Thursday scent of the day 1/31

Posted by Robin on 31 January 2019 221 Comments

Almost-Friday and Backward Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm taking partial credit for the cherry pipe tobacco in Diptyque Volutes.

Reminder: on 2/1, we'll celebrate Cherry Month...wear a fragrance with a cherry or cherry blossom note.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Missouri Meerschaum Country Gentleman Corn Cob Tobacco Pipe is about $11 at Amazon.

    Evil Max, 4160 Tuesdays.
Lurking somewhere underneath all the bitter, smoky mossiness is a black cherry note. I still can’t find it.

Still commando, since I’m headed off to the gym in a bit.

But, I’m burning a Paddywax Louisa May Alcott candle that fits the CP! It’s scented with cherry blossoms and ivy.

I have been in such a rush lately, that I forgot to comment on the tea you were having very recently. You were having a cup of Russian tea, and it caught my attention because I just bought some from Harney & Sons. This is the first time I am trying Russian tea. It is definitely different from any teas I have had in the past. I am enjoying it.

Yes, it is similar to Lapsong Souchong (spelling maybe off)
I like it because its different, and depending on my mood I have it milk and honey or just straight up.

I reach for this when I have grown tired of the other teas in my collection (and I have a collection!)

Another snow day here.❄️ We are currently minus 21. There are reports of power outages and water main breaks in the area. I’m just grateful our old furnace is still running and we are all safe.
I’m layered up and keeping it classy in Box of Eels.

Curious as to what temperature your furnace is on? Normally mine stays at 68, but right now I have it at 72 until tomorrow. The governor sent us all texts messages to turn our heat down to 65, but I have an old house with old pipes .. anyway, was just wondering

Brace yourself: during this cold snap we have been keeping the thermostat at 62, which is usually what we turn it down to at night. During the day it is normally set at 65 and it just seemed like the furnace ran non-stop. I have an old house too- 90+ years- which means old windows. Our attic is super insulated though so the upstairs is about 10 degrees warmer, we just hang out upstairs when it’s cold like this. And dress in layers.?

I like hearing about your rose choices. I am really inspired to find a rose perfume this year. I tried the Estee Lauder ones and the YSL ones we have in the shops. There is a beautiful rose in the grayeyard where I walk that smells like turkish delight and the scent carries a long way in the heat and mingles with the eucalyptus from the huge trees . It’s a great combination.

Rose is one of my favourite notes, but I’ve never found a perfume quite like a real rose. The rose in the graveyard sounds beautiful.
My mother has a small bush of Etoile de Holland, which has a wonderful scent, and I was so excited when Mona di Orio brought out a perfume named after that rose. Sadly, it doesn’t smell much like rose to me.

Belated comment: 50_Roses sent me the solid perfumes of “Imogen Rose” and “Breath of God.” The package came on the 31st, and I tried “Imogen Rose” that evening. I liked it. When I first started reading NST, I got several samples of the rose perfumes on the recommended rose perfumes post. I think I liked the relatively more straightforward rosy perfumes (soliflores) more than the Oriental rose or rose chypre sorts. I’ll have to look up what I tried. I know I liked the Perfumer’s Workshop Tea Rose pretty well. I think my favorite remains Yardley of London English Rose.

I had a job once like this, but I think it still came with 10 days rather than 5….I ended up taking lots of unpaid leave to compensate (but this was before kids etc. – I realize taking unpaid leaven is not a realistic choice for many of us). After 5 years with the company, I got an extra day….

Oh well, I’m in this Urban Outfitters cheap as chips one note wonder. Into the giveaway pile it goes (if you are a fan of Urban Outfitters perfumes, this morning’s surfing the web led me to their website and their sale on 1 oz bottles of perfume for $14. Boochani’s story is being widely covered in local news here, and is a very hopeful development. The situation with the refugees on Manus and Nauru of course I’ve been following. I am looking forward to reading his book. I haven’t heard much about the actual book–his personal story is so extraordinary.

Speaking of books, I am reading Milkman just now, which won the Man Booker prize last year. So far I am enjoying it enormously!

Not a cherry or cherry blossom in sight today, just Chypre Mousse for the cold.

I’m wearing head to to icelandic wool–a sweater and legwarmers. Not even close to fashionable, but it’s my favorite thing to wear in the cold because it keeps me so warm. Thank you, little Icelandic sheep!

