Thursday scent of the day 1/16

Posted by Robin on 16 January 2020 245 Comments

Almost-Friday at last, and happy National Religious Freedom Day, or, if you prefer, National Nothing Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm copying Glannys (yesterday) in Serge Lutens Chêne.

Reminder: on 1/17, wear a fragrance with immortelle, if you have one. Suggested by Hamamelis.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I think something has happened to my nose…
I tried a few different scents this morning and I had to scrub them all off. This is why I shouldn’t wear one perfume for longer than a week (looking at you, my empty bottle of Shalimar)
I am just going to stick with the body powder for now, and take two Advil for my perfume induced headache.

SipOTD is Chai tea, with an extra punch of ginger…

Its a beautiful, gorgeous day here today..feeling blessed!

        Thanks SmokeyT
Enjoying body powder is still like a scent of the day, the Shalimar one is a little long lasting.

I added some of your book recommendations from yesterday to my library queue.

If I come across more recs, I’ll let you know! I’m joining you in headache-land. This morning’s commute was awful – I just had to drive the hubby to work, the roads are terrible, driving rain (which I’m accustomed to, having lived in FL), flooding, and one fatality. It was a white-knuckle experience but I decided to drive slowly and safely and ignore the crazies.

I hope you are where you need to be safe and sound.
I am almost 100 pages finished with my Renault book, I could be done by now but since my in laws are here I took a field trip to the Met to look at something beautiful.

Totally get that. I am completely unable to appreciate my jasmine heavier scents these days. A year or so ago, I could not get enough of jasmine. Now, it bugs me and sometimes give me a headache. I will wait out this nose phase!

SOTD is vintage L’ Artisan’s Vanille, with a spritz of L’ Artisan’s Patchouli Patch layered over Mandy’s Ancient Resins body oil….
Warm and cozy for today’s blustery weather.

Thanks! This is L’Artisan’s original vanilla release. Notes of sandalwood, vanilla, and ylang ylang. I like to give it depth with the Patch or a spray of musk (AG’s Musc Nomade is a fave).

Playing along (and scent twins with Robin) in Chene. It is nice, actually, although Mr. G’s assessment was “not my favorite”. I will thunk the sample later today (there’s only one spritz left in it) and don’t think I’ll need more, but you never know! Tomorrow will be Kyoto, which (allegedly) has an immortelle note (for others here who might be immortelle-challenged, as I am).

I wore Kyoto earlier this week, I was very surprised to see it on the Fragrantica list of immortelle perfumes as it’s a challenging note for me too.

Wearing my new sample of Zoologist Bee and it immediately shot to the top of my want list. After I sprayed it my husband came in from the other room and said “what is that gorgeous smell? That’s a good one!”
Thanks to all for the kind words about my mother the other day. She’s in an isolation room at the rehab center until Monday; my poor visiting sister is in the hospital now with the same virus and I don’t dare go see her because the virus can re-infect my mom. It’s a bit like living in a movie, wasn’t there one called Contagion?

It was so grey and cold this morning – I hate you Midwest winter! – I decided to wear something I keep for warmer weather: Jazmin Sarai’s How You Love. A very wearable jasmin – bright and with lots of cardamom. I got me some jasmin sambac while in Egypt and it has ignited alot of love for this flower, which I never really cared for in perfume despite being named after it

I’m off-project today with Floris No. 89 Eau de Toilette, which was one of a handful of nice samples I received earlier this week while visiting a British specialty shop with nancyleandros. This one is supposedly masculine but I find it perfectly unisex: citrus plus a nice array of woods and some spice (nutmeg). It says it includes oakmoss too but if so, it’s pretty subtle. The woods are very nicely blended and mixed; often I’m wary of cedar, but neither that nor lavender is too dominant here Overall very pleasant! Have a good day everyone. I’m running errands and visiting a friend in the hospital hoping to pick up his spirits a bit. It’s in an area where I like to go to antique stores so I’ll fit that in as well, just for fun.

Wearing Zino (Davidoff) from a 0.1 oz mini. So cute. Perfumeshrine gives this as Coromandel’s twin peak, and Coromandel has thus far been the only Chanel that I like – but not at Chanel prices.
So far so good with the Zino, there are definitely patchouly, tobacco and benzoin notes, so similar to Coromandel thus far.
To Robin: I laughed at your Marie Kondo kitchens being the worst. I absolutely agree.
For people into inspirational podcasts, the podcast lady’s name is Gretchen Rubin (I got it wrong yesterday). Not my cup of tea, personally, but a good friend is a fan. Happy Friday Eve!

