Tuesday scent of the day 6/11

Posted by Robin on 11 June 2019 242 Comments

Happy Tuesday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing a little dab of Narciso by Narciso Rodriguez (Eau de Parfum, aka White Cube), and drinking a cup of Hong Cha Mao Feng from Upton.

Reminder: on 6/14, we're doing the picture challenge, edition 4, part 2 (you can find part 1 here). Wear a perfume that matches the picture, which is Georgia O'Keeffe's Blue and Green Music. You can find snippets about this painting here and here.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows a Penguin Classics edition of Kazuko Okakura's The Book of Tea, which was apparently one of Georgia O'Keeffe's favorite books.

    Hi everyone!!!

Its been a while. I am back from vacation.

    Vietnam was super awesome!

The food is amazing and i fell in love with Vietnamese iced coffee. People are very friendly and the countryside is beautiful. Traffic is something else though, it seems there are no rules or laws haha…but you get used to it.
Most cities are quite ugly when you just look at the architecture…but the streets are so charming and alive and energetic. And all the tropical flowers and plants smell amazing.

We stayed in Ho Chi Minh City and DaNang. From DaNang we made daytrips to Hue and Hoi An.

The weather was quite hot and extremely humid though, and it was not even hottest or wettest month/season.
Usually I am all about long hikes and exploring cities by foot, but this time I also spent quite some time in air-conditioned shopping malls / food courts, taxis and restaurants hahaha.

We also had a wedding to attend there so we did not really have a choice when it came to picking a period/season.
But if you want to visit Vietnam and are, like me, not a big fan of hot humid weather….maybe try a somewhat cooler season/location.

Anyways, its good to be back. I missed my perfumes and you guys!

In other news: i quit my job, so hunting for a nice new opportunity is now my daily task. :)

        The coffee is so good!!!

I always thought iced coffee was not for me (i blame a bad starbucks experience), but Vietnamese iced coffee with condensed milk, still has that good stong coffee taste. Its because they use a very strong robusta, ive been told.

And an iced drink in very hot weather is a win as well of course

Yes. Probably not everyone drinks it all day, but cafés/coffee houses seem most busy in morning and also evening hours. And some are even crowded at nighttime (some of the cafes are open 24/7 and those are really coffee houses, they dont sell alcoholic beverages).

So yes, they take their coffee really seriously.

In Ho chi minh city everywhere you look, no matter where you are, you can spot a café/coffee joint.

And of course they also serve good hot coffee ….americanos and good cappuccinos and then there are local specialties (with egg yolk or with coconut milk…havent tried it though).

In the bigger coffee houses (especially the chains), you can also find all sorts of tea and ice tea (both the bitter non sweetened version and the very sweet and/or fruity varieties)

I love Vietnamese iced coffee, it’s super strong but so delicious!
Many of the shops in SF have coffee with condensed milk and sweetened condensed milk, it’s nice as a treat but it’s super rich!

You are brave to quit your job, I seem to remember from you earlier comments that it was getting very stressful.

Glad Vietnam was such a success. Interestingly Da Nang gave its name to a lung condition that was first described during the war there.

Yes it was just not happy with my work anymore, and that caused a lot of stress. (Together with some personal/family issues). My employer was very understanding and cooperative. They already knew I was not planning on staying there forever. ;) So we solved it in a good way and now I can spend all my time and energy looking for something new!
I am feeling so much better now.

I did not know about the Danang lung. Interesting!

well, I have to admit, it was not the most relaxed vacation ever.

I loooove Vietnamese food but my stomach does not fully agree with it. Luckily nothing nasty happened, just minor discomfort. Probably because of a certain herb or spice they use a lot.
Because when we ate Korean and Japanese food there, my stomach issues were suddenly gone.

And then there are mosquitos and they can carry dengue. Dont read too much about that..its really scary argh.
So you have to apply repellant everyday. Sigh…. and i am such a wuss, so first days there i kept my eye on anything small flying nearby hahaha.

And sometimes the heat (smog in the city) and air-conditioning gave me headaches or made my throat hurt.
So no…. it was not always a smooth ride and I kinda get why some people avoid it.

Still…. i think the discomfort was all worth it. :)

I was able to go to Laos and Cambodia in the early 70’s and again in 2002. Angkor is one of the places in my heart – my avatar name is in the Khmer language. AND the coffee in Laos is as wonderful as in Vietnam.

