Friday scent of the day 1/10

Posted by Robin on 10 January 2020 213 Comments

It's Friday and National Bittersweet Chocolate Day. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance by Ormonde Jayne, Olivier Durbano, Odin New York or Olfactive Studio, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter O.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in Ormonde Jayne Ta'if.

Reminder: on 1/17, wear a fragrance with immortelle, if you have one. Suggested by Hamamelis.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

        Hi twin! :)

I think it should go well with snow – Tiare has a Cristalle-like crispiness, even though it is warmer and sweeter (at least to me).

It’s grey and wet here, and Tiare is like sunshine in a bottle.

      Hello Twin. You smell marvelous!
I am going to do a side by side comparison of this with the
Elixir version later on today. I keep thinking that the Elixir is less green- hemlock or violet being the notes I think apply – but not sure yet. I wonder what would happen if I layer them?

        • perfumelover67 says:
          10 January 2020 at 10:38 am

I like both, but the EdT is smokier on me, which I prefer. I also love the EdC for warmer weather. But nothing beats the beauty of the perfume.

Are you wearing a modern current version? I need to find my sample of so. Smokier sounds great. I am so scared of this perfume – simply by reputation of being a masterpiece. I think there is something in the guerra in-ade that gets amp’ed in my skin so I am never sure where to begin. But I love the distant cousins that get referenced to it ……..

          • Lovestosmellgood says:
            10 January 2020 at 7:31 pm

That is a good question..which version?
Have you tried any of the vanille flankers?

        • perfumelover67 says:
          10 January 2020 at 9:11 pm

I bought my EdT bottle in 2009. Definitely, not vintage, but not the latest version which is less smokier and richer, in my opinion.

    Greetings from Paris!
Sending this from a very cosy hotel in the city centre.
Place Vendôme is just around the corner (when I hang out of my window i can see the BVLGARI store there).

I wanted to wear Ormonde Jayne Tiare today but somehow forgot where I stowed away my sample urgh
(i had it in my hand yesterday…haha but in my morning rush I probably put it on a weird shelf or somewhere in the kitchen ?)

So now I am wearing Jubilation XXV (‘for men’) from my sample.
    No points for me.

But i am still wondering where I left the Ormonde Jayne vial….hahaha

Ormonde Man, very nice, very woody, a good way to do oud if you’re going to wear oud. A decade ago, back before they became grawnd instead of merely niche, before they started selling samples for $10 each, I bought that 10-sample set that they used to have, the one with the two drawers that slid in opposite directions when you pulled the ribbon — how has it been a decade? — and I still haven’t emptied any of the spray vials, but I like to open that sliding drawer every now and then and make a choice. Some day I’ll probably buy Ta’if.

Sampling Flashback in New York by Olfactive Studio. Just a couple drops, because Fragrantica said that it was cumin heavy and I have to be around others today…and it is, but only at first. It settles into a a soft leathery-woody scent after half an hour or so. I’m not in love with it, but it’s not the sweaty mess I was afraid of.

Received my sample packs from Zoha Aromas yesterday, and am completely off CP with Eidolon, from their Inspired Collection. This particular scent is inspired by By Kilian Black Phantom. Impressive thus far. I have never sample Black Phantom, so I couldn’t tell you if Eidolon is reminiscent of BP, but I like it a lot already. It is a gourmand, but it’s not nearly as sweet or sugary as one might expect given the list of notes.

    Happy Friday, everybody!

Seems to be, but with a few original scents, as well. A nicely middle eastern vibe, and they offer both perfumes and perfume oils. They are in Canada, and aside from the shipping, they have a good sample program, of which I took advantage. I think somebody here mentioned them about a month or so ago, and so I went to take a look, and ended up sampling.

I like it. :) Mom just complained about me wearing perfume. I said, “I’ve washed my wrists several times since this morning. Maybe it got on my watchband or the sleeves of my hoodie.” I was wearing hoodies a lot this past week. I think there are the remnants of spritzes or dabs of the several sorts of Ormonde Jayne perfume samples I tried this week in the sleeves of about six of my sweatshirts. lol. These Ormonde Jayne perfumes are persistent.

