Wednesday scent of the day 4/3

Posted by Robin on 3 April 2019 201 Comments

Hump Day and Chocolate Mousse Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

We're expecting slightly warmer weather today. I'm in Carven L'Eau de Toilette by accident (I thought I was putting on the Eau de Parfum.)

Reminder: on 4/5, wear a fragrance by Gallivant, Grès, Ginestet, Grossmith or Grandiflora, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter G.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m in Memo Italian Leather today. My little travel spray is dwindling more quickly than I expected.

I’m wearing Grandiflora Boronia by Duchaufour. It’s an interesting scent, not my favourite of the line, but very much worth a try.

Tea is DF Earl Grey Yin Zhen.

Hi Austenfan, I’m really intrigued by Grandiflora and contemplating getting my hands on some samples. I’d be interested to hear which one is your favourite and any others that are worth trying?

I have only briefly sniffed the 2 magnolias, so can’t really comment as to those, but reviews about them have been lukewarm.
I love the Jasmin and Queen of the Night. Can’t quite decide between those two.
If I would order samples again I would probably get one of the 2 magnolias, Boronia, Jasmin and Queen of the Night.

Currently, drinking a cup of Earl Grey tea.

I enjoyed it. I particularly liked Nico Parker in this. She played one of the kids who discovers Dumbo can fly. I kept looking at her, and saying to myself that she looked very familiar. I got my answer later when I found out that she is Thandie Newton’s daughter. She looks just like her beautiful mother.

I also liked that this movie addressed animal issues.

Of course, being a Disney movie, it has a happy ending.

Breakfast = oatmeal with bananas, raisins and shredded carrots, protein powder, cinnamon, nutmeg and some ginger too

Wearing an assortment of Kilian: Liaisons Dangereuses, Straight to Heaven and Rose Oud. These are all so lush!

I have what I call “The Nuclear Option” for getting rid of an earworm, but it might be even worse! A while back someone told me that the best way to get rid of one was to sing the “Barney” theme. Very scary, but effective.

    Good morning Y’all!

SOTD: Lanvin Eclat d’Arpege. Perfect for daytime, warm weather, and the office….a light, fruity sweet floral.

Today is my Friday! Heading to Jacksonville Beach (my in-laws retired there) for a long weekend/Spring break. It will probably be too cold for much else than a walk on the beach, but just going to the beach is always a good idea! :)

Tam Dao, from the split meet. Lovely! I’m drinking some fancy Chinese green tea that someone must have brought back from a conference (forgot my MF Earl Grey at home).
Robin, thanks for the tea recs yesterday! I used to order from Upton quite a bit but I’m learning that years of Barry’s Tea with milk have made my tea palate pretty – er – dull, so it’s either Barry’s or some heavily perfumed Earl Grey type tea for me. I really like the Numi Tea Bags, too, but the MF is just more fun for mornings in the office.

Aha, you want some fun :-)

You might also look at a Kusmi “coffret” of tea bags so you can try some of the flavors — don’t buy a big tin of something until you try them and find out if you like their style.

Next time Williams & Sonoma has a coupon or discount, you could also try some of the Fortnum & Mason teas there…I love the Countess Grey and the Smoky Earl Grey.

Ninas Paris is another French brand with lots of flavors, and you can sometimes find them reasonably priced, or at least, reasonably priced in comparison to what they sometimes charge here for MF.

I just dropped off all my swapmeet packages at the reception area downstairs in my building at work. “WHAT are you UP to?” the very nice (young female) receptionist asked me. I blushed and told her about my perfume addiction and the swapmeet, and instead of staring at me like I’m a nutso, we had a nice conversation about an Escada watermelon scent and how swaps made total sense to her :) Look at that; perfume brings people closer every day.

That is a nice story! People react very differently I find when they realise that you have this “habit”. I remember that one particularly nice SA deduced that I would probably be wearing a different scent everyday, and another made me try all the different iterations of Mon Guerlain explaining in great detail in what way they differed from each other.

