Tuesday scent of the day 1/28

Posted by Robin on 28 January 2020 233 Comments

Happy Tuesday and happy Data Privacy Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire Black Perfecto.

Reminder: on 1/31, celebrate Backward Day by reversing your usual perfume choice or routine in some way.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Gien Les Oiseaux Japanese Teapot ("First created in the 18th century, Gien's delightful Oiseaux de Paradis design is inspired by ancient Chinese birds of paradise porcelain while the coquille shape is reminiscent of French Rouen faience. Featuring a hand-painted blue filet, this charming tea pot will brighten up your teatime table.") is £195 at Harrods.

Jealous of your Turkish coffee! And forgot to report my tea, which this morning was Lumbini Estate Ceylon with added cardamom, and is currently Numi Dried Lime.

I love Gien and have a few pieces myself, although not a Gien teapot.

Le Secret has a hedgehog. I’m nuts about hedgehogs, for some reason.
I have some Gien Colette, Azur and Le petit prince. I wouldn’t mind having the full Azur line. It’s so pretty.

I love Gien. I have a set of dessert plates and matching platter that I treasure. Plus a couple of small square plates that I use more than one would think. That teapot could result in an enabler pin because it’s making me head over to eBay to look at the Gien for sale…

Look up the pattern…I realized after that the colors on other sites are much more vibrant than shown at Harrods. There is also a nice 15 oz cafe au lait cup.

Although if this picture is accurate, the colors *are* rather muted:

That tea pot is gorgeous, the whole Oiseaux set is wonderful btw (i gave my mom the tea cup and saucer for her birthday a few years ago).
I like nice tableware but hardly buy it for myself. Though I started out with a few Ittala espresso cups 2 years ago, now I also have two big tea mugs…and two small bowls…so there is a start. slowly but surely ?

    Lovely teapot!

I’m commando so far. Just out of the shower and trying to figure out my mood so I can decide on a perfume to either match it or boost it.

Tea is coffee and breakfast is a semi-burnt bagel, which is my attempt to disguise the fact it’s stale. I slathered it with blueberry jam and enjoyed immensely, thank you very much!

I’m doing a Diptyque week, so a fail for the cp but at least I smell good in Tam Dao.
I just dropped my car off to FINALLY get the windshield replaced. What started as a chip on the passenger side has grown into a crack over almost the entire thing.?Oops. When I first called my insurance company last fall they gave me two options. I chose the one closest to my house. They cancelled on me twice, the first time because the technician had called in sick and the second time because the windshield they had received was cracked. I dropped it off there yesterday morning and waited all day for them to call and when they did they told me they were not able to fix it because the windshield they had reviewed was cracked- again!? So, you keep my car for seven hours just to call and tell me the work wasn’t done!!? I was LI-VID? My husband had to talk me down, lol. I immediately called my insurance company and told them to find somewhere else. They did and in a couple of hours I will have my car back.? Rant over. Have a good day all!

I’d be livid too! I’ve been through 4(!) windshields and have learned if you don’t get the chip or crack fixed right away, eventually it will spread across the entire glass.

On another livid subject: I have health insurance but still had to pay out of pocket when I was sick a couple weeks ago. Why, you ask? Because it was open enrollment and they had assigned me a “member id” yet, and therefor we’re unable to even confirm I had a plan with them. Now, they pay the clinic thaT I ALREADY PAID, and I have to wait for the clinic to reimburse me, which could take up to four months! I was so angry, I threaten to change to a different agency so I don’t I have to deal with BC/BS. And my plan is a PPO!!! Rant over…I think ?

The last dregs of a decant of NK Space Man, warm and woody for a cold winter day. A few years ago in London I found myself near a Space NK shop and went in to buy a bottle, only to be told that it had *just* been discontinued, like mere months ago, and there was none to be had anywhere. Just my luck.

Yes some of the hypnotics like ambien give the most vivid dreamscapes I could not escape.
Years later I still remember that feeling.
Onto babies, a dear friend is due in two days for a much wanted, long awaited for first baby.
I was on call until her mother in law arrived a few days ago as she lost her own mom when she was much too young.
Most of my friends are at grandparent age so this is exciting!

I’ve tried the tart cherry juice too. Nothing seems to work reliably for me except anti-anxiety medication in moderately low doses.

I hope I sleep better too. It was technically from a shop, actually a small indie perfumer who works out of her house in Munich. The problem is it was the last bottle she had for sale, due to an ingredient shortage there wasn’t any more. She very generously offered to send me the last bottle she had, the one she was keeping for herself, as a replacement. Her name is Annette Neuffer. Very grateful for her making it up to me like this, I feel bad for both of us.

