Monday scent of the day 2/3

Posted by Robin on 3 February 2020 179 Comments

Ouch, another Monday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I’m in Hermès Brin de Réglisse.

Reminder: on Saturday, 2/8, Now Smell This turns 15! For our birthday, we're moving the Friday Project to Saturday, and meshing it with the Lazy Weekend Poll. Wear a fragrance that you found out about from Now Smell This, or received in a freebiemeet, swapmeet or splitmeet, or just wear a favorite fragrance that you've talked about on Now Smell This. Plus, if you can, share the single best tip or piece of advice you ever received from another reader. (There will be no post on Friday, by the way, because I'm traveling again...if you want to chat, use the Thursday poll!)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Wow! That is a very peaceful and beautiful picture, Robin!

Wearing the last drops of Carner Barcelona D600. Full bottle thunked! I liked it and enjoyed it, but I will not replace it!

Thank you! ? I heard about D600 from you and I really enjoyed it. I have no plans to restock, since there are so many other perfumes on my to buy list that are priority. But if another bottle falls in my lap I will welcome it eagerly!

Brin de Réglisse is beautiful. Good idea for a Monday!

For me, more Philosykos.. just easy.

Congrats Chiefs fans! What a great game and of course the commercials, so many good ones. Both my husband and I teared up over the NY Life Insurance one.

    Good morning Y’all,

While the Super Bowl was on, I took that time to deep clean my room including my perfume collection (I don’t think I could ever sit still as long as that game ran), and I always get re-inspired and re-excited about my smelly collection. I also find scents that I’ve forgotten about and it’s fun to get reacquainted with old favorites. So today I’m smelling cozy and cocoa-y in Nest Cocoa Woods. Such a good one for a cold winter day!

SMELLY GOOD PRICE ALERT: My TJ Maxx had a couple of bottles of Korres Amethyst Oud and Emerald Oud EdP for just $6.99!!! These were launched just a year or two ago, and they must not have been very popular. Anyway, I bought the Amethyst Oud and really love it…it’s RICH and woody and deep, and definitely unisex. Anyhoo, keep an eye out for this good deal……Korres is a great brand!

I’m wearing my favourite scent of all time (I can’t believe I have one, but I do), Parfum d’Hermes extrait from all the way back in 1984, one of those of-the-moment scents that borrows from nearly every fragrance family: it’s green, a floral oriental, a chypre, woody and balsamic, but most of all it is rich and voluptuous and intoxicating. In a just world it would have been acclaimed as one of the all-time great scents, an instant classic, and would still be available, unaltered and beloved. I’ve been neglecting it, and I’m going to wear it every day this week, see if I can make myself sick of it. I’m betting no.

There’s nothing more plush and golden, nothing. It’s practically incandescent. If you ever see the vintage extrait, buy it. (My half-ounce bottle is from 1984 and it has not faded a bit in those 35 years.)

Oh, do you know what? I mixed up PdH with Jour d’Hermes. That’s the modern extrait I have and love. I’ve never tried PdH, though your description sounds incredible. I saw a bottle on eBay and was tempted, but I really shouldn’t indulge in blind buys anymore, even for scents you describe as plush, golden, and incandescent :)

I think I need to take this foot to urgent care and see if I fractured anything.

Went from 85 to 41 Degrees in my part of Los Angeles and a touch of JM vetiver and golden vanilla will do the trick. I love this one. Warm and cozy, and never cloying with a fresh opening.

Jo Malone White Moss & Snowdrop (sample finished). I learned about it here, from one of Robin’s posts. It is nice, smells like an expensive masculine cologne to me (in a good way). I put it on about three or four hours ago and can smell it only if I bring my hand to the nose.

In my Perfumarie blind scent choice, which was revealed over the weekend to be…. Un Jardin Après La Mousson by Hermès.

Which is both good and bad, I suppose. Widely commercially available? Yes! Do I like it? Yes, very much so, the shivering-cold spices and vetiver are a nice change for me, and I do get that impression of watermelon rind (a smell I love) without it smelling rank/rotten as some people did.

But $110-150CAD for an EdT with a lasting power of a few hours? Ouch. Unless I can find it on sale somewhere, I think I’d feel hard-pressed to go FB on this one.

