Wednesday scent of the day 1/1

Posted by Robin on 1 January 2020 245 Comments

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit, and welcome to 2020! It’s also the 8th day of Christmas (maids a-milking) and the last day of Kwanzaa. (And don't forget that Donatella will be dropping by Friday to clear out last year’s damage.) What fragrance are you wearing to usher in the new year?

I’m starting off with Hermès Eau de Néroli Doré, and when that fades I am planning on Aftelier Candide.

Reminder: on 1/3, wear a fragrance to match Classic Blue, Pantone's color of the year for 2020. ("A timeless and enduring blue hue, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue is elegant in its simplicity. Suggestive of the sky at dusk, the reassuring qualities of the thought-provoking PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue highlight our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era. Imprinted in our psyches as a restful color, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue brings a sense of peace and tranquility to the human spirit, offering refuge. Aiding concentration and bringing laser like clarity, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue re-centers our thoughts. A reflective blue tone, Classic Blue fosters resilience.")

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Herend Royal Bunny Sapphire ("Herend's porcelain figurine collection is completely handpainted by talented artisans at the Herend factory in Hungary with each detailed piece trimmed in 24kt. gold.") is $295 at FX Dougherty Home & Gift.

Going to repeat last year’s resolution of trying more samples than I acquire. I tried 224 scents on skin last year and did manage to come out ahead. Sample of the day is Bluebijou which has a strong blueberry note

Wow. 224! That’s amazing. I didn’t keep track but would guess I was under 25. It was a very busy year with other stuff.

Mercy Lewis from Sixteen92, Golden Wood from The Harmonist, Sharkskin from DSH, Vine Street from Soivohle and I ❤️ YY from Bogue/Luckyscent. I also fell in love with Une Ile, Un Reve from Nana M but haven’t bought it yet and as much as I adore Poeticus from Cultus Artem, a full bottle is too pricey for me

Thanks! I have heard good things about Sixteen92 but haven’t tried anything from that line yet. I had not heard of Cultus Artem before and looked up their prices…yowzers!

    ? ? ?- I remembered!

BK Amber Oud as a comfort scent.. Didn’t sleep well last night (I heard noises outside at 3 a.m. and started worrying about everything: Australia’s fires, an upcoming trip, work, my son’s job—you know that train of negative thoughts that just goes around and around in your head…). Despite that, I have resolved to be positive today and do what I can this year to make the world a better place. Thanks to NST and perfume friends for making my world better!

That 3-4 am hour is my worry time too when I have insomnia. Fortunately, when I do fall back asleep and get up in the morning, things usually seem less worrisome in the light of a new day. Hope the same holds true for you!

Amber Oud is a first rate comfort scent. I can relate to the middle of night worries. Problems seem to be very big when I don’t feel well, when I’m short on sleep/healthy food and….at 3am! I hope you sleep soundly tonight. ?

Just relaxing at home today. I am looking at the Chanel travel sprays. It’s a debate on either Coco Mademoiselle or no 5. It’s a pity they don’t do travel sprays of no 19. Does Donnatella count travel sets as a full bottle? Testing out L’Air des Alpes this morning. Will switch to vintage BaV after my shower.

You and Robin (and others) know how darned literal-minded I am. (lol) I’m trying various perfumes with Blue in the title. I may go back to Blue Encens on Friday — I enjoyed that one quite a bit. I have a sample or two of L’Heure Bleue (sp?) from lovely NST people. That may be what I try sometime on Thursday.

I was trying to catch up with comments from the last few days. I’d missed a bunch. I’ll get my list for Donatella together. I think it was Austenfan who said something about how she and Donatella were best buds these last few months? I could relate. It was a funny line, but I could relate.

If I remember right, I was pretty good in October, after being very bad in mid- to late September. Then I did a bunch of online perfume shopping on Black Friday, as I noted at the time. I think I was relatively good in December? I remember exploring the Fresh perfume and body product section at the local Sephora, and getting some perfumes there…

Brighter and lighter blues than the classic are good colors for me to wear, but I think that darker classic blue would wash me out. I hesitate to judge too much by a color as seen on the computer. The colors Mom and I saw in an L.L. Bean online catalog were quite different than the colors of the blouses we got in the mail. The colors online were much brighter and stronger. I’d say the real-life colors were saddened in comparison to the online photos, but they were also lighter in color. Anyway…

Happy new decade! I’m relaxing and drinking lots of mint tea. Today I cracked open a new bottle of Las Flores from Provision Scents. It’s supposed to smell like Malibu. I definitely think it smells like California, and I adore it.

