Monday scent of the day 8/5

Posted by Robin on 5 August 2019 228 Comments

It's Monday. Lots of people shared good news in yesterday's poll, in case you need some. What fragrance are you wearing?

I went with Estee Lauder Sensuous Nude, which I came across while looking for something else.

Reminder: on 8/9 we'll celebrate National Book Lovers Day...wear a fragrance inspired by an author or a book or a character in a book.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m trying to use up some samples and today I’m wearing Muguet Porcelaine. It feels more like spring but it is nice on a hot summer day as well.

My SOTD doesn’t match the book, but I just finished Call Me By Your Name last night. There was so much deep emotion in that novel, and I had to keep a hanky close by. It was very hard to let go of that book.

My favorite line: “If I could have him like this in my dreams every night of my life, I’d stake my entire life on dreams and be done with the rest.”

If I had to pick a scent to match that book it was be something very soft and elegant, like the authors writing.

My next book is Song of Achilles, I haven’t opened a page yet and I am trying hard not to as I am saving it for our vacation.

Hi! Just read about this book on lifeinacoldclimate.com this weekend. Yours is now the second mention. Maybe I should read this! Saw the movie advertised a year or two ago but eventually didn’t get to see it.

        Dear Amyitis-
I saw the movie when it came out and then read the book, which is not usually how I do things.
The author gave me so much in those pages.. intimacy, fear, guilt, compassion, put in such a poetic way. I highly recommend.
If you do decide to read it maybe you and I can can come up with a scent to match? That would be fun!

I will certainly put it on my list! I am a SLOW reader though (or I should rather say that I read about five books at a time so my “finish rate” is dismal). I think you once mentioned Khaled Hosseini’s And the Mountains Echoed (I remember as I was also reading it at the time) and I STILL haven’t finished it. Have finished books about the new face of London and Russian Oligarchs though! And am almost finished with a book by MFK Fisher – The Gastronomical Me.

I pre-ordered the paperback of Circe months ago, which is due out in January next year. I suspect I will enjoy it much more. To me, Song was a romance, but it was unclear what was the attraction of the god to the man, I personally find personal insecurity as a plot point annoying, the narrator never convinced me to care about either of the lovers, and the ending was of course expected. That said, the author’s prose are lovely. Golly I am negative! Sorry. I know plenty of folks who loved the book–so please take my critique with a grain of salt!

I saw the movie, which was intense- in terms of emotion(there was serious sobbing in the theater at the end) , beauty ( Both with the actors in the film conveying soul and the location in Italy) and purpose.

The movie inspired me to buy Cap Neroli!

AND THEN I READ THE BOOK.

How did such an affecting movie get made, with so much left and/or changed? The book left me a wreck.

Seriously Ede, I had never cried so hard while reading a book. Elio’s emotions were so raw, so real, and presented to the reader as sometimes poetic, sometimes vulgar way. I couldn’t get enough. Have you read the sequel? I haven’t but will one day.

So Cap Neroli would be the scent you would pick for this novel?
        I haven’t smelled it

And yes- I honestly think Cap Neroli would be the perfect scent for this book.

Scentless so far. I wanted to thank the crew on here for your support. My old very loved vet is taking care of my little girl. She said she was feeling a little bit better. Not a lot.

    Thank you again.

And I am blowing money on a perfume, just because, today.
    As I am always indecisive,
    TF White Patchouli
    TF Tobacco Vanilla
I can’t remember, I am exhausted. Just a patchouli perfume. I’ll try any.

My mother used to wear it in the 70s when she went to parties and fancy diners. My father often brought a bottle when he came back from business trips haha. But she always felt it was a little bit ‘too spicy’ for her (a few years ago she gifted me her vintage perfume and 50 ml of the newer edp)
She switched to Poison, and later on in the 90s l’eau d’issey became her signature, but I also think of her when I smell J’adore. :)
Nowadays I think Ineke’s Poets Jasmine is a favourite (i gave it to her haha)

I revisited a sample of Nicolai Patchouli Intense yesterday and it smelled so good, I’m trying to decide whether to thunk the sample today or dig out a different patchouli perfume. I wear patchouli more in the winter and apparently I need to change that. It’s hot and dry here and there are already flecks of yellow in the walnut trees and the maples are getting that bleached look that comes before they start to change color. I love fall but it seems like the leaves just got here!

