Thursday scent of the day 9/19

Posted by Robin on 19 September 2019 226 Comments

Ahoy! ’tis Almost-Friday, and International Talk Like a Pirate Day! What fragrance be ye wearin?

Me: still at the beach. No pirates, no perfume. Last night was a (happy) repeat of the night before... Azemour Les Orangers from Parfum d'Empire.

Reminder: on 9/20, wear a fragrance by Laboratorio Olfattivo, Lubin, La Via del Profumo, Les Parfums de Rosine or Liquides Imaginaires, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter L.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is The sea from Cartagena's fortresses built by the Spanish to defend it - Engineering works took well over 208 years and ended with some eleven kilometres of walls surrounding the city [cropped] by Jorge Láscar at flickr; some rights reserved.

    Beautiful picture, Robin!
In Frederic Malle Lipstick Rose (thanks to a very generous NSTer). Perfect for a very crisp, cool, sunny, still summer day. Love it!

First I should say Mon Guerlain in the original version last about 5 seconds on me, I think because I can’t smell the musk (or that is what Robin thinks, and I think she is right) I smell more vanilla in this one but that could just be my skin that tends to project sweets more.

So after 2 subway rides, washing my hands several times and the dishes I can say that I still smell it! Which is surprising …

I am on the Guerlinade dry down of musk and their vanilla..comfy for this weather today.

That photo is beautiful and I’d love to be there right now sitting and gazing out to the sea.

On 2nd up of coffee at the moment and 2nd day of Libre by YSL.
Sprayed an extra spray and probably a bit too much, this stuff is strong! But like it very much.

Ahoy to you too, mateys! SOT(y)D was Acqua Di Gio Essenza Pour Homme. I liked it, and the gal who works at the bookstore where I stopped in on my break liked it too, saying she’s not a big fan of ‘girlie’ perfumes, and that she may look this one up for her husband.

I love it when strange people stop you in the middle of somewhere and compliment you on your scent. No greater honor.

Good morning Y’all! If FriYAY doesn’t hurry and get here, I’m gonna walk the plank Maties! :)

Wearing a ‘fume I haven’t smelled in many many years: Britney Spears Curious. At the moment it’s wearing a bit heavy for my taste, but the drydown is really great (and the Perfume Grinch is off today)…..

Smelly factoid: Waaaaay back in 2004, my brother-in-law worked in marketing for Elizabeth Arden, and he was one of the guys in charge of launching Curious! He traveled for MONTHS to different dept stores making sure the displays were right and the SAs were trained, and he also scheduled Ms. Spears’ appearances at some of the big city dept stores. That’s the ONLY claim to fame to perfume that I have…. HA HA HA I remember having some Curious swag, such as t-shirts and bags and such….. :) Hard to believe that was 15 yrs ago!

Visiting my BFF in Switzerland – yeahhhh – wearing samples. Today Chanel Paris-Biarritz, the only Les Eaux I don’t have a FB of. And I know why. A bit too tart for my taste. Unfortunately I haven’t seen any Andy Tauer perfumes here yet….

Also getting mentally ready for fall and considering buying Organza Indence to help me with that.

I will be traveling tomorrow to a cabin in southern Ohio (can’t wait!!), so I’m doing the CP today with Lalique Encre Noir. Got my decant in the swapmeet and it arrived just in time to participate in the CP. I’m really into it so far. The opening citrusy-woody notes remind me a bit of Atelier Cologne Bois Blonds, which is another favorite of mine.

I’m in Guerlain AA Nerolia Bianca thanks to a generous NSTer. It’s muggy here again today and it just started to sprinkle but I can still see glimpses of the sun off in the distance, so there is hope.

My husband, daughter and I have tickets to the Downton Abbey premiere tonight! I’m so excited! The three of us started binging the series last fall after the bigs left for college. We had no idea when we finished last winter that they would be making a movie. The timing is perfect.

I’m actually not sure. I could only get it on A.M radio. They only played only the current heavy metal of the time. From Metallica, Hanoi Rocks, Faster Pussycat.. etc
I was just trying to think of a band this morning and remembered Z-Rock. I thought you, or maybe Jalapeno were fellow listeners.

Ha! I knew I couldn’t be the only one! The band I am trying to remember was a guy band but had a female singer. They were glam rock, and I only ever heard them on Z-Rock. I think thier name started with a D? Idk.. It’s been making me crazy.