Just want to put in a plug for the Icelandic movie “Rams,” which is a strange, funny, and poignant film about two brothers who are sheep farmers next door to each other, but estranged. Some of the sheep are named in the cast and are really great!

Phlur Hepcat which perfectly matches Robin’s visual. It’s -6 and with wind-chill – 20 and the cherry really pops in the cold. I have gotten four compliments from co-workers. This is fantastic in extreme cold.

Zero credit today with Tauer PHI. I don’t think I like it. It’s taken a 1-mL sample plus 3 mL of a decant for me to decide this. (What?! What’s wrong with me?) It’s just…I’m supposed to like this, so I’ve kept convincing myself that I do, but I really don’t think I do. It’s like asparagus. That’s, like, a pretty chic veggie that is commonly liked, right? But I don’t like it, and I shouldn’t have to!

You may recall that I’ve been pretty stressed out about work for the past few months. Well, I’ve just decided to…work less. For the past week or so, I just leave when I think I’ve had enough for the day. How pressing can this stuff really be? What could be more important than mental health? I’ve worked at most 50 h in the past week, and I feel so much better about life. Eventually, all my work might come crashing down on me, but maybe it won’t. We’ll see! Fingers crossed!

I proved to myself that when I try hard to persuade myself that I like some perfume when I actually don’t, it never works. I can keep thinking that I like it but then I never choose to wear it. So, with some perfumes it seems I like the idea of them but not the experience.

I think your attitude towards work is not only healthier but it’ll also work fine for you if you keep it like that going forward. But It’s hard to maintain for those of us who are either workaholics or habitual worriers. Good luck!

I’m trying really hard to break my workaholic tendencies! (I don’t know if I have any hope of breaking my worrying tendencies. That seems like a harder problem to solve.) Especially in the Bay Area, where workaholism is just part of the culture, it’s so hard to take a step back.

If it’s any reassurance, I’ve finally given myself permission to not like Shalimar.

Smart move on cutting back on your hours. The obligation seems to become heavier and more compelling the more one does. From my experience, getting a bit more time back can have a *huge* effect on that perception.

OMG. I hate Shalimar. I first smelled it in a mall and liked the opening, so I sprayed some on myself. (This was in pre-perfumista days.) Half an hour later, when I got home, I could not scrub my skin hard enough to get rid of the STENCH.

And agreed on a little more free time going a long way :)

Yes, good for you!!!!! On several levels. No one is going to do it for us. It’s up to us to make life better. I’ve recently begun leaving at a more reasonable time as well as not checking email on weekends.

One of my co-workers tells me “there’s always more work. None of this is THAT important.” I know he’s right, but it’s not always easy to put it into practice.

Springpansy! I did not look at my work phone or computer A SINGLE TIME last weekend! I was soooooo proud of myself. That said, every couple hours, I’d have a teeny tiny panic attack and be like, OMG, is there something work-related I should be dealing with?!

I agree with your coworker, and yeah, it’s much easier in theory than in practice. Best wishes to you to stick with a more reasonable work-life balance!

I LOVE the Tauers I like (LADDM, Lonesome Rider, and Rose Flash are among my very favorite scents!), and cannot stand the rest (le Maroc and Eau d’Epices have all the right notes, so why do they smell so awful?!). It’s a very polarizing line for me!

It seems it is a line of fragrance that inspires passionate feelings. I adore Lonestar Memories, Phi, Rose Flash, Incense Flash and would love to obtain a bottle of Le Maroc! There is some ISO E super in Phi, which gives it some more lift, I am not going to lie, the first 15 minutes are rough for me. Then it settles down into a rather lovely, masculine rose. I think it smells just like Lush Rose Jam shower gel!

Last day/night in Glasgow, heading out for dinner shortly. Didn’t make any fragrance purchases, or earrings either, for that matter! Have been
wearing Muguet Porcelaine since Tue, sample acquired during visit last year. Here in the UK it’s only available at Hermes shops or concessions in upmarket department stores, unlike some other Hermes fragrances which can be picked up in Debenham’s for example. I really like it, husband not so keen when I used it Tue morning for journey down. Didn’t think to check the price when I was in Fraser’s, might do so before I leave tomorrow, though I think it’s in the ‘exclusive’ range given lack of general availability.