Scrubbed off L de Lolita Fleur de Corail. Blind bought this at a super discount as I like Si Lolita and have been very lucky lately with buying things blind (John Galliano, TBS Red Musk). Ga. This is really horrible -IMO. I thought that it really couldn’t be that bad, as the perfumer is Maurice Roucel. Lesson learnt.
On another note, thank you for all the considered feedback I got on the divorce question. It really gave me a new perspective.

Is the bottle pretty? I recently blind bought a flanker of Cabotine because I needed to spend 8 dollars for free shipping. I thought the same thing, how bad could it be? Answer is THAT BAD. The bottle is pretty though, and matches my daughter’s room, so it’s officially a knick knack.

I sure do need some good news today. I popped up to the PNW for the weekend to see a friend, which means I have now missed two weekends at home in a row, and next weekend will be my birthday party, so in fact I will not have had a peaceful weekend at home in a month. Sigh. This is how I know I’m getting old. This would not have been an issue five years ago.

Also, I’ve been selling decants on eBay, and someone said my decant was not authentic and wants a refund! Of COURSE it’s authentic! Not only am I annoyed, I feel super indignant over this suggestion of dishonesty. Just the sheer amount of work it would take to make a fake perfume…! Anyway, those of you who have sold lots of stuff on eBay: do I have any recourse? If I need to escalate the issue to them (which I will do!), is there specific language that would help me convey the fact that the buyer is most definitely lying?

You smell lovely – and this is why I stopped selling on eBae. I would source stuff from France, and resell and made a slim margin and there was ALWAYS a bozo who would insist that my items were either fake (how do you fake stoneware? How do you fake deadstock fabric?) and demand a refund? When I would say sure, please return the items at my cost – no items to be had, suddenly gone.

        Too many bozos.

That’s interesting though – if you offered a full refund and they didn’t return it, would that get you off the hook?

Well, I sent the refund but did not get the merchandise back – and add insult to injury then saw that SAME MERCH sold under the person’s NEW ebay profile.

So after a couple of times of that happening, I put “no refunds or exchanges” and actually turned to selling locally. That made it better. BUT it is still hassle to sell on eBae.

        • Koyel says:
          5 August 2019 at 1:24 pm

Ugh. That’s even worse. It seems they’ve made it so that now you don’t issue the refund until the item is returned, so that’s a step up. But yes, it is a hassle and I am thinking I might stop it. I just wanted to fund my perfume addiction! Mope.

Have you contacted the buyer directly to work it out? That’s always what ebay wants people to do first. If the buyer is unreasonable then I would contact ebay very quickly. I’ve been a seller and buyer for over 18 years and have had mostly good transactions. I did have a buyer a couple years ago file a complaint against me (without contacting me directly first!) claiming that her perfume bottle did not arrive. I sent the tracking number directly to ebay showing it HAD arrived, and that was the end of that on my end. They handled it from there.
Of course it’s not fake! But you can’t take it personally, there are scammers around every corner these days. It’s sad.
      Good luck Koyel!

Thanks, mtg. I did contact the buyer immediately after the return request but haven’t heard back yet. The button to escalate hasn’t appeared yet! I hope it does if the buyer insists, but we’ll see. And THANK YOU for reminding me not to take it personally. They don’t know me, so their claim has nothing to do with who I am.

But seriously, I think this is just someone who decided they don’t LIKE the scent and are trying to use this as a way to sample the scent for free. Ughhhh.

If scamming decants is their game, you might be one of many decanters they’ve tried to sample from for “free”. Do they have an eBay profile with buyer feedback? Thankfully there are kind buyers out there, I had a couple who were not so pleasant. I know first-hand your decants are super nice. ? good luck!

Well thank you, flopper <3 I'm sorry to say I already gave the buyer good feedback because they paid promptly. Now I regret it deeply! Maybe others have been conned into leaving good feedback too :( But you're right, I will have to go investigating to see if I can find evidence of this kind of behavior before.

Exactly that! I had a similar situation when I sold an almost brand new perfume I disliked (from a trusted store). The buyer claimed it was off. It wasn’t, but I think he/she disliked it (as did I). People will try to put their own ‘mistakes’ on you…

I was so sure that I was right that I just told them the perfume was fine even though they might not like it. Never heard from buyer again. I don’t have any advice on your current situation Koyel, but I think that maybe you ought to have a “No Refunds” policy on your decants going forward. At least you won’t lose money to a scammer that way.

