Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, Labor Day Weekend 2019

Posted by Robin on 31 August 2019 318 Comments

PSA: our next swapmeet will be on Saturday, 7 September and our next freebiemeet will be on Saturday, 28 September.

Meanwhile, it’s Labor Day weekend in the US. We’re saying goodby to August and hello to September (don’t forget your rabbits on Sunday) with our standard open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, your favorite back-to-school fragrance, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

The daily lemming

Posted by Robin on 31 August 2019 5 Comments

We are having a banner year for tomatoes in my little corner of the world. This is what I need for late September, when caprese season ends: Lycopersicon Esculentum / Tomato room spray from Carrière Frères. "A botanical cloud rises in the sillage of the Carrière Frères’ room spray. Its faceted silhouette is an homage to ancient apothecary jars highlighting the herbalist inspiration behind the brand. Made out of recycled and recyclable glass, it comes in the shape of an apothecary flask and is recognizable to its bluish tint. Capped with an oak top and silver pump, the room spray is filled with a 100% natural alcohol-base." $65 for 200 ml at Aedes.

Emblematic of cultural appropriation

Posted by Robin on 31 August 2019 22 Comments

Fashion brand Dior released a video advertisement Friday morning for its cologne, Sauvage, featuring a Native American dancer in ceremonial garb, including a feathered headdress. The combination of the imagery and the name of the cologne, prompted many on social media to interpret the ad as racist and emblematic of cultural appropriation.

— Read more at Dior accused of racism, cultural appropriation for new 'Sauvage' cologne ad at NBC News, or see Dior perfume ad featuring Johnny Depp criticized over Native American tropes at The Guardian, or use Google — you'll have plenty of choice. If you missed the ad when I posted it yesterday, you're too late because they'd taken it down by the afternoon (although if you look around online you can find clips of the teaser).