Next time I do a perfume testing day out of the house, I may try some amber fragrances. I like that balsam and/or resin sort of scent.

I had forgotten how wonderful this one is. I had to interrupt Indie Week to wear this as I consider this line niche. I was hoping to wear an O indie line but I did not like any of the 3 perfumes I sampled.

    Looking forward to the weekend!

Here’s my funny perfume shopping story. A friend lived in the UAE and we visited Oman together. I wanted perfume and there was a lovely small shop, very personal. I know oud can be very polarizing but it’s extremely popular in the Middle East and I love it. The shop owner was so kind and helpful but he was baffled by my refusal to mix my oud with a floral like women do there. I wanted straight up oud! That’s a MAN’S scent, women buffer it with rose, jasmine or a mixture. He really didn’t get that I wanted pure oud for myself and that I wasn’t buying it for my husband. I sniffed several offerings, different oil from various countries and settled on one from Cambodia. When he finally got that YES it truly was for me, he insisted on decanting it into a lovely very feminine bottle; pale blue with painted flowers. He commented that I must have powerful forces within me to handle oud. LOL, of course being American he was already giving me a pass.

LLOL, too funny! A friend of mine just visited Dubai, and she was overwhelmed by all the Oud worn there.
She had a grand time visiting the Henry Jacques boutique though.

Another funny part; my friend was/is NOT a fan of oud. She had to sit there as I tested and sniffed for almost an hour. This shop sold basically nothing but oud in various formats.

            She’s a good friend LOL

        • SmokeyToes says:

One lesson learned though, I made the mistake of asking a non-perfume-wearing friend to pick up oud for me when she was visiting Morocco and Turkey. I insisted that was the ONLY perfume oil I was interested in.
She brought back clove oil instead, stating oud smelled so awful, why would anyone wear that if they weren’t forced to??

            10 January 2020 at 3:23 pm

I know, right?? Believe me, I could have won a Best Actress Oscar for behaving so pleased and surprised.
And believe it or not, apparently people are a fan of wearing clove oil! The common popular mix is vanilla, patchouli and a drop of clove oil. I tried it once and it made my skin soooo red. Not for me.

Spent yesterday gardening and this morning I understood the real benefit of having a long hall passage….it allows time and distance for your ankles and knees to reestablish their bend function and for your back to straighten between getting up from bed and putting the kettle on in the kitchen.

I like the fancy ‘O’ in today’s image and all the other images on that Flickr link. I could wear Olympic Orchids California Chocolate but I am testing Bee instead. I got a sample yesterday. I like the honey but am not sure about the rest of it.

It is good, isn’t it. So many great Australian movies…especially small budget. I watched Animal Kingdom again last night for a Ben Mendelsohn kick ( and Guy Pearce). Another Hugo Weaving suggestion is the series Patrick Melrose…Benedict Cumberbatch is the wealthy heroin addict and HW is his father ( awful, abusive character). Jennifer Jason Leigh is also in it. HW often seems to take sexually ambigious roles.

Sadly, we also got snowed out of our lunch date at the friendly neighbourhood pub. It started another dump early this morning, so we decided to come home instead rather than risk it. Supposed to snow all weekend, then temperatures will drop to crazy record lows on Monday.

I love the Friday community projects for many reasons and, today, in order to play, it’s forcing me to step out of my comfort zone (a good thing!). As a seasonal fragrance wearer, I would ordinarily never wear a spring floral fragrance ahead of the heavy rain/ice/sleet/snow that’s coming my way tonight/tomorrow, but since I want at least a few points, I will be brave and do it!

