Thursday scent of the day 2/28

Posted by Robin on 28 February 2019 209 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I am smelling SWEET in Flower by Kenzo L'Elixir.

Reminder: on 3/1, wear a fragrance by Floris, Fragonard or Frapin, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter F.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

My personal theme this week has been neglected perfumes. Today’s is Samsara. I have a somewhat vintage edt (clear bottle), I don’t know why I don’t wear it more often.

Neglected perfumes is a good theme, I would do well to rearrange my cabinet too. You smell great. (Presumably. I haven’t tried the vintage, but I even like the modern one!)

Mandragore is a nice soothing scent. You smell great! I like all the Bvlgari teas. Au Bleu is my favorite for any season. Eau de Vert is another one that I wear a lot in summer time. It is so refreshing and relaxing!

    Nankun kodo by Sultan Pasha
    Spices, herbs and woods.
The fastest and cheapeat way of transporting myself to a Japanese mountain temple ;)

I have the Shoyeido incense that inspired this fragrance as well. I need to burn it more often….

Its a small one man brand from London. He makes fantastic attars (mixes of oils and a absolutes and such, so not diluted with alcohol).

Nankun is too spicy for a temple.
Ive been to a Japanese mountain temple complex (togakushi) and the area itself smelled totay forestry. It was all about wood wood wood: gigantic trees, temples made of wood, muting and a bit of leafs and grasses in the sun. Hardly any spices.
But…afterwards we had ramen in a small restaurant near the entrance that was quite spicy and that’s what makes the connection for me. :)

Their Silver Temple sometimes called Silver Pagoda is wonderful also.

I usually buy about 12 boxes at a time or beg people to bring it to me. For a long time couldn’t get on line.

Today I light my incense for my mother. She is gone two years today. She would be 97.

Even though I am well into my morning (thanks to my ancient caterwauling cat who prefers I not sleep past 3:45), I haven’t decided on my scent of the day. Many mornings I wake up knowing, almost as if I’ve been instructed in a dream. On mornings like this one, though, I dither and dither, you know, as if it were a decision about buying a new car or donating a kidney.

Hi Lillyjo. Though I’ve had versions of the EDP for years, I am surprised to discover that I actually like the EDT better. I think that, even though I know better — I really do! — I have had this assumption that the EDP MUST be “richer.” I actually find the EDT to be warmer, more ambery, and less clovey….more of what drew me to Coco in the first place.

I’m wearing 4711 Acqua Colonia Blackberry & Cocoa, which my sister picked up in Germany. Perfect for a chilly, damp day. I’m getting both the blackberry and the chocolate notes. I wish I had a good source for the newer 4711 Acqua Colonia fragrances in the US. Even Amazon doesn’t stock the new ones.

Off work today paying bills. I am none too happy with my mother. She had said that she had a 9am dentist appointment today, so I was up at 6:45 this morning. Our dentist is an hour away. We get there an found out that she was supposed to be there Monday. If I don’t have to get up early, I don’t. Just seemed like most of the morning was wasted on her not looking at the calendar. I am excited about my package containing Ubar is coming today. Wearing LADDM right now.

Stressful couple of days so I’m skipping the F’s and going with a love! MFK Baccarat Rouge 540. $300 is more than I’m willing to spend on a bottle of anything, but I’ve been stingy with this sample. It’s worth it today, it’s bringing smiles and a compliment from my barista.

An update for those who offered their well wishes the last couple of days: my BF went to a second doctor that was way more attentive and thorough, they’re testing the fluid that’s weeping out and got him on a different medication. He’s a lot more confident in the second guy, so now we’re just kind of waiting for the new stuff to start working/test results to come back. Hoping it acts fast, my sweetheart is just MISERABLE, but outlook is better than yesterday.

Smelling of clean, sharp citrus in Fum Nerola. While this is the least original of their perfumes, it’s a very nice neroli-centric scent.

Already looking forward to the weekend. This week has been dragging a bit on the work front, but my evenings have been good because of True Detective. Watching the season finale tonight!

Definitely better than season two. I think I’ll have to withhold my answer until I’ve watched the season finale tonight and possibly after a rewatch of season 1. In my mind, I’ve propped up season 1 as a gold standard in tv shows, so I’m curious what I think on a second viewing. Season 3 is definitely worth a watch though.

MFK’s Aqua Vitae Forte for me today. This scent has me quite conflicted. There is a note, and I’m pretty sure it’s the ylang-ylang, that makes me recoil somewhat but also, it’s very appealing — really it’s both at once for much of its wearing. As time goes by it softens and I like it more and more, but that first hour is hard to stomach. I’ve got a number of compliments on it including, shocker of all shockers, my husband!

Hmm.. what to do when this decant is done.

Was just despairing that I have nothing even remotely (okay, despairing may be overstating it ;-) ) linked to the CP, when I read floragal– MFK! Francis! F! Okay then.

