Friday scent of the day 8/23

Posted by Robin on 23 August 2019 226 Comments

It's Nouveau Niche Friday! (Also, the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.) Our community project for today: wear a fragrance from a new (2017 or after) indie or niche brand.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I went with Arielle Shoshana Saturday. I imagine I will have lots of twins today.

Reminder: 8/30 is National Slinky Day. Wear your most frivolous fragrance. Extra points if it's frivolous AND an enduring classic.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

We should have some sort of point system for subverting the CP, shouldn’t we?

We SHOULD! But Bear and BobH would just take turns winning. And they would occasionally (and very generously) let pyramus take the honors. :)

I used to have the Bvlgari Eau de Vert. Nice, but unfortunately it is very, very fleeting. Once I finished my full bottle I never replaced it for the same reason.

Good morning and Happy FriYAY Y’all!

Well, I was all set to wear ELdO I am Trash, but I was racing out the door this morning and it just didn’t happen.

Soooooo, in the spirit of the challenge, I’m gonna pretend that the challenge is to be Nouveau RICHE. Wearing Dolce and Gabbana Light Blue Dreaming in Portofino, and pretending like I finally won the GA Lottery and have money to spend traveling there…..

    Have a great weekend y’all! :)

I’m doing more like an “oldeau” niche today. Le Labo Limette 37. I realized I don’t have any perfume from brands that are so young…

Oh wait! I do have with me a travel spray of Orange x Santal from Essential Parfums – they are 2018 brand. But it’s not a sotd ?

Happy Friday! I’m in Fyori 3 from Otentic. A friend bought it for me in the Netherlands. I’m not particularly fond of it, but I love her, so I keep it in my desk drawer and use it as my “work perfume,” and I still smile when I wear it.

Good morning all! I haven’t been here in ages (it’s been a challenging year), and can’t participate because I have NOTHING of the newer brands. After I do some cleaning and shower, I will put on some Bruno Fazzolari. That is the newest of niche I have, and it has quickly become one of my favorite houses. I have Lampblack, Monserrat, and Unsettled, and would like to get Feu Secret and Ummagumma.

I almost never smell anything until a couple years after it comes out, but I do have First Cut after reading many recommendations for St Clair Scents here. It is a revelation, I feel like I’m walking around in a cloud of my childhood summers. Also, it is too new to be on Basenotes yet, which drives me crazy since I am a little obsessed with logging my SOTD on there.

New Jersey, but the rural part. I’m sure there was hay around somewhere. But what this reminds me most of is the time of year – around now, actually – where the grass is starting to get dried out, so it’s a mix of fresh and drying things. And going outside at twilight at that time of year, when the air has cooled but the ground is still warm, and maybe there are fireflies. I’m probably overselling the perfume at this point! I’m not sure it would have the same effect on anyone whose August backyard didn’t happen to smell just like this.

I guess it was exciting for me because it’s been too hot to enjoy the summer! A few days to cool off and actually use the porch furniture will suit me so long as summer comes back :-)

Ah, I have a very high heat tolerance and all my furniture is on a covered porch so I have the opposite problem. Will also add that less than 24 hrs of cool non-humid temps have pulled every ounce of moisture from my skin (!) :(

Got my stitches out today and the biopsy showed that it was just a regular mole. Working on getting some of my Christmas shopping done early and ended up finishing up gifts for three people already. Haven’t picked out a SOTD yet but I think that I will probably end up in either Jicky or vintage no 5.

I’m in Bvlgari Omnia, the original, in hopes of keeping my temper reined in.

WAS supposed to start back to work Monday, but today, they (the hospital) decided a physical preformed by a PA is not good enough, and it must be done by an MD. So, now my start date is pushed back until 9/9.

On a happier note, there are wonderful greenspaces here- bike, jogging and walking trails all along the river, as well as “bike stations” that allow for maintenance and airing up tires. While it’s a beautiful area now, sadly it’s a result of a catastrophic flood in 1997 that almost wiped out the entire town.
I have two weeks to really explore it now….?

Ha, no chance at that. It’s an expansion of the “dumning down” of businesses across the country. And so many feel saying “I’m sorry!” exempts them from the actual responsibility of having to clean their messy house. ?

Mine too. I can tell you this PA was much more thorough than any DOT MD I’ve been to. He did everything including PFT’s and phlebotomy. Such a waste of time (mine!) and money (theirs and mine, since I’ll have no income for the next 3 weeks). Plus, it’s messed up my insurance, which I COBRA’d until my original start date of 8/26. So now I’ll have no insurance for two weeks. Totally ticked. ?