The Chanel prices have been pretty ridiculous in the past few years. I remember when the Les Exclusifs line was actually pretty reasonably priced bit not anymore. I am not exactly happy with the Les Exclusifs switching to an edp version. They claim that customers were wanting it but I think that it’s either new restrictions or it was cheaper to make.

I really like the Gretchen Rubin podcasts because her premise seems to be “fix it if it is keeping you from being happy, but if it is just the comments from other people that bug you, then here is how you might want to deal with them…”

?? Everything’s coming up roses…??. I combined Ta’if body lotion with another, lighter rose lotion and then sprayed Ta’if generously. Making me happy.

And I finished a hat last night that turned out really well. Such an easy pattern too. I may make a scarf and give it away or I may keep it because it goes pretty well with a wool chunky scarf I made a few weeks ago… decisions decisions….

Thanks! It’s actually the yarn itself that is such pretty colors. I added the scarf I made to Instagram because I realized they do go well together… the scarf is a chunky wool that is a beautiful, deep yarn.

I have another skein of the hat yarn, so I’ll make another to give away.

I am ready to kick someone. I am tired of making phone calls and having to wait a half an hour or more to talk to anyone to answer my questions. I want to finish this thing and then relax. The sleeves of my nightgown have the remnants of Jubilation 25 but I feel anything but joyous. I think that I will be wearing Chanel no 5 whenever I can get off the phone and into the shower. “Important caller” my foot, if I were that important, somebody one the phone would be talking to me right now.

The root canal treatment was smooth. Of course I was kinda anxious, but the worst part was the discomfort (lying with your mouth open for 45 minutes)

I wore jardin après la mousson, not too heavy but very comforting

I watched australian open during the root canal
Those Poor guys and girls…top sport under those circumstances….?

They have a television on the ceiling for years now.

My dentist gave me the remote saying “you can choose yourself…..say yes to the dress, men restoring old cars whatever” ? (she is a funny and kind lady)….

Yes daytime television is horrible here (and in most countries I guess),
so live top sport was the best option ?

The bill was scary of course, but not as scary as I expected….255 euro.

First wearing this year not counting vacation wear. As is fitting, kitteh Billy Bob posed nicely with my bottle … no cattitude whatsoever!

In other news, now that I have my morning Starbucks identified (they know me by name, how I want my coffee and how I want my egg bites packaged), I’ve set my sights on expanding my lunch options. I am experimenting with a Chinese food place so that I will eventually know the sure thing to order going forward. Although I am generally adventurous, lunch to me during a workday should be good, doesn’t necessarily have to be cheap, but should be somewhat predictable as I don’t want to think too hard about what to have for lunch!

    I’m in Civet this AM.

Last night I wore Maurice Roucel’s Nez experiment Hongkong Oolong to bed. I look forward to trying that one out in warmer weather.

A while ago I passed along to my husband a decant of FM’s Promise, which was just a little too much oudiness for me (although there is no oud listed in the notes, it has that vibe). He sniffs it every once and a while. But since he works in a scentfree office in a hospital, and because he just never got into wearing perfume or cologne, I am not sure how often he actually applies it or any of “his” (like what I did there?) perfumes. Anyway, I caught him huffing his wrist last night! And then he proceeded to wax rhapsodic about Promise. I told him, “what you are feeling and thinking right this moment, is what every perfumista feels!” Ding ding ding!

It reminds me of Indochine but softer and a little sweeter but only in a generic/ similar genre way. It has less projection and It is a little less masculine to me. Much softer and a tiny bit sweeter. It changes to a skin scent very quickly on me but I don’t know how it works for others.

I’m wearing Anatole Lebreton Bois Lumiere and can definitely smell the immortelle. I think this may be my favorite perfume where I can actually pick up on the immortelle note. It is present but well-balanced to my nose. I find it to be kind of a cross between Chypre Rogue and Chypre Mousse. I’m very glad to have found an inexpensive travel spray on eBay right after I sampled this.

I have seen most of the feral cats dissapeared in my block. Just 2 left and they look kind of sick now. It looks like the woman who used to feed them it is not doing it anymore. I go late at night and leave several cans of wet food on the sidewalk. I have seen one of them eating and no food left next day. I am sure that as soon as the house owner where I leave that food finds out he is going to stop it. The temperature is dropping badly tonight. I am really mortified. Hope they survive.