SOTD Gris Clair from a swap. It matches my lavender sweater which I seem to have forgotten it needs a thin layer since it’s a little scratchy ?
COTM was the new-to-me Heart (Portlandia-based) Stereo blend with notes of plum, molasses, and vanilla. It’s good, mellow, but the roast was a bit lighter than I prefer.

Grandiflora Boronia, which I initially dismissed but has grown on me. I’ve never smelled real boronia so can’t say how realistic it is or isn’t, but I think I recall Kanuka saying it isn’t. Oh well, it seems like a good office perfume as long as I don’t overspray.

My current bummer is that I had to take my car to a shop near work last night because it was driving funky. It didn’t want to accelerate on an incline and when I pulled over, it made a little shudder before I turned it off. Luckily it was driving mostly normal when I started it back up and drove 5 min to the shop. I took an Uber home and got motion sickness for the first time in a long time. I had to lay down for about 30 min when I got home.

Anyway, my coworker was able to pick me up this morning so that helped me out a lot. I should hear back about my car today, so let’s hope it’s nothing too costly. Good thing I submitted my tax return on Sunday and have a little extra money coming in soon.

Oh no, I hope it’s nothing too serious with your car. I usually don’t get car sick but there were a few Uber rides in NY that made me queasy for sure.

Well, it was nothing *too* serious with the car but a bunch of “small” things needing fixing it replaced. Total came in at just under $1900. That does include all new tires and an alignment, which I knew I needed soon.

I think it is just a bit ‘thin’ in terms of the boronia. It lacks the jammy aspect of the flower but then it shoukdn’t have to be photo realistic and I think that when I know a plant I get disappointed when the perfume doesn’t draw out the aspect I most love. (But Grandiflora was comes from a florist so she will know better than me!) . Amouage Bracken didn’t bring out the wonderful dusty leather of bracken just after sunrise on a hot morning, JM lupin and patouchli. Didn’t capture the wonderful honeyed pollen etc etc. so, it’s more abot me than the perfume. Personally i get much more of true boronia from the boozy Ys-Uzac Immortal Beloved. And Smell Bent Yard next door is a really good gum tree in summer scent. I also got Boronia, Bracken and Lupin as blind buys so hope and expectations were heightened….

I hear you. One has quite high expectations and hopes for a peefume that purports to capture the scent of a beloved flower. I wouldn’t mind trying Immortal Beloved sometime. I think I tried the Smell Bent and didn’t enjoy it, though I can’t remember exactly why.

Perfumerie Generale Ether de Lilas today – at least I got a “G” in the name! :-) I am trying to force spring to come through pretending it is already here. Ether de Lilas doesn’t smell exactly like my mom’s big old fashioned purple lilac bushes back in Wyoming, but it smells lilac-like, and is pretty and fairly tenacious for a summer weight floral, and I wear it quite a bit – my current decant is dwindling, and I am contemplating a FB, but I have a growing FB list, since my Seville a l’Aube is almost gone, and the Mohur Extrait is also low, and replacing that will be an investment! So, I might have do to with more decants of Lilacs… :-)

I’m in St. Clair Scents First Cut, which I am loving more and more. It reminds me of a very particular end-of-summer late afternoon outdoor smell from my suburban/rural childhood. So lovely. Glad I’m wearing something calmly beautiful because I’m spending the whole day wrestling with formatting on a research report, and some of the guidance docs conflict with each other, and page numbers jkafhnvmvnl%@!. Why is it always hardest to do anything that Word is supposed to help with automatically? I almost wish I’d numbered all 500 pages by hand.

I got a sample of Glossier You in a beauty box – for some reason I was under the impression this was a neroli scent so I spritzed with abandon. Nope – it is a (weak) Santal 33 clone. I’m not much of a fan of the real thing (Tam Dao forever) and I might scrub this, which I almost never do.

I have a sample of this too that came with a glossier order (I do like their mascara) and whenever I tried it on, I could sort of taste it, so I can definitely see that spraying with abandon would be overwhelming! I think it’s their body care line that has a neroli scent but I’ve never tried it so couldn’t confirm.

