Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, mid-October 2019

Posted by Robin on 12 October 2019 250 Comments

PSA: the next splitmeet will be held on Saturday the 26th.

Meanwhile, our same old open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance you're reaching for the most lately, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Hello and happy weekend! No perfume yet for me. Tea this morning was Numi’s Breakfast Blend. Tea this afternoon will most likely be decaf English Teatime.

Hi! I’ve kind of given up trying to wear perfume in the morning, but I don’t get objections to tea. lol

I can usually put perfume on at bedtime, when I’m in my room and not bothering anyone else. By then, the commenters from Europe are likely long asleep, and probably a fair number of folks who live on the East Coast of the U.S. I’d assume the folks in California would mostly be awake at what’s 8:00 p.m. for them.

Scent of the evening: Carthusia Fiori di Capri EdP. I had had a sample I could dab. This was my first spray from a bottle. It’s stronger than many of the fragrances I’ve been wearing lately, but more often than not lately I’ve been wearing light colognes or Demeter fragrances. It’s not overwhelming, though. I think I’m getting some carnation scent from it, and other perfume florals. I’m finding it quite pleasant so far.

    My goodness where is everyone?
It’s pack the fragrance collection day.
If you called dibs during the freebie meet, that means your packages will go out early next week.
Finishing coffee ☕️ my robe smells faintly of a combination of everything I have worn this week, in a good way.
Fires are still burning, winds are moving south towards San Diego.
    That picture is lovely, Robin.

Hello and hope everyone is doing well.
After a dreadful week we have a beautiful golden autumn weather for the weekend. 20*C is pretty unusual for mid October here.

I pulled the trigger and decided to buy Guerlain LUI today, it should arrive in a couple of days.

As of SotD, today I’m in Atelier des Ors Rose Omeyyade.
I portrayed it like this: https://www.instagram.com/p/B3haOgwh4nY/

Good morning, all. I’m wearing some of my ever-dwindling decant of Botrytis, which is a perfect fall scent. If I could find it being sold anywhere, I’d buy a bottle in a flash, and maybe a backup. Unfortunately, the folks at Luckyscent tell me that it’s not available, it’s undergoing new packaging, they’ll let me know, etc.

If this morning is any indication, I’m not going to get much work done today, despite the two moka pots of espresso I’ve had already. But I smell fabulous.

The weather is mild here for a few days. I stocked up on teas and my sotd was Mon Parfum Chéri par Camille which I think I only wear in autumn. Something about it’s retro vibe and the overdose of patchouli seems made for this time of year.

I think it is probably quite a divisive scent. You love it, or you don’t, at all.
I guess that is why there were so many bottles available on eBay shortly after its release. Lots of people must have bought it blind, only to then realise that they didn’t like it at all.
But apparently I love damp cellars with violets ;)

What an unfortunate situation w/PG&A shutting down sections of the city.
And Who in their right mind starts a trash fire in LA this time of year?? Sometimes the unconsciousness of our fellow man is unconscionable.
Glad to hear you survived. I keep watching the fire – wishing you all luck. I have heard the smoke is already pretty bad in LA: West Hollywood, Glendale and Burbank.

A number of these companies list ingredients, which include ample “safe” synthetics. A few of the ones I’ve looked at state that they are not going for “natural,” just safe–hypoallergenic, etc. People who comment on those ads don’t seem to realize the synthetic content. Michelle Pfeifer (Henry Rose perfumes) makes a statement about her learning curve, that natural doesn’t necessarily mean safe, and her decision to use tested synthetics in her products. I find the whole thing very interesting.

Wearing Le Labo Baie 19, a very believable and lovable petrichor soliflore. I think I will be wearing this quite regularly. Lately have been wearing Elevator Music a lot, it’s a safe wear to work scent, salty, gently sweet, soft and powdery musk.

I like Baie 19 for the realism, plus it’s got nice longevity. Elevator Music is a nice background scent, unobtrusive, though that could be a drawback for some.

It was windy here the past couple of days and all the yellow-leafed trees are bare now, but the maple in my yard is still mostly green and has all its leaves. Looks like I’ll be raking late this year. My cleaning person has apparently bailed on us, so today I have to vacuum and do the kitchen. Ugh. I’m wearing Parfums de Marly Oajan, a lovely fall/winter fragrance, and thanking the powers that be that I don’t live in California any more. Blackouts, really??

In Blue Musk by Satori. This was in a little liquid-filled pouch (like a towelette without a towel in it), and it’s not bad. Will research the brand a little bit in a moment. Technically, I need to be scent-free tonight because we have a concert, so hopefully this is not a tenacious scent! A little bummed because the piece we are singing tonight (“Mass in Blue”) is hard and high and my vocal chords are feeling very creaky and scratchy, might have been the result of having 12 12-year-olds rocking out to 80s music here last night!