Wore Dia this morning and thinking on what perfume I can wear that I can fly under the radar with at work. I think that I will go with Chanel no 5. If I get nonsense about it, I can say it must be the mystery lotion I found while cleaning. If my coworker can wear her BBW lotion, I can wear my scented lotions.

Back to work, and back in Eau Duelle, my new favorite vanilla.
We watched the super bowl yesterday too and we cheered for Kansas since they hadn’t won a game in over 50 years. It wasn’t looking good there for awhile but they came back for a great end of the game. I love watching the game just as much for the commercials but didn’t see any VW ads this year or Budweiser with the horses and yellow lab pups.

I’ll start the CP anniversary week off by wearing Infusion d’Iris, which got so much love here that I did a blind buy about 6 years ago. I never loved it, so set it in the back of the cabinet And also gave various decants away. It’s about time I revisited.

I must have read NST starting in the early days but was just a lurker for a long time. I know that back in 2005 I was a big blog surfer…perfumes and many other subjects. Many of those blogs have disappeared, so I’m tremendously grateful for NST living on. It will be easy for me to find scents I own simply because of a review or recommendation here.

And, off topic…I started watching Super Bowl but joined a bit late because I went to see “sex, lies and videotape”, which I hadn’t seen since it was first released. Holds up. And a young James Spader is always worthwhile to view. I ended up switching away from the SP to the 7 Continents show on BBCA. I simply got tired of all the commercials. Every third down it seemed. Switched back in the 4th Quarter…good timing. I’m sure most of my friends in the Bay are crushed today (I grew up a Raider fan, so I’ve never been among The Faithful.)

Yes, SF/Bay area fans (my hubby included) are crushed. Equally, Kansas City earned their win, The Niners earned their loss; bad calls from the refs (e.g., Ben Niemann helmet hit Jimmy Garoppolo) didn’t help matters. *sigh*

Sluggish morning today in PW Tea Rose, which is stunning and also cheap as chips and I’m sad I didn’t pick it up from Marshall’s when I saw it there once for about $15.

Exciting news: SSS is have a 20% off sale until Valentine’s Day with code SCENTS20. (I think they raised their prices though? I’m not sure.) I nearly pulled the trigger, but I just want a few 5 ml travel sprays, and don’t really want to pay the massive shipping fee for <$125 carts. But if you have a purchase in mind, go make it now!

I’m kicking myself for purchasing immediately after SSS reopened instead of waiting for this sale. I bought all 4 perfumes I wanted, and of those, I’ve only worn from one of the bottles so far.

Aww that’s a bummer :( (maybe you can verify if the prices have indeed gone up a bit?) Anyway I am sure they appreciated your early business. I bet it helped get things going!

        What were the four bottles?

I think they were raised slightly but not significantly. I still find them quite reasonable. I think the old prices for travel sprays were $17-$21 and now they’re $20-$25 if that helps.

I bought 15ml of Equestrian and Jour Ensoleille and 5ml of Bee’s Bliss. Bee’s Bliss was the only blind buy and the only one I’ve worn so far to try it out. I do still have samples and a decant of the others, so I’ve worn Equestrian from my decant after I bought the bottle.

That’s a good way to look at it of supporting the business early on with the new owner. I was thinking over the weekend about how much of a bargain shopper I am. I very rarely pay full price for designer or niche perfume, but I’m very willing to pay full price for indies. I’m thinking it’s mainly because there’s less mystery to who is behind the brand and the price point is typically lower.

Oh yeah, agreed that the price increases are small and that the new prices are still reasonable.

I’m also way more ok with spending full price on Indie scents than on bigger brands :) It reminds me of pixel’s semi-serious attitude of considering Indie purchases as donations to independent artists!

I’m wearing Jasmins Marzipane, received in a swap with cazaubon. It will not be hard at all to do the CP every day this week.

This Monday started off very well other than feeling so tired when I woke up. As I was checking emails, my eyes were drawn to an eBay alert letting me know a listing had come up for Paul & Joe Blanc, which has been discontinued for at least 8 years or so. I’ve had this eBay alert set up for a year or two with no hits, so I bounced on buying the partial bottle that was just listed. I’m so excited to have more than the 5-8ml left in a bottle that I’ve been hoarding.

