Friday scent of the day 6/7

Posted by Robin on 7 June 2019 262 Comments

PSA: the freebiemeet is tomorrow!

Meanwhile, it's finally Friday and it's finally Chocolate Ice Cream Day. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance by Ineke, Imaginary Authors, il Profumo or i Profumi di Firenze, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter I, and triple bonus points if you wear a qualifying fragrance while eating chocolate ice cream.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in Imaginary Authors Mosaic. I rarely hear it mentioned here, and I suspect we are a small fan club.

Reminder: on 6/14, we're doing the picture challenge, edition 4, part 2 (you can find part 1 here). Wear a perfume that matches the picture, which is Georgia O'Keeffe's Blue and Green Music. You can find snippets about this painting here and here.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Partial credit for wearing….drumroll please…..Ivanka Trump! Very nice, office appropriate scent, with decent longevity and light sillage.

I was in Florence a few years ago and of course went to the I Profumi di Firenze shop not far from the Uffizi. I bought six bottles, one of which I’m wearing today, Spezie de’ Medici, which some people think of as Christmassy because it smells of oranges and spice, but it works well in warmer weather too because the sharpness of the orange peel lasts for an astoundingly long time and carves through the soft spices and vanilla. It’s so great.

I also really love that scent, but, sadly, I am allergic to it. I break out in a major red rash wherever it touches my skin. I’d give a lot to find a clone or twin of it that I could wear!

I toyed with the idea of wearing Mosaic, but it would be my first wearing and I wasn’t brave enough this morning for an Imaginary Authors blind wearing. The Ineke and i Profumi scents I’ve sampled haven’t worked well for me (although Field Notes from Paris is a very near miss), so I ended up re-doing last week’s CP in Or du Serail … mostly because I just craved it this morning. Mr. G approved heartily when I hugged him just now, and even asked what it’s called (that’s not a complete rarity, but fairly it’s unusual).

Imaginary Authors Slow Explosions today. It reminds me of Parfums d’Empire Wazamba with a stronger apple note; although incense isn’t listed in the notes I definitely smell it along with saffron and leather. One of those perfumes that I really enjoy and don’t wear often enough.
Meeting a friend for ice cream this afternoon, guess I’ll have to have chocolate! :) happy Friday everyone.

I’m off project today in Arielle Shoshana Saturday. I was going to wear Falling into the Sea from my samples, because that is the only scent meeting the CP that I have, but I couldn’t get the cap off. I have been having trouble with my grip since I dislocated my dominant index finger at the end of March. It healed wrong. My orthopedist said that it is “frozen”. It won’t straighten, and it won’t bend past a 90 degree angle.

I wanted to wear Inoui, but I can’t find it right now so I’m commando.

holyneroli and others who expressed interest in what’s going on with Parfum d’Empire, I wrote them yesterday to see if they have Corsica Furiosa in stock, and here’s the reply I received this morning:

    “Dear Holly,

Thank you for your interest for Parfum d’Empire and our creations. We have indeed a lot of sold out references at the moment in the US but even in France, which we deeply apologize for. These stocks problems are due to a delay from different suppliers but we are now doing the last settings for the restock. The picking is scheduled to the end of August/beginning of September. With the transportation delay for the US, it might get one week or two additionnal.

Concerning Corsica Furiosa, we do not have a bottle left, even at our laboratory. I hope it won’t be a problem for you and your friend. Do you want me to come back to you when it will be available ?

I remain at your disposal for any further informations and I wish you a nice end of the week.

    Best regards,

    Alexis”

I am getting double points in Ineke Idyllwild… it is great AND I don’t need a bottle, which is maybe my favorite sampling outcome?

I had a marvelous dream last night that an old friend took me to a party at his rich aunt’s mansion; she turned out to be a serious perfume collector and we spent the night touring the various vintage displays she had set up all around her house.

