Rose & Cuir’s origin story begins in a verdant garden planted more than 70 years ago by Edmond Roudnitska, the perfumer behind such midcentury masterpieces as Diorella and Diorissimo, outside his Côte d’Azur studio. It was there that Roudnitska first smelled the vivid crimson Etoile de Hollande rose that inspired him to create Rose de Rochas for couturier Marcel Rochas in 1949, and there that, in 2018, Roudnitska’s son Michel happened to wave that long-discontinued eau under the discerning nostrils of [Frédéric] Malle and [Jean-Claude] Ellena.

I read a *lot* of old books about roses, and Etoile de Hollande gets a good deal of mention in books that are contemporaneous or published a decade or two after the rose was introduced. I wouldn’t have associated that with Eau d’Hiver. I’ve learned something new. 🙂
And I want to smell Rose de Rochas!
It’s not super clearly worded, but I think they are saying it inspired their NEXT collaboration (Rose & Cuir), not their previous one (Eau d’Hiver)
Ditto. Eau d’Hiver is just mentioned as their last collaboration.
I went to Barney’s here a few weeks ago but they do not have it yet. A JE rose, I am hoping it is marvelous!
I hope so too, I have seen both good and bad reports.
This article is mostly great perfumista bait and a fun read. Though “privileged pulse points” has me cringing.
I ordered a sample yesterday. Given that l love Eau d’ Hiver, and Epice Marine (also a collab with the mentioned French chef / spice guy), and many Ellena and Malle creations, l have high hopes.
Interesting. I also read the article/interview up on Fragrantica. Makes me want to sniff L’eau D’Hiver, which I don’t think I’ve ever tried. Malle is just a very good house. I’ve only owned a travel spray of En Passant, but I admire many of the scents.
It interests me that he says (i think on Fragrantica) that Kelly Calèche was a first crack at Cuir d’Ange. I have both, so I might try one on each wrist. I’ve generally preferred KC but will give Cd’A more of a look. I think I over sprayed it once and was put off….
Always happy to try a rose theme. I used to not like rose, but I certainly do now.
Thanks for that link Robin! I’ve been lucky enough to have tried Rose & Cuir already. As I said before, I found it very interesting and I’m quite keen to see what the general perfumista response will be. It’s very different from his last work with Hermès (and with Malle).
I’ve tried Rose & Cuir twice, as a lover of rose and isobutyl quinoline. I found it disappointing, though I did like it better on the 2nd try than I did on the 1st.