AdP Iris Nobile EDT which works perfectly for this cool, sunny day. I broke open the new-to-me can of New Orleans’s Cafe du Monde French toast and chicory blend coffee. Really good! I bought it at the local pho restaurant. I’m curious about the Vietnam/New Orleans connection (French colony?). I saw a documentary once about Vietnamese funeral rites and they are similar to a NO style funeral procession.

Viet Nam was formerly French Indochine, or part of it, but the French were fighting various Vietnamese guerilla armies that wanted an independent (and Communist) Viet Nam for some years. The French Foreign Legion military compound at Dien Bien Phu was besieged by Vietnamese forces and eventually conquered.

There was a legacy of some Vietnamese people speaking French and being familiar with some aspects of French culture and cuisine. So there is a colonial connection there.

Good morning, fragrant friends! So happy to get to check in today. I’ve been in a house hunting whirlwind in Cali and trying not to get discouraged. We have found two we liked, put in offers, and were outbid. Definitely a seller’s market out there right now.

Traveled to Alabama yesterday to see my son and for a cousin’s wedding. It’s nice to relax from the move and see family. I’m wearing No. 5 lotion and body powder right now (my aunt’s) and may top it with a little spray of the edt when I leave the house. I usually don’t love it it but the body lotion and powder work for me!

It is fall here in my part of the PNW. Sometimes we have heat and sun well into October, but this year cool temps and rain arrived about ten days ago and appear to be staying. The furnace came on this morning and I think I will have to put the summer clothes in the guest room closet until next year. I get to wear all my big orientals now! But today I think I’m going with Saffran Troublant.

Wearing Misia edt this afternoon, it’s very warm and sunny today, and I usually prefer it when it’s chilly outside, but it’s still nice.
I dropped the kids at school film night, and took the dog for a long walk in the woods, the autumnal light was so beautiful, shimmering and golden dappled through the trees, the air smelt of apples from the windfalls on the ground, there are branches overloaded with elderberries, and blackberries, as well as bright ruby red hawthorn berries and rosehips. I’ll go back with the children and a couple of baskets soon.
Thank u to everyone who sent me such kind and comforting words of support yesterday, I’m so grateful and thankful for many things, this wonderful place is among them.
Sending perfumed hugs and gratitude to u all.

Your walk sounds wonderful. Yesterday morning was one of those perfect days here, cool but with sun, no wind and I found a beautiful spot on the hill with a view of the glassy harbour, with the big Pacific ocean beyond and just sat. Someone has planted a whole forest of natuve trees which will grow big and attract more nectar feeding birds like the Tui…anyway, from now on that spot is the Mayfly field.

    Hello all!

    1) The rains are HERE. Which is fine! The nasturtiums are loving this weather and have actually never looked better; I have trimmed them for salads and pesto and with all the rain and mild temps they have only thrived!
Perversely, the long suffering basil have decided, at long last, to make their presence known and grown like crazy. *rolls eyes* absurd!

    2) Am in Fresh Cream Soft Suede- very easy to wear musky warm scent that is very light.

They are so CUTE. The flowers are cute, the leaves are darlings! And they are edible- like a sweet watercress! So if you bake a cake, you could decorate with the flowers, and the leaves are wonderful and unexpected in salads! You could even use the seedpods (when green) in a pesto.

Smelling amazing in La Via del Profumo Tawaf. When I kissed my boyfriend goodbye this morning, told me I smell like flowers. ?

I just got invited to go kayaking on Lake Union, which is the gorgeous lake right in the center of Seattle, on Saturday. My friend also has a gift certificate for a really great Mexican restatement on the lake, so we’ll get lunch there afterwards. I’ve never been kayaking before. I anticipate my flabby arms being quite sore for a while.

It takes a while to get good form, but if you do it right your arms shouldn’t hurt (well, on your first outing they probably will).

You want to use torso rotation to power the stroke from your core, not your arm muscles. I also find it helpful to think about pushing the paddle at the top of the stroke rather than pulling the paddle through the water at the bottom of the stroke. A good kayak educator once said something like “you’re not shoveling water.”

Take a few minutes to watch a video on YouTube, it will really help with your ergonomics and not being sore in the wrong places. (When I paddle it’s my latissimus dorsi that are sore, not my arms, and it’s the good kind of sore!)

      Have fun!!

Chergui, to me, is best the next day when one catches whiffs on clothes and scarves. On skin, it tends to be just a “li-ittle bit” too much for me.