Chocolate Ice Cream Day? I am all in! Coffee flavored ice cream is actually my favorite, but beggars can’t be choosers right?
SotD is Isabey Lys Noir from a sample. This isn’t my usual genre of preferred fragrances, but I think this one will really bloom in the heat today. Like many other parts of the country, we bypassed spring and went straight into summer. 83 and sun today.?

I am in London for work and managed to do some sniffing. Checked out my namesake perfume at Pegnahalion’s (sp?) and found it too sweet and heavy for summer. Then went to Bloom perfumery and got two PG samples: Cadjmere and Neroli Astara. The sales associate were so lovely and laidback. Then nipped into TKmaxx next door because UK Nsters always seem to find good perfumes there and came out with a bottle of Heliotrope Blanc. Easy powder scent.

So all in all a good perfume trip and I still haven’t done the Heathrow duty free!

One of things I love about New York is the abundance of people from everywhere . The girls in front of me are chatting in Portuguese and the guy to my right is speaking Hebrew I am guessing. Hehe. When I had the opportunity to work with hyrax as a raw material, which involved using a hammer to smash up the stones into smaller pieces to release the odor and then be tinctured, I likened it to smelling the elephant house at the zoo. But the best smelling elephant house you can imagine.

The thing is, I *like* the fecal whiff I get from some vintage fragrances (old Shalimar being a standout example), but this was just too much! It wasn’t a whiff of poop, it was like I’d just walked into a barn that needed to be mucked.

Sounds like the scent is true to source material, in any case, so Good For Them. ⭐️ Gold star for effort. ?

LOL. I’m a middle school teacher, so I wear my inner middle schooler on the outside fairly often. ?

Since it seemed to be a popular choice, I tried Moth next. I didn’t like the top notes, but when it settled down to honey, that was nice. Thankfully, I already have a few scents that settle into honey, so I think I likely do not need a bottle of it, either.

Yes, Hyrax was an immediate scrubber for me–I didn’t even wait the full 5 minutes. Am I weird that I absolutely love the smell of T-Rex, including the blast of smoke at the start? I guess I don’t really get much of the rotting meat note, thank goodness. Now, for anyone curious about the latest Zoologist offerings, I ordered samples of Chameleon and Dodo from Luckyscent. Dodo was sort of interesting, very green and ferny; I’d compare it most with their Elephant. But I love Chameleon! I went online and bought one of the small travel bottles immediately and have been wearing it a lot. Lots of ylang ylang with some coconut and banana, but citrus to keep it from being too sweet. It’s reminiscent of Bat but without the damp cave note.

    SOTD = Indult Tihota

Indult has a very small collection and Inwoukd consider it little i.

I had occasion to request medical records in my mom’s behalf and had to leave a voicemail. The greeting was very offputting, bwith the main points being:
    1) we’re very busy so we will TRY to get back to you within 48 business hours. What the —? No, not 2 business days but 48 business hours. Assuming they are open 12 hours a day, that’s 4 business days…and no, they are not open 12 hours a day…more like 8 hours tops which means Ithey are still within their SLA if I get a call back in 8 days later (counting the weekend).
    2) We’re very busy. Don’t bother leaving a message if you are asking for status because we will not call you back.

Oy vey! I hope this is not standard!

Commando today for going to a minor league baseball game (Reading “Fightin’ Phils” Double A team). Last time Mom and Dad and I went, I had Gardener’s hand cream on from Crabtree & Evelyn. Mom said she could smell it in the car, so I wiped it off and tried Pear and Pink Freesia(?). I thought perhaps they’d like that better. Big nope. At that point we were sitting in the parked car at the stadium before the gates opened. “Get out of the car,” Dad said. I didn’t think he was serious, but after he repeated it a few times, I figured he was. So no perfume for today’s trip. I don’t want to get kicked out of the car somewhere over an hour from home. I always seem to learn the hard way, but I do learn. :)

Oh, I liked the hand cream. My hands were very dry at the time. Mom had been all right with the scent when we were out in the open, but in a car it was too much for her. When I tried it in the store, she had thought it was the least offensive of the lot, and the sales assistant had said it was good for dry, rough hands. But Mom objects to any sort of fragrance in a car.

