Friday scent of the day 9/20

Posted by Robin on 20 September 2019 223 Comments

Yep, it's Friday. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance by Laboratorio Olfattivo, Lubin, La Via del Profumo, Les Parfums de Rosine or Liquides Imaginaires, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter L.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

It's my last day at the beach. The weather is perfect. I'm celebrating with a wee drop (I am almost out) of Tawaf from La Via del Profumo.

Reminder: on 9/27 we're going to Flavortown...wear a scent that you associate with one of the five basic tastes (sweet, sour, salty, umami or bitter). Triple bonus points for starting on Monday and doing all 5. Suggested by Regina.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m wearing Un Zeste de Rose by Les Parfums de Rosine, from a freebiemeet sample. It was the only one of the CP houses that I had.

You both smell great…I always liked Zeste, but liked Ecume better. No idea if I still do, they must have been reformulated by now!

I’m a fail for the cp, but I smell good in Vanille Insensee.
Saw the Downton Abbey movie last night. I laughed, I cried and I would recommend it to fans of the show.

        Orangers en Fleurs!
This is the first I smelled from this house
I am going to look up Quelques Fleurs..

I am enjoying it. Its sweet but not as linear as I thought it would be.

That one is a shape shifter on me. I have LOVED it, and not liked it at all… probably tested it 5 or 6 times, and each time I come to a different conclusion.

It reminds me a bit of the SL oranger perfume, fleurs ‘d oranger or something like that

I am enjoying it, when it I first sprayed it the projection was pretty big and now its quiet.

            What was your conclusion(s)?

I will see how it sits when I stick my head back into the King Must Die ( I am also reading The Silence of the Girls, another greek fiction) later on when the kids are sleeping…

          • Oakland Fresca says:
            20 September 2019 at 2:51 pm

No conclusion. 😎 It has a split personality! When I’ve loved it, it has hearkened back to Hanbury and Nerolis of that ilk, more than the SL (I personally find the SL has too much cumin–my skin really amps up cumin). And, like Elisa, when it has not worked, it is because the clean musk stands out too much.

        • Elisa P says:
          20 September 2019 at 2:01 pm

? I have a sample of that one but I can only wear it when it’s cold cuz it’s sweeeet! Like OF, sometimes I really like it and other times I get a huge amount of white musk that grates on me.
I recall Quelques Fleurs (Royale) also having OB but maybe more complex?

Its is sweet..but I feel very elegant today while I am wearing it. Maybe that is just my state of mind
Do you find it similar to Serge’s OdF?

          • Elisa P says:
            20 September 2019 at 3:20 pm

I find it similar to the newer Serge formulation which has almost no cumin to my nose (the old formula was more noticeably cumin-y to me). The SL I think is a hair less sweet, but also has the issue with a dryer sheet musk in the base that is really noticeable to me at times.

Good morning and Happy FriYAY!!! This is my 12th day in a row to work, so I’m pretty stoked to get outta here for a couple of days!

Tonight when I get home I will wear Lubin Black Jade, but it’s a little too full on for my small crowded pharmacy. So for now, I’m wearing Lush I’m Home (in the solid perfume version) and smelling perfectly cozy and yummy and soft and yada yada yada!

    Have a great weekend y’all!

Hi all! I’m at a friend’s house in Grand Rapids after my flight home to Houston was cancelled last night due to Storm Imelda and flooding. Hoping to make it home today. My week of rural bliss with lakes and birds and animals, not to mention great food and fresh fruit, has been so relaxing. Best of all is the glorious Indian Summer weather! I don’t have any of the L perfumes. SOTD is Amouage Gold from the little samp,e I brought with me.

Sorry no L here! (Except for Lalique)
I had a craving for flowers, but not too frivolous or too sheer, also not too dark or too heavy.

I grabbed ‘Au delà Narcisse’, by Bruno Fazzolari

Perfect fit for weather as well.
It sunny today, 64 degrees Fahrenheit. Forecast for the whole weekend is even better with temperatures well into the 70s. But i fear that’s the last of summer, next week will be rainy and colder and it makes me sad ?