I tried to understand Chergui for years, the notes sound like something I would love but I didn’t like it. Then I received some from someone here as a freebie or a swap and all at once, it smelled gorgeous. I’m glad that I can enjoy it now.

Trying samples I have to follow up on some last minute swapping I inquired about. A couple of hours earlier: Ormonde Jayne Ormonde Woman. Strong, and it was wearing me. A couple of the folks I contacted were interested in incense, so a little while after I washed off the OJ Woman I tried Acqua di Parma Colonia Mirra Eau de Cologne Concentree. I find it very, very nice, but it’s just the sort of thing Mom particularly loathes.

With the weather temporarily a little cooler, I’ll be able to go outside to try some of the heavier perfumes. lol. Tolu has notes I think I’d like, but it will probably wear me, too. Sampaquita was much lower-key than I’d been expecting.

Sampaquita did not capture my interest. But I really like Frangipani, Osmanthus, Champaca, Ta’if & Isfarkand.

All heavy on the iso e super, so if you don’t like iso e super they’re hardly worth trying.

Thank you for the information. I’m never quite sure how much iso e super I’m sensing from a fragrance. Rayleighblue sent me an Escentric Molecules sample some time ago — I need to try that to see what exactly I’m able to perceive of it. But I got the Ormonde Jayne discovery set a few months ago, and I still haven’t gotten the chance to try most of the samples in that.

I think if you try the EM, then the OJs I mentioned, you will quickly see the commonality :-)

So easy to find at discounters! I had a small bottle that I ended up giving away a few years back- it was similar to Barbara Bui which I already had and preferred.

In Private Collection Jasmine White Moss, my bottle is well on its way to being emptied but I have 2 BUBS which is a bit ridiculous but this scent stand in not only for itself but for Chanel Cristalle too so I know I will be using them.

Exactly my feelings about JWM. I only have the one bottle, but since I scooped it up when it was in the stockroom about to be sent back, it still felt like a triumph.

Friday here, and I was planning to wear Idole by Lubin, but it doesn’t seem right with my clothes, so I’m going with Sortilège.
Le Galion and Lubin aren’t very similar words, but I tend to mix them up, so I’m connected to the CP in my own muddled way :)

Joining the CP in Lubin Idole today and yes, I DO smell great. Smells like fall but it’s not too heavy for the hot weather we’re experiencing right now.

Thursday is out to lunch day with my mother. Two weeks ago she suffered an esophageal blockage that required ten hours in the ER before surgery was performed, the second time this has happened. Now she’s gone from a soft diet to a liquid diet which isn’t fun when you’re 92 and life’s pleasures disappear one by one but she had part of a strawberry milkshake today and enjoyed getting out. On the way home, I drove by a spectacular dahlia garden so she could see it; it’s that time when zinnias and dahlias are waning and chrysanthemums aren’t blooming yet. Come on, fall!

Ahoy all ye perfumed scallywags! Ye be smelling grand as always! ?

And now that I’ve gotten that out of my system, back to mundane reality. It is now Day 2 of the Worst Back Ache Ever, at least for me. Advil does take the edge off. Some very gentle stretching and a hot shower have also helped. I honestly have not the slightest clue what I did to make myself so stiff and sore. WTH?

SOTD = Tom Ford Moss Breches, from the sample/decant stash. A quiet Tom Ford scent does exist on my skin… and this is it.

Sorry about your back and I hope it straightened itself out soon! I know that every time I end up sleeping on my stomach, I end up in all sorts of back/neck pain that takes a day to resolve.
And I always pronounce that perfume “Moss Breeches” in my head ?

I think that maybe something did happen one night when I was sleeping. Sharing a bed with cats does have its hazards. ?

I have also pronounced it as “Moss Breeches”, and have a great vision of a Renaissance faire costume to go with it.

Moss Breches is one of the old, discontinued TFs. It may be quiet but it is a lovely chypre.

Just left 10 minutes ago to go home as there were 2 unexpected calls after 5pm.

I repeated yesterday’s SOTD = SL Fourreau Noir

It was so so good I decided to wear in again today!

In other news, I got the case files yesterday and confirmed that I was indeed missing 38 pages from when I requested the file Wu backbwhen I was preparing for the Level 2 appeal. Both the Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) and the Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) withheld information from me. I can prove a pattern of withholding information by the QIO and need to figure out how to cast doubt on the SNF misunderstanding what I had asked for and still withheld the relevant info. I have my work cut out for me tomorrow after work and on Saturday!
