Monday scent of the day 1/27

Posted by Robin on 27 January 2020 229 Comments

Another Monday, but also Chocolate Cake Day, if that helps. Happy birthday to Alan Cumming! (And RIP Kobe Bryant.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm all out of 2nd Cumming, but while checking to be sure, I came upon CB I Hate Perfume On A Clear Day You Can See Forever. It won't last, but for the moment, I smell fantastic.

Reminder: on 1/31, celebrate Backward Day by reversing your usual perfume choice or routine in some way.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m wearing L’Heure Bleue, because that is what I grabbed, unseen, out of my decant box.

    Mahora from a generous NSTer

This morning a gave my Mr L a gran bacione before he walked out the door. A nod to Kobe, and how he held onto his lingua italaina.

My FIL in law arrived safe and sound back in Canada. He said to me last night on the phone, I already miss making my chai tea for you!

    Urgh monday…nooo.

I wore Diorella the whole weekend!!! I really needed something joyful on these grey January days (a very friendly NSTer once gave me a few ml of the vintage juice in a swap ☺️)

Today I am wearing Le Cri.
Another good one to fight the winter blues ?

Yup i am really in need of sunshine and warmer temperatures.

There are far cheaper ways for me to get a cat pee smell if I was so inclined. We had a cat once that didn’t like any form of bag, including luggage, gym bags, purses, plastic bags. You simply can’t get that smell out. The memories make me shiver. Don’t need a scent memory…

It was. We’d have to tell people to not put any form of bag on the floor. Before we were married, my husband traveled a lot, so we think she was taking out her irritation on bags…must have equated them with his absence. (She adored him and grudgingly accepted me.)

Ugh, you are so right even though it’s backwards week you CANNOT UN-smell that one.
I had the same reaction to the fig in Mandragore and was so disappointed. We have a fig tree outside our bathroom window and in the warmth of the summer we can’t open our windows if the sun is shining.
Still I love the tree, but not any perfumes. I hope that you are scrubbed clean by now.

I’ve never detected fig in Mandragore – either version. If I did I’d scrub it off immediately! I love both of them. Strangely enough, I do quite like Korres Fig body butter… It’s very dry, not sweet at all.

      You smell great!

I full bottle bought Akro Dark in NYC two weekends ago on one sample’s acquaintance. It won me over so fast.

It’s swiftly becoming a new fave, so many of my perfumes the last two years on the road were from endless-summer countries, so I’m only now building a small assortment of winter and autumn loves – important as I live in Canada!

I didn’t because I was specifically looking for a chocolate dominant perfume (fell in love with Dark but am also slowly getting tempted by Bruno Fazzolari’s Corpse Reviver which I had a sample of).

I very much want to try Awake though!!!

SOTD is TDC De Bachmakov because it smells like summer and I was sluggish this morning and needed a bright pick-me-up.
Went out to a local French restaurant Saturday night with some friends and one of them ordered gelato for dessert. Tasted the black sesame flavor which was so good! It was a pale black color and tasted like sesame butter (tahini) with a dash of peanut butter. I’m still thinking about it! ?

I agree, it’s really sad for all of them. He was a remarkable man, My heart goes out to the families and friends. We just lost our best friend of over 40 years over the holidays and I am far too aware of how they must be feeling.

I’m in Eau Duelle from a new decant. I haven’t ordered from ScentSplit for awhile and they’ve changed their decants. They are really nice! Thick glass and nice sprayer.
Today is my Saturday and the house is quiet because my daughter went back to school yesterday. I gave her a hug before I left for work yesterday and as I squeezed her she said to me “don’t cry.” Ugh, as hard as I try it’s like a reflex. I just can’t help it. I’m sure I’ll be fine by the end of the week, but today feels lonely and too quiet.

SL Cracheuse de Flamme, from a sample. It’s a very good rose, but it isn’t even the best rose Lutens ever made, and it definitely isn’t worth what they’re asking (€450, which is basically a joke).

    It is really good, though.

Had a nice time at the art museum yesterday. We don’t have a huge Fabrege collection, it’s kind off small but it’s my favorite part of the art museum, my 2nd is the ancient collection. Then went to a little more upscale Italian restaurant. I had some creme brulee for dessert. Woke up in Cuir de Russie but now I am wearing Les Annees 25 BIS.

I’m in Francesca Bianchi Etruscan Water from the discovery set I’m trying thanks to hajusuuri. It’s a very nice citrus aromatic chypre. Yesterday evening I wore another FB, The Dark Side, to a free 30 minute concert of one of my favorite bands that took place in a record store. We had dinner at a Thai restaurant afterwards. Here were my notes on The Dark Side: at first lots of honey and iris then powdery animalic honey very similar to MFK CPLS. Love. I need to do side by side comparison.

Having a sinusy, sleepy Monday but had a really good weekend. I’m hoping thoughts of my good weekend carry me through the day.

Well! I have so many updates to share this morning!