I watched Hip hop evolution on Netflix last week. Its not groundbreaking or very profound, but it offers a nice overview of the important devlopments and scenes (NYC, LA, Oakland, Atlanta, Detroit) and sometimes tries to put it in a socio-historical context (its history done ‘light’ though)
Mostly they show footage from the archives combined with short interviews(soundbites) with all the big artists. Interviews were recorded today btw.
So if you are interested in the genre you should give it a try. But dont expect thought provoking stuff. ☺️

He is good! Though I am not very familiar with his own work, to be honest.
I learned from Jazzmatazz and a Tribe called quest / de la soul, that there is more to hip hop than just gangsta rap.

I am not the most hardcore or most knowledgeable fan, but I listen to stuff like Mos Def, Q-tip, Missy Elliott, De la soul, Run the jewels and Outkast.

There are lots of artists I find problematic because of their lyrics (homophobic, misogynistic) and lifestyle…but darn….sometimes I just cant help listening to Wu Tang Clan, Biggie (dumbest lyrics, great delivery), early Eminem…. They were/are so good.
I mean, I cannot even read a poem out loud decently when i have the text printed in front of me ?

Hi! I’m in my only L – Lolita lempicka.
It is lovely in autumn light.

Tea is green tea-lemon pie, delicious.

Baby and I are sitting waiting for a delayed DHL delivery but we would like to go to the climate change match in our park which starts in 20mins.

On the fragrance topic i find myself lusting for fragrances with a high church/Catholic scent with incense. I think i’m going to order a samp!e of CDG Avignon. I also ave always fancied Etro Messe d minuit but it seems impossible to get in the UK.
Has anyone in the UK/Europe had any experience with either of these?

Avignon is fabulous. I keep debating on if it is full bottle worthy. Poor lasting power (3 or 4 hours on skin) and I ask if it is worth the $95 off of Luckyscent. Even if I don’t get it, I have Zagorsk and Kyoto to satisfy me.

All the incense series is at Liberty, I got Etro Messe de Minuit on sale at Amazon, I think it was less than £40 but it was 2 or 3 years back, eBay has some Etro, you might save a search and wait for a good price.

I’ve only been to Liberty’s once, this past summer, but I recall it was when you enter through the smaller space full of fragrances into the main area, to your left, past the Dipthyques. Not sure this is super helpful, but I happened to try both Kyoto and Avignon there, that’s why I remember where they were located!

I’m not in Europe but have tried both Avignon and Messe de Minuit. Avignon was photorealistic church incense to me, while MdM smelled similar to Shalimar with incense added.

Have you considered the original Comme de Garcons EdP for an incense scent?

Going into work super late today instead of my normal time but get off at the same time. That’s okay with me though since I will be on vacation when I click out. I am stoked even though I am not going anywhere, just a week that I don’t have to be at work. Spending the morning in Vanilla Flash. I don’t have any perfume house that begins with the letter L so it will probably be in Mitsouko to get through work.

Babassu carries the line, and in their shop in The Hague they were very easygoing about my just smelling everything. They also carry Astier de Villatte.

Dont know when I will be in The Hague again
I have applied for a job there, but no news yet if they want to invite me for an interview…

I’ll probably visit in October or november anyways for the Monet and the Dior exhibitions in the Gemeentemuseum. ?

Oh, I hadn’t heard about that one. It sounds tempting, Monet more so than Dior though.
Plus the Gemeentemuseum has some wonderful Weissenbruchs.

If you do start trying Lubins, please don’t forget Idole. It’s by Giacobetti, and I guess you might like it quite a bit.

    Happy Friday!

    1) Am in Belle Du Soir by Le Labo- this rainy day called for it! Interesting, this scent after all these years stayed a rich woody chypre scent, very dry, but now dries down to a powder.

    2) More rain rain rain this weekend, which means getting braids put into my hair, Pilate classes and OKTOBERFEST.

Has anyone watched The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance series on Netflix? Gosh, it’s so good! What a great cast and the puppets and set design are so impressive.

You’re right that the original movie is dark and disturbing. We watched it again right before starting the series. The series is not quite as dark and is also quite funny at times. I’ve laughed out loud while watching it.

Ever smell a perfume and find that the scent does not match the publicized notes in the least? I got this sample from Pixel–blank dauber in a slick pouch labeled Edward Bess, Last Night. Maybe there was a mix-up at the distributor? Supposed to be rose, leather, and smoke. I am dreadful at identifying notes, but am getting a titch of creme brule and lemon grass…. so go figure. Guess I should stick to my day job. Speaking of which, now four days out I can speak of the near catastrophe I had on Tues.

