Friday scent of the day 6/14

Posted by Robin on 14 June 2019 229 Comments

Friday, plus Flag Day and World Blood Donor Day. Our community project for today is the picture challenge, edition 4, part 2 (you can find part 1 here). Wear a perfume that matches the picture, which is Georgia O'Keeffe's Blue and Green Music, shown above right. You can find snippets about this painting here and here.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I focused on color and movement, and ended up in Sarah Jessica Parker Covet. The crazy top notes mimic the movement that starts in the lower left hand corner of the painting and the dry down progresses to cover something like the detail in the whole of the lower left hand quadrant, as shown above left.

Reminder: on 6/21, mark the solstice by wearing your favorite fragrance of summer (or winter) 2019.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I understand that the picture is meant to represent music, but it looks a bit like a green and blue stone to me, so I picked Olivier Durbano Jade (the name, the green notes and blue-green juice).

Not participating in the CP, although I really like the painting. I’m wearing Santal Massoia – my dog was spayed yesterday and I’m still anxious about the whole recovery process so I wanted something comforting.

    Happy Friday!

Love your interpretation of the CP, Robin! My thought for this painting was similar – I wanted something that made me think of blue-green, but with movement. (How cool is it that a still painting made us both think “movement”?) This is really hard; at least for me, most cool-smelling perfumes feel more static, somehow? But then I thought of Private Collection, which I think matches both the colors and the energy.

Looking forward to busting out the summer faves next week!

Friday at last! I’m on staycation until next Friday, then I work a three day weekend, then another two weeks off!? Work has been short staffed lately so I have picked up several extra shifts in the last month or so. I think it’s finally starting to catch up with me and I’m looking forward to some down time with my family. Especially since the bigs are both home. I know these days are becoming fewer and far between.

When I looked at Blue and Green, I assumed my mental habits were getting in the way, because it conjured up a garden. Turns out that the Art Institute of Chicago’s info on this work (https://www.artic.edu/artworks/24306/blue-and-green-music) references nature, so perhaps I’m not so far off after all! Of course, it wasn’t a difficult association to make, but I didn’t want to halt at the first thing that popped to mind…

At any rate, quick associations: I’m thinking ivy (and my Goutal Camille is woefully past its prime), perhaps iris (Prada, maybe), Chanel No. 19 – edp or Poudre.

I’m likely to grab my Gap Grass today, because I’m going to be deeply pondering the plantings in front of my suburban house. Let’s face it, the primary suburban feature is grass.

Thanks for this week’s community project! I’ve been wanting to get down to the Art Institute, anyway; now I have a specific goal!

I do think some of the older AG scents are a bit more fragile. My Eau de Camille and Folavril are both turning. My Musc Nomade is still ok, but might be good to use that one up as well.

I also immediately thought of the garden as well, and I agree with you about the primary suburban feature being grass. But don’t forget about the sky – it’s the blue that harmonizes with the green. Nice choice in Gap Grass!

By every bit of logic, I should be wearing Tom Ford Mossy Breaches which matches the green color, the mysteriousness and the aquatic nature of the painting.
Yet the bottle of Isabay’s (sp?) Gardenia insisted it was the true scent for the picture. Odd, since I regard Gardenia as a “purple” scent. I think the intensity of the soliflore seems to match the vibrancy of the painting.

I am probably being too literal, but I put on a few sprays of Lilly Pulitzer Beachy this morning. It’s going to be another scorcher today so this will work well for today.

The colors of the box match to the blues and greens in the painting above. And at the beachvthe ocean water is always moving, so it also reminded me a bit of the painting.

I found this bottle at TJ Maxx on clearance for $7.00; prices on evil bay right now are crazy ridiculous.

i did not have to think long for this weeks cp.
When you just picture some of the notes: Jasmin, lavender, tea, moss… Et voila almost perfect fit.

Indolis oozes warmth though. Its the sandalwood that makes it glow. And while the painting is gorgeous, it is also very cool and somewhat distant imho.

Iris Nazarena for the CP. It’s an atmospheric connection for me, and the ripples in the painting remind me of the ripples in the leather icon on Fragrantica ?
Looking forward to the weekend- I’m participating in a drumming performance in the park tomorrow after only 2 meetups with this group. I’ve been trying to practice from a recording, but yikes! The group is very welcoming and forgiving, though. I think it’ll be fun anyway!

Boy I have really spent some time on this one….a challenging pick. Thank You Robin!! In the meantime I have fallen in love w/some of her works that I have NEVER seen- again, Thank You Robin!
So I feel like the sharper lines delineate the structure of the music or even rhe physical container (speaker, record player piano etc) turned on it’s side for higher volume. The green waves represent wind instruments -maybe flutes, while the interior of the structure says piano voices, wood instruments-violins, and maybe horns. It feels like a classical piece.
I have no perfumes w/me at the beach to reflect this but would choose a copal incense, iris and galbanum.
Now I want to see what you all wrote!