Oh thank you! I certainly will! I have always been intrigued by Khmer culture and Angkor Empire. The connections to India with the script, the cities, the art. It is as fairytale like to me as Timbuktu and Celtic Kingdoms.

Yes, the connection to Lanka City as told in the carvings of the sea of churning milk is amazing. it has always been mystical, magical to me also. There are certain city names that just let your imagination go big and wide.

Welcome back, and good luck on the job search! :)

I had seen a blogger who lived in Manhattan say that she was unable to cross a street by herself in Vietnamese cities. The traffic there seemed to be a shock to her system.

Sometime I would like to try the food. I’ll go by various restaurants with Asian cuisines, including a Vietnamese restaurant, when I go on errands or to appointments in the afternoon, but they open at 6:00 p.m. for dinner, and I’m out and about in the area around 2:00 or 3:00 p.m. The timing doesn’t work. Someday I’ll get to the restaurants I have in mind at the proper lunch or dinner time.

I felt like that Manhattan blogger on my first day. Haha.

The trick is to walk steadily and slowly, so the traffic can anticipate and swirl around you. And it works! Even taxis slow down for you or change lanes.
After a few times you get the hang of it.

Just dont cross when you see a bus or big van/truck coming your way. Its so very crowded on the streets, if they have to choose between avoiding you but also hitting dozens and dozens of scooters OR hitting you and saving dozens of scooters…. I think we all can guess what choice they will make.

Vietnamese food is great, I hope you get to try it soon :)

      Hi Austenfan!
I have been meaning to tell you how grateful I am for your tip to visit the Astier de Villate shop on rue de Tournon on my last trip to Paris a couple of weeks ago.
I went in hoping to smell and buy Sous les Magnolias only to find it was completely sold out (they had a tester hidden in a drawer; I asked to smell it anyway but was not crazy about it, which was just as well). I then decided to smell the other three Pierre Bourdon perfumes and fell in love with La Fin d’un Ete. Did not buy it on the spot, as I always try not to get carried away and be a wise perfumista. But I gave myself a few good sprays and I could not stop sniffing my arm for the rest of the evening. I bought it the next day and I have been wearing it almost daily (and nightly). I simply adore it. I only wish it lasted longer. I currently have no back up bottles of anything but if it’s still available next time I’m in Paris, this will be my first one.
      So there. Thank you! ?

I’m so glad it worked out for you and how kind of you to report back! Angela complained of the lasting power of the Bourdons in her review but I have no problems at all.
        https://nstperfume.com/2017/08/28/pierre-bourdon-sous-les-magnolias-and-la-fin-dun-ete-fragrance-review/
It was actually this review plus Grain de Muscs comments about the Bourdons that put me onto them in the first place. My favourites were La Fin and Magnolias with a slight preference for the latter. I also really liked the shop and I love the Astier de Villatte colognes.

I agree, it was such a nice shop all around! I did not try their colognes. Next time.

Hope there’s no unwanted wardrobe drama for you today! I’m sure you look fabulous!

I wear a lot of vintage-inspired clothes (think 60’s before the women’s movement), including fit and flare-style wrap dresses! One time, however, I was in a favorite dress that was a true wrap–seam opening all the way up to my navel, and I was walking across the library parking lot. BIG burst of wind blew it clean open in front of an old guy nearby. . . I was VERY grateful that I was wearing an appropriate “knickers” style slip that day!!! He got a good view of some lace and satin, and my modesty remained in tact. ☺️

I went with Mirus The Elysian Fields today. This is a gorgeous fougere, heavy on the lavender with hints of hyacinth and oakmoss. It’s like sitting in dappled sunlight near a babbling brook. It’s very likely going to be a full size purchase for me once I thunk the sample.

LADDM, because the cobalt mini reminds me of the blue in the painting, and O’Keeffe spent much of her time in the desert of New Mexico, right? I had no idea she went to high school right in my neighborhood. Huh. Small world.
I am currently in search of “the” perfect white T-shirt. Thoughts? I’m eyeing The Tee from rag&bone. I love the look of that railroad stitching, but is it really worth $90? Yikes.

