Friday scent of the day 10/18

Posted by Robin on 18 October 2019 233 Comments

It's Chocolate Cupcake Day, and it's Friday — not a bad combination. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance by Maria Candida Gentile, Maître Parfumeur et Gantier, Memo Paris or Miller et Bertaux if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter M.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in Maria Candida Gentile Elephant & Roses.

Reminder: on 10/25, for International Artist's Day, match a fragrance with an artist or work of art, and tell us about it!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Ciao amici

    Mendittorosa
    Le Mat

Fragrance Notes: Nutmeg, Black Pepper, Cloves, Egyptian Geranium, Rose from Grasse, Indonesian Patchouli, Cashmere Wood, Everlasting Flower (Immortelle)

Has anyone else tried this? I got a decant from a split and its gorgeous…stunning. Ritual from this line I also love.

Hmmmm..do the little ones and I need to find a chocolate cupcake today?

PS Robin, I love your photo today.
I will show the kids this one later. My older crazy monkey carried around a framed photo of Ganesha for months, until one day it broke 🙁

Do your kids watch tv? We watched a great series on PBS and my daugher and I were in love with Safina the baby elephant. Elephants are such fascinating creatures.https://www.pbs.org/video/baby-safina-takes-tumble-xi3jnf/

Its not a feminine girly fragrance, I would say unisex pushing the meter bar towards masculine.
        On my skin its stunning

For anyone who loves elephants, the story of Shirley and Jenny, two former circus elephants who were reunited at a sanctuary later in life is a real heart warming story. Video link below.

Its unisex just so you know
Its more of a masculine rose than a sweet feminine rose..so if you like only feminine scents this one I would pass on.
Somewhere I read that Luca Turin liked it, but I never read any of his reviews so I am not sure if our tastes even match.

I really enjoy Le Mat – it’s a dark and thoughtful. Makes me go, “Hmmmmm…” I love the strangeness of it. It’s the opposite of a jammy rose.

Happy Friday NST! Long time no see!
I couldn’t find Elephant & Roses this morning, so after a futile search that made a little late for work (whoops) I’m wearing MFK Cologne Pour Le Soir.

I’m wearing Miller & Bertaux Shanti Shanti. I first tested this probably in like 2008 or 9? At the time I remember finding the patchouli overwhelming, like I think I actually apologized to someone who came into my office because I thought it smelled so strongly hippieish. Now, a strong patch-rose sounds wonderful to me, but I’m not smelling it much at all; I wonder if the formula has changed or if I’ve just become more patch-tolerant over the years. Anyway it’s a good perfume.

I’m house twins with lucasai (and probably lots more of you) in Memo Italian Leather, my favorite from the discovery set. Thought about African Leather (I think that was Foxbins’ favorite), but in the end the tomato leaf note in IL spoke my name emphatically and I had to answer. Happy Friday everyone!

No small M’s for me, so I am in Mugler Over the Musk. Thunked my little sample and I think I will be needing more.
This cooler weather has me craving soups, stews and chili’s. I have the most delicious recipe for Irish Beef Stew that I have been making for almost 20 years and so I think that will be tonight’s dinner with some warm dinner rolls on the side.

Once upon a time I subscribed to Bon Appetit and tried new recipes on a regular basis. This is one that has stuck with through the years:
        https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/irish-beef-stew-104817
I usually up the beef to 2# because otherwise it is heavy on the vegetables imo. I have occasionally substituted a cup or can of Guinness beer for some of the broth also. It’s the best recipe for beef stew I have ever tried.?

Yeah, I usually do stews in the crockpot too and this one is a bit more work initially with browning the meat and sautéing the vegetables first, but it gives it such a rich flavor. Let me know if you try it!

A long time ago, my kids had this wonderful children’s book, Cosmo’s Moon. The moon keeps following the boy Cosmo everywhere he goes, disrupting the tides, making dogs bark… Finally they have a chat, and the moon realizes that by never saying good bye, he never gets to say hello. That’s how I think of the perfumes I put away!

Hi Elisa P, I think awhile back someone mentioned sunscreen you suggested IT cosmetics powder…Have you ever tried their tinted face cream?
I follow Lisa Eldridge and she recently did Victoria Beckham’s makeup (mostly with her VB makeup line that she just launched) but on V’s face she use IT CC cream. I have been faithful to Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer but I am willing to try others as long as it doesn’t irritate my skin. I am a bit sensitive.

