Friday scent of the day 12/27

Posted by Robin on 27 December 2019 182 Comments

Happy Friday and happy Fruitcake Day! It’s also the third day of Christmas (that would be French Hens), the second day of Kwanzaa, and the sixth night of Hanukkah. 5 days to go until 2020! Our community project for today: we're doing best of 2019...wear one of your favorite fragrance releases of 2019.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in Arielle Shoshana Sunday.

Reminder: on 1/3, wear a fragrance to match Classic Blue, Pantone's color of the year for 2020. ("A timeless and enduring blue hue, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue is elegant in its simplicity. Suggestive of the sky at dusk, the reassuring qualities of the thought-provoking PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue highlight our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era. Imprinted in our psyches as a restful color, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue brings a sense of peace and tranquility to the human spirit, offering refuge. Aiding concentration and bringing laser like clarity, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue re-centers our thoughts. A reflective blue tone, Classic Blue fosters resilience.")

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

That is a great shade of blue. I was just contemplating a plate from Villeroy & Boch in that shade. (I didn’t get it, but only because I’m not fancy enough yet. And also because they didn’t seem to have a complete set I’d be happy with.)

Wearing Incense Rosé today to approach this foggy day with some inner clarity.

I come bearing questions from a friend! She has been wearing Marc Jacobs Dot for years, and now needs a new bottle but is having trouble finding it. She would like to know:
    – Has it been discontinued? If so, how long ago?
    – If it has been discontinued, are there online retailers you trust to have the unspoiled, real stuff? Which ones?

Thanks for your help, friends! I haven’t sniffed it myself, but that bottle looks gorgeous.

Dot has been discontinued and it’s not available from any of my favorite discounters online. There’s some sealed bottles available on eBay from a couple sellers with 100% positive feedback if she wants to try it.
Hope you find the clarity you seek, Koyel, hugs to you ?

I agree , I love this blue and it reminds me of the water, the color of boat biminis and sail covers and marinas where the sun warms your bones and your soul.

Only two releases I would consider full bottles of for best of 2019: Eve and Pandora…. but I am not wearing either.

Very early this morning tested four that I think we’re released in 2019-

    I?YY
    Insensee Tiare
    Slowdive
    Santal Complet

They were all pleasant but not heart stopping for me which is just as well.

Post shower applied Winter Woods which is all about the most gorgeous thick ambery vanilla on my skin…no smoke and no woods.

I think it’s wonderful that Slowdive makes your ❤️ pitter patter!! I think there are many Nesters who would say the same ?
I think it’s me feeling much less enthusiastic and quite overwhelmed by the thousands of new releases each year. When I started wearing fragrance in the 70s new releases per year were probably less than 100, maybe even less than 50. And while I do really enjoy sampling those fragrances that everyone raves about I am also secretly relieved to NOT want any of them because it gives me more opportunity to wear my own collection of those that I truly adore.

Any kind of fun money has been spent. Spent on dog food, cell phone bill and the remaining little bit on STC decants. I haven’t heard anything yet about Une Rose Vermeille. Even though I have a backup bottle, I hope it’s not discontinued. Wearing Les Annees 25 BIS today and wishing for a bottle. Maybe when I get my tax return, I will get a bottle.

Called out sick today- still feeling a bit crappy but my stomach is better, so that’s good.
My only perfume I can think of from 2019 is a sample of Zoologist Chameleon, which I can smell in spite of my congestion. I do really like Chameleon, but it’s similar to Goldfield and Banks Southern Bloom, which I like better. I’ll probably be buying neither, lol.

Memoire D Une Odeur, which reminds me a lot of CdG Odeur 53 with this funny hairspray note.
We are back from France, had some tarte flambee at the restaurant in the supermarket, which was quite good. We finally visited the outlet city in Roppenheim and bought a new wooden laundry sorter.
We also bought lots of cheese, salt butter and some oysters for dinner.

I’m spending the day in Bengale Rouge, definitely in my top 5 of 2019. It’s so warm and cozy that it makes me feel like I should be sitting in front of a fire going in a fireplace just reading the day away and drinking something hot.

Other 2019 faves: St. Clair Eve and Pandora, Hendley Bloodline, DSH December 2019 for Scent Trunk, and Perris Monte Carlo Jasmin de Pays. But I think I only tried 15 releases of 2019, so who knows what good stuff is still out there.

One thing that makes working the days after Christmas not so bad is the lack of traffic. I got home in 16 minutes last night! It usually takes me 30-40 min.