Completely agree on Tam Dao, it’s fantastic stuff.

Reviewed Smell Bent Bohemian Rhapsody and didn’t like it at all. It was a sour head shop, Avignon thing. My mother is testing it out because she likes patchouli in perfume. I reached for my dwindling decant of Coromandel, wishing I had a bottle and wishing that I got a bigger decant when STC still sold Chanel decants.

Trying to stay awake in Gallivant Amsterdam. It’s soothing while I am feeling very unsoothed, the Mr. is getting the best sleep of his life on the new mattress we bought while I didn’t sleep a wink. Laying on everything for a minute each in the store is just not the same as bringing it home. And we’re past the return period. I swore I wouldn’t be one of those obnoxious ‘talk to the manager’ ladies, but we might have to try that.

AND the other person in my department at work is on vacation, so twice as much work for me. Thrilled.

Oh, dear. What did they think was wrong with Spooky?
And medicating kitties is an unenviable task! My one cat is fairly easy, but my boy Linus is a total jerk about it and very sneaky. I do have a method for when I’m home alone- I grab him by the scruff and pull back firmly which causes his mouth to open and also kind of immobilizes him (it’s less brutal than it sounds). I then push the pill in and hold his mouth closed while stroking his throat until I see a swallow. I then find the pill half dissolved in some unexpected place ??

TMI alert! Spooky has “the runs”, which might be caused by irritable bowel issues. The medicine is in some 1mL syringes with a liquid inside (no needles), since I know that pills are pretty much a no-go for any of the cats.

It seems that syringes are a big NOPE! for Spooky too. She freaks out if it gets anywhere near her face.

Awww, poor kitty. I hope you can get the medicine down the hatch!

I remember having good luck wrapping our cat in a towel and holding him like a swaddled baby in 1 arm, the syringe in my other hand ready to give him liquid medicine. His head would fly around a bit but I got most of the medicine in. I had to figure out a way to do it myself because my hubby was away, moving us to a new city at the time; we had sold our townhouse and were living in a camper temporarily. Good times!

I tried applying the medicine onto her fur, in the hopes that she would clean herself off and take it that way. Did not work at all.

The poor cat is now seriously freaked out by it all.

Vanille Insensee again, since this seems to be the one Atelier Cologne I’ve tried so far that doesn’t make Dad cough.

I got Stella for myself as an early birthday present. It was close enough to my birthday that I got a “Drunk Elephant” facial cleanser for free. I was like, “Okay, I have no idea what this is.” But it was free.

It’s been a crazy couple of weeks of doctor’s appointments (routine check-up stuff) and tax stuff. Hopefully that will let up for a while now. (*crosses fingers*)

Oh taxes! I’ve been procrastinating even though I’m pretty sure I’ll be getting a refund!

Thank you! The weather was nicer today, too, which I was happy about. :)

Also procrastinating on taxes. Hoping that we don’t owe this year due to the changes in the tax code.

SOTD = Chanel Les Exclusifs 38 La Pausa

Love this to pieces. Iris and today, leather!

I’m trying to decide which perfume to wear on Friday and it will probably be decided based on weather.

I did not get a chance to reply to the comments. I think cazaubon asked about Chanel 1957 — I like it a lot! Fizzy, very light floral soapy vanilla musk! It has the feel of No.5 L’Eau without the No.5 DNA.

jalapeño – Hotel Particulier would work well in cooler weather. It is tonka-forward which to me means not good in the heat.

Yeah, I can see how tonka could become a smothering blanket in hot weather.

8 sprays today? Or did you use more? ?

Wearing a couple sprays of vintage My Sin; I don’t seem to have a lot of small G houses so it’s a good opportunity to pick a random scent this week.

I have a dental appointment tomorrow with an oral surgeon for a consult. I think there are some expensive crowns or possibly an implant in my near future.

Yep, crowns are expensive. My sympathies.

I loathe dental work. I’ll be sending positive vibes your way for sure!

I’m not familiar with the latter but you smelled great in No. 19!