SOTD = Jacomo Silences Parfum de Toilette

    ✅?

    C. J. Box writes a series where the protagonist is Joe Pickett, a game warden in Wyoming. Joe’s master falconer friend, Nate Romanowski, is the silent but deadly type. Nate reminds me of the bite of galbanum and the name of the perfume; however, I would not scent him with this — he would be commando so as not to reveal his position.

So, as I was typing “galbanum”, spellcheck changed it to galbanumgal. Also, my SOTD analogy was so clever (IMHO) I should have saved it for Friday. ???

I’m wearing Dear Polly, which has quickly become the bracing kind of comfort scent for me, to steel me for a week and a half of our scheduler being on vacation – which makes me, by default, the scheduler. Aieeee.

I’ll pair it with the character Pauline, from In Watermelon Sugar – not so much the character from the book as the character from the Neko Case song that I think is about the book, Margaret vs. Pauline. The way I feel about that song is complicated to try to explain, but it’s kind of about a woman for whom things are easy (Pauline) and a woman for whom things are hard (Margaret), and as someone who’s always envied women for whom things (neatness, relationships, unbitten cuticles) seem easy, I identify with Margaret (also my real name) and the pang of not being a Pauline. Of course I think in truth a lot of people I imagine to be Paulines feel just the same way and are also Margarets. Dear Polly, though, is definitely a Pauline.

I’m in Heeley Blanc Poudre from a new decant. This would match that picture very well. The juice is a pale pink and it’s a soft, powdery scent. I drained a sample of this in two days and immediately wanted more. I scoured the internet for a decant and came upon a great source I wanted to share with you all, in case you haven’t heard of it either. https://www.sites.google.com/site/traceycutlerperfume/
She sells decants at cost, so much like the splits done here. She even included a hand written note and a couple of samples!?
I’m curious, what are your favorite decant sites? I’ve used STC, TPC, ScentSplit, Fragrancesline and perfumesamplesanddecants. Any other good ones I should know about?!

As a matter of fact, I will “blame” NST for sending me down the deep rabbit hole of my perfume obsession–I inquired on here years ago, about some recommendations for other perfumes, since I really “didn’t like perfume very much, but did like Sarah Horowitz Perfect Veil” and it was in the Monday Mail. So many years/perfume bottles later, here we are. MUA also fueled the obsession, and the swapping days were so fun. Glad to see some buddies like SpringPansy and ringthing and therabbitsflower–the perfume community is really so awesome.

I found MyScentsei on Etsy a few years ago, and she has her own site now, myscentsei.com

I haven’t ordered recently (because I need to get my samples and decants organized again to even know what I already have), but I liked her Etsy shop because she had the best prices and widest selection of Roja Dove decants. I found her reliable and good to deal with, and she often has specials.

I’m wearing Iris Ukiyoe for the first time since I just got one of the 4ml minis in a swap. This was one I finally got my nose on at Nordstrom last weekend. I sprayed it on paper and kept enjoying smelling it there so thought I’d better try it on skin. It’s lovely and easy to wear so it’s perfect for the office.

I dropped my car off this morning to get some scheduled work done but had a moment of shock at the cost. When I took notes while on the phone with the shop months back when I was having other work done, I must have been unclear on the fact that both sets of struts, front and rear, should be done together. And that they each cost around $600. Oh, and I’m getting my timing belt replaced…

It’s a very expensive time in my life with two weekend trips this month, the car, and some other things.

Last time my husband took his annoyingly-expensive-to-repair VW to the VW place we joked that it would be $700 because it’s always $700… got the bill back, it was $701. Sigh.

This made me laugh! My husbands car costs a fortune to maintain too. (Mine has cost me almost nothing for the 10 years I’ve had it. He calls it a tin can, but I love my tin can.)

No, I’m going to two cities I’ve already visited. Next weekend is Portland, which is a 3-4 hour drive. I’ve actually only been twice in the 6 years I’ve lived in Seattle. And the weekend of the 24th is Chicago for a friend’s wedding. I’ve been there many times. I’m excited to eat a lot of good food in both places and spend time with friends in Chicago!