In weekend smelly news since I didn’t post in the lazy weekend poll, I thunked both my decant of Volutes EDP and my sample of the EDT. I definitely prefer the EDP and hope that when I purchase a bottle it smells as good as my older decant did.

I didn’t really have anything to add to the reading poll since I haven’t read much since last time I posted about books in early Jan. But I’m about a third of the way through The Goldfinch. I love it and wish I could spend all my time reading instead of going to work. I also read a fun thriller, The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager, just before I started The Goldfinch.

SOTD = Jo Malone Vetiver and Golden Vanilla

… from samples kindly procured for me by the Nordstrom LaMer SA because the Macys Herlad Square Jo Malone SA was b-tchy. Anyway, if you like nutty vetiver and non-gourmand vanilla, this one’s for you! I likened it to Carner Barcelona D600 except without the iris. I was highly amused when I saw pfl67 wearing D600 today ?.

Oh, and one more rant. In the past week, I saw 3 instances of drivers running a red light from a stopped position! They were probably distracted and saw the green from the side and no cars so decided to go. They were extremely lucky…

They went straight across the intersection so basically they could have been hit on either side. Seriously crazy, distracted and if they get into an accident and live, it’s always the other person’s fault.

Went to Parfum d’Ambre this afternoon and I could have spent way more time there since there were so many brands I’d never even heard of. Ended up buying Wise Plum which is one of the new scents from their house brand. So new that they just got in the packaging and they had to dilute the concentrate in order to sell me some. I think they said it was plum and saffron mostly. Also, I’m thinking that I may want Quality of Flesh and Dejelam eventually….

SOTD = Sammarco Vitrum Extrait, from the sample stash. It starts off as a huge SMOKY scent on me, complete with a decent whiff of BBQ. After 3 or 4 hours it has calmed down a lot into a woody vetiver and incense perfume. A little goes a long way with this one.

In this case, on my skin, it refers to the smoked meat itself! I smelled a hint of smoked pulled pork! Yummy to have as dinner, but I am not so sure as a perfume note. ?

I LOVE bbq notes. For me, a bbq note is a kind of smoky, chewy, leather something. I first got a noseful of bbq in Tauer Lonesome Rider, which has a good dose of bbq sauce as well. I also get bbq in SSS Fireside Intense. I know there are some other bbq-y scents I adore, but I can’t remember them off the top of my head.

FWIW, I didn’t get any BBQ notes in Fireside Intense. Lots of leather and wood smoke, plus some amber at the end.

I am certain I could wear a month’s worth of perfumes I read about here on NST, but I’ll do the CP for the week. Today’s SOTD is Eau de Merveilles. I don’t wear it often, but it smells like nothing else I own and is worth keeping around just for that.

Earlier I had a light spray of Memo Marfa, before I went out to do some errands. I’m dealing with annoying paperwork issues that keep delaying aspects of life. To compensate, I stopped off at the liquor store (!) then at Marshall’s and TJ Maxx. No interesting perfumes, though I did see Mugler Aura. All I bought was a cute fluffy little cat bed. In the typical manner of cats, they are so far displaying manifest indifference to it. But I bet I’ll find that someone has snuck into it by tonight! On my way home I applied Musc Ravageur from my little sample spray in my purse. Both of my scents today came free, courtesy of kind people on this blog!

I had a pretty good day today with lot’s of sun, plus my boss had the day off, lol. I was able to speak to the head of special needs for the school district, about the issue I had with the classroom helper. It looks like she will have to go for more training but will still be in the classroom.
My Sotd was Allure edp. My bottle is just about half empty, I think it’s 4 or 5 years old, so not bad.

    SotD = Twilly

Feeling very twirly in Twilly, a BWF skewed “young”. I like it a lot. There’s a moment when the sandalwood in the base gets a little raspy to my nose, but the rest of the ride is joyful. :D

House twins with my Hermes folks today! Can I get a woot-woot? LOL

Seriously though, the lavender in Brin de Reglisse is one of my favorites, along with Caron Pour un Homme. I loves me some lavender.

Hope everyone had a marvelous Monday!