I do have the CC cream but it’s more opaque than a tinted moisturizer. I don’t use it much anymore as I prefer the powder since my skin can be oily.

Good morning and Happy FriYAY once again!

This morning I had a decision to make: Get up outta bed and find my fragrance of the day, or lay there a couple more minutes under the warm cozy blankets. You guessed it…..SCENTLESS today! 🙂

My jacket does have the remnants of some perfume that I can’t put my finger (nose?) on though, so there’s that going for me……

Have a great weekend y’all….Planning to find somewhere local to do a quick fall hike with my middle kid. Thinking Sawnee Mountain…..

Wearing Memo Paris’ Tiger’s Nest, and I suspect I won’t be alone, with how much love it gets on here. Well deserved, it’s one of those scents that makes me less productive, with all the breaks I take to stop and sniff my wrists. So glad they make 10ml sizes, I’ll have to pick one up after this sample is drained.

This is mostly CdG of course, but do I get 1/4 point for Monocle? 😉

Next week Ill be starting at my new job. But I already had an ‘introductory’ meeting with my team lead this morning.
So much information. Haha. But really looking forward to this job and meeting new people.

In scent related news: I bought the TF Tuscan Leather travel spray for my husband (birthday present).

Robin, I guessed your scent just looking at that picture. 🙂

SOTD is Memo Winter Palace. Dry spicy orange with light resins and balsamic notes. It smells quite Christmassy to me.

Thank you for all your kind comments on Wednesday. Yes, staying in bed all the time is frustrating and boring. But at least almost one week passed.

I am easy!! Remind me how much longer you are in bed??

Because I *cannot* stay in bed all day, of course it sounds sort of appealing, so long as I had my ipad and laptop and books and someone to fetch me tea all day. But probably I would enjoy that for about a day, right?

You are not easy. You are good at matching a picture to a scent.

At least three weeks. Maybe four. My mum is amazing at taking care of me, but it still very hard for me. Getting used to the fact that you no longer can do the most basic things on your own (drawing a curtain, taking a shower, pouring a glass of water etc.). It gets a bit better after the first two or three days though.

Not participating in the community project today. I am not seeing anything that begins with the letter M in my collection. I took a paid personal day today and taking another one on the 30th. I refuse to lose them because I work too hard to do that. Spending the morning in Kiehl’s original Musk right now, while finishing up this week’s pesky bills. I will switch over to Ubar after my shower.

I wasn’t sure I could participate in the CP today, as I have no full bottles of anything that starts with M except Mitsouko and it’s going to be 88 and sunny [again!] today, and I just can’t. I have a bottle of a perfume I created myself at a workshop that I named “M” for my first name, but it’s not suitable for today either. So I dug through my old samples and found Maison Francis Kurdjia’s Amyris pour Femme. It doesn’t offend me, but I can see why the dabber was never drained!

Hi everyone and happy Friday. I’ve been going without scent all week. I was at UCSF last weekend and came home to see my cat Gino was gravely ill.
The Vet determined he suffered a stroke so we made the decision to euthanize him. It was difficult but I hate to see animals suffer and have poor quality of life and he was obviously in distress.

No scent seems to give me comfort so I’ve been wearing Nuxe body oil and the matching EDT spray and Moroccan hair Oil.

SmokeyToes is the cat in my avatar. We’ve had him since he was a kitten (we adopted him in 2008).
If you are on any of the FB perfume groups, Gino is my FB avatar. Both cats are Maine Coons, over 20 lbs and black-coated. Between them and my kinky curly hair, there are a lot of hair ball/tumbleweeds rolling around the house!

SOTD = Memo Paris Eau de Memo

… and I had a chocolate cupcake today! Double points?

I have a set of 3 travel sprays of this perfume which I first wore during a hot and humid day in the summer and it was perfect. Today is windy and cool and it is perfect. Methinks this is versatile enough for all seasons! It’s a seamless blend of lemon, tea and leather?

So yesterday I ordered a bunch of stuff from the Fall launch over at Solstice Scents: several jars of creamy whipped soap and some EDP samples. I already got an acknowledgment today that the order is in process, in addition to the email yesterday regarding order receipt.

Switching gears, for those who had ordered from the newly opened Sonoma Scent Studio, have you received your order? How soon after you placed your order did you receive your items? I placed my order on October 9th and I haven’t heard a peep since then. I sent an email this morning and have not heard back. I know it’s California but most indie brand proprietors respond pretty quickly! Please share your experience. Thanks!

