Thursday scent of the day 1/2

Posted by Robin on 2 January 2020 273 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday, happy National Science Fiction Day, and happy 9th day of Christmas (ladies dancing). What fragrance are you wearing?

I’m taking a community project point in Bvlgari Eau Parfumée au Thé Bleu.

Reminder: on 1/3, wear a fragrance to match Classic Blue, Pantone's color of the year for 2020. ("A timeless and enduring blue hue, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue is elegant in its simplicity. Suggestive of the sky at dusk, the reassuring qualities of the thought-provoking PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue highlight our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era. Imprinted in our psyches as a restful color, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue brings a sense of peace and tranquility to the human spirit, offering refuge. Aiding concentration and bringing laser like clarity, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue re-centers our thoughts. A reflective blue tone, Classic Blue fosters resilience.")

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Keeping up with my own animalic theme I am in Amouge Beloved.
    Purrrrrrrfect
I love the dirty animalic rose opening

I am sipping chai tea and listening to Le Trio Joubran which is 3 brothers playing the oud. Goes well with my chai tea and Beloved.

I’ve listened to them before – quite good. I have their Majaz album. In a more fusion-y vein, I also like the Ensemble Aromates album titled Rayon de Lune.

No points for me today, but my scented year is off to a good start with Incense Rosé. Kind of a sparkly purple-pink in my head, the color of NST purple but with more blush.

Analytics on 2019 perfume usage are complete! (“Analytics” is quite a highfalutin word for the simplistic spreadsheet counting I did.) I did have a number of unscented days, which makes sense given the circumstances of the past several months.

My most worn fragrances were Passage d’Enfer (a repeat most-worn from 2018) and Jour d’Hermès extrait de parfum, each of which I wore 12 times. These were followed by Camel, Mohur, Safran Troublant, and Amari, each of which I wore 11 times. In 2018, by comparison, I wore my most-worn fragrance only eight times.

In terms of most-worn houses, l’Artisan Parfumeur rang in at 35 times, followed by Hermès at 24 times. In 2018, I wore Hermès 26 times, while l’AP came in at a lowly third place with 17 times. (Serge Lutens was #2 with 18 times in 2018, which fell to #6 with 14 uses.)

In general, I rewore perfumes more in 2019. I wore 153 (!!) unique perfumes in 2019, while I wore 201 unique perfumes in 2018. That is consistent with my lower sampling rate of 2019; I’m much less interested in discovering new perfumes now than I was the year before.

In 2020, I hope to continue to focus my attentions on my favorite scents. As I purchase less and spend more time with my collection, I look forward to polishing off more of those swiftly evaporating decants so my collection is whittled down to my manufacturers’ bottles only. I do want to buy a FB of Camel (I have maybe 1/3 of a travel spray right now). There are plenty of other things I would like to buy but really shouldn’t, so 2020 may only see the purchase of a single bottle :)

That’s all of my end-of-year perfume analyses/resolutions. What are yours?

I enjoyed reading your breakdown. I didn’t keep track, but can tell you off the bat that all my lovely, unique perfumes (Lutens looking at you: MdB, FeA, Chypre Rouge, even Santal Majuscule), did not get much wear. Safe for work is a consideration and Hermes, Bas de Soie and Etro Shaal Nur were staples.

Ah yes, that’s a good point! Some of our favorites don’t get much skin time because of their unfriendliness to those around us :( and most Hermèses are lovely or at least sheer enough to avoid that exclusion! I’ve really enjoyed keeping track of my perfumes for the past two years in a simple spreadsheet, and I hope to continue doing it in the foreseeable future.

I love reading breakdowns like this! They fall into the same category as the perfume cabinet posts for me.

My empties for the year: 76 samples, 12 decants and 1 full bottle. My 2018 total was 81 samples and 2 full bottles.

I’m kind of surprised the numbers were so close, since 2018 was a quieter year emotionally than 2019, by far.

Someone inquired yesterday about top 10 desert island fragrances. Man, that’s a tough question. A couple stand out, like Shalimar and Coco, but I didn’t get much farther. ?

WOW! That’s a lot of empties. What were your full bottle empties for both years? I should start tracking when I empty things, too.

That is a tough question. Let’s see, I’d need Camel, Mohur, Jour d’Hermès extrait, Passage d’Enfer, Ambre Narguilé, Cedrat Enivrant, LADDM, Incense Rosé, Vétiver (Guerlain), and Honey and Crocus. That’s ten. There’s a lot of arbitrariness, especially for slots 6 – 10, but I’d be pretty happy for the ten I picked? I think? Hmmmmm. Maybe if I could have a top 20, it would be easier.