But not today. Today I am in DSH’s Cafe Noir and I smell like a million bucks… I am behind now on a project due tomorrow at the close of business day. I have been writing and writing and writing, and then yesterday I just hit a wall. Was distressingly curious about the news (I’ll leave it at that) AND my youngest had an interview for a conference– a week in Sacramento over the summer, all expenses paid–to be a delegate for kids with disabilities. I was alternating between being a prideful mum and news pundit and there just wasn’t a whole lot of bandwidth left for writing… Today, well tonight, I will pay for it. Hence my application of gorgeous, fancy perfume. Wish me luck.

Playing hooky today as I have a dentist appointment this morning. It’s just for a cleaning, but its snowing like crazy today so it’s easier to come home rather than traipse to the office afterwards They are very good at my dentist office but I still get stressed about going!

I think I will wear something very low key like EL Sensuous Nude or a spray of Prada Infusion d’Iris.

Just signed my next contract starting 3/25, so celebrating with Felanilla from a very kind NSTer. Now, I can really buckle down with routes, plans, etc. Last night I looked up all the UNESCO sites in North America, and there are a couple on my list for the summer! Especially wanting to visit Head Bashed In Buffalo Jump in Alberta! Can you imagine digging through stuff at the bottom of the cliffs? Bones, tools, all kinds of wonderful stuff! https://www.christchurchdailyphoto.com/2011/09/12/twisted-foot-bridge-over-the-avon-river/

The mention of the Floris perfume today has got me thinking about where I grew up on the banks of the river Avon in Christchurch. Every day I would bike along the river to school and cross a small footbridge. I always stopped on the bridge to look for trout or eels, and for about ten years a large Elephant seal called Elizabeth took up residence in the river and she used to lurk on the banks. It was a beautiful ride ( except in winter) lots of willows and a nice mulchy smell. The area along the river was pretty much completely destroyed in the earthquake and now all the houses and my old school are demolished, and the river bank and surrounding area is overgrown , like paddocks for miles and miles. The footbridge was badly damaged ( photo) but has been kept as a symbolic reminder.
    Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit…wearing Journey .

It’s 8 years since the earthquake and for a time seeing my childhood/ parents home destroyed, my school, and much of my early neighbourhood/ friends’ houses gone felt really desolate but it’s amazing to see nature take over, and render all the old suburban streets along the river almost unrecognisable. You go from feeling your past erased to feeling hope in a way. Nature is incredible.

Hi friends! So I finally sucked it up and went to the doctor yesterday. Actually, I don’t have a PCP because I’m some combination of lazy and stupid and pretending to not be an adult, so I had to go to urgent care and wait for 1.5 h to see first a nurse and then a doctor for a total of 10 min to get a prescription for an antibiotic. Then I went to Walgreens, where it took a half hour for me to get registered in their system, because apparently I haven’t picked up any prescriptions in the past two years, since coming back to America? That seems bizarre, given how many trips I’ve had to take to the doctors’.

Anyway, it’s a good thing I went because I was really taking another turn for the worse. Today I’m working from home and honestly being quite lazy about it.

I’m in the mood for something sparkly, but I am concerned about putting on my favorite sparklers (Champagne de Bois, Incense Rose), in case the antibiotics make them smell off. What goes well with microbiome-altering drugs? Maybe I’ll try some new-to-me samples.

I’m enjoying all the smells wafting up from my sweater sleeves which got a bit doused in Angel Muse the other day during decanting.
Today is the beginning of carnival season in many places; the town where I went to university (Konstanz) has a huge “dirty Thursday” tradition where people dress up in white sheets and parade/run through town. Literally everybody is in costume and people celebrate through the night. In Germany, whether there is a strong carnival season or not depends on whether the region was traditionally catholic or protestant – growing up in a Protestant region, I had no clue that carnival was actually something adults did as well as kids!
I couldn’t find a good video at all, but this one shows what it looks like, sort of:

Woke up to such a clear, sunny-but-cold day. The kind of day that usually energizes me, but, boy, have I been dragging today. I was really in the mood for lavender this morning – maybe I thought it would be a pick-me-up, but I have no lavender perfumes so went with some Lush Sleepy lotion which I don’t usually wear under clothing because it’s on the oily side. The name might be affecting me subconciously, lol. Also, the lavender is short lived and it’s mostly vanillic + cocoa butter smell after that.

I went and procured a L’Occitane orange blossom scented balm yesterday after holyneroli mentioned it. It’s nice, but it smells pretty much like the sweet Neroli & Orchidee scent they have. But I like the little tin and it’s a charitable donation.

We must be on the same wavelength with body products because I’ve been wearing Sleepy to bed almost every night lately. That *and* I got some samples of Caron Pour Un Homme in the mail yesterday, so I’m also in a lavender frame of mind.