Thank you. :) It was fun. I managed to have a very small celebration of chocolate ice cream day before the game, after a pulled pork sandwich for dinner. Later I pretended it was funnel cake day, too.

The Fightin’ Phils won the game, and there was a fireworks display afterward. The night’s theme was a celebration of Latino culture, so there were various announcements in both Spanish and English, and and many of the staff people were wearing luchador masks. I texted to my brother that even the Crazy Hot Dog Man was wearing a luchador mask for the occasion. He asked why the Hot Dog Man was crazy. “It’s what they call him,” I replied.

I continued a live text with my brother to report on events between innings. “There was an exciting twist in the Vegetable Race,” I texted. He’d seen people dressed in vegetable costumes running races, so he could understand that concept. “The Evil Candy Man was tackled by a luchador before he could trip up a vegetable.” That wasn’t a sentence I could have anticipated typing. lol

        Have a good weekend!

Minor league games can be fun, especially if you go with a group of friendly people and can get in some socializing, too. :) See above for some of the highlights of the “Fightin’ Phils” celebration of Latino culture night. Several team members are Hispanic, and the crowd appreciated the nods to Spanish speakers and Latin America.

You did not ask for recommendations of fragrance free hand cream but I will share anyway:
      – YuBe Advanced Formula Pure Hydration Cream with Chamomile Extract – the packaging is green and white. Don’t get the original formula (in white and orange packaging); available online directly from the company – there’s always some great deal going on so do not buy at list price
      – Dionis Goat Milk Hand Cream Unscented (available at Ulta)

    1) Am in Prada Oeillet, so no points. I used to have Ineke Briar Rose and I used it to the last darn drop. I loved that jammy rose. I think that Black Jade and Amelie Mae has taken it’s place.

    2) It’s a cool and stormy day here- but I will make vegan chocolate rum ice cream when I get home. Here’s teh secret that I discovered while making vegan ice cream – IT’S ACTUALLY A SORBET. If you treat it like a sorbet (even with addition of coconut cream and veggie oil) it comes out a winner.

I am not vegan, but I am lactose intolerant, so I make my own dairy free frozen treats from time to time. My best-textured ones come from adding a bit of xantham gum, which seems to keep the liquid from making big, crunchy crystals, even when it’s fairly low fat. Of course, coconut milk makes lovely frozen treats, too, but I try to avoid making that a regular indulgence.

Hmm. Going out to Sauvie Island for another flat of berries today. Maybe I need to make some strawberry sorbet?

        1) Yes! I do use xanthan gum, and I make vegan ice cream for the same purpose (ease of digestibility). Basically my recipe:
1 cup soy or cashew milk
1 cup coconut milk full fat
        blend together. set aside.
In a pot, make a syrup:
        1/4 cup water
        1 1/2 cup sugar
Stir until well blended and just starting to bubble, then add
        1 tsp xanthan gum
        2 tablespoons cocoa butter
        2 tablespoons coconut oil
        2 tablespoons cold coffee
        2/3 cup cocoa powder
1-2 tsp vanilla extract or vanilla bean
        1/2 tsp salt
This should look like a rich, dark syrup.

Then combine the milks and syrup together. Use a blender is you wish. Let it cool in the fridge, then churn in the ice cream maker.

          ARGH! I forgot the rum

          Never forget the rum

Add a 1/4 cup of rum to the chocolate syrup base once cooled; then mix everything together and cool in fridge. Then churn.

          Absolutely!

Make your fruit sorbets with a bit of good white vermouth, or Luxardo kirsch just a touch to keep it low fi. I’m serious. All the sorbets you have before were worthless before this tip. WORTHLESS.