    1. SOTD is an inexpensive solid incense perfume my mum picked up in Japan. Ostensibly this one (she gave me two) is incense and ambergris. It actually smell lovely, and even has some slight sillage for about 15 minutes. (I found this pic of it on the web–http://www.jueok.com/plugin.php?id=zhuzhu_taobao&mod=jump_url&num_iid=569957755865)

    2. The above choice in perfume reminded me of a community project I once lobbied for–will suggest it again: Unicorn scents–perfumes you suspect almost no one else on NST owns or is very rarely worn. Sort of a variation on the game “I never” except this would be, “Bet you never. . . ”

    3. My older son and I went to the Oakland Museum’s White Elephant Sale (a very popular local fundraiser–huge warehouse of everything under the sun, second-hand) and of course I went and scoped out the perfumes. There were a couple of vintage frags that I had never heard of. When I looked them up, one apparently was collectible–but for $75, I was not going to venture. Anyway, stupidly because I do not like Petite Robe Noire, I sprayed to test a full bottle of one of the flankers to see what it smelled like (it smelled like PRN, no surprise). ANYWAY, one of the volunteers at the sale (there were literally thousands of shoppers, and probably a couple hundred volunteers, it was crazy) snapped at me, “DON’T DO THAT! Now NO ONE will volunteer at this section, and there are people with allergies. You CANNOT do that!!!!!!!” Sigh. Well, she had the last laugh because I managed to get the perfume on my wrist band, and the perfume scent was like a cloud that followed me everywhere afterwards.

    4. At said White Elephant Sale, I was perusing the books about traveling and travel memoirs (not guide books, but you know–travel stories), when I noticed a spine of a book I recognized. It was ‘The Hut Builder’ by our beloved Kanuka, sitting right there in a book-sale in Oakland, CA. (And no, it was not my old copy, thank you very much ;-) .)

    5. And lastly, over the weekend I folded, and ordered a vintage bottle of Coco Chanel, edp, from an Etsy seller in Germany. She says it is from the 1990s. It is an edp, but in splash bottle. I paid about $90 plus tax, etc. So we shall see if I ever receive it, and whether it is still any good. Fingers crossed.

Weird (but very California). They should put a sign on them or not sell perfume if they think they’re doing a disservice to the world.

Yes, but not perfume! I purchased some beautiful mid-century glass vases, a wonderful old stationery box, a book of African American poetry from the 1750s through Jim Crow, and about 10 jazz and folk CDs. My son bought himself an Aran sweater, and a Canon camera with all sorts of bits and bobs from the 1960-70s?–he’s teaching himself photography.

The perfume was priced too high to buy on a lark. This fundraiser is hugely popular, and has been run by the same women for decades–so they know what they are doing. I guess I am not their target perfume shopper!

Working on my decant of Chanel Beige edt, and when it’s gone it’s gone. This will be one of the harder decants to empty. Maybe I will go back to working on samples…

So here I am all ready for the CP – for once, I remembered what it was, and I was curious to see what everyone else was doing…but I guess y’all waiting for Friday? :)
Anyway, my “backwards” thingie today: Put on a completely unknown sample and wear it to work. Yup. Artisan Mon Numero 9, I believe. Thunked it, too, in a generous application.
Well….I’m glad it didn’t last very long.
    Happy Monday!

Ooh, Robin! I’ve always wanted to try On A Clear Day! I’m putting a note in my calendar to book an appt at the factory in the spring.

Hmm… backwards. Well, I tend to only apply perfume in the morning, and if I don’t then I just skip it for the day. So for the cp, I’ve just applied Shalimar Souffle de Parfum.

I’m in two sprays of Bengale Rouge today and I find that that second spray really made this scent pop. Its drydown is spectacular, and I would want a bottle or at least a decant of this a lot more if the drydown didn’t remind me so much of Jitterbug.

Speaking of really badly wanting things, I’ve nearly polished off my travel spray of Tam Dao and am trying to decide if it’s special enough for another travel spray/FB purchase. On the one hand, it’s gorgeous. On the other, surely I have something else in my collection that can fit that mood. No? Maybe? Suggestions?

With your collection, you probably do have something similar in mood to Tam Dao. However, I personally can’t think of anything that it smells like. So it’s a coin toss.

SOTD = Coromandel EdT, from the sample stash and hajusuuri. I have another half spritz in this, and then it will be thunked.

Commando today, except for Crabtree & Evelyn Lavender hand therapy cream at bedtime and in the morning. :)

As others have mentioned about their garden plants, my spring-blooming bulbs are very confused. I’ve got snowdrops up, and daffodil leaves starting to come up. I believe I said a few days ago that I wasn’t worried about the snowdrops.

‘Ice Follies’ is an early-blooming daffodil, especially the patch that grows near the west side of the house, but this is *too* early. ‘Ice Follies’ is super-hardy to the “you can’t kill it with an ax” level. Some of its leaves may get frosted, and some of its flowers may freeze, but I have faith that the bulbs will be just fine and that it will flower again next spring.

Yesterday I finally planted crocus that I’d gotten in October. I’ll see if they bloom — if they don’t get eaten. If I’m remembering correctly, they need a few weeks of chilling. I’ll see what all happens to the various spring bulbs I’ve got as the months go on.

You’re a bit more south, so most likely. I know Winterthur’s spring-blooming bulbs and the daffodil plantings around the Delaware Art Museum area are a couple of weeks ahead of where I live.