My 2018 empties were Lavanila Vanilla Lavender and Caudalie The Des Vignes Eau Fraiche. I emptied a lavender sleep spray from Origins this year. It’s funny, all three of these I used in the evening before bed. I have yet to empty a daytime use fragrance! ?

I’d definitely have LADDM on my list, and Coco and Shalimar as well.

Nice! My most worn was a 3-way tie for first place with 9 wears each for Dilettante, Terracotta and Dear Polly. Favorite discoveries of the year were Chinchilla, T. Rex, and Corsica Furiosa. I’m sort of the opposite of you – I am interested in sampling more this year, and buying less FBs. Because my collection is big enough, but I still want to know what is out there!

Hi Koyel, I’ve been in and out this year so missed a lot, but I am sorry you had a tough one. A really tough one it sounds like. On perfume, I started using the basenotes scent of a day about a year ago, which might be a bad way to do it as I am always afraid somehow it is going to disappear, but for now I can say that my most worn — with the note that I often where more than one perfume in a 24 hour period:
      Dryad 29
      Misia 26
      Bruma 24
      Azemour les Orangers 20
      Bengale Rouge 20
      A Chaque Instant 19
      I Miss Violet 18
      Suede de Suede 17
      Capri 16
      Tobacco Rose 15

The upper end are things I love and that are also good for work. (Not sure how I define that, but there you go.)

I also wore a lot of Trimerous, which isn’t on the Basenotes data base!

Hoping 2020 is a good one for you!

I love your list. It sounds beautiful. I’d be worried about not finding all my perfumes on Basenotes, too—that’s why I prefer then customizability of Excel. I hope your list doesn’t disappear on you!

I was wondering if you’d bought Camel b4 the end of 2019. Congrats on exercising restraint! Wow your list and summary is so impressive – I should try this while I only have 2 days into the new year. Some of the ideas yesterday were also inspiring and I think I will focus on my newer decants so that they don’t evaporate. That is some good focus for me to keep me from any new buys. My curiosity gets the better of me too often.

SotD is Le Cri de la lumière
Because ElisaP wore it earlier this week and reminded me of its existence and how lovely it is ?

Its effortlessly elegant, and this works for me even though I am not a big fan of rose notes.
This may end up on my fb wishlist when my sample is empty…..

    Feliz Ano Nuevo!

Leaving for the airport shortly after a whirlwind vacation in Mexico City.

SOTD = Chanel No.5 L’Eau from my super cute travel spray.

I am going home 3 perfumes lighter ?. At one of the lunches, a fellow traveler mentioned that her 19 year old granddaughter asked for perfume. Scent – vanilla. So the table got to talking about perfumes in general and trying out perfumes, returning perfumes, etc. Anyway, the granddaughter ended up getting Clinique Happy which I would have never pegged as a vanilla perfume. So I told the grandma that I would be happy sending her other perfumes to try. In addition, last night, I gave her the remains of my Mugler Aura sample, Cedrat Enivrant 4 mL travel spray with perhaps .75mL left and Bergamote Soleil with 3mLs left. So while these did not go into an empty metal trash can, I felt like I started the year off with a very virtuous Thunk Thunk Thunk which had to take the place of ? ?? since I plain forgot yesterday!

Jour parfum is absolute perfection. I have more back-ups than I care to admit to.

I started 2019 by wearing a different perfume every day, to make sure I’d worn everything in my collection. (I made it June, which seemed short!) This year I’m just going to wear what I want, which can be hard to narrow down….

Spending the morning in vintage Shalimar and spent a half an hour paying some of those pesky bills. I am still arguing with myself right now. Coco Mademoiselle? No 5? Should I even get anymore perfume at all? I don’t know why this is so difficult, I haven’t bought a full bottle since August but haven’t finished a full bottle in months. Not being able to wear perfume at work is slowing the emptying of bottles. I can get away with a tiny dab on me knees much later in my shift. I am going to see the new Star Wars movie this afternoon and I think that a dab of no 19 will do.

I would go with what you would wear more…
For me Coco Md use to be a love for me but I feel like its not the same as it used to be..
No 5 is elegant but I wouldn’t be able to wear it everyday but then the bottle would last longer..

At first spray, I liked the intense version better than the current CM, but it dries down more chemically smelling, because of this I still prefer the original. It is darker and more intense though.

I can’t think of a fragrance I have that matches the Pantone color of the year, at least in my mind. Maybe I can think of one that contrasts nicely…a lime green accent might look cool with that blue. I’ll dig around for a fragrance with lime.

Wearing Skin Deep by CJ Scents today – it’s a cedar musk that turns into a long-lasting, soft background skin scent.

