted beyond recognition. Just in case, what are new excellent Orange Blossom scents that might take the place of this one as a pillar of a collection? I am looking at California Reverie, and the Oranges Azemour (SP??) Robin wore the other day as possibilities…

Have you smelled those 2 before? I’ve only smelled (and own) CR, but wouldn’t imagine it a sub for Seville. Seville is much richer and chewy, while CR is light and airy, with more jasmine to my nose than orange blossom.
Maybe PdN Neroli Intense? It’s richer and the beeswax makes it a bit chewy, too. Also, maybe Hiram Greene Dilettante?

Not sure if this is considered a unicorn, but I’m in Valentino V. I remember buying it when it was released in 2005, upon first wearing. The bottle is about half gone now and the top notes seem faint. It was a good work scent!

It is a grey rainy day, and the only bright spot outside is a group of bullfinches feeding on the trees near my window. So I wanted to pick a sunny scent, contrasting with the weather.
Salvatore Ferragamo Tuscan Soul – a herbal/citrus scent which transports me to a grove of citrus trees with lush green herbs. Leans toward masculine but is still suitable for a woman. And a unicorn, I think.

By the way, only two days till March!

I am assuming this is a unicorn. I am in an oudh perfume oil from (I think) Rasasi perfumes. I bought a lot of five bottles of scent at an estate sale that included a crystal stopper bottle with 5-6 ml of scent in it that looks very much like Dhaneloudh Al Nafees. This stuff is a powerhouse and I have to be careful to put on only the tiniest bit.

My unicorn for today is Fragonard F de Fragonard edt. This was given to me by my aunt around 1994. It was her bottle and I believe it is from the seventies, because of the olive green and gold box. I have not been able to find mention of this anywhere, ever. It smells like fancy soap, and cologne-y.
Hey, is there a plumber in the house? Can anyone tell me why I get perfectly hot water out of every faucet except for my shower, which has recently decided to stay at luke warm? My water heater is about 8 years old.

Is your shower on the top floor of a multi story building? If so, that could be a sign that your water heater needs maintenance.

I know that we’ve had to drain our water heater and remove sediment from it a few times, and after we did that, we had better delivery of hot water everywhere. But that is weird only your shower has an issue. ?

Lilyjo, there’s a mixer valve in your shower apparatus. When it goes bad, it can let too much cold mix with the hot. If you take the handle and the cover off and take a photo of the inside, a good hardware store should be able to sell you a replacement part. I fixed mine by myself, but I am handy. If you aren’t, you need a handyperson or a plumber.

Thanks! It was a blast, although a little too crowded for my comfort.
Actually, I’m not sure that much work went into it, lol. We practiced a little before, but many of the musicians came super late, so didn’t rehearse. We were the only amateurs, so an improv thing is a little muddling, but it worked in the end.

Finally participating in the CP with Anne Pliska, which I originally heard about on this blog, but have rarely seen mentioned otherwise. It is a unicorn I found on my hunt for the perfect vanilla fragrance. I can’t classify it as that, but still a lovely unicorn I don’t want to be without.

It’s because so many people have stopped smoking, their noses work better – they smell stuff, but they are untrained and so unusual smells means something weird and suspect somewhere, you know what I mean?

It’s more than many that quit smoking. People who claim to have allergies or actually do have them. Those that pretend want it banned for no reason, except they don’t like the smell. Those who have allergies, it’s understandable. Was wearing perfume for over 10 years at work and it was just recently became a problem.

Not really a unicorn, except for on this blog…I mean we are talking mass-produced. Channeling a more mature middle school male in Old Spice Amber body spray. A discontinued scent, which saddens me, because I loved the anti-perspirant. Lots of black currant.

Finalizing the set of photos to take to the hair salon tomorrow. I’m going in…getting bangs. Tired of my big forehead, and, according to a friend, bangs are basically free Botox.

I have a suggestion for a Friday Community Project, inspired by the tapestry used to illustrate this post: wear a scent that features a note commonly found in Medieval perfumes, like rose, thyme, clove, etc. Well, maybe not rose since it’s so easy.