Off topic rant, as Hajusuuri would say: Was typing away mid-morning on a 50 page document for work that was killing me, when I heard the tiniest “pffft”, and my screen went blank. However, the problem was not with my screen, it was my PC, and neither love nor money was going to bring it back to life. On top of decades of photos and work files, transcripts, book drafts, and articles, I had pages of work due this week all primed to be sent out… I had two back-up systems. One failed completely, One had all my content except the most recent–past couple of days. As it turned out, Best Buy was able to retrieve ALL the content from my hard drive before they shipped my computer back to the manufacturer… but it was days of incredible stress. My fancy new computer was only 9 months old! Am working now on a tiny laptop–BB says three weeks until I get my old computer or new computer back…

    People, back up your S%#T!

Thank you! I managed to consume an entire, huge bag of Lay’s potato chips without really registering what I was doing–so stressed was I on Wed. Feeling decidedly ill, I double-checked what I had purchased: “Fried Pickles and Ranch” flavored chips. Anyway, today I am drinking copious amounts of herbal tea and giving baleful looks to this tiny little thing my husband tells me is a computer.

Today I am singing along with the voice in my head going, “A long, long time ago, I can still remember how that music used to make me smile.” It was everywhere on the radio when I had my first job as an order clerk on Seventh Avenue at Kay Windsor, “The Look You Love.” They fired me and the switchboard operator (remember those?) just short of the one-year mark when they had to start giving us benefits.

For me, yes. Wander is very short lived but lively, kind of like jumping out of bed on a sunny weekend morning and smelling the fresh air and garden. I found that most of the Tauers seemed to share a long lasting, fuzzy base and although I like them I think I would get bored after the first hour.

Wander Through the Parks is showing up heavily discounted online. Fragrance.com has it as does fragrancenet and the price is insane $66 for 100 ml. I think the newer Miller Harris releases are more readily available. If I am not mistaken even Sephora is selling them (or at least they were last I looked)

No points for me. Sotd is Terracotta. My only L ‘s are Lolita Lempeka and LouLou. Since its 85 degrees, neither would work. Apparently today is Jean day at work, so everyone is wearing jeans, except me. The lunch room calendar has jean day listed for oct 20, but I guess that was a misprint? Or nobody else looked at the month, idk..
Also, now im wondering how french people say jeans? Lol, Aurora?, remember to laugh with me people ?

Hello Lillyjo, we say jeans too in French. But denim’s origin is de Nimes, ‘from Nimes’, the town of Nimes where the fabric came from.

Opting for partial credit today in La Maison de la Vanille Vanille Fleurie de Tahiti, a soft oriental floral blend of bergamot, amber, fruit, cedar, ylang ylang, tonka bean, incense, and, of course, vanilla! It’s a bit sweet, slightly gourmand, a nice comfort scent for one of those weeks when everything’s gone awry.

Took the cat who broke 3 bones in her foot a couple of weeks ago to the vet today for another X-ray and to check her progress, only to find it’s not healing at all and is actually worse. A visit to a specialist was recommended; she may need to have the bones reset and pins inserted in order to heal properly. A weekend with heavy rains and possible flooding on Sunday will end this crummy week. But, like one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite folk singers says, “It’ll get better, it’ll get better, it’ll get better – I suppose.” I’m so looking forward to October!

    Happy weekend to all!

Thanks all for your kind thoughts. The day ended on a brighter note with supper at our favorite local fish diner -family-owned since 1951 – the next best thing to a trip to New England! I shared some leftover catfish with kitty, and she purred and trilled in my lap when I sang to her, ‘It’ll get better, it’ll get better . . . ‘

The swapmeet made me not participate on topic – in Old Money, which has faded by now, which is fine, because I have a rehearsal tonight that is strictly scent-free due to an allergic horn player.
Question for everyone: I feel a very strong hankering to buy l’ambre des merveilles more or less blind. I really enjoyed wearing the regular merveilles last week but sometimes, I cannot handle it (headache), and I read that l’ambre is easier to wear. Does anyone have insight? Is it very sweet? I don’t often like amber heavy fragrances. Thanks!