Have it in black, it’s a good tee. Don’t pay full price–either sign up for Rag & Bone emails (they periodically offer 25% off) or check Bloomingdale’s site…it seems every other week they have a friends & family discount.
Another really good tee is ATM Anthony Melillo, but would never pay full price. They are quite discounted postseason at places like Net a Porter and Shopbop.

Meant to chime in earlier but got distracted with work. Check out Jungmaven for really good cotton/hemp t shirts. They’re reasonably priced at $38-$48 for most. I have around 8 of them in various colors, mostly crew neck with some v-neck. I like the weight of the Lorel a lot, which is mid weight, but they have lots of options for thin or heavier fabric.

SOTD = Geisha Botan by Aroma M. Came in my Olfactif monthly sample box. Notes are “peony, rose, sandalwood, vanilla, velvet woods, forest lichen, oakmoss, musk”. I’m getting the vanilla, but it’s not overly sweet. Really like this. Reminds me of Vanille Insensee in the way the vanilla comes off (not particularly sweet or gourmand), but more floral.

I started my day with some fun new body products from a store called Rituals (which I encountered for the first time Sunday): shower gel, body scrub, body cream, hand lotion and some hair/body mist in a variety of scents, including orange/woods, rose/almond, eucalyptus/rosemary. The scents all have fancier names I can’t bother to remember.

My shower routine has been really boring for years (think: Trader Joe’s cheapies but goodies), but now that I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole, I have a whole new world to explore.

I got a subscription as a Christmas present this year, and I’m enjoying it. At first I thought Geisha Botan was just about vanilla, which disappointed me, but I’ve enjoyed it both times I’ve worn it since. There is a little bit of interest added by the “forest lichen” and oak moss.

I will try again! I love it on paper, but it was much more one-note on my skin, and not different enough from Vanille Insensee to be an insta-buy.

Am debating an FB of May’s Hothouse Flower before the price goes up again.

Have you ended up buying any bottles based on the monthly samples?

SOTD for me is Eiderantler by January Scent Project.
I smelled this at Twisted Lily and immediately ordered a decant. Love it! Gorgeous lavender.. not too masculine, good longevity but close to the skin. I think the hay and elemi add a sweetness that really works. Even got a *positive* comment from my husband this morning: “you smell nice…kind of like jasmine” :)
No jasmine in the scent at all but, I’ll take the “you smell nice”!

SOTD = Guerlain Habit Rouge Dress Code

I have the 2015 version. I have not smelled the original or the later versions so don’t know how they compare. Mine is sweet and spicy and crunchy rose with a subtle hint of a combination of vanilla and tonka beans. I used 4 sprays today but methinks I can gon3 more and not had me out. Very nice! Nothing to do with the CP but I have a few days to think about it – I love the color combination of the painting!

All the talk of Parfum d’Empire from the past few days inspired me to wear Corsica Furiosa today. Thanks Holly for sharing your update from the company.

Yesterday there was a minor (~4.0 magnitude) earthquake in the Cleveland area and I felt it! I was at work when it happened and I could hear the walls in my office settling and felt my desk jerk. So bizarre. I’ve lived in the Great Lakes region my whole life and have never experienced an earthquake before. Any other Northeast Ohioans here who felt it??

I like it a lot. I’m terrible at describing fragrances, and I’m just dabbing from a sample, too — but I find it warm/spicy/dusty with saffron, which I love; just a hint bitter from marigold; and a little creamy with tonka. It’s not heavily rose/oud-y, either; the others in the Calligraphy line seem to play up those notes.

I had washed my arms off before bed, and then I think I tried Ombre Rose at bedtime. I conked out about a minute later, or I might have tried to wash that off before I went to sleep. “I should get up…Zzzz.”

lol, yeah. Once I washed off my arms after lunch, Mom deemed it all faded enough for her to be able to ride in the car with me.

Right now, after a shower, just moisturizing lotion on my hands. Brand called “The Naked Bee,” variety Coconut and Honey. I don’t get much of a scent from it. Just as well.

I’ve been carefully opening the sample vials I offered up, taking a sniff, going, “Whoa, strong!” and putting the caps back on quickly. Then I’m packing them up without regrets, and the thought that I’m saving Dad perhaps 20-30% of his coughing fits, and Mom some undetermined amount of exasperation. lol

King of Prussia is about half an hour away from me in light traffic. I know how to get there. My fear is forgetting where I parked.