I love the Pantone color this year. I’m having a hard time trying to pair it with a perfume.

Have a cheerful and relaxing day!

I completely forgot about the rabbits, as I slept badly because of all the noise. New Year’s Eve was its usual chaotic self in the Netherlands. We tend to be quite a calm country but we go mad with a vengeance on the 31st of December. Lots of people injured and I believe even two people died in firework related injuries.

On a happier note I’m wearing the lovely and understated Satin Doll by Ys Uzac.

Then I’m going to make German Pancakes (some call them Dutch Babies) while Mr. G makes lattes. Life is pretty good despite the interrupted sleep. Happy 2020, everyone! ??

So I asked the teacher why 108 – apparently that’s the number of beads on the mala prayer bead necklaces, and has other significant meanings. But yes it’s a lot!

    Happy New Year, everyone!

I’ve been absent from posting due to a slow boil of work and family medical drama. Most of it should wrap up in the next couple of days, and no one has died, so I will soon be through this patch and have more time for the fun stuff like perfume. We are going to make this a great year, with less drama and more fun, no matter what.

No perfume as I’m still sick, but hopefully by this weekend, I will have my nose back.

Perfume resolution— find a swap for a partial bottle of LL Rose 31. Otherwise, I’m quite content.

    Happy 2020!

My goal this year is to pare down unloved perfumes. I plan to sell or swap 6 bottles by 7/1. Seems realistic and attainable.

I’m also going to make a dent in what I already have…that goes for perfume and makeup. More days than not, I feel the need for one more new lipstick or blush and I have several I haven’t even opened yet.

I forget the exact year Vanilla Quest began it’s safe to say the journey will continue in 2020…please join me… ;)

Back to dull grey drizzle. We spent all of yesterday in hazy yellow twilight with the smell of smoke in the air ( smoke blown 2000km from Australia). Today the colours in the garden are less surreal and the birds are chirping again. We had a terrific swarm of bees pass through our garden. They moved like a tornado and then stopped for an hour in the trees before rising up in a big column and spiralling off into the pine trees. It was impressive…I read up on scout bees and how they locate new homes and it is mind-blowing.

It’s shocking the smoke from Oz traveled so far that it even affected you and your air there in NZ. Gosh. But the images from various places in Victoria that I’ve seen have been absolutely hellish, with bright red skies and people fleeing onto boats. So very frightening. I gave a donation to one of the organisations helping Australian wildlife, but it feels like a drop in the bucket.

It seems such a devastating situation with no end in sight. The volunteer firefighters are incredibly brave….we saw footage of a truck engulfed in flames as they drove along a road on yesterday’s news….and the financial strain on the volunteers who are missing out on work income due to fire fighting. It’s hard to think about all the creatures caught in the fires, the huge losses.i wonder how Lillibet (?) is doing ….with the Adelaide Hills fires.

We had high winds last night, so Seattle didn’t set off fireworks from the Space Needle like usual. I was so happy to be able to hang out at home and sleep without hearing partiers outside. Where I live there is an unobstructed view of the Space Needle and downtown, so people flock here to see fireworks on NYE and July 4th. I was able to be fast asleep by 11:30 because I just can’t hang anymore, especially after a work day’s 5:45 a.m. wake up.

I still smell like the Lolita Lempicka Midnight (or eau de Minuit? I can’t keep track of the different versions and my decant just says Midnight) that I put on last night since I’m still lounging in my pjs. But I will be wearing Bengale Rouge after my shower to keep me feeling cozy all day. I may thunk my little spray sample from Indigo. I was able to jump in and get the last of adanst’s split. So yay, I have plenty of BR to save me from buying a bottle for a while!

It was a quiet New Year’s Eve for me, except for the neighborhood idiots who can’t tell time and started setting off fireworks at 8:30, scared the poor dog right out of his nap. Fortunately things quieted down pretty quickly. Today is the day I replace things–the toothbrush head, the Clairisonic brush head, and the furnace filter. I do them all quarterly on the first, it’s easy for me to remember. I’m wearing Shalimar Vanilla Mexique.

Here’s hoping your 2020 is wonderful.

I’m continuing my complete confusion on what day it is, so suddenly thought I needed to find something for the CP…forgetting completely that it is Wednesday.

I had already done a spritz of a Mitsouko when I got up, but I just added Eau de Narcisse Bleu…which is not what I want to wear as I fight off a cold. Too harsh. Oh well.