Had a terrible past week. Took our dogs to be groomed last Wednesday (my husband did as I had a hectic workday), but when I got home I could see our littlest dog was squinting and both eyes were very red. I thought he was just sensitive to the shampoo the parlour had used, but over the next 24 hours he deteriorated so much that we had to take him (after hours, so hugely expensive) to a vet on Thursday night. On thorough examination, it transpired that he had HUGE bilateral corneal abrasions as well as a 5 x 4 cm strip under his chin that looked like it had been tackled by a skin graft cutter. The whole weekend was spent nursing the little guy and my husband was on call, so couldn’t really help. The doggo is better, but we still have to change his dressings twice a day and had to take him for a follow up appointment yesterday. I went to complain at the salon, but thus far the owner hasn’t even called to apologize. This would have been a job for hajusuuri to get justice for our little dog. SOT past few days: dog + disinfectant. Post shower: all the most comforting Lutens perfumes: Chergui, Santal Majuscule, Chypre Rouge.

That is just awful. Some groomers just lack patience with old dogs, or nervous dogs or whatever. It sounds like a proper nightmare for your little dog. I hope it makes a quick and full recovery.

I once had a similar thought not quite so awful experience. My dog used to be groomed by someone I trusted and still work with. The last time she did, my dog was completely out of sorts afterwards although I couldn’t find anything the matter with her physically.
I never took her back there. Had to tell some white lies, but my dog went to a friend who has great patience as well as great skill with all sorts of dogs and was never upset about being groomed again.

YOu are right not to take your dog back. We have used this parlour for the past seven years – from before having these doggies. But if your dog is out of sorts, that is a sure sign of something being not right. Our doggie ( a miniature Malteser and the sweetest, gentlest little doggie) seems to be suffering from PTSD. The vet said that his eyes were much better and his chin/chest wound seems to be under control (at least not getting septic and slowly granulating), but he just sits and shivers and is fed by hand and getting water with a syringe. He has no interest when the other two barks or runs to the gate.

Unless you plan to take your dog back to that place, look them up and leave a review on Yelp and wherever else you’ll find them. Things do happen. Not taking care of them afterwards (at least an apology!) is not acceptable.

We will never take them back. I haven’t been more assertive, because – as you rightly said – things do happen, but I am irked that they didn’t fess up and apologize immediately. I think that they tried to stem the bleeding with chemicals that got into the eyes and, had we known about it earlier, we would have acted earlier.

That’s terrible. Our dog only ocassionally gets nicked and once got a Staph infection that may have started with a cut at the groomers – but that they managed to hurt your dog’s eyes is just bad. Definitely something to yelp about! Hope doggo gets better fast and that you can find a different good groomer.

I am so sorry your doggie had to go thru all that. I stopped taking my old dog to the gromming place after the last 2 times he didn’t want to come out of his bed for several days. I am not sure what happened, but I didn’t want to risk something worse. Since then, I have been doing the grooming myself. Not easy, since it requires patience and
being very careful, but I want him to be safe and comfortable.

I learned now that dogs are really sensitive (we had all our dogs since being pups, and none of them had ever been treated badly, so they were the happiest and most carefree of creatures). This little one shows the behaviour that your dog showed. Something really bad must have happened for your dog not to want to come out of his bed for several days. We will also groom the dogs ourselves now, but it will be difficult, esp as one is a huge Bouvier.

Thank god she is a wash and wear dog because I have seen some pretty brutal groomers. I hope you poor doggo recovers quickly. I would take that vet bill into the groomers place of business and cause a right hullabaloo! They’ll address the issue right away because they don’t want anyone in the waiting room to see the ruckus. I can’t stand people who are rough with animals, kids, and the elderly. Gets my hackles right up! Ugh!

So sorry for your dog! I just heard a similar story, but with someone’s pet rabbit. The rabbit actually died shortly after whatever they did to it at the grooming place. And they were similarly unresponsive.
Like Deva suggested, she did bring in the vet bill and report and they attended to her quickly so as not to scare off the other customers.
I do hope your dog heals quickly!

I am wearing Rose de Petra from a decant some kind NSTer sent me and am thinking about how sad I will be when it runs dry. What a wonderful combination of rose and sparkly cardamom.

And I am exceedingly grumpy because USPS appears to have delivered a perfume package for me to an apartment complex three Zip codes away >:o This is very, very sad for me. I have been looking so forward to this package all week. It should have contained Rose Jam and Iris Nazarena, and I’ve been particularly looking forward to dousing myself in Rose Jam. I’m trying to call USPS to figure out which apartment complex they delivered it to (the listing says it was delivered to a front desk/mail room) so I can go over and wander around like a creeper and hopefully see my package.

SOTD = April Aromatics Calling All Angels

This is one of my favorites from April Aromatics!

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B73zVL5hcpO/?igshid=15csjqfw1febq

My little teaser yesterday about burning in h-ll despite going to church on Sunday was because I chose not to shake hands with people and pretty much said I don’t or prefer not to shake hands. The pastor asked people to turn and greet someone you don’t know and introduce yourself. In this day and age, that’s just as bad as drinking from the same communion cup (my church has little cups instead). Anyway, I probably should have offered to bump elbows instead. I’ll be ready next time. What would you do?

We were just talking about hand shakes yesterday at dinner after having received one limp and one clammy one in the same day when I usually don’t do a lot of hand shaking. I think some kind of formalized greeting is not a bad thing, but like you, I’m not a huge hand shake fan. I suggested the “upper arm pat”. The kids grimaced and thought fist pumps were better. But for church – I’d go with the arm pat, personally, or just bring a bottle of hand sanitizer for after?

