Tuesday scent of the day 9/17

Posted by Robin on 17 September 2019 188 Comments

Happy Tuesday! It's also International Country Music Day and Constitution Day. (Plus, the swapmeet is open for the rest of the day.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm still at the beach. No perfume, but smelling like a creamsicle in Weleda Sea Buckthorn lotion. Tea at the moment is some very basic Irish Breakfast with a dash of cinnamon.

Reminder: on 9/20, wear a fragrance by Laboratorio Olfattivo, Lubin, La Via del Profumo, Les Parfums de Rosine or Liquides Imaginaires, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter L.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Ocean Jellyfish teapot by Hering Berlin is $614 (ouch!) at TableArt.

I’m wearing Paestum Rose, which I’ve been trying to find for a while. I’ve wanted a decant, but couldn’t get it at either STC or TPC. Finally I got an email from Scent Split about a sale, and found it there. I bought a 6ml decant. It was worth the blind buy. I’m really enjoying it. On my skin it started out as a very peppery rose. I’m looking forward to the rest of it’s development.

Oh, cool teapot but a bit out of my price range.

SOTD is AG Ninfeo Mio because it was mentioned yesterday and because of the weather. I won’t go into how ridiculous it it, but yesterday I looked at the temps arcross the US and it shook me right down to my DNA. Scary.

The flip side is I got some good news yesterday! To celebrate, I upgraded my old iPhone to a new one, so I’m excited to get it.

It’s ironic today is National Constitution Day. That’s about all i can say without getting political. ?

    Happy Tuesday fragrant folk!

It is very tasty. Here is the description on the paper bag it came in:

“This lightly rolled tea is subtly pan-fired to make a lighter cup and mellow taste, and blossoms with a touch of honey.”

Woke up this morning to Mitsouko (current version) to say goodbye to my aunt. Wearing Hedonist today while looking at the travel set for Hedonist. I forgot how lovely it is. I think that I did have a liking for the rose flanker of Hedonist but haven’t smelled the cassis yet. Three 15 ml travel sprays for $135 on Luckyscent but I still am debating on this travel set, Avignon and Lonestar Memories are the three I am torn between.

I started the day testing a free sample that came with a recent purchase, L’Aromarine 1936 Special for the ‘L” . It was just a basic vanilla scent so I washed it off and sprayed some Datura Noir. Ahh, that’s much better! I wanted to watch part 2 of the country music documentary on PBS last night but just didn’t make it. I hope they run it again soon.

Gosh, it’s been ages since I’ve smelled a L’Aromarine scent. All I can remember is thinking that one of them smelled an awful lot like root beer, in a good way, and that the labels were pretty.

You smell narcotically pretty in Datura Noir!

SOTD Cire Trudon Bruma which works perfectly with today’s sunny, mild weather. I think I can add this to the weekend “sweet” poll. I think this is a beautiful perfume, but would probably like it even more if it were a tad less sweet (and amped up lavender). I might try layering over some lavender lotion next time.

Cap Neroli for a day full of meetings. (First up is a monthly lunch meeting, which I actually look forward to because it’s usually good food!)

Today’s tea is Republic of Tea’s Republic Chai.

I took a lampworking class over the weekend and made 10 glass beads. Just went to pick them up yesterday, as they needed a few hours in the kiln. They’re really lovely! I’m wearing three of them on a necklace today.

I think the roses you are referring to are Rosa rugosa and they smell heavenly. They have naturalized all over the coast of Rhode Island and I always look forward to the smell of salt air and these roses.

Yup, I’d agree with that identification, and expand the range to say “naturalized over a considerable amount of the Atlantic coast of North America.” I’m using USDA climate zones here, but I’d say probably north to Zone 4 and south at least through Zone 7.

The one that’s presumed to be the species or close to it has pink flowers with a delicious clove scent, and hips that are like tomatoes in color and shape. “Rugosa” comes from the wrinkles in their leaves. As noted above, they’re hardy temperature-wise, and less bothered by some harmful insects and diseases than various other sorts of roses. Bees love the flowers. They rebloom during the summer.

If you’re considering one for a garden, keep in mind that some varieties of rugosa rose grow 8′ tall and 6′ wide, and most of them are extremely prickly. Some of the cultivars are considerably less hardy than the species. One I think is very pretty is the ‘Alba’ variant on that original pink one. The flowers also have that lovely clove scent. Not all of the hybrids have that fragrance.

Woke up still smelling the Lolita Lempicka I wore to bed last night, and decided to just carry on with it today. Today will unfortunately be full of laundry and household chores.

Cool teapot, but the price is crazy. I’ve never thought to put cinnamon in tea, will have to try it. My cuppa this morning was Kusmi St. Petersburg. I don’t usually repurchase reas, with the exception of Yorkshire Gold and Twinings Strong English breakfast, but will probably end up getting another tin of the St. Petersburg.

Just looked these up, they sound great! I sprinkle cinnamon and /or nutmeg in lattes all the time. Never thought about cinnamon in breakfast tea before. There is a cinnamon based tea from Celestial Seasonings called Bengal Spice that I’m a big fan of. Great hot or iced.

The chunks are really nice to have for hot drinks — for anything else we use sticks or powder. I keep cardamom in a spice grinder for tea as well. My tea arrangements are kind of similar to my scenting arrangements, LOL…over the top.

I’m in Olfactive Studios Autoportrait today for its dry iris and incense vibe. We’ve been setting rainfall records here in the Pacific Northwest and the humidity, combined with my broken internal temperature regulatory system, is … annoying. To say the least. Hey, Weather Gods, when I said I was looking forward to autumn, I meant the sunny, cool and crisp kind, not the windy drippy kind. Sheez.