Happy New Year! I already wrote “2019” twice today. One of those was on my rent check ?
I woke up earlier than my alarm for a change so spent some time puttering around in my drawer digging out samples, a few unlabeled. I have what smells like Amouage Interlude on one hand (it’s fairly unmistakable), and I think is either Atelier Rose Anonyme or the eponymous Pinrose perfume on the other. Ended up with a small spritz of FM Dans tes Bras on my wrists.

I’ve been puttering in the perfume piles, too. I feel a bit restless, like it’s time to do things differently.

I’m a bit perfume-restless, too. I think I’m just not as drawn to cold weather perfumes as I used to be. I *could* just wear all the lighter fare, but then I feel bad for snubbing my heavier stuff.

BWF FTW in 2020! lol :D

JdB always makes me smile. Reminds me of a florist’s shop, all the smells of all the flowers, but warm, not refrigerated.

Taking down the Christmas tree today, feeling a little sad to see it go. Until next year then, good-bye little Santas and snowflakes and stars.

Hope everyone has something to feel thankful for on this first Thursday of the year.

Happy New Year to all, since I did not get here yesterday. One of my resolutions is to enjoy my current collections more and wear special scents everyday!! To that end, I am in Amouage LYRIC and loving it, although it is competing with the excellent beef stew that is perking away in the slow cooker….

Hello Everyone, and Happy New Year!

Haven’t been around lately; sooo much drama. In the month of December, I was laid off from my employer of 19 years. So, job hunting and paperwork, etc. Because my employer provided my housing, also had to move. Within the next two weeks, will start a new job and become a first time college student at the age of 39. Yep, busy.

SOTD is E&J Nirvana Black, from a little rollerball I forgot I had but found when packing. Oh my goodness, the things we tuck into drawers and closets and forget about until we have to pack the whole house up…

I am thinking of marine blue for the CP… So Epice Marine. I associate ‘blue’ with some of the perfumes I have tried on the men’s side of our department store’s perfume counter…all mainstream like Le Male, Cool Blue, anything ‘Aqua’ …sea breezy, ozone. Later I will switch to my sample of Paris-Deauville for the same coastal vibe. Wearing a breton tshirt and denim and about to put out the washing.

I’m wearing SL Le Participe Passe today, and it is one of the few “newer” SL scents that I’ve liked. SL was a house that I fell in love with early on, but the offerings over the last several years have disappointed. Le Participe Passe is a throwback, for which I am grateful.

I agree with you on the disappointing recent releases from Serge Lutens, and on the return to form with Participe Passé. An FB is on its way to me from Fragrancenet.

It seems to me to be in a similar vein to Participe Passé. It’s got a touch of the SL stewed fruit that I like. It’s got oud, but not too much, which suits me.
Despite a decade or more of perfume addiction, I’m still hopeless at describing them :)

I actually have a 5ml decant of Le Participe Passe that I’m looking to swap out because it didn’t work on me. I need immortelle to be so well blended that I can barely tell it’s in a perfume, and it’s quite prominent in PP to me. If you’re looking for more and are interested in a little swap, just let me know!

Thanks, therabbitsflower – I think I’m good with the big decant that I have. I absolutely love immortelle, in just about every perfume that I’ve tried that’s had it. After about an hour or two, though, it starts to wear me out. :-)

I think the best I can do for the CP is say that classic blue makes me think of powdery iris and/or medicinal, herbaceous lavender. So today I’m back to work wearing Infusion d’Iris, basically the polar opposite of the Bengale Rouge I wore yesterday.

Scent at bedtime/early this morning: Serge Lutens Gris Clair. Not on project, but I was curious to try it. I liked it all right, but it’s not a love. It lasted a lot longer than the light citrus sorts of things I’ve been wearing more often than not lately.

I should make a resolution to work on trying the samples I have before getting more. Or, at least, try five or so I have before getting a sample of something new to me. I just need somewhere that’s not the house to do so! (lol)

Noting that I inadvertently celebrated science fiction day by reading The Steampunk Bible. I don’t have the skills to make the clothing or jewelry involved in dressing up, but I have read some of the books. I’m not into grim, dystopian worlds with mechanical devices, but I’m generally good with the lighter-hearted stories in that sub-genre.

Was in Kelly Calèche today… for a trip to DMV to give them everything but bloodwork to get the Enhanced ID that will be required to fly later this year…. I had an appointment, so it actually took very little time. Gathering the documents took more time.

Then an appointment for interview later in the afternoon…nothing specific, more an intro and general discussion. It was fairly close to the Hermès perfume boutique downtown, so I was able refresh my scent before my meeting…

Thankfully, my voice held out. Had a sore throat and cold coming on over the last day. Now that I’m home, I’m much croaker. My husband and I seem to have this bizarre tradition of giving each other colds as New Year’s presents… About to drown myself in herbal tea and honey. So looking forward to bed…