The L’Occitane tin is pretty! I’m already thinking about how to repurpose it once the balm is gone.

This morning I was wearing F de Fragonard from a seventies looking vintage bottle. I haven’t been able to find out anything about this version. It started out old fashioned floral soapy. The drydown was what I believe to be lavender, and I ended up with a headache.
I went to the mall and ordered my new glasses. My first pair of bifocals! I’ve needed them for a long time, I’m just now conceding. I went to Macy’s where they stopped selling Aura, but did have the new summer Angel. It is very fruity, sugar berry-ey. After the initial spray, I don’t really recognize much Angel.

I’m wearing Sarah Horowitz Untitled No. 3, something I found during a big search of my perfume cabinet the other day. I had completely forgotten I had it and in fact forgotten everything about it–when and why and where I bought it. Strange. It’s a small bottle and an oil. Very nice scent in which the standouts now after a couple of hours are yuzu, coriander, and amber. It’s supposed to have some other floral notes and musk but I’m not picking those up. Sticks to the skin without much sillage, but pleasant when I catch a whiff near my hands and wrists.

I am in myrhhe eglantine – it was calling to me from the sample stash. It’s nice and cheerful and mr. yasmina paid me a rare perfume comment.

I had to teach today and it wasn’t enough to cover up the cigarette stink of one of my students. I am an ex-smoker and am always horrified when i realize i must have smelled like that all the time!

Good for you for kicking the cigarette habit! My bf started smoking at a frighteningly young age and recently made the switch to an e-cigarette. I really want him to quit entirely, but gosh it sounds like such a tough addiction to break.

I smoked a pack a day for 10 years so I know how hard it is to quit. What did it for me was reading Allan Carrs book where he explains that it is precisely the framing of quitting as a question of self-will that gets in the way of quitting. I highly recommend you buy this book for your bf if he is open to trying something new!

Ha! Same here. I was smoking in utero and never know how not to smoke until about a decade ago. Aren’t we glad we quit? And just think of all the money saved that can now be diverted to perfume! ?

Encens Mythique combined with one spritz of Rose Barbare. I love combining/layering a few of my Guerlains. Cuir Beluga plays well with others too. ?

Easing back into perfume after being sick with a sample of Hippie Rose on one arm and Amber 114 on the other. The amber is obliterating the rose.

Heeley. I need to try it by itself. I couldn’t get a sense of compared to the amber. Don’t think I’m going to need it though. Thank goodness.

2nd of 3 Fragonards being re-tested for the CP is “Beau Gosse”.

Just for a laugh, here are the supposed notes:
    Top: citruses, lemon, bergamot, lotus and fruity notes;
    Mid: rosemary, nutmeg, cardamom and cloves;
Base: musk, patchouli and virginia cedar.

And here are the real notes:
    Top: airline wet wipe;
Mid: no, it’s fading to oblivion already…
Base: don’t be silly, it’s long gone.

    Beau Gosse = Bogus.

Today’s perfume was brought to you by the letter F, as in Fragonard, feeble and faded.

I think I will wear Annick Goutal “Myrrh Ardente” to bed – it’s 01:00 Friday morning here; I’ve been up late doing monthly expenses. Invoicing tomorrow. Wheeeee! (I don’t think) :^D

For the final day of my Red Package challenge, I wore the ultimate Red Package perfume in my collection – CHANEL No5 L’eau RED EDITION. Same juice, different packaging. ❤️?❤️?❤️?❣️

It’s been quite the crazy week for me. After putting in a full day’s worth of work, I have had 1-3 calls with colleagues in Asia everyday this week, including later tonight. Thank God it’s Friday tomorrow. It’s Rabbit x 3 time as well!

I din’t Know why Indidn’tnthink if It sooner. When it’s colder out orbwhen there’s precipitation, I usually wear boots to commute in and end up wearing them all day. Last Sunday, I bought a pair of all black Skechers slip ons and switched to theme when I got to the office. While Inalready usually have a spring to my step, this pair made me bouncy! I highly recommend it. I will post a link in a different comment as I don’t want to lose everything I’ve typed so far.

I asked my Macy’s lady today, if they sold many red bottles over the holidays. She said they didn’t sell many compared to the regular ones due to the price difference. Apparently, the rep came and took back what was left. I imagine the more exclusive stores did better with them. Do you have a March project planned?

No March project planned yet and probably won’t – it took too much brain space and I would rather use it for something else!

A hectic day, an early start, and no chance to even think of perfume this morning. So I’m going to take a shower now and then cover myself in Queen body butter… I will smell like my own little party.

I have never managed to remember this, ever! So I’m cheating by a few hours: Rabbit! Rabbit! Rabbit!

(I wish this would make the predicted snow and sleet for tomorrow magically disappear…)