I am so glad you found it worthwhile!

And I had the same feeling about the sharper lines (and that it is a classical piece, or at the very least, something long with sections). That is what makes it hard to do with perfume unless you wear a series over the course of the day — therefore I just did a corner of it.

Wearing Greenwitch since the waves in the corner brought to mind the sea notes in the perfume. On the topic of synesthesia and music, I had a roommate in college who was a voice major. Apparently she had perfect pitch because every note had a different color.

    3) Will be starting up two more garden boxes after work today; the cooler weather will make setting them up pleasant instead of hot and exhausting! I also started more herb seedlings to place in the boxes last night.

I went with Un Jardin en Mediterranee, which to me is blue and green and *warm*. Unseasonably cool here first thing this morning.

This is a special fragrance for me, because it was the one that sent me down the rabbit hole. I had always liked perfume, had gone through a few bottles, but this is the one that made me want to learn about notes and noses. Basically, it’s all Jean-Claude Ellena’s fault.

    SOTD = Chanel No.19 EDP

I went literal with the green. In IG, I posted a picture of my bottle with a mini artwork featuring a lake so that would cover the blue!

In other news — At a public facility, there are standard-sized chairs with arms and 1 (that I saw) that was quite a bit wider, also with arms. If you know you can easily fit in any chair in the room, would you think twice about sitting in the larger chair?

I thought further about accessible public restrooms. In the flight back from Rome to New York, one of the restrooms was accessible (but probably more for larger sized people). I used it because even as an average size person, I barely fit into the standard ones.

      Twins!
That is an interesting question you pose…although I am a thin person, I am all about comfort, so I would probably go for the bigger chair. Especially if it was the only one…the allure of it being unique or special would call to me, but then! if a larger person entered the room and eyed me like I shouldn’t be sitting in the chair they wanted, I would feel all awkward and sheepish, so….who knows.? I would probably just go with the regular size chair.?

I’m matching colors, movement and music in today’s cp with what’s just outside my window: enjoying a welcome break from rainy days, I’m seeing lots of blue sky, green/green/green of everything growing (the one benefit from all the rain), a very breezy day ‘moving’ the tree branches in a dance with the sky, and even though the migrating birds have left us, my resident little brown wrens and bright red cardinals provide all the music I need with their uplifting, cheery songs from dawn to dusk.

My fragrance to harmonize with all this natural beauty? A favorite daily summer scent of mine. YR Naturelle, the lemony citrus of sunshine, green of meadow, and blue of sky, it’s as uplifting as birdsong. Nothing fancy, just a cheerful, pleasant scent with a touch of cedar to anchor it. Even its bottle harmonizes, shading in blues and greens that meld into each other.

Looking forward to the first Friday night concert in the park tonight, with a bbq beforehand to benefit the new outdoor nature center for our park district, continuing the theme of the day!

I hope that something just outside your window brings a bit of hope and cheer to each of you this weekend!

      http://nzbirdsonline.org.nz/species/grey-warbler

For the past few days I have been enjoying the return of the grey warblers to my garden, i can hear them from my kitchen table, they have the lovelist long call that always cuts short, abruptly. Even though it is mid winter they have to start nesting to ensure one batch of chicks because in spring the shining cuckoos arrive from New Guinea and the Solomon islands and they lay their eggs in grey warbler nests, and kick out the warbler chicks. I don’t know how birds manage to work out such complex breeding and nesting arrangements It’s incredible when you think about it.
      Where are you based?

Thank you, I love to hear about others’ bird experiences. I’m in suburban Chicago, Illinois, USA, and I know you’re ‘down under,’ as they say, a place that’s on my bucket list to visit. We have lots of various warblers who visit us during migration but they are gone now. We do have bright yellow goldfinches that stay the summer along with the cardinals, lots of robins that begin their morning song at 4 a.m., a catbird or two, cocky blue jays that love our peanuts, and my dear little cheery wrens, who started visiting and nesting with us just a few years ago. This year we are blessed with two pair nesting at opposite ends of the garden! Love them all!

I have emailed them a couple of different times, BEGGING them to offer their Christmas scents on the US site. Maybe this is the year….. :)

Z sample OTD is Nightingale. I am enjoying the peppery saffron in the top of this one. Will be interested to see if it evolves and stays interesting or if this is all it has to offer. . .

I will pretend it is for the CP, connecting the feminine elements of this fragrance (described as a “pink chypree” in the sample notes) with the more, uh, feminine interpretations of this O’Keefe painting (alongside so many others) . . .