I don’t have any of the brands listed but I do have what I consider to be a small “o”: SOTD is Annie Oakley Morning Dew, which is described as beginning the day in a country cottage with lilacs drenched in raindrops. It is a lovely floral with a strong lilac note, and if I close my eyes, I can make the leap and be there! I happened upon the Annie Oakley perfumery when touring the area a few years ago and would highly recommend a tour should you find yourself in the Amish country of northeastern Indiana. The perfumery is located in Ligonier, just south of Shipshewana, and its story is an interesting one.

After a quick trip for some groceries, I’m planning on tucking in with books and cats – and perhaps lilacs! – for the rest of the weekend. Wishing everyone lovely days ahead!

I’ve been to the Annie Oakley shop! Ligonier is a nice town and that’s a fun area to visit, picturesque with all of the Amish buggies and gorgeous flower gardens. To be honest, I didn’t much care for any of the scents, but it was still a very interesting place to visit.

Most of the women’s scents were too floral for my taste -I favor woods/oriental and sometimes green scents, gourmand in winter, but I do love a lilac note and Morning Dew does this very nicely. Also, she has some very nice essential oils and household items.

I’m checking in late in Ormonde Woman, which I am discovering smells almost entirely of thyme on me. Ah well!

I would have worn that today had I not been sick. You smell great.

Posting late today! I don’t have any bittersweet chocolate in my stash, but I do have plenty of dark chocolate, so that will have to do. ??

SOTD = Oriza L. Legrand Reve d’Ossian EdP again, from the sample stash. If they had 30mL or even 50mL bottles, I’d have this one in my perfume collection. The 100mL size makes me sigh with regret. I suspect I will have a few house twins today… maybe even a scent twin.

Well, um….they do sell 50ml bottles and refills on their website, but I have no idea what their shipping charges are. Another option would be to find out if Suzanne Becker of Shop France Inc. could pick one up for you during one of her trips.

Ruh roh! That is some dangerous knowledge! But it won’t hurt to put Reve d’Ossian on the FB wishlist now, will it?

It’s good to know that it’s attainable in a size you can manage! Now you can either yearn to attain it asap even more or let it languish on your FB wishlist for an eternity. Options!

Olympic Orchids Seattle Chocolate. Yum. Not sweet, but that’s okay! Chocolate, vanilla and musk. ❤️

So. Very. Sick. I think it’s the flu. Super bummed because I would have rocked O week. This is what I would have chosen, all OJs (and some of my favs)- Osmanthus, Tiare, Ta’if, Tolu, and would have ended in Woman. ?

Feel better soon! I am still not fully recovered from the nasty cold that I got 3 weeks ago. A persistent cough is still bothering me.

Oh ick. I hope it’s not the flu… one of my friends has it and he is a mess right now. Poor guy is on a ton of medicines.

SotD = Oscar by Oscar de la Renta

Almost playing along with today’s theme, and almost twins with Creosote today. :D

From an old, sealed bottle that I found online . . . it smells as good as the stuff I bought in the early 1990s. Alas, it gives me a headache. I do love it so much, a true syphonic floral perfume, as lovely as vintage L’air du Temps.

Hope everyone had a fantabulous Friday.

For some reason, I missed 90s Oscar but I do remember loving L’air du Temps. I hope your headache goes away soon.

That’s a pity your vintage find gave you a headache. I hope you feel better now. Did Oscar always disagree with you?

thanks, Jalapeno! I do feel better today. ;) Oscar was fine for me when I wore it back in the day, LOL, so I’m not sure if the bottle I have is different and has something in it that causes the headache, or have I changed and now I’m sensitive to something that causes it. There are a number of perfumes that have changed on me in this way, even modern ones – Infusion d’Iris and a few of the Atelier Colognes. Oh well, there’s too much perfume to worry about it!

?? Yay for almost-twins! You smell wonderful! What a bummer that it’s a headache-maker for you. Do you think you could enjoy it by sniffing it at a distance from a blotter?

You know what’s funny? Oscar is one of my mother’s signature scents precisely because it *doesn’t* cause her headaches! And I absolutely adore the scent of it on her, but it really does not work on my skin at all. Truly, YMMV, right?!