I live pretty near Exton, PA, which now has an Ulta and a Sephora in their batch of strip malls, plus the Target with the display of Pacifica fragrances a couple of miles up the road.

I’m sure Philadelphia has much more to offer than Exton in the way of perfumes. I don’t drive in Philadelphia, but I’ll take the train there. We can discuss. :)

It’s beautiful out today low seventies and sun. I always feel bad when I don’t go to work, but I’ve finally learned to listen to my body, because my head is most of the time wrong, lol.

    1) SOTD is Molinard Jasmine after a workout shower in Floris Orange Blossom. Did Pilates super early today due to the heat!

    2) Cold Brew coffee over ice + yogurt fruit bowl.

    3) I hope my tender herbs are okay. I gave them a deep drink but YIKES.

I love jasmine perfumes in the heat! They just hum along so beautifully. You smell great!

You could maybe give your herbs a few ice cubes to help them beat the heat?

Thank you! I really like the scent of jasmine & orange blossom in the heat.

Ice cubes may be a bit of shock for the plants- but I am thinking I should add more mulch to aid with water loss.

I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to wear earlier this morning, but then remembered AbdesSalaam’s Miele which is described on the website as “Miele is made from beeswax absolute extracted with alcohol from old waxes that have been used by bees for more than five years to store honey.” I find it stunningly beautiful, very bright and clear, and not densely waxy nor too rich/cloying. Then the search for my little decant began, but in the meantime I bumped into April Aromatics Nectar of Love which I dabbed on, thinking maybe I’d be lazy and accept that it’s honey-colored and “Nectar.” It’s quite beautiful, a warm sort of exotic bwf melange, but I wasn’t feeling it. Then I found my Miele, hurray! So that’s on the other arm. All this fiddling about finding dinky samples and decants irks me no end. Just sayin’.

Years ago, someone mentioned that her collection of samples and decants was “resting” in a drawer, and I loved that image! I then imagined my own perceived chaotic collection of samples and decants to be calmly drifting in The Sample Sea, and some would drift ashore and I would notice them as the tides brought them in, and others would remain further out beyond my reach and subject to the tides or my concerted efforts to fish for them if I was truly inspired to do so. I seem to believe that I don’t actually aspire to owning more, but the reality is that I really enjoy smelling everything and that adds up to a big load. It’s very rare that I want to own a bottle, or even a large decant, but I do love smelling all the stuff. Sometimes I can relax about it, and at other times it feels totally nuts and The Sample Sea rises up in my consciousness as a tsunami of immense proportions that threaten to obliterate every concept I have of the life I imagined for myself.

I’m sooo tired today. I went to sleep late as it was, and then was woken up at like 3:45 by strange shrieking out back only to find a family of raccoons (mom and 2 kids) climbing over the fence into our yard. Those babies really can scream! They were cute, though ?
I’m in Jour d’Hermes Absolu today which I really love, but it becomes close to the skin so quickly that I can’t smell it much around me.

I have this weird thing where I don’t like that obliterating air conditioner hum that units produce, and central air is an anomaly where I live so I just have those loud boxes that I never use. I kinda like hearing the animals, and I think that it might be a good thing for my cats to comprehend what they’re up against when they go outside which they have always done and still seem to need to do.

I’m continuing my Ormond Jayne theme in Orris Noir. While I very much like Orris Noir, my choice is very much driven by accessibility. We’re on the last stages of painting and all our furniture and possessions are piled up in the smallest areas possible. We ate dinner standing up last night – the only other option was sitting on the bed :)

It’s a gorgeous late spring/early summer day here. A little sketchy looking in the morning, but things cleared out quite nicely. I bet the guys who were cleaning out my dryer vent appreciated that it wasn’t raining. ???

Hot, hot, hot weather here today – 100F (38C), that is. Sprayed a tiny bit of Aliage on in the morning, so lightly that it was almost gone within a couple of hours (unusually, as this scent typically has great longevity on me). Went to the cupboard to re-apply, when for some reason I remembered a little sample of Parfum d’Empire Azamour Les Orangers. Now, I disliked this when I first tried it some years ago and hadn’t really sniffed it since, but in this heat – perfect! It came into its own, so to speak, and now I know when to wear it: in intense dry heat.