I think it’s totally fine NOT to do something you don’t feel comfortable doing without even being apologetic. Smile, look into eyes and nod, not lowering your gaze to even notice somebody’s hand or, if you do notice, add just matter-of-factly: “germaphobic, never shake hands.”

Day 2, Backwards day: Re-visiting a perfume that you designated to the swap pile. In may case, Moulin Rouge. I’m still thinking I might swap it, but I like it much better today than I did initially, so it might move from “swap for anything” to “swap only for the right thing”…

I feel like a human being (that makes me think of Dorothy Parker in I live for your visits) again after a good night at last. Appreciated very much and I think answered today the nice good wishes.
Today I felt like wearing Jolie Madame, my EDT is older but not quite vintage I think, I save my extrait for special occasions, but honestly, it’s a very strong EDT and projects a lot.

Just clapping at your shout out to Dorothy Parker!

I have a very fragile old collection of poetry given to my grandma by a beau when she was young. I guess the fellow knew he was on the way out. His love note said, “So long as I have yesterday,
Go take your damned tomorrow!”– of course that is DP. Years after she died (my grandmother that is) I tracked down the son of the man, who was a musician and was fascinated to learn of this romance of his father’s, not all that long before his father married his mother. Super sadly, the son died very shortly after we connected. Anyway, I love DP because she actually reminds me of my grandma, who was full of rhymes and witticisms.

After Diorissimo, probably the sadly gone DelRae Debut, then maybe EllieD, then maybe Un Coeur en Mai.

But nothing comes close to vintage Diorissimo.

I’m planning to wear Francesca Bianchi perfumes all week, assuming I can pick 5 that are work appropriate. Today’s is Angel’s Dust. It’s beautiful – sweet powdery with a musky, naughty edge. I think the description on her website says it perfectly:

“This scent, reminiscent of an elegant boudoir exuding aromas of wood closet, facepowder and lipstick, is designed to seduce.
A combination of flowers, musk and Mysore sandalwood make it at first powdery, velvety and innocent.
Some oriental resins then release an intense rush of decadent sensuality.”

SotD is Zoologist Elephant, the last of my three samples I got to try from that house.

It smells beautiful… But is SO not me.

Won’t lie, half heartbroken that none of these Zoologist samples made me fall in love – but also half relieved that my wallet won’t be raided to pick up a bottle!

I went to Perfumarie in NYC and did their “blind” tasting of January, and so I’ll get to find out what perfume I chose in just a few days!

The notes they listed for me were “ginger, cardamom, coriander and vetiver” which could be anything from cheap to super pricey perfumes.

Won’t lie, I think it may be a cheaper option as the longevity isn’t amazing, but it has such a lovely icy-cold texture to it that I’m not mad.

In Dzongkha for an early morning meeting in SF. I enjoyed being in the city, but had to hurry home for work…

Off topic, not for the squeamish, update on living in the Bay Area these days: Super sleepy. Did not get a full night’s rest and I am feeling it. My reason will surely impress you. Our alarm went off at about 2 AM, and it is very loud. Clambering out of bed, stumbling to the keyboard, punching in the wrong code 15 times… the whole time the siren is blaring. But that is not the worst part. Ready for it. Brace yourself. We have had a rat invasion and one set off the glass break alarm by somehow dragging a trap across out kitchen floor. Not yet fully grossed out? My husband said there was a leg still in the trap. Yep. We’ve caught 7 rats in total over the past 5 days, in our basement and in our KITCHEN. This is the single most distressing thing to happen to us in this house. So so gross. We have a really clean house, I assure you. And now of course we are not leaving fruit out in a bowl on the counter at night or anything… they were coming through a hole we haven’t yet found to eat the cat food. I don’t want to use poison because one of our cats will catch rodents from time to time…. and he got really sick last time he brought me a errrr well “trophy” he’d caught out back. The vet said he probably ingested some rat poison (I know at least one of my neighbors must have been contending with the same invaders!)

Hello NST! I’ve been a bit of a klutz today, but I will take that over yesterday’s emotional YUCK. Not sure why I was dropping things all over the place. I didn’t break anything, so no harm, no foul. Tuesday was indeed an improvement.

SOTD = commando today. I didn’t want to risk a perfume picking up an unwanted association this morning, so I abstained. I suspect that I will be back to my perfumed ways very soon though.

Hello! Last night/early this morning scent: Demeter Baby Powder, which I found at the local Marshall’s last week. Blind buy pretty much, but for $7 for an ounce, I was okay with that. I like it better than I like some much more expensive fragrances. LOL. It’s nice, and didn’t come across to me as too strong. Pleasant and inoffensive works well for me. 🙂

This evening: Dabbed from a sample of SL Lavande et Encens. Speaking of something that would be much more expensive for an ounce…I really do like this one, but not enough to buy a whole bottle of it. Sadly, I need to pay bills. So it goes.
