Tuesday scent of the day 2/26

Posted by Robin on 26 February 2019 247 Comments

Tuesday, Pistachio Day, Victor Hugo's birthday, 22 days of winter left to endure. (And don't forget the splitmeet is still open!) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Hermès Brin de Réglisse because Coumarin wore it yesterday. Tea at the moment is a Lumbini Estate Ceylon from Upton.

Reminder: on 3/1, wear a fragrance by Floris, Fragonard or Frapin, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter F.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the porcelain Walk in the Garden teapot from Hermès is $960.

I’ve just sprayed some Géranium pour monsieur by Frédéric Malle. It was the only fragrance I could think of that is minty.
I need to start wearing my Hermessences as well, I just love Brin de Réglisse.

It skews masculine, which is OK. It is supposed to smell of black spices like pepper, licorice, leather. It is herbal to me. I won’t wear it often, but I will when I want some relief from fruits and florals and sweet gourmands.

No perfume today. I’ve got a nasty cold and can’t smell a thing. I just received three perfume packages yesterday too, but will have to hold off on wearing them.

My father has been moved out of the ICU and seems to be doing better. He is going to be getting physical therapy. I am hoping that I am well enough tomorrow to go see him and try to get some info.

Thanks to everyone for the well wishes. My father seems to be out of immediate danger but it remains to be seen how he will do long term as far as regaining mobility and such.

I did think it was an ironic touch that my perfume orders arrived just at a time when I can’t smell them at all. One of them is a FB of Ariose, and I am eager to be able to smell it again.

Box of Eels, to compare and contrast with yesterday’s Samsara. Do I really need them both? Although the Chanel is older, the Samsara feels more “dated” to me.

For all you fellow 80’s music lovers out there:
    https://youtu.be/5ixRWvrkUHo
When I took my daughter back to college last month, I let her play DJ and stream music from her phone for the drive. “Gimme the aux!” Is what she always says. At one point we listened to this and No Doubt’s version back to back. We came to the unanimous agreement that even though we love Gwen, it’s hard to top Talk Talk. RIP Mark Hollis.

He was only 64, which back in the day I would have considered “old.” Not anymore.

The Chanel feels smoother/creamier/richer, but also easier to wear. In short: it’s gorgeous!

I can’t wear Samsara either. But I do like how it smells. I spray it inside the shower where it scents my whole house. (And then when I take a shower it washes off the tiles.) This has turned out to be a good way for me to be able to enjoy it!

So sad – Mark was an amazing musician and singer. I still listen to Talk Talk a lot. I remember at age 22, working in a record store when ‘It’s my Life’, the album, was released. I took that play copy home and taped it onto a cassette! I’d listen to it on my Walkman (!) everywhere I went as well as Ultravox’s ‘Lament’ and ‘New Gold Dream’ from Simple Minds. I feel very lucky to have experienced that era of music while it unfolded.

I am wearing my sample of Dilettante today to decide if I like it enough to break my no-buy to jump in on the split meet… the answer is I LOVE it enough, and my no-buy is now a lo-buy, because I’ll definitely end up needing this someday but I never need a whole bottle of anything. Come join the split, people! It is the only orange blossom I love, somehow green and sultry at the same time…

C.H. made a comment on the end of her thread on the splitmeet about how NST folks are a bunch of perfume enablers. lol I remember the post a few weeks ago that focused on talking people down from getting new bottles of perfume. Some folks were very good at talking others down, although there were a couple of laments about how it would be good if they followed their own advice. :) Other people who commented were enablers, despite the thread. (“I think I missed the point.” lol) Switching from a no-buy to a low-buy seems relatively reasonable to me. Encouraging others in the process — well, fortunately, this week doesn’t have a post about talking others down. lol I’m not trying to be critical here. I just find it funny. :)

I don’t think anyone would find you critical! I always think “enabler” is tossed around in loving jest here – and maybe a sign of the love/hate relationship we all have with our perfume spending.

Undina took home the Oscar I think for the best talker-downer

        • neyronrose says:
          26 February 2019 at 8:22 pm

Yes, I was impressed with the way she was very logical, and made excellent points. Although in convincing someone not to buy full bottles, she mentioned that the line had travel sprays. Then the person she was trying to talk down replied, “They have travel sprays?” and then said (paraphrasing), “You tried to talk me down from the ledge, but I went off the cliff.” *That* was funny. Oh, well, you tried on that one, Undina. (Not trying to be mean, but the reported end results there made me giggle.)