I haven’t sampled much from 2019 but am looking forward to sniffing Coromandel Parfum, Mon Guerlain Intense and Metallique at some point. I have poured over the editor favorites and readers’ choice awards for 2019 on Fragrantica…always fun.

I stumbled upon Solstice Scents in August of this year and have tried most of the vanillas and gourmands (of which there are many) in this wonderful line. My favorites are: Black Mallow, Blackburn’s Parlor, Estate Lavender, Estate Vanilla, Foxcroft Fairgrounds, Gibbon’s Mischief Night, Halloween Night, Nightgown, Rose Mallow Cream and Snowmint Mallow. These are mostly all gourmands but the entire line is well done and worthy of exploration.

This has been the first holidays without both my parents and it has been tough but I have so many things to be grateful for including this wonderfully fragrant and kind community. Thank you for all your posts and warm hearts.

I am sampling Bee this morning, I think the only 2019 release that I have. I sampled a bunch of new stuff over the summer but didn’t buy any. Bee has an interesting salty note to me, almost mouth-watering, but the honey in Slowdive is better. I don’t know if I need both. The drydown may help me make a decision.

Depends on how many honey perfumes you need in your collection. I liked Honey too, but will be sticking with Slowdive, at least until the travel spray runs out.

I’ve probably tried about a dozen or so new scents from 2019 but only have a couple on hand, and I went with Zoologist Chameleon. I bought a travel spray of it and like it very much. It’s not like anything else I have. We have cloudy and somewhat cooler weather here and I feel quite lazy. I’m allowed, right?

P.S. I really like that color blue, also. It’s nice they have a real color and not something pale and innocuous. In watching HGTV do-over home decorating shows I’ve been struck by the extent to which their choices are always for gray or white (or both). So safe, but also to my taste, blah. Give me color any day!

I’m bending the cp rules big time, but whatever. My vote goes to Andy’s Wowilla body oil based on sheer enjoyment of the product and how much of it I’ve used in 2019. My bottle is well over half gone, and I’m pretty certain I’ll drain it by the time winter is over.

Rules bent cuz Wowilla came out in late December of last year. ?

Honorable mentions: AT Les Annees 25 Bis, Hiram Green Lustre and of course, Bengale Rouge. ❤️

Joining plenty of others in Bengale Rouge today. Only 2019 release I have, so it’s my favorite by default.

Also in honor of the new kitty, who has been exploring more. She’s more concerned about the humans than she is the other cat. They are completely stereotypical in feline indifference to each other. (It’s not at all my experience that cats are indifferent to humans…all of ours have been quite affectionate.)

    SOTD = Parfum Satori Satori

There were a good number of 2019 releases (or those I’ve tried for the first time in 2019) I enjoyed well enough to go for either a travel spray, a partial bottle or a FB (too many to list right now, maybe later). I decided to pick the most recent full bottle I purchased – Parfum Satori Satori, at 15% off from LuckyScent (the APJ code … somehow the 20% code was elusive but 15% is better than nothing). Anyway, I tried this a year or two ago and was stalking for a discount and it was definitely worth the wait!

In other news, my router died. I went to 3 stores today and the cheapest router that would work with my DSL is $400! One salesperson said DSL does not exist anymore and I just have him a LOOK. Anyway, I eventually found the modem / router combo Verizon sent for my mom’s Assisted Living apartment and I am about to call to have them walk me through installation. Wish me luck.

I will post again when I’m in Mexico City as I am leaving first thing tomorrow!

W00t. It worked. Verizon also walked me through how to change the name. The devices I had used at the Assisted Living apartment connected using the WiFi name I had set up for her. All told, the wait took 50 minutes, the actual help 10 minutes. No complaints since it got done!

In Ubar for this cool National Fruitcake Day!

Thank goodness for teenagers! My husband got me earbuds for Christmas that are supposed to work via bluetooth with my mobile, but my ancient phone was having none of it. So, the earbud gift morphed into a new phone gift. And for all this fancy phone, all I wanted was for the earbuds to work and to customize my ringtone. After much blood, sweat, and tears, and considerable help from my son, I now hear the first dulcet verse from Dean Martin’s Volare whenever someone calls! :-) :-) :-)

I’ve pulled out a sample of The Different Company Majaina Sin for today but I can’t say I would claim it as a top release of 2019, even though it’s perfectly nice.