It is. But I have talked to them about the insurance issue, so hoping they will bridge it until my start date. It’s a complicated mess because a contracted company makes all the arrangements for credentialing, and they are the ones who dropped the ball. ??‍♀️

I just looked up Soltice Scents’ full catalog of perfumes. It was a very fun read. Ever tried Crimson Sap & Sassafras? Notes are Dragon’s blood, sassafras, palo santo, anise, frankincense, marshmallow, benzoin, vanilla cream soda, and crimson musk!

How are you finding the SS perfumes? I could use me some Quiet Night . . .

A couple have asked about Blackburn’s Parlor. It is a spicy, boozy somewhat fruity vanilla to my nose.

I have enjoyed everything I have sampled from the line. I have tried the EDP sprays and my only concern is that the sillage and longevity aren’t that great but they are made in small batches and I just got these. There is a card enclosed with instructions that they need to rest to come into their own which is what others on Reddit have said too. I am going to put them aside and revisit in a month.

My favorites so far are Rose Mallow Cream, Nightgown, Estate Vanilla and today’s Blackburn is quite nice too.

Another smokey Alaskan morning…very much over it! But I’m meeting the CP in Gallivant London instead of admitting defeat, and it earned a boyfriend compliment this morning before we rushed off to work.

Saw the new movie Blinded By the Light the other day, about a Pakistani-British kid who falls in love with Springsteen. A little cheesy, but so joyful and sincere that you have to forgive it. If you want something that’s not a superhero movie but not a serious Oscar drama, give it a shot!

No points for me today. I planned on wearing Saturday, but it was fifty degrees this morning and I was freezing. My sotd is Mad Madame. I love this perfume. I blind bought it 4 or 5 years ago, when I had pneumonia. I had to wait till I recovered before I even opened it, so I wouldn’t give it a bad association.

I will squirt something on after yoga or put a dab of something in my cleavage before yoga and enjoy the tiny wafts of scent that only I can smell without disturbing my classmates. I think Robin had inquired whether there was a good banana scented shampoo? I am recommending this shampoo and conditioner for wavy and curly headed people, in particular, because it is fabulous and affordable. Pacifica Salty Waves Shampoo and Conditioner. Use both, it will not be hard, with notes of sea algae, banana and chia. Scalp itch gone, hair stays clean for up to five days, not too heavy, I have fine waves, or too light. Just about perfect. And the word is out because I cannot find it anywhere anymore so order from the Pacifica website.

Which JM? Surrender to Chance is having an 8ML sale and there are a few JM’s on the list. I put JM’s Wild Bluebell in my cart ($14.99 for 8 mls) but wound up just clicking out of the website before I pulled the trigger. It would be a blind buy–and even at that price I suddenly worried I’d be burdened with yet another large decant I would not like (10 mls of Comptoir Sud Pacifique Vanille Banane anyone?).

Plus, the 10 ml bottles of And the World Is Yours are only $30 . . . which is a perfume I actually want . . . (have some issues with the cumin but now thinking I’d like a small bottle) . . .

Anyway, talked myself down from it all. ;-)

      Any feedback on Wild Bluebell?

And as for Vanille Banane: my 2ml sample is 2ml too much! Now if I could magic wand that sample into some pancakes with bananas and maple syrup…

I only have niche older scents so no points and I am wearing Sebastiane Espresso Royale (2012) which should really be royal as espresso is masculine in French. I am not a fan of coffee note as a rule, this is not bad though as far as coffee goes, a bit one dimensional, I’m not transported by enthusiasm.

To answer your question on Belle d’Opium versus original Opium: yes, it is a lighter scent. It is also a different type of scent than its parent. The OG Opium is a spicy oriental to my nose, while the Belle is a fruitchouli, with little hints of incense. The bottle I have smells different than the manufacturer sample I had, which also had a gorgeous jasmine note in it.

SOTD = St. Clair Scents Gardener’s Glove

It is very well done and seamlessly blends citrus, flowers, animalics, earthiness and spice.

I wore it from a sample. It is most definitely FB worthy. I posted a picture on Insta. Noticeably absent is a pair of gloves because working in a garden is not in my DNA. I pretty much kill everything I touch in a garden so I pursue other interests.