Well I am all about celebrating Country Music Day. My husband and I have watched the first two episodes of Ken Burns’ country music documentary–it is so good.

I do have a caveat for Foxbins, that the program is a veritable landmine for ear worms. Stuck in my head at the moment?

Oh, no I never got over those blue eyes
    I see them every where
I miss those arms that held me

I had some friends with me, so a couple of hugs and I managed to pull myself together.

Now, post shower, I am awash in Parfums de Marly Herod, which is making me feel so much better. It is wonderful that perfume can so influence my emotional outlook. I am in a cloud of cinnamon, tobacco, incense and pepper!

***** Medicare rant. Skip ifnot interested. *****

Since August 23rd, I kept getting a call from a number in Maryland. No message except last Friday, so I called back and got voicemail and I did not bother to leave a message. It was the supposedly impartial company hired by the QIO (Quality Improvement Organization) affiliated with the junky Medicare Advantage program (Medicare Part C – remember NEVER sign up for this; stick to Part A, B and Medigap). They wanted feedback on the Level 2 Appeal I did from waaaay back in the 3rd week of June. ? I wonder if my Level 3 (Federal) appeal had something to do with it? I answered yet another call yesterday, let the person go through her spiel and just told her what is the point, she (my mom) passed away. What I should have said was “Do you wish to speak to the Beneficiary, meaning my mom?” If the person said yes, my response back would have been “OK, you can speak to her once you figure out how to resurrect someone,” and gauge her reaction. Seriously? Fool me once, shame on me (I gave them my feedback for the Level 1 appeal), fool me twice, shame on you. I hope to get the case file in the next day or two so I can send back additional supporting documentation on the violation of my mom’s rights to information. I hope the judge also sees the pattern of the QIO and the “skilled-nursing” facility (SNF) withholding information. The Medicare system is ripe for abuse – denial of coverage means Medicare does not pay and the SNF gets paid more because they are no longer limited to the negotiated rate but can prey on the consumer. I figured out that the SNF got an extra $55 per day for the first 30 days and $130 more per day past the 30 days. Both Medicare Advantage and this particular SNF are for profit. It’s a lucrative arrangement if the $s are coming out of someone else’s pocket. Believe me, they did a credit check for ability to pay and decided which patients to deny coverage! This feels like David vs. Goliath but I will forge on!

Ugh. What Meredifay said. But I will add that it starts with SNF documentation, or lack thereof. My friends FIL is back in a hospital (in NJ), transferred there from the rehab he was at briefly. Her husband discovered that while questioning the rehab MD about his father’s condition, that the MD didn’t know anything about the patient’s history or why he was at rehab, and admitted this to him!! ? I told him to start asking for copies of care records or recording conversations. And this is a “good” rehab (Kessler)!
Anyway, I hope you get a good outcome.

It’s been an absolutely gorgeous late summer day here: bright blue sky and temps in the upper 70’s F. More please! ???

I’ve been watch the new Ken Burns documentary on country music for the past couple of nights, and have been mildly shocked to hear how much of it is familiar to me. Country music was my dad’s thing.

SOTD = Providence Perfume Company’s Rose Boheme EdP, from the sample stash and Jepster. Wearing this is like seeing a rose age in reverse. It starts off a dried rose potpourri and gets fresher as time goes by. Plenty of patchouli in this, so patch-phobes should give this a wide berth. ?

I am enjoying the documentary as well. Although, I’m having a hard time staying awake to watch it. I’m probably missing half of it each night.
Rose Boheme was one my early loves when I first fell down the rabbit hole. I have a small bottle but don’t wear it so often anymore. Charna had a fire in her shop a few years ago and lost much of her authentic raw materials so it was probably refo’d. My bottle smells lovely (rose, patch, tea, oud) but is a cold weather scent for me.

I know a fair amount of classic country music…I was a waitress in a place with a country jukebox. I hated it at first, then it all grew on me. So looking forward to seeing it.

Finally checking in….spent the day clearing stuff out of attic and garage to go to an auction….I just smell stinky, but after a shower I will be delightful in some Chanel Paris-Deauville.

Isn’t a shower after a good bit of work a great thing? ?

I really need to catch up on Ken Burns’s work. SOTD is Shalimar Souffle Intense. Afraid it tends to turn cloying. May not be a long-term keeper. I may have to attempt scrubbing it from my chest and putting on something else.
I am paying for fresh air and yard work. I rubbed a big blister on my right thumb mowing the grass on Sunday and now have an infected thumb to show for it. And I’m right-handed! Got one of my partners at work to prescribe antibiotics for me. Hoping they will be kicking in by morning.

Wearing the residual drops of my OJ Ormonde Elixir from my sample vial. It seems to have just the right amount of Oud, it is never overpowering and still smells much the same as OJ Woman, but perhaps a tiny bit less floral? The longevity is good and I can’t commit to the sillage yet since I was outdoors mostly but I did get a nice breeze by & backdraft that reminded me who was smelling good!

Wearing some L’Heure Bleue edp tonight. I took a few neglected bottles out of their boxes and arranged them on the dresser for a change of pace. I will try out a few rotations and see what stands out.

Lowbrow tv enjoyment has been The Very Brady Renovation shown on HGTV. It will be fun to see it when its finished.

SOTD generously applied SJP Lovely. I haven’t worn this since spring and found it to be a nice change from my summer rotation.