Sad update to my kitty’s situation: she is now staying overnight at the emergency vet, with an IV drip. Our regular vet did some blood work, and her kidney values were all messed up. It was recommended that Pixel kitty go to the emergency vet. I hope that one night there will do the trick. They are incredibly expensive.

SOTD = commando. Perfume doesn’t feel right for me at this time.

    Gorgeous picture, Robin!

I’m in Nicolaï Neroli Intense from the freebiemeet – thanks to OaklandFresca! It’s a very wearable BWF without the punch in the nose, helped by patchouli and beeswax. It smells like a more complex vintage fragrance but with deceptively simple notes. It reminds me of Le Temps d’une Fete which I’ve recently smelled from a partial bottle which joined my collection.

Neroli Intense survived the smell of microwave heated sesame chicken and vegetable lo-mein; many other fragrances are no match or would have cowered in fear ?

Freebiemeet recipients: I will start decanting this weekend and will send out the packages in the next 2 weeks (except for 2 due to other arrangements).

I went with Myrrh Eglantine today – it’s so long lasting compared to the other Hermessence. 12 hours and still getting a whiff.

I applied for a small grant to buy scents and order perfume materials for one of my classes. I have been having fun shopping for things I think will peak student’s olfactory interest. Since I was looking for scents with specific links to religious traditions I bought a decant set of CdG incense series. Suggestions welcome!

I finished my STC decant of Cloon Keen Atelier Castana. It really grew on me, and now I think I want a bottle but it seems quite hard to find in the US now. I’ve only seen one boutique online that stocks it. I find it similar to Dries van Noten but more wearable.

I went to bed early last night and was solidly out for 6 hours before the early morning tossing and turning started. I will probably try to sleep a lot tonight too to make up for a few too many extra early mornings last week. I’ve had a nice day so far. I found a skirt I really like at Goodwill and went for a lunch of fried chicken sandwiches and blood orange ginger beer.

A few reviews of some products currently in my shower:
Klorane Nourishing Shampoo with Ylang Ylang – A must try if you really like ylang ylang and your hair isn’t very dry. I don’t think it’s the most moisturizing, but it smells amazing and gets my hair clean.
L’Oreal Elvive Extraordinary Oil Nourishing Shampoo – Use this if you want your hair to smell like wood pudding, specifically Organza Indecence. It has a lot of oil in it as the name suggests and feels luxurious for the price. Good for drier hair.
Desert Essence Sweet Almond Body Wash – I was so excited to use this because it smells very strong in the package, however, once you suds up with it the scent basically disappears. That’s very disappointing, but it does feel very soft and moisturizing. I will have to wait for sweet almond shower goodness for when I use the big Crabtree & Evelyn Sweet Almond Oil Shower Gel I bought before they discontinued it.

Happy to be home right now. Coworker left me way too much for me to do at work today and couldn’t finish it all. My department manager pulled me aside and said to quit wearing perfume at work. One of my coworkers in my department had said that whatever I wear makes her eyes water. I have been wearing perfume at work for years and nobody has said anything until today. With that fact, I get that people can be sensitive to perfume but why say something now, after a decade of starting to wear perfume today. I wore La Maisons de Vanille Fleurie death Tahiti. I think that I might dab on Jicky on the back of my knees when I am at work, very lightly.

It is someone who has been there longer than me. The manager said that it gets on the phone handle too and I don’t know how it does but somehow it’s a “safety issue”. Perfume is the new smoking.

          Phone handle ?

Is there a new cleaning person, new company, new products? Some cleaning people wipe down the phone as part of their routine…which is why EVERY morning, I wipe down my phone, desk, mouse and keyboard because the same dirty rag is used to go from desk to desk and that is no bueno, especially if someone is sick, which almost always seems to be the case.

I think it’s time to switch it up! Try something new and unexpected. If anyone asks again, blame it on your new shampoo or body wash. They can’t knock you for having good hygiene! ?

You could wear something really skanky, and if asked say you were so upset by not wearing perfume, you haven’t showered in 3 days ?
Or maybe just wear it when not working with that person.

Not sure that this would meet requirements but I often spray one or two sprays on a handkerchief (this makes me sound super old school but I ONLY use them for perfume). The scent is so much more powerful than the experience on skin but doesn’t waft as much and is more private. It lasts days and slows down the dry down. There are very very nice handkerchiefs online OR you can embroider on one yourself (I did an iris on my favorite). They are often called pocket squares these days if you search online.