For a change this year, I actually got my herbs repotted a month or two after I got them. Usually mine stay in their original little pots for several months.

I still have a box of iris rhizomes I got about a month ago, right when my back pain got particularly bad. I’m kind of afraid to look, but perhaps they can still get planted.

I went the complete opposite as I’ve got absolutely nothing in the new niche camp, not even knowing any new niche brands.
I’m wearing L’Artisan Parfumeur Vanilia which by my reckoning is one of the oldest, if not the oldest niche scent. I got my bottle discounted when it was discontinued. It’s a marvellously trashy scent that always puts me in a good mood. It also happens to have one of the funnier reviews in The Guide. “Enjoy it with a banana float, a sunburn and really loud music. There will always be time for refinement later.”

For today’s cp my SOTD is JD Jeffrey Dame Duality for Women, the first in his new fragrance brand from 2018, a soft floral/woody/spicey combo that’s lovely but much too sophisticated for my day’s activities: indulging in the domestic pleasure of hanging laundry on the line to dry in today’s sunny breeze (one that always instills a sense of gratitude at all I have), going to the pool one last time before it closes today (it’s a coolish but glorious sunny day so I’m going anyway) and since our favorite folk musician is back in town and playing nearby, we’re going to see him perform tonight.

Last weekend’s folk & smoke fest was fantastic – the scenic rural setting, talented musicians, and caring community all contributed to a much-needed respite of peace and love. Trying to keep this going as long as possible. Perhaps wearing a sophisticated fragrance for a day of simple pleasures is my Duality today?

Peace and Love to all this weekend!

I had to look that up, ever heard that term before. Since I live not too far from Lake Michigan, there’s lots of swimming beaches all up and down the shore that are very popular. I enjoy it sometimes but prefer the convenience – and safety – of a pool.

    Happy Friday!

    1) That is a heck of an also! For a starting place, please do try the 1619 project currently being done by the New York Times, which will then link to papers and various trade and academic books on slavery, ties to modern economy and consumer habits and so much more.

    2) I am in BeautyPie’s Petals, Heliotrope and Ambrette. It is a very pretty, beach vanilla scent; like many modern fragrances it has a big dose of ambroxan to pump things up and keep it ‘sheer’. It fades down to a very pretty skin scent, which is fine. Great for work and summer evenings, where it radiates in the warmth

As I said before with another BeautyPie fragrance it is a weird ‘buying club’ you pay to join, like Costco and then you get to buy their products- or you can buy their products at full price. I paid about $19 for the bottle- they say retail would be about $125 in a high end boutique, which for 3.5 ounces I can believe.

I’m again wearing some Areej le Dore scents, with one on each wrist. To the left we have the VERY potent and stinky Koh-i-Noor. This is white flowers turned extremely skanky by, I guess, wild Siberian deer musk. (Yeah I know, not generally my thing, but maybe somewhat responsibly harvested? I’m not sure.) This is a NSFW fragrance for sure! It becomes quite beautiful after, maybe, 12 hours or so! On my right is the also stinky Baikal Gris, claiming to have Indian ambergris, real Mysore sandalwood, and Russian fir balsam. It’s also got violet leaf, something I can pick up easily. The rest of it smells oddly metallic in an interesting but not particularly appealing way. I don’t get either sandalwood or balsam, so maybe it’s the ambergris that’s doing it. It says Indian ambergris. I’m not sure I’ve ever really smelled it before. I would not buy more of these perfumes because of the animal products in them, but trying them is kind of educational. For beauty, however, I would stick to, and buy if I could, his Malik al Taif, which I wore yesterday, and strongly recommend to anyone who likes a good pure strong rose note in perfume.

I thought real mysore was off limits these days. I wonder about the Indian ambergris. That’s where the whale or whale + ambergris washed up? Or is it some kind of claim about the origin of the whale?

The link above explains about the deer musk, but I couldn’t find anything more about the Mysore sandalwood. I found this informative review on kafkaesque. Typically, he finds much more in there than I noticed, but the indelicate white florals are definitely what struck me. His observation of a certain similarity with vintage L’heure bleue also was astute.