I feel like I completely missed 2019 in terms of perfume releases— almost everything I remember trying for the first time recently and loving is from 2018 at the latest? Oh well, I’m sure nothing I missed would have changed my life forever.

Scent at bedtime last night: Demeter Christmas Tree. That’s one I find very soothing. I had planned to wear it earlier in the week, but a lot of the week I was commando perfume-wise. I drifted off on a cloud of evergreen and other notes that were quite pleasant to me.

I tried quite a range of new-to-me perfumes in the past year, but I believe many were samples of indie perfumes that had been introduced ten or twenty years ago. And I tried some mainstream classics. I really need to concentrate on loving some of the more inexpensive perfumes and colognes around. :)

Oh, I remember a recent introduction — well, technically new. I got the solid perfume of LUSH Rose Jam, which has been around for quite some time, but not in perfume form.

Ah, okay. Thanks for the info. :) So it’s a thing that Lush products come and go, and some fragrances may be available in a body spray one year, or shower gel or perfume some other year?

I looked at FragranceX, and they give some of the notes of Christmas Tree as orange, ginger, mint and fir. Actually, that explains a lot about why I like it. :) I think the Frasier Fir was the other evergreen I liked a lot, but that was a more purely evergreen scent.

Oh, I know what I tried that came out relatively recently. I got a 1/2 ml sample of a fragrance that was introduced in late 2018 — Lost Cherry. I like the scent. I’m not a fan of the name. I think a lot of NST folks agreed about not being a fan of the name. This also went in my too-expensive-to-buy-a-bottle category in an earlier project. (lol)

It’s okay, though. A number of us discovered those 4711 fruit & spice colognes due to Pixel’s splits. :) I love the grapefruit and pink pepper one, and really like several of the others. For $20 to $30 for a 5.7 oz bottle, it’s way on the other end of that price scale. And I’ve posted numerous times about having so much fun trying Demeter samples, where full bottles are around $20 or so for 4 oz at the discounter websites.

I tried and swapped the Atelier Cologne Pacific Lime travel spray. I rather liked it, but of course the parental units weren’t fans. :p Oh, well. I tried many, many samples of new-to-me perfumes and colognes, and got a few bottles and some travel sprays. This past quarter’s spending outbreaks will be confessed to Donatella very soon.

For the Best of 2019 cp, I decided to be brave (for me) and layer two scents (which I never, ever do): YR Cuir de Nuit and MB Bizarre Brandy (thank you, hajusuuri!). The leather, dry cocoa, and vanilla of the Cuir forms a nice base while the maple and brandy in the Brandy adds a bit of boozy sweetness to the mix. Coffee in the mid notes of both scents (a rare find and a note I love in fragrance) as well as some woody and spicy notes add additional warmth to this festive combo. I am liking it! But then I love gourmand scents at this time of the year.

Finally enjoying some relaxing time, I’m looking forward to a couple of low-key visits with friends this weekend and celebrating New Year’s Eve at our favorite folk music pub. Adding to the enjoyment has been the incredible weather those of us in the Chicago area have been enjoying lately. Yesterday it was 61 degrees and, although it’s cooler today, temps are back up tomorrow. I know winter will return but in the meantime, we are blessed!

Wishing blessings this weekend for all NST’ers, especially those who are a bit ‘under the weather!’

Ooh that YR cuir de nuit sounds like it’s worth a sniff! I love coffee but haven’t found a perfume with it as a note that I love yet!

Not a 2019 release but doing ELdO “Vierges et Toreros” as it was freezing rain today and I needed something to get my blood going. It’s the only tuberose perfume I’ve found that wears well on me, probably because the tuberose is busy dueling with huge hits of leather, nutmeg, etc.

I wasn’t cp compliant today as I was in Reglisse Noire again today. I may wear a drop of Pandora to bed (thank you hajusuuri)! I almost got a travel size of Pandora when I was away, but never pulled the trigger due to time constraints.

Got home about 1/2 an hour after Purolator had attempted to deliver our new suitcases; now we have to go pick them up tomorrow. Hubby found some hardsided ones online for a decent price; the old suitcases had their last trip!

Very glad to be home after the Christmas craziness.

Absolutely is a Lush thing. If you find something you like, do get it. They will bring back things from time to time but are notorious for discontinuing things.

I just discovered that they have brought back their Ginger perfume; it’s been gone for about 5 years, maybe more. Next time I’m in the store, I will investigate to see if it’s been changed.

I wore 4160 Tuesdays’ Meet Me On The Corner layered with Christmas Concert. Such a great combination!