I was in bed by 10:30. I’ve always preferred getting up early on Jan 1 for some reason. Drank coffee, filled out my application for new NY Drivers license, gathered all my documentation so am ready for my appointment tomorrow morning. (Swapping out a CA license…). Half watched Rose Parade and am settling in for football. My team won its Bowl game on Monday, so I got no dog in the hunt today other than certain conference preferences.

Hello everyone. I totally forgot to rabbit this morning. It’s as if I knew it was a new year but forgot that it also meant a new month. Duh! I had a very quiet evening after the “wild” partying at Mom’s senior place in the late afternoon. Seriously–champagne, music, singing and dancing, noise-makers–a fun party! Houston had fireworks downtown but it’s too much of a madhouse to try to go. And as usual people were hurt setting off their own fireworks and one woman was killed when drunk crazy people were shooting off guns into the air “for fun.” Yeah, Texas.

Today I plan to make those golumbki I mentioned yesterday. I’ll let you know how they come out. I realised I’m out of rice so have to go get some.

The Herend rabbit is beautiful, but I can’t see it without an unpleasant memory. Once long ago I was invited to a very wealthy area of town for a party celebrating the Ph.D. of a graduate student in English. She was an older woman and I had served on her committee. Her husband was a bigwig lawyer and the home belonged to one of his clients. My colleagues and I walked around kind of just gawking at everything including unbelievable huge masses of flower bouquets, a terrific food spread, drinks, etc. Among other exquisite objects, the lady of the house had about 1000 Herend animals and objects beautifully displayed. Wow. So anyway, my poor-professor friends and I got our plates filled and found a quiet area to eat in, which was in the guy’s study. That turned out to be filled with memorabilia like signed letters from Eisenhower, Kennedy, Nixon, framed medals, etc. to the guy’s grandfather. Who was Somoza, the president of Nicaragua. Yes, that guy. When we all realised this the food kind of went dry in our mouths. I know I ought not discuss politics but surely nobody would feel pleased taking advantage of that family’s heritage of misdeeds.

I forgot to say, today I’m trying out Cuir Mauresque, gift of a generous NST-er. I didn’t care for it at first, as it’s got some kind of really weird sweet notes, but now it’s growing on me. Someone online mentioned a comparison to L’heure Bleue, and I’m now picking up on that.

Fico di Amalfi as a pick me up scent in the morning.
We had a friend over for dinner, so i made salad with truffle burrata, then homemade pasta with homemade walnut pesto followed by mousse au chocolat with pomegranate seeds. We made it til midnight and went to bed shortly after that. Had a nice long walk in the sun today and ate lentil soup for good luck and money this year.
Yesterday i wore Ambre Russe as a festive scent.

    Happy New Year everyone!?
I’m in White Cube and lounging in my sweatpants. Today feel like it is going to be a lazy day, which is just fine with me. The sun is out and the skies are blue, so far a good start to the year. We’ll probably tune into the Rose Bowl later this afternoon. I’ve given up on trying to keep up with what day of the week it is, all I know is I go back to work in 2 more days.
I don’t have any perfume resolutions but like many others here, I would like to make it through all the samples I have accumulated before getting more (often very difficult for me?) and continue to refine my small collection to true loves. I don’t aspire to have a large collection, I know that works for many, but it feels overwhelming to me. I love lists and wonder if you all had to pick your top 10 desert island favorites, what would they be?
Today mine would be: Vintage Obsession, Casmir, Lea, Le Labo Bergamote 22, Vanille insensee, Tam Dao, Eau Premiere, White Cube, Dune and 10 Corso Como.
I’ll have to check back next year and see if these are still my top 10.?

That was a difficult list to come up with! There’s a lot of beautiful perfume in the world.

Ooh, that’s a great list! We share some favorites…Eau des Merveilles, Wood Sage, Earth Mother and L’ Eau. The Oliver Peoples is Byredo? What’s that one like?
I also need to try Ari’s Saturday and Sunday.

Happy New Year, one and all! We had a low-key evening at a party hosted by some long-term colleagues who are new neighbors, and met some new people there. We were back home and jammied up by midnight. It was a quiet night on our street, but nonetheless I slept very poorly. It is some comfort to read here how many of you had the same trouble.

I baked a loaf of wheat bread this morning, a new-to-me recipe. I have misgivings, but we have not sliced into it yet. For SOTD, I think I may do a blind dive into the sample bin and see what I get.