I agree with you in Undina winning for “best talker-downer,” though. Yay! Sorry, no statue. But I think there must be gratitude from the people you saved from breaking their budgets. :)

I also noticed that some people commented that they were firmly on no-buys for some months or longer. A couple of those folks confessed that they’d gotten *way* carried away in the quarter leading up to the winter holidays, which was why they had gone on a no-buy for at least the first few months of 2019. It’s very, very rare for me to find a happy medium for myself, but from what I hear, people do accomplish this. :) Please, if you can do that, give me tips on how!

The logic applied to convincing someone not to do stress-shopping is something I should have printed out and hung over my computer. My reaction to hearing, “You need four new tires,” probably shouldn’t have been, “I’ll go get DVDs and books and gardening supplies!”

Then I got the “That was not a healthy reaction” talk.

Me, shamefaced, “Guess not.” I took the DVDs back.

Thanks for the well wishes yesterday, everyone. The BF is on antibiotics, it still looked pretty gross this morning, but gotta give them time to do their thing. Fingers crossed.

The only smaller F’s I have are Fortune Cookie Soap, an indie Lush sort of brand. I get their subscription box for the bath/body products but they usually come with a perfume oil so I probably have more than a dozen of the little things. They’re the sort of fun but not really complex scents that I prefer in soaps and lotions and whatnot rather than perfume most of the time, but they’re nice to have in the purse for a little pick me up or a no brainer.

So there’s the overall brand review, today I’m wearing Inconceivable. Flambéed pear with amber. It may be pretty simple, but it is a pear I like, which I usually don’t.

    Happy Tuesday!

    1) Yum! I am gonna get a piece of pistachio baklava after work and have it with some tea!

    2) Am in Shea Moisture’s Daily Defense Body Butter, which just happens to have pistachio oil (!) and in Virgile
(from the Delacourte sampler), which makes for a great combo.

I find that Virgile is very pretty, a soft green citrus with a big powdery vanilla drydown. This needs a warm day to live up to potential.

I tried Infusion Mandarine yesterday while in town and really loved it but for one thing: projection. It was the equivalent of a too-weak cup of plunger coffee for me to fully enjoy, though I still might have been tempted if they had something smaller than 100ml. Loved the mandarin though. Wearing Lush Sun to compensate. Yesterday I mentioned the grave with only “WAITING” written on it. Well, Lush Sun is like the grave further along the path that has “All’s Well” written on it.

That’s so interesting about the graves. There are only those words written on them, with no names or dates? Is that traditional, or some sort of message to those still on earth? I’m so intrigued…?

Sorry, there are names and dates but no other inscription. I have searched for a biography but there is no information about the ‘waiting’ family, so I don’t know if they were expecting company or not. I’m am really intrigued, too…it is a family plot so the dates of death range over a 50 year span….so maybe the first one who died was ‘waiting’ for the others??? More likely waiting to enter heaven. They have a Scottish surname.

I have been making notes of the graves with non-religious passages on them:
        Waiting
        All’s Well
Remembered with fondness by those who knew him
        A loving mother
        …there are a few.

SOTD = Rising Phoenix Umami Crema 2018 Premium Sri Lankan Sandalwood Oil

I am no sandalwood snob – I am not well versed in origins but if a name triggers virtual salivation, I sit up straighter. I first encountered the word “umami” from a Food Network show. All I know is my impression is that it means it has a certain extra special taste. Judging by my quick google search, I was actually correct; but there was so much scientigoobledeguk that I decided to stop reading. Anyway, all these to say that Umami Crema smells really good to my nose.

    https://www.etsy.com/listing/680758547/umami-crema-2018-premium-sri-lankan

As it turned out, I am still 26/26 on my February Red Packet challenge! Even my wearing of American Perfumer DSH Colorado in Sunday counted because I associated it with Laughing Cow Cheese and the cow is red. Umami Crema came in a red velvet pouch so w00t w00t!

In other news, regarding the Splitmeet:
    – Calypso, please email me. If you only want 5mL of Tiger’s Nest, I have a taker for the other 5.
    – Participants – I will send you the “official” email later
    – I may add 2 things in the next few days (surprise!)

In other other news, I assembled 9 bags / boxes worth of stuff to give away although I did not dip into any of the DVDs. Instead, among other things, I donated 12 pairs of boots and shoes that I had been holding onto for a long time, most of which I haven’t worn in the past 5 years. Gonzo!