I found L’Ambre to smell similar to the original with the addition of a caramel note. Someone here described it as a popcorn ball recently (can’t remember who!) and I thought that was pretty accurate. It’s sweet, but I wouldn’t call it *very* sweet (coming from someone with very low sweet tolerance).

thanks for that input. Hmm…popcorn ball actually makes me hesitate a little. Maybe I should do the mature thing and wait until I can just smell it in person instead of getting lured in by the evil bay deal 🙂

I remember trying L’Ambre and liking it at first. It’s been too long since I tested it on skin to remember how it behaved. I can’t wear Eau des Merveilles at all.

I’m a huge fan of the original EdM and find the L’Ambre to be a little softer and, I would say, probably less headache-inducing. It is a little sweeter but I don’t think it’s as sweet as a popcorn ball. I was surprised to find that, on me, it’s not nearly as long-lasting as the original which I can put on once and get whiffs of all day. I like the l’Ambre In the fall and the Elixir in the winter. The Elixir is my second favorite of the Merveilles and the l’Ambre my third. I also have the Claire version which, it is heretical to say here at NST, is my least favorite of them all, too pale and powdery for my liking but still a pretty scent.

Thanks for your input! I have tried all of them when passing them by in department stores but never really paid attention properly. Now where I’m not near any store that carries l’ambre, it’s a lemming, of course.

You can buy a manufacturer’s sample of L’Ambre from FragranceNet for about $2. That’s where I got mine. I’ve only worn it once, and I don’t remember it being too sweet.

I think I did this a year or two ago but ended up swapping away the sample. But: today, at one of these fragrance doscount ships in an outlet mall, I managed to try l’ambre after all. Comparing with the eau right now….

More gorgeous weather today! The cats took full advantage of it by sunbathing in the bay window this afternoon. ????

My back is doing MUCH better today, so that’s also a bonus. ?

SOTD = L’Artisan Timbuktu. No small “L” scents for me today.

I sniffed my tin of LUSH Lust and decided I wasn’t quite in the mood for that. I could swear that I have one lone Les Parfums de Rosines sample in my stash, but it utterly refuses to be found.

Oh, missed opportunity for me with Lush! I have a couple of their frags.

Sounds like the cats are very saavy; they usually have the best spot in the house. Glad your back is better today! I’ve struggled with that and sciatica, so literally I feel your pain.

Thanks Gail! It seems like cats are little furry solar cells… they take up the sun every chance they get!

I missed the entry about your back being bad, but I’m glad it’s better.

Some days I get here relatively early and read comments, some days I don’t get here until midnight, and then it feels like it’s kind of late to comment.

I read an article recently about how scientists are pretty sure that domestic cats are descended from African cats. They say that domestic cats have quite a high tolerance for heat. I guess as long as they can move away when they’ve had enough, and get water when they need it, they’re quite happy to lie in the sun for hours at a time.

One of the cats we had before the current batch used to hang out RIGHT in front of the fireplace in winter when we would light it. Her fur would get uncomfortably warm to my touch, but she was perfectly happy.

Scent of the afternoon: Guerlain Eau de Cologne du Coq. I liked it. It didn’t smell old-fashioned to me. Not that “old-fashioned” is a bad thing, but it takes me a bit to get used to those. Scent yesterday evening was Eau de Cologne Imperiale, and it took me a little while to get used to it.

I’ve had a lot of fun getting stuff from Surrender to Chance over the summer. When I mentioned Guerlain being one of the lines when they had a fairly recent line sale, nancyleandros said she’d send me samples of the Eau de Cologne Imperiale, and samples of some of the other fragrances I was wondering about. Nancy sent *quite* a variety of samples. (Thank you, Nancy!) So I’ve got a number of Guerlain samples to try now, and samples from other houses. I still have some to try from the freebiemeet, too. (Thank you, ladies!)

Maybe we can find a place to meet that’s not my house, and I can bring bags of samples with me for us to try. 🙂

Yay ,I’m participating! Trying a sample of Liquid Imaginaires Desert Suave. The closest thing I can compare it to is Zoologist Camel, but I haven’t done a side-by-side. I think i will do that when I get home from work.
I’m home now, I have both on, Desert Suave seems very close to a version of Camel without the camel “funk”.