“Perfume is the new smoking.” Yes, it seems so. Many people take some kind of moral high ground when it comes to perfume. I have tried to be more circumspect about where I wear scent. There’s nothing like wearing your best perfume and having someone choke and cough and turn red and gasp for breath, acting like you just threw cow poop on them . . . . Allergies are real for some people. I have a friend who is asthmatic who is triggered by strong scents. Her mother’s condition has become so bad that even strong scents outdoors in nature trigger her asthma. So unfortunate. When I was working, my perfume did seem to trigger a few people when we were in conference rooms, so I knew the handwriting was on the wall.

Yes, allergies and asthma are real. And some people do become allergic to something they weren’t allergic to before, with repeated exposure to it.

But it’s a shame that Dawn has been able to wear perfume at work for many years, and now it’s forbidden. Sorry, Dawn! :(

I’d suggest going easy with the rebellion — maybe seeing for the next little while if your coworkers are okay with the scent of shampoo or a mildly-scented body wash. Trust me, I feel your pain!

It’s tough when a lot of offices are open plan, sometimes with cubicles, sometimes just all open. I know it would bother me to have a lot of noise around that I had no control over. I guess some people don’t want to smell fragrances that they have no control over. (Again, legitimate exceptions for the allergic folks.) And many office buildings use HVAC systems designed in the 1960s and uncomfortable for a large percentage of workers. They often have poor air circulation.

Good luck with the going easy project.

I’m in an open workplace too but have my own sit-stand desk. There are some calls that are piped in to the room because most people in the room have to hear it. It doesn’t bother me but I will need to figure out how to deal with it when I am hosting a call at the same time. I just ordered a stereo headset.

My workplace is scent free, but I wear perfume discreetly. I try to only apply to skin that will be covered up by clothes, and I don’t wear any heavy-hitters to work. Back when my coworker and I shared an office, she let me know on two or three occasions that my perfume was bothering her, so I made a note of which not to wear to work. She is especially sensitive to lilies, tobacco, and pepper notes. Now that we’ve moved to an open office environment, she has not commented on my perfume once.

Today, Saturday (I’m up in the middle of the night), I’m wearing Tom Ford Fougere d’Argent! It’s a delicious, warm fall fragrance that countered the raw Massachusetts weather today while out running errands

Sounds lovely! I have found myself craving a nice fougere. I tried DSH Perfumes Un Soir d’Ete Provencal, and that is lovely. I never get the full experience from sample dabbing, but it didn’t seem to have much lasting power on me. I’ve been considering a full bottle, but part of me thinks I should explore more fougeres first.

Thank you! I was on the fence between Tom Ford’s Fougere Platine and d’Argent and after going back and forth and much sampling and hemming and hawing, I went with a full size bottle of the d’Argent. I’m very pleased with it so far. I accidentally tripped and fell and Tom Ford Lavender Extréme fell into my shopping cart that day too. It was a hard day on the piggy bank!

Ouch, that was a hard fall!

The fougere thing is a bit of a surprise for me. I had cancer treatment 10 years ago, and the chemo turned me into a nauseated lavender hater — this after being a lavender lover. This year I noticed that I’m completely over the lavender problem, in fact I’m craving it. So I’m also curious about the Lavender Extreme!

NST deal experts- I typically ask my DJ for a bottle for Christmas and I have picked out LL Rose 31 which is $$&$$.

Are there any stores that stock LL that have sales or $$ off $$$ before Xmas?

Would YOU trust eBay for LL? I actually love buying partial bottles. Since they can be unscrewed, it’s a bit worrisome. I would not buy from Russia and would check seller feedback, of course. And ask where they bought their bottle.

It rained all day yesterday, while still wet there has been some sunshine today.
I didn’t get time to post on Friday but I was participating in Noa l’Eau which is a staple for me in summer, it has the comforting Noa base + an apple and cassis note, and is surprisingly long lasting on my skin, it positively radiates; don’t miss it if you come across it.

I am now considering dinner, a soup maybe, I have also leeks to prepare, wearing Annick Goutal Sables.

Noa l’Eau, a limited edition originally has been re-issued several times, probably because it’s successful, to my nose the formula has not changed, it is very likeable and easy to wear. I hope you have access to Cacharel in the US.

In my area, Anais Anais is the only one around. When LouLou came out, we had it briefly. Those are the only two I’ve smelled from Cacharel. One of these day’s, I might blind buy Eden. From your description, I think I would like it. Oops! I’m a liar, we also had Noa for a short time, and I smelled it.

Glad the cat is feeling better, and that you got a visit in!

I’m feeling better, too. A couple of regular-strength Advil didn’t do anything much for my headache or other pains, but when I tried a couple of extra-strength Tylenol a few hours later, that finally knocked down the headache, and I was able to move around better, too. Once my OTC allergy medicine kicked in, that cleared up a lot of the congestion. It’s been a bad allergy season.