Yeah, if someone stopped feeding they may have moved on. Or they went to find some warmer place to hang out in.
So kind of you to feed them! I hope the homeowner doesn’t get mad. I’m always careful to clean up after myself so not to draw attention. Leaving food on a small piece of paper near the curb is a good trick or dry food right on the ground. Could be raccoons coming to eat, too; we have a bunch in our neighborhood.
It’s amazing how these cats survive living outdoors! I’ve know some of the same ferals out here for years!

Thanks mtg! *I* would think she’d be relieved to be inside, but they have a pretty good shelter set-up and I think they really like their outdoor life- it’s all they know, anyway. I don’t even like camping, lol.

Getting her in the trap was easy- she just in and started eating. Once I triggered it to drop, she looked around for minute and went back to eating. Though a healthier cat would’ve jumped around.

I’m wearing HdP 1740 so I’m doing two CP’s at once. This one has plenty of immortelle and I’m copying Calypso who wore this yesterday. I haven’t tried all of the HdP’s, but out of the old ones this is by far my most favourite HdP. That rich and decadent dry down is to die for.

Spent the afternoon in Amsterdam to visit a Rembrandt exhibit in the Rijksmuseum. It was too crowded to fully enjoy it, but boy, what a painter.

Tea is Jardin des Songes, to soothe my aching brow!

Is this the Sade one? I liked that one, too. HdP has many scents I want to try. Plus, they have small sizes!

Yep, it is Marquis de Sade. I like Histoires de Parfums a lot. They have a great amber, a nice spicy rose, and plenty of other pretties. I wasn’t very smitten with their tuberose trio, but I hardly ever like all the fragrances from one line.

I like the tuberose virginale quite a lot, and Abrarem, and 1873 Colette.

Was it the Rembrandt-Velazquez exhibition? I totally forgot about that one…
Rijksmuseum is so crowded nowadays. It seems busier than 20 years ago, or is it just me? Of course its good they have lots of visitors of course, but sometimes you want to enjoy a work of art in a quiet ambience ?

Rembrandt Velazquez it was. It was doable but not as enjoyable as it might have been.
I had hoped to see Hendrickje Stoffels taking a bath there (the painting of course) because it was absent in London but it wasn’t here either.
I love some of the Spanish paintings but my favourite for portraits is Rembrandt. Those paintings look back at you in a totally human way.
I’m tired too and need to get to bed. I tend to completely forget words in my sentences when I’m exhausted ?

Me too, I love how he present himself and the other people he paints as real people, with all their flaws.
He must have been a great observer of human behaviour.

Everything feels like it’s getting more crowded :( And I’m glad that more people have the disposable income to travel and to see these world wonders, but it would be nice if I could enjoy things more peacefully.

Btw you made me look for my 1740 sample…its been ages since I tried it but its gorgeous (last year was the year I started to get more into leather notes…so this all makes sense haha)

The only other HdP I tried was 1725, but the lavender-vanilla-almond combo is NOT for me (and probably never will be)

That goes to show how different we all are: it’s one of my favourite pairings. Admittedly the 1725 one is very, very sweet, but then it also has anise.

Have you tried 1876? It’s a nice, gentle spicy rose.

Today the sun is out and the skies are blue, but we are only at 12 degrees. It’s the kind of day that called for something cozy like Casmir.
I’m currently waiting for a sample pack from luckyscent to arrive. My resolution last year was to stop paying for samples, and I was pretty good. Just one order in June. This year I didn’t make any resolutions.? Ever on the hunt for the perfect musk/skin scent.

You might like Kitten from Catbird, which I just got for my niece. I had the solid which they don’t make anymore. The was as hard as a taper candle. The edt formulary is much better. It’s kind of a milky musk with a hint of lipstick.

Controlled chaos here today. We had the HVAC system replaced. A bunch of guys showed up at 8am and worked their butts off until 4-ish in the afternoon. No lunch break. The cats were well and truly freaked out while all this was happening. ??

SOTD = back in Relique d’Amour today. I didn’t have time to think about perfume this morning and was happy to grab the sample. Might be time to think about a decant of this one…

A spritz of Ozkan from Sylvaine Delacourte’s orange blossom line. Mildly leathery is a good descriptor, and the immortelle is present but not driving the bus like it is in Helicriss from her vanilla collection.

This evening: trying Chergui. Although reviews say that it has a strong tobacco note, apparently it’s not the sort of tobacco note that bothers me. Perhaps that’s because the fragrance smells fairly sweet to me, too. I rather like it.