I’m wearing LL Ylang Ylang 49 today. It is potent with florals and oak moss, and smells fruity to me. I haven’t made my mind up about it yet. Just looked up reviews, and a lot of people compare it to Aromatics Elixir, which I’ve never tried. Anyone else?

Yesterday I was discussing cold soups with a friend and we talked about gazpacho and then almond soup (Ajo Blanco) and then watermelon gazpacho. I looked it up and found various recipes including one for mango gazpacho! Now that’s something I am dying to make (and eat)!

When you do, send along some of that mango gazpacho this way!

I also find similarities between Ylang 49, and AE, and also Ubar … I remember mentioning this in one of my earliest posts on NST. Ahhhh… so long ago, so many perfumes… It is good to know others have drawn a similar comparison. AE, at least the current formulation, is thinner than either the Le Labo or the Amouage–but it also costs about a third of the price.

In two sprays of Jasmins Marzipane which lasted all day, I wouldn’t mind a big bottle, I have the 20ml (I think) travel spray.
We’re having a great afternoon of breezy sunshine after rain this morning: well, real English weather I suppose.

A delightful occurrence: last week, I commented about plans to visit Brooklyn over the weekend for a Tai Chi event. As hoped, I also seized the opportunity to visit Twisted Lily.

While sniffing, I eavesdropped on an insightful perfumista discussing an unfamiliar brand with the staff. She turned out to be NSTer Elisa P, who deduced from my friend’s Tai Chi tee shirt that I could be nozknoz and introduced herself. Pretty darn cool!

I bought Bruno Fazzolari Au Dela Narcisse and brought back samples of Brooklyn Perfume Oud and Sandalwood. Haven’t spent a lot of time with the BPCs yet, but they seemed to be surprisingly good and wearable interpretations of the real things.

The Tai Chi event was worth the trip, too, even without the visits to Katz’s Deli, Chef Andres’s Mercado Little Spain, historic Brooklyn Heights, and the astonishing Pierre Cardin exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum. Don’t miss that exhibit if you’re in the NYC area!

As nozknoz mentioned, I had the pleasure of meeting a fellow NST perfumista at Twisted Lily over the weekend- unplanned at that!
I went in search of a bday gift for my sister, whose 60th celebration I will be attending in LA in a few weeks.
I’m largely on the fence about buying for other people but she likes perfume and wears JM Lime, Basil… and Stella (which makes her sneeze!).
I ended up getting her Eight & Bob Champs de Provence (a pleasant orange blossom with some herbs and jasmine-thoroughly inoffensive IMO) in the 20ml size, and I bought the TDC de Bachmakov mini 10ml trio. And because I’m selfish, I broke that open and kept 1 for myself (the packaging isn’t anything to show off, frankly)! So my SOTD is de Bachmakov, which is lovely and bright. Also got samples of Shi_so and CdG Calamus.

Was in Delacourte Virgile earlier today as I had to deal with banking stuff. I held my tongue at one bank when they asked why I don’t have any accounts there (closing down trust stuff).

Now I’ve switched to vintage Aliage. Husband and I are planning to eat a picnic dinner since the weather is so pleasant and humidity is low. Hoping to finish a knitted hat so I can turn it in tomorrow, I just haven’t wanted the yarn on me in the heat…

I feel like my perfume choices are getting more and more boring as the years pass. Lately I’ve been wearing nothing but Melagrano, which smells amazing on me and seems just perfect for Berkeley in the summer. My 10 ml decant, which I only got a short while ago, is almost gone.

Spent the day in Amouage Honour Woman, one of my Scentbird decants this month. Liking it a lot but at that $$ not sure it’s FB for me.

Got home to a new box of Olfactif samples. This will be the last one; just canceled it as well as Scentbird cause: too many samples. Keeping Scentbox as they’ll accept returns if I hate the scent.

Well! In this month’s box from Olfactif got Ineke Idyllwild… think this might be the 3rd sample I have of it. But since the FB will be 20% off, already know I’m sucked into buying it, as I already wanted it… oh, the struggle.

Now I’m sampling 4160 Tuesdays Scenthusiasm and I am totally digging the cucumber note. Who knew? I do love gin and cucumber martinis, too! Yeah so that probably means another FB. Good thing I canceled.