If I get out of here early enough, I will go over to Arabian Oud Times Square to sniff around!

Based on the SSS updates in Facebook, these are preorders. She said orders will ship in the first two weeks of November. It sounds like that should be added to the website for those that aren’t on FB. I didn’t receive a confirmation email with my order, but I emailed her to make sure it went through and she responded the same day that it did. I know I don’t get order confirmation emails from DSH either. I wish all companies would send them.

Thanks. Agree on the pre-order comment. On my email, I mentioned that if she is using Facebook to communicate, I will not get the communication so she needs to explains her outreach beyond Facebook. I would hate for this to be my first AND only order if the situation does not change.

I should have added that I placed an order before her site had officially launched. I happened upon it in the morning because I was searching for notes of Forest Walk and couldn’t help but notice the new site was up and perfumes were for sale. Naturally, I assumed it was ready to take orders, but when I went in Facebook, she didn’t have the announcement that the site was up until an hour or two after I ordered. It sounds like she has confirmation emails turned on now. My experience has been positive with her so far.

I’m good because I have a rolling home that I can move to safety. All along the river is still flooded, more rain forecast for the beginning of the week. I had a couple patients this weeks whose homes/apartments were flooded. Had a beet farmer yesterday who said they are teetering right on the edge of ruin with the beet harvest this year. Beet sugar is a HUGE industry in this area, so it could be catastrophe for local farmers. In light of their struggles, I consider myself lucky to be able to up and move anywhere. And let me tell you, the farmers here are the most stoic, uncomplaining people I’ve ever cared for. Which can sometimes be challenging if they minimize chest pain..!

Yep, people like that will make light of almost any physical discomfort. Up to the health professional to make sure they get the care they need.

Farmers are struggling everywhere I think, some more than others. Difficult to witness. I’m sure they are glad to have you there.

I’m contracted on the cardiology unit (PCU). That being said, contract nurses are the first to “float” off the unit to other areas of the hospital that may be short staffed. You can be floated in the middle of your shift to another unit, which happened to me yesterday. So, if you’re not comfortable with change, travel nursing is not a good fit. ?

Ohh, I do love Indochine, it’s such an underrated beauty.

I hear you regarding farmers and their stoic mannerisms. I grew up in farm country on Eastern Long Island, which formerly had a large German, English, and Polish community. They are tough nuts to crack!

Smelling just wonderful in Memo Tiger’s Nest. I love this even more on my second wearing. It has so many stages of development. First, it’s aldehyde incense amber and it gradually burns off the aldehydes and settles into rosy, musky, amber incense. It’s hitting the spot today.

Yesterday I happily wore MCG Gershwin for a long day at work. It was my last day of providing training and all day support for a system and process change. This was the smoothest day of the whole project so that’s a relief. I went out for lunch with two coworkers who I consider friends, and we enjoyed a delicious Indian buffet. I think it’s one of the best buffets I’ve had so will definitely eat there again.

No points for me since I’m in Philosykos, but I couldn’t resist since the weather seemed perfect for it. I’ve been busy the past two weeks getting quotes for siding on my house, the process is surprisingly irritating but I think I found the company and product I’m going with, finally. It’s amazing how difficult it is to find images of houses with various colors of siding!

Looking forward to tomorrow, when I’ll be sinking a couple hundred spring bulbs throughout my garden.

Oh wow, that’s so cool about all of your spring bulbs! When Imused to live in Massachusetts, I would splurge on lots of exotic tulip bulbs and had a pretty display every spring. You see a few yards here with tulips but they just don’t do well and you have to dig up the bulbs and keep them in the fridge a long time… too much trouble. But since we’re finally having some cooler weather, my neighbor and I went out to buy pretty chrysanthemums and we will now pretend it’s fall!

No chocolate cupcakes for me, but I’m making a 9″ chocolate cake for a potluck tomorrow. For the CP, I am wearing Memo Tamarindo. It has been so rainy and cold here I needed a nice tropical vibe. Also I am hoping it will drive “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” out of my head. Cold, rain, and high surf planted it in my head on Wednesday.

Don’t own any of the CP brands. Can you guys help me out? Fabulous and Santal Blush arrived and I am not sure if they are real. I didn’t open the Fabulous, but I tried Santal Blush and I couldn’t really smell anything. Is SB that light? It came in brown packaging.
Is there a way to tell how a Tom Ford is fake? I bought these on Ebay from two different sellers. I don’t want to assume that I was getting a raw deal, I have been very happy with Ebay.