I get a floral and musky smell from it. I’m not particularly catching a praline candy sort of scent, which I was somewhat expecting. I should have looked up the notes first. To me, the musky part of the scent is nice, not objectionable at all. If I’m using the word right, the floral part is more indolic than I expect from a rose. I have tried to grow musk roses, but that was some years ago. The floral doesn’t strike me as a Damask rose or tea rose scent at all, at least. I may well be missing some notes because I’m dried out from the dry heat in the house. (I’m glad we have heat, though!)

Thanks for the input, Elisa! :)

Once I looked at the notes, I realized that I’d missed nearly all of the top notes. Also, I realized that I mistakenly expect a pure Damask rose scent if there’s “rose” in the name of the perfume. That’s not the point with a gourmand, though, as I’m learning. When I saw sandalwood listed as a base note, then I recognized it. And the amber adds the Oriental feeling.

I’ll have to try it again when I’m in a place humid enough and warm enough for me to get the top notes.

          Take care!

I was looking for an F but got distracted by Diptyque Fleur de Peau, which I think gets me partial credit for the “Fleur.” Only three sprays today, since I can almost totally smell again :) I smell gorgeous, if I do say so myself. I think this goes on the travel spray list, if not the FB list.

Florabello is the worst perfume I’ve tried from Diptyque. There are definitely more worthwhile perfumes from them. Tam Dao, Eau Duelle, Volutes, L’Ombre dans L’eau and the jasmine and mimosa perfumes from the Essences Insensees series are my favorites.

I’m wearing Dzongka today from a decant from a generous NSTer. Love, love, love.

I have a no-buy conundrum. I will finish this decant well before the end of 2019 (when I’m aiming to end my no-buy). I could finish it before mid-March if I wore it the way I want to.

What are your thoughts on replacement buys during a no-buy? Do they still count as buys, or is replenishment different than a brand-new acquisition? Just curious what everyone’s opinion is.

Ok, this is my idea of “rational no buy” perfume guideline.

      The definite no buy reasons-

      1) no buy- “new to you” scent that you’ve just tried for the first or second time and “I loved you at first sniff!”
      2) no buy- no blind buys
      3) no buy- no “I developed a lemming from NST” buys
      4) no buy- fear of reformilation or discontinuation buys.
      5) no buy- I tried it before and think I might love it but
      6) no buy- financially difficult buy

Good reasons to break your no buy:
      1) BUY- you’ve gone through one or more decants (= or > 5ml) and the scent still calls to you.
2)BUY- you’ve developed a “relationship” with the scent and it works on good days and bad days, winter, spring, summer, fall, in sickness and in health.
      3) BUY- you’ve gone a couple of months without, and you keep thinking about it.
      4) BUY- you’ve sampled many moons ago, have been without it for a long period of time, and it’s still in the top 20 of you collection. If it’s #21, it goes on the no buy list above because you don’t love it enough to mitigate the guilt of breaking your no buy.

Crystal clear. At least to me. You’re welcome! ?

I think as long as the no-buy is self-imposed, meaning not a financial agreement you have with a spouse, significant other, or family member, then you may make exceptions for yourself. When weighing the decision to buy a replacement bottle, ask yourself what will make you happier – to completely and fully not buy any perfume for the period you’ve designated OR to buy another bottle of a frequently worn and loved perfume and stick to your no-buy otherwise.

Also, I’m having a hard time with my no/low buy right now. I am trying to not buy any new bottles until my birthday in April (samples, discovery sets, and thoughtful decant purchases are allowed). However, there is an amazing deal I’ve been watching on eBay, and I am sure it won’t be around still in April. I’ve been debating with myself for weeks about it!

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on point of view), I would say that even replenishing a loved perfume is a buy. Now, it is up to the person doing the no-buy to decide if that is a valid enough reason for an exemption.

Sampling some of the new fancy Diors today… not loving any of them. They’re still well-made but, umm, more boring than their older scents. Holy Peony is, duh, peony, plus fruity sweety. Dioramour is so reserved (iris/makeup) that it is practically in hiding. Terra Bella is a much quieter version of Hermes Orange Verte (didn’t know that was possible). Not sure who their target market is, but it’s not ME. Which is a pity since I got along so well with so many of their older scents. $ saved I suppose. And of course I’m in no danger of running out of the old stuff anyway.

Testing out a new tea today too, Black Mist from TeaRunners. Oddly apple-y. Striking out, left and right!

Hello NST! So, what is an easier repair than a busted hose for a clothes washer? A loose one. The outlet hose on my washer was the cause of all my aggro on Sunday and yesterday. There will be a change to how I wash certain loads to prevent a recurrence of this in the future.

SOTD = back in Infusion d’Iris, since I wasn’t sure how the service call was going to go. Thankfully it went well!