There’s a cool image here from a Medical manuscript on heath about the use of herbs:

        https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Culinary-herbs-from-the-Vienna-Tacuinum-Sanitatis-A-sage-Salvia-officinalis-folio_fig4_279439500

This is probably about medicinal or culinary usage, but sage and saffron both were and continue to be used in perfumery.

Akro Dark. No CP points but its chocolatey comfort is making me feel less like drowning myself in one of the ankle deep puddles of frozen-water-and-slush that are blanketing my city today.

We had two glorious balmy days above 0° earlier this week and while I know it’s completely unfair, my heart is always like “no, you said it was spring, you can’t do this!!!!!” when late February and early March bring more snow dumps and -30° days after a temporary thaw.

I think I have a unicorn, or at least a ‘my little pony’ proximity in Blocki’s ‘ In every season’.
I am in the opening now and it has a nice feel, I may be getting some plastic doll but it’ is soft. Maybe also hazel nut or cardamom? I have half of my dabber on. This reminds me of something else in a good way. It would be a good office scent.

I’m not in a unicorn, but trying out two more Luckyscent samples in my quest for the perfect mimosa fragrance. Mimosa pour Moi and Love Mimosa (Amouage). Both are beautiful! We have a gorgeous sunny day though it’s cool (for here), 60 forecast high. I am about to go off to teach a substitute class on Plato’s Republic… There are parts of that dialogue I really hate, but today it’s reminding me a lot of contemporary politics. I won’t say any more.

Forgive me if I’ve suggested this before, but I think Vilhelm’s Modest Mimosa is just about perfect. Unfortunately it is a gajillionty dollars.

the Amouage gets frequent praise. Will you eventually buy a FB?

My unicorn today is Caron’s wonderfully weird and cheery Aimez Moi- I love this perfume, so great on a miserable cold day, and one of my best bargains, think it was about £15 on eBay for 100 ml, and the bottle is lovely! I wonder why this one isn’t mentioned more often? I definitely recommend it! (Violet & licorice).

No unicorn, but for some bizarre reason, last night I thought up a scent for my favorite movie from last year.
Top Notes: Bitter Caraway Seed (to represent the smell of bug spray)
    Mid Development Peach, Musk
Base(ment) Notes: The indolic- fecal aspect of jasmine, and a salt-metalic mixture to represent blood
No that would not smell very good, but Parasite is a movie where characters turn up their noses at the way others smell.

Hmm. Maybe I should have gotten to see Little Women. I can just imagine Marmie in a Lilac soliflore, and JO in an avant grade (for the 1800’s Ambergris)

Fantastic note composition for Parasite. Peach would definitely be a major player. It was definitely one of my favorites of 2019 too. Hehe to basement notes.

I think I saw this one mentioned here, but it’s definitely a unicorn: Deneuve.
I think it’s a great perfume, and it’s sad that it’s not in production any longer.

There’s that cute, friendly looking unicorn picture – it makes me smile.

I am wearing Persephenie Kildren today, so nice with its ginger and amber. Those are the notes that stand out the most to me with this one. I’d say it’s a unicorn scent.

Yes, it would be a good thing if Deneuve was still in production.

The Different Company Une Nuit Magnetique, though I was at TJ Maxx at lunch time and saw a spray scent bottle on the mark-down shelf with Unicorn in its name (not even as fancy as Paris Hilton Unicorn).

I’m in one of my favorite unicorns, and I’ve also worn it recently. It’s Paul & Joe Blanc, a Jean-Claude Ellena discontinued gem. The perfume it’s most similar to, in my opinion, is L’eau d’Hiver. I just adore Blanc and am so happy to have recently bought another partial bottle of it on eBay.

Wearing Byredo Rodeo and testing Bottega Veneta Parco something or other Magnolia. The Bottega is a nice transparent magnolia skin scent, maybe too ephemeral for some but I’m finding it’s how I like white florals.

Wearing a unicorn of mine from long ago, Ferentina. It’s somewhat a bwf, but there’s also notes of thyme and juniper. Long discontinued, sadly I learned this fact of ‘perfume life’ with this scent.

It was going for crazy prices on eBay about a year ago but it’s no longer even showing up on there.

My unicorn for Friday is “Aphrodisia” by Brocard, since I don’t see the brand mentioned often. A powdery yellow floral with vanilla, very nice. Sweeter than my usual SOTDs.