I think the SB is fake. I’m going to order a sample to put my mind at ease, either way. The packaging is a mess. After 5 sprays, I can smell it and it smells good, regardless of what it is.

Would love to support any NSTers if they sold on Ebay.

Santal Blush is one of the lighter Tom Fords and I had the same experience testing it. That said, like cazaubon mentioned, they do get faked since they’re popular.

Full CP participation in Memo Paris French Leather. From a set of samples I set aside. It’s light and pleasant enough. I don’t really need any more leathers.

Our little jaunt outside the city was wonderful. Overcast and blustery, but the heavy rain held off till late afternoon. The rain was the perfect excuse for a nice nap in the B&B before dinner. Yesterday was very windy…such that the power went off in the town. Thankfully, it happened after we had lunch and were headed to a long walk through the woods. Beautiful sunset along the river for the train ride home. We need to do this more often.

Acquired a few small scented candles from the local apothecary. Lavender and white tea, fig and amber, and smoked chai. I’m ready for fall….

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood in the Chicago area, with bright sunshine, temps moving into the 60’s, and leaves finally beginning to say ‘autumn’ – isn’t that a beautiful word?

The closest I can come to playing today is with a Molinard scent from the Autour de la Vanille Coffret Decouverte, a beloved purchase from my only trip to France and a tour of Molinard. Vanille Patchouli is my favorite of the five – its patchouli, a favorite note of mine, is appropriately earthy but smooth, and there’s a sweet, carmelly note that satisfies my love of gourmand scents in cooler weather.

Wishing everyone a great weekend ahead!

Mary Greenwell Plum for me today, I will smell very nice as I do the supermarket shopping.
I will also be shopping for a new sewing machine. I bought my trusty Elna back in 1985, I had just finished university and had no money, so buying an expensive sewing machine seemed extravagant, but it was the best thing I ever bought. It’s finally worn out and parts aren’t available. I’m sure that sewing machines have advanced a long way since 1985, so this will be a day of discovery!

      This delighted me Gaynor!
My mom learned to sew her own clothes during the depression. She had a Singer and then another Singer until she lost her sight. My dad made her a beautiful sewing room where she made everything. Once she turned the drapes from the living room into a flowered pantsuit and we called her Scarlett O’Hara for years!
      Enjoy your shopping!

Since this is M Friday I’ll take the opportunity to announce I’m planning a split of some Memo Lalibela for splitmeet. It’s out of stock at some sites. I was thinking of getting the three travel sprays at Neiman Marcus, so I don’t have to decant, but they won’t have them back in stock until Nov. 7th. I don’t hear much about it on here, but that’s the one that knocked my socks off when Nancy and I tried them recently on our Galleria sniffing expedition. I HAVE to have it! The travel bottles don’t have sprayers, but are still attractively priced ($40 for 10 ml).

My aunt passed. She was gentle, sweet, kind, intelligent, and beautiful.
She’s had several health challenges over the years but was only 71. My Uncle is so distraught that I don’t know if he can recover. Their marriage was a romance. They were soulmates and he is inconsolable. It was a hard day. Wish I could help him.

Today was an absolutely gorgeous, but chilly fall day. ?? Appreciating it while it lasts… the cold rain will return. ☔ On a happier note, I found out that one of my friends had her baby yesterday afternoon! It’s a girl!

SOTD = Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier Ambre Precieux Les Parfums du Levant EdT, from the sample stash. Wow, that’s a mouthful to say and to type. It lasts like an EdP or extrait on me. It and Pacifica Spanish Amber would be my recommended sniffs for “reference ambers”.

I think this is the latest I’ve ever posted, or earliest! Thanks to the swapmeet, I was able to participate in Memo French leather. My first time trying Memo. I liked it. I didn’t look up the notes, but I got a lot of citrus in the beginning, drying down to soft leather. I got home a half hour ago from work and have to go back in, in the morning. Goodnight All.

Partial credit in Miller Harris Fleur Oriental. I’m enjoying it more than I did the first two times I tried it, as I’m getting more carnation and less baby powder. Another try, then, before the decant goes into the swap bag.

I’m curious to retry Fleur Oriental. I tried it very early on in my serious perfume sampling days when I first learned of niche perfume. I dismissed it as harsh baby powder, not soft and soothing in the least. But my tastes have changed a lot and my nose has smelled a lot more. Maybe one day I’ll smell it again.