Happy New Year, fragrant friends! I’ve been MIA just enjoying time with the fam the past week. I have been smelling good though- Floris Honey Oud, Wood Sage & Sea Salt, Edward Bess Genre, Orris & Sandalwood are some I’ve worn this week. Commando thus far, but will probably go with a Chanel for the first day of the new decade!

I’m making a black-eyed pea soup (includes ham, greens, etc) and some cornbread for our New Year meal. Made a wonderful charcuterie tray last night for a party. Had a baked brie with garlic and sundried tomatoes that was soo tasty. Also did another baked brie with nuts, dates, and honey. Yummm. Now to get my healthy eating back in order ha!

Rabbit rabbit rabbit! And Happy New Year! I worked last night and today, but have 4 days off starting tomorrow, I can’t wait! It didn’t even occur to me that this is a new decade, I wasn’t too impressed with the last one. Anyway… wearing Superstious today, and smelling spectacular. My resolution is to get in a position where a little bottle of perfume here and there won’t seem like a big deal. Also, I’m going to try and not sample as much. I would rather wear what I already know I love.

Happy New Year, everyone! I’m in Ummagumma, the last of a gallant sample that seems to keep on giving.

I was walking the dog this morning, and a little girl and her dad rode by on their bikes. She saw my pup, smiled and her eyes lit up with glee. She lolled her tongue out like a dog does and just giggled. It was a moment of spontaneous joy. The new year is here, and I want to be more aware of those moments. Yep, I think that’s my resolution for 2020. ?

I agree, that is an excellent resolution. I had a similar moment recently. I was riding up the escalator into target and a little girl and her mom were a few steps in front of me. She looked to be about 3ish and was wearing her pajamas-which in and of itself just cracked me up- I smiled at her while she held her moms hand and looked back at me. She mouthed the word “Hi” back at me and my heart just melted. She literally made my day.☺️

    Happy new year!

I’m heading to a friend’s afternoon New Years brunch in No 5 Eau Premier, which is suiting me very well today.

I rolled over into the new year looking at increasingly expensive and outlandish light fixtures with my partner, which is, I suppose, starting how I mean to go on in more ways than one.

Happy New Year one and all, creatures great and small!

We are in Los Angeles and my husband and I were able to sneak away for a bit yesterday for perfume sniffing and a great Italian meal. I think I spent over an hour and a half at Scent Bar, and in the end made two purchases of perfumes that were entirely new to me. I bought something call Chronic from a house called 19-69: a mossy, heather-y scent to my nose that reputably has a cannabis note, but fear not. This scent is completely office friendly. The other was Bois Sacre by Arte Profumi, which is billed as a woody oriental, but to my nose has a lovely, slightly naughty amber note that make the scent really addictive.

Anyway, back to the inlaws and guests–but the perfume break was a blast.

Instead of a strongly-worded resolution, a gentle self-reminder to ponder perfume decisions this year. I’d been rather tempted when a local store had 10% off for Covey, of which I had finished a decant pretty quickly last summer. I already have a small bottle of Heeley’s Menthe Fraîche, so this morning put it into a sniff-off against the Covey. The latter lasts longer than the former, but both are pretty nice. Maybe I will make myself finish off the Heeley first…?

Rabbit, rabbit rabbit, and alittle smudge in the house today for starters.
SoTD: Ormonde Jayne Elixir. It suits the weather and the sweeping out of the old and reorganization of the new.
This version of Woman is more assertive, but still very close to the original. The addition of Oud is not overwhelming, I have never sniffed ‘Man’ so I have no reference. It is hemlocky.

?Happy 2020, NST! Wishing you all a year of happiness and good health.?

I’m on my first wearing of Guerlain AA Flora Rosa, which was a blind buy. I had hoped to start off the year with an ‘auspicious’ scent like Amouage Gold but couldn’t manage anything remotely robust with the allergy crud I woke up with. The FR is as light and pretty as I’d hoped and therefore a happy alternative. So, here’s to a year of flexibility, and adaptation then, I guess???‍♀️?

    Have a good one, peeps.

I’m happy for the folks who remembered to “Rabbit” today. I totally spaced it. ⭐?? A very late night for me last night, even if it was a quiet one.

Resolution-wise: I’m thinking that I will try to use up or re-home more of my perfume samples this year. I’ll also go for a “No Buy” or a “Very Low Buy” for perfume. I know better than to make it for a whole year, so I will take it one season/quarter at a time. It’s also time to get back to exercising regularly.

SOTD = Aramis Calligraphy, from the sample stash and Lisa D. I smell like a luxe and somewhat boozy fruit compote. A warming scent for a chilly day. ??????