I really like Nightingale and will be curious to hear your thoughts after wearing it all day. I get nostalgic when I smell it because it must remind me of something from childhood.

I think the saffron does lend it a “vintage” vibe. I like it, but I’m not sure it evolves enough to be more than a fun scent to sample. I like how it smells from a distance more than up close, too–when I bring my wrist to my nose, it seems to lose character and become more one-dimensional.

I was out in the forest yesterday, early morning and it was pre-dawn, pitch black and I was just exploring through the tall pines, following the scents, with the dogs, a beam of light from my head torch lighting the way ahead, very shadowy, and for a few minutes I felt almost euphoric . I tried to figure out why and i think it came down to the fact that here I was, totally alone, walking in the dark and I didn’t have a care in the world…it was such a liberating feeling. To walk in the dark, unafraid. What freedom.
Anyway, to get back on topic…Cristalle. There is a clarity and complexity to this scent ( especially in winter) . I think it captures the musicality of colour in O’Keefe’s work.

Wow, how cool is that!? I used to go for walks late at night when I was a teen. It was a quiet, safe neighborhood, and no one else was out. I relished the quiet time alone in my head and, yes, the freedom of it!

Elie Saab L’Eau Couture. Not sure it’s aligned with CP, but it’s the kind of scent that reminds me of walking through a park in the spring and getting wafts of scents from blooming trees but not really knowing where the scent comes from….

I decided to match the picture with Cacharel Eden: the otherworldly aquatic jungle vegetal and aquatic flower say blue and green to me and the painting could be a blow-up of plants.

I really picked up on the green in this, but since it’s not all about the green, I figured I’d go for a green-plus-some-other-stuff perfume, and I’m wearing Ormonde Woman.

Thanks for these art-related CPs, Robin, I really like them!

I thought about this a lot, mainly because I find it intriguing and I’m looking forward to learning more. I tend to approach a lot of art in an entirely visceral way, pretty much like I do perfume. I’ve really enjoyed learning about how others respond (or don’t) to this painting. I had a few things that I thought seemed appropriate, but ultimately I chose to keep it simple and go with what I wanted to wear. When I consider what O’Keeffe was up against in her time, I have to appreciate that I have the freedom to follow what moves me.

Anywho, enough with the high-falutin’ folderol! Sotd is DSH’s Fleuriste. Initially I wanted to wear her Eau Cerise, since I love it and cherries are in season and they’re my favorite. I’ve noticed a fleeting resemblance to fruit in this painting, but more tropical ones like cherimoya. I also saw the Mediterranean landscape, seaweed in the Caribbean, seaweed in an aquarium, faces, desert sands, Tibetan clouds… I could go on! But I just went with what popped into my mind after some consideration, and maybe that’s a big part of art, but as I said, I have a lot to learn!

Btw, Robin… what inspired you to choose this particular painting?

I don’t know…I considered one of the more “new mexico”-ish paintings or one of the flowers, but I liked the idea that she was already exploring aspects of synaesthesia with this painting, and that’s kind of what we’re doing, so it just seemed to fit?

I’ve had such a hard time finding time to post this week! Between work and life stuff it’s just been a week. But I did participate in the CP with Amouage Reflection Woman. It starts off quite green and dewy with a melon note even and has quite a bit of water violet and freesia. I think the florals are in the aquatic, watery side for the blue of the painting. It was one of the first perfumes I thought of when I saw the painting. Will catch up on reading posts tonight after work!

I finally had an “Aha!” moment with the painting yesterday. Something about it reminded me of how camphor smells. So I went rummaging through my bottles, decants, and samples to see if that was indeed the case. Two perfumes presented themselves as options, and I am wearing one of them today.

SOTD = CD Midnight Poison EdP, plus Wrappings Body Smoother lotion on my shins. They work wonderfully together.

Well, I applaud the person who wore Organza today because I had also been struck by the texture of the painting for today’s CP. I tried to think of something textured but failed. So I went with green and wore Zoologist Panda. I think I have the 2nd formulation: juicy green shoots with some floral aspects. It’s supposed to smell like bamboo but I have no idea what that smells like. The Elephant and Dodo would also have been good green options from this line. What might have been best would be the New Zealand Rainforest scent from some recent line, but I can’t remember which and couldn’t find my sample. It was very mossy and ferny.

    SotD = Hiris

because it was fantastic yesterday, I Hiris-ed myself again today. The blue of the bottle reminds me of the blue in today’s painting, so there ya go. :D

Loved reading the comments today. I often mix colors, scents, flavors, sounds, and textures in my mind. One thing leads to another, as people will often say.

Happy Friday, everyone. Thank you for the kind words and congratulations yesterday. Perfume people are the best!