I’m learning by answering your questions. Ambergris is a controlled substance in India, sole only to those with a license. It’s found in deep sea and coastal regions. Areej Le Dore presumably obtained it legally. Whale products are illegal in the UK, US, and Australia, but ambergris as an excremental product is legal in parts of the world including Europe. Russian Adam also did a perfume based on Irish white ambergris. I assume this was found on the coast or North Sea where it was a legal product. Kafkaesque also did a review of Baikal Gris that was quite favorable. Interestingly, he compared it to St. Clair Scents First Cut!—which several NST-ers have been reporting on here.
PS If whale products are illegal in the US, I’m not sure how Luckyscent can sell this.

I don’t really have a hope of being able to join in (unless having joined the Kickstarter for the latest Arielle Shoshana and waiting on it to be ready counts somehow).

So I’m wearing the new*est* niche brand I have, which is La Curie Incendo, picked up while in Tucson in March. It would be a bit too heavy for summer, except that I live in the Northwest and it’s chilly and overcast, so it kinda works.

I wasn’t ready for it to be fall so quickly! But, school starts in a little over a week, so we’re just about back in it, I guess. Wish we’d have had a bit more of a summer here this year, but at least there weren’t major forest fires, so that’s something to be thankful for.

I’m wearing Rogue Perfumery Derviche this morning, from 2018. I could have joined Calypso in Koh-i-Noor this morning, but I don’t get skank, I get sour, I think from the oud. I couldn’t make it to the drydown, had to scrub. Too bad, I had such high hopes, and I love skank.

    LOVE that terra-cotta candle Robin!
Commando now as I head to the gym afterwards:
SOTD is going to be Heretic: Florgasm.

I tried their Smudge and honestly it is amazing and smells better than any smudge I have.
It is strong and little really does the trick.
If it had mad money I would surely own it and a BUB.

I wracked my brain, pored over my perfume spreadsheet, and discovered that I have just one scent that fits today’s CP: JD Duality Woman. Whew, saved by Mr. Dame!

I like it a lot. I’ve only worn it a few times so far—dabbed, since I have the oil. I detect mostly the balsamic/resinous aspects (I could probably pick out the ylang and other notes if I tried it on a strip), but it has a nice round, well-blended feel. It has good projection and longevity, too. I really want to try the Labdanum Doux.

This was a sample I got in King of Prussia, at the Neimann Marcus, where I met up with Jalapeno. I’ll certainly enjoy the sample while it lasts! :)

Prosody (launched 2018) Rose Rondeau was my CP yesterday , a nice centred rose, half way between deep and airy. I also retried a couple of Abel scents as I passed by. A crisp morning here. Yesterday I saw three baby rabbits in the cemetery and they were very cute. Today I am in Ys-Uzac Lale which is lovely and almost empty. Happy weekend!

When I opened the front door Friday, there was a rabbit on the porch! I did put some more of my indoor plants outside, but I would think there would be a lot more to eat on the front lawn. I’ve seen rabbits eating the grass near the back door lately, too. They’re hungry critters.

We have tons of rabbits most years, and they have never bothered potted plants. They mostly eat grass, and if we’re not careful, whatever they can find in the veg garden.

Wearing Pont des Arts A Ce Soir. I’m on my second sample of this and am quite taken with it. It feels to me like a very thoughtful reimagining of Ostara, a favorite of mine. A Ce Soir is more complex, with every facet more fully realized and with some allusions to Havane Vanille and perhaps other perfumes I don’t know. I keep smelling new things in it.

Pont des Arts is only about a year or so old but A Ce Soir is very much in the Bertrand Duchaufor tradition. He just gets better and better.

Not doing CP, but I am in niche. Tauer LDDM, from a small decant courtesy of floralgal. I think the first time I tried this I wasn’t too sure. Today it clicked. And my husband LOVED It. He even commented on the subway that he got a generous wafting and was oohing and ahhing. It’s still going strong some six hours or more later.

Wish I could wear it again tomorrow, but I’m at one of those all-day things where they ask you to be scent free…. Having had a good friend who really suffered at large gatherings, I try to honor the requests. Oh well….

Super late today. I was feeling a bit subversive this morning for work, as i went in on my flex day off. So I put on some Bobbi Brown Beach oil after my shower, then added a couple hefty sprays of Heure Exquise. I figured it was on ‘my time’ so why not?? No one said anything so all was well. Project done, and sent off! Woo hoo!

After work went to our friendly pub for drinks and a bite to eat. Sprayed on LOTS of Chanel Paris-Riviera on my way out the door.

This morning before work I located a Le Labo website which had 1/2 oz sprays. So I’ve got an Iris 39 on the way to me.