I recently discovered tuna confit and all the pan bagnats I have had before are worthless. WORTHLESS.

My late step-mother was a baker, and she would sneak a bit of rum into all sorts of goodies. She liked it better than vanilla to round out and “sweeten” a flavor.

Same received wisdom from my grandmother; she thought chocolate desserts especially needed just a touch of rum.

A good dark rum is an excellent flavor in rich pound cakes and cookie fillings; chocolate ESPECIALLY benefits from rum in baked goods AND in hot cocoa make from cocoa pellets from Mexico.

No points again for me since I am once again in DSH Chinchilla. Smelling fabulous over here!

On a tea note, I found a little tea shop here and had a nice visit with the SA. Since I am by no means a tea aficionado, she very kindly made some recommendations. I came away with several 2oz sizes of herbal and roiboos teas (I want caffeine free), one of which is named “Twilight on Timber.” The name alone deserves a prize of some sort. I’ve sampled two so far, Gold Moutain is fabulous, if you like Spicey teas. Looking forward to trying them all.

The weekend is almost here! You all are smelling appropriately celebratory✌?

It’s partial credit for Illuminum Saffron Amber, a very ylang-ylang forward, floral amber and probably my favorite from the 3 Illuminum I own. The banana of ylang mixes well with a peach note and it is very wearable today (although more of a winter scent) as it is cool and has been raining most of the day – but the evening sun is flooding the living room.

    Happy Friday everybody.

SOTD is Ineke Field Notes from Paris from a sample I’ve not tried before. Fragrantica says it’s meant to ‘capture the romantic, nostalgic feeling of sitting in a cafe and writing in a journal while lingering for hours over a cafe creme ‘ (that fragranice would be L’Or de Torrente for me). While I realize everyone’s response is different, none of the notes in this scent bring that image to mind for me. I can smell the citrus and coriander but am very disappointed that there’s not even a hint of my beloved nicotiana (tobacco blossom/flower) which is supposedly a heart note. Instead I get just a bit of sweet hay, which I don’t associate with Paris and can’t recall ever smelling when I visited there. I’m indifferent to it and will switch to something else later.

I will celebrate the day with Aldi’s Super Premium chocolate ice cream, which I think is the best ice cream in the whole world, although the vanilla is my very favorite!

    Happy weekend everyone!

Really, this ice cream is the best. It only comes in vanilla and.chocolate. Usually I just buy the vanilla -it’s delicious plain or with fruit or syrup or whatever. I rarely buy any other brands or flavored ice creams anymore, my whole family is just stuck on this. Even my 11-year old grandson prefers this and asks for it whenever he comes over.

Robin, the mosaic in today’s picture is beautiful! Love it!

I did have a lone sample from a perfumer/house that started with “I” for today, but when I sniffed it this morning, my response was “Not happening today.” So I went backward in the alphabet, and am playing catch up with the letter that I missed.

CP for spending the day in Ineke Idyllwild, but now that I’m home I’ve topped up with Molinard Cuir.

I accidentally bought 2 bottles of this. I would only confess that here, ‘cause seriously, if I’m accidentally double buying, that’s, err, maybe a problem. ? But there are worse problems to have.

Like it quit a bit (and cheap and can’t be bothered to return) so I’ll keep it as a BUB.

Don’t think I’ve seen any Molinard mentions around here, but if anyone has any recommendations let me know!

Several of us wear Habanita in winter especially, it’s a powdery perfume, there is also Nirmala, the ancester of Angel, I haven’t followed the single notes ones: Vanille, Patchouli, Cuir… etc. Is Cuir a light leather?

I forgot about Habanita, I’ve been wanting to put it on my “to sample” list. Such an interesting history!

Yes, Cuir is a light and somewhat floral/sweet leather. Very unisex to my nose.

I’ve since gotten a discovery set of the single note Molinards (purple bottles), but haven’t really put them to the test yet. Will report when I do…