…not to be an enabler or anything (hahaha) but, if you didn’t want to commit to a big bottle and were maybe thinking of a box of four travel sprays that they do there… I’d be happy to go halfsies or other fractionsies with you. Ah! Ambre Narguilé, Vétiver Tonka, Myrrhe Églantine, and Épice Marine are probably my favorites. I already have travel sprays or full bottles of three of those four, though, so I’d get Myrrhe Eglantine, Poivre Samarcande, Iris Ukiyoe, and Vanille Galante, I think. Ah, pretty fantasies. I love almost all of them, except Cuir d’Ange and Agar Ébène :)

Apologies, I didn’t see this post of yours until after I got home! I would have considered splitting a sample pack for sure, depending on what else it contained. I definitely grew to love Muguet Porcelaine the more times I wore it, so a definite possibility for the future. I did pop by the Dior counter & ask if the chap you mentioned in our previous chat was still there & the answer was yes, but he was at lunch at the time – thought I’d let you know in any case.

You didn’t ask me, but CAMEL IS AMAZING. It’s a super-dry, spicy bunch of dried fruit–dates, raisins, that sort of thing. It’s got a good dose of smoke and amber and incense in it, too. It’s a leeeetle dirty (I expect that’s the camel coming out), but that’s low-key enough that it is still my absolute favorite recent release!

Today’s perfume is Indochine 4 sprays. It has a slightly buttery note like the shimmering butter or oil that appears on the surface of broth, that appeals to me in the cold weather. There isn’t a cherry note but the fruity sweet honey and beeswax is a good stand in for it.

No cherry/CP for me today, but I’m just down the street in plum… showered with Molten Brown Muddled Plum and used the matching body lotion. Sprayed Natori all over, since I’ve gone pretty anosmic to it. And I think I used up the Encens Jinhae sample, so I got nuthin’ for tomorrow either.

Thanks all for the sweet condolences on my cat. Oddly, I won’t share it on FB but will here….

Spent morning dealing with health insurance company. Angry with them for not properly disclosing a change in our policy before I renewed for 2019. Then I managed to tip over a tall lidded cup containing sparkling water onto a bunch of tax documents and down into my favorite red booties. Sigh…

Can’t believe some of the hijinks I see in the Midwest cold. One woman on Twitter went outside with wet hair and bent over so when she straightened up, it was frozen vertically. And people outside with big water pistols…but it’s so cold, snow comes out. It’s not so bad here. Was 6 when I woke up, but has climbed to a balmy 16.

I couldn’t imagine going out in this weather in wet hair! I was outside during that flash snow we had yesterday, and was pretty sure my forehead got frost bite between the wet snow and the wind.
Sorry about your morning chaos- hope things have smoothed out by now, and your boots are dry!

I thought I was participating by wearing Pirouette Essentials Cherry Blossom Girl (it’s discontinued), but apparently there’s no cherry blossom note. The back of the bottle says “Flirty, joyful notes of neroli, honeysuckle, and mandarin, like the sweet musk of cherry blossoms in spring.” Oh well. Initially it was all about neroli, but now it’s wearing creamier about four hours after application.

I’m so excited about dinner tonight. My friend and I are going to JuneBaby for the first time. It won the 2018 James Beard award for best new restaurant in the country! The chef also won Best Chef Northwest. He’s pretty cute too. I hope he’s there cooking tonight!

I’m off-project too, wearing Casablanca by St. Clair Perfumes. I feared it might be too potent to wear to class but it’s quieted down and mostly seems to be a skin scent by now. Lovely and cheerful on this gray day.

This is as close to cherry as I have – Baiser Vole Lys Rose. I mean, it smells pink, like cherries might? Fits our balmy temps here, too.

And now I am in Colorado…wow! This is potent! Starts off smoky but there is an underlying sweetness to it…dries down to what smells to me like immortelle absolute….this is really really good stuff! Thank you 50_Roses :)

I am in Una Tira l’Altra (Hilde Soliani) today and it’s pretty much just cherries with maybe a booze note.

I just saw a little bird on the second slat of my deck railing (under the top part of the railing.) He was all fluffed out, trying to stay warm. The polar vortex is starting to leave my area and they keep telling us that it will be above freezing over the week-end. Hope they are right!

I’m in Madrid for a couple of days. There is a really nice perfume store here called Le Secret du Marais (no affiliation). And the SA (though I wore my tourist garb of comfortable jeans and sneakers) let me be to browse and sniff. I didn’t buy anything, I’m on a no-buy remember? But treated myself to a lovely symphony concert by the Oslo Philharmonic. Brahms’ Piano Concerto no 1. PS I did like LADDM though. Sigh of relief!

I think you deserve a vacation more than I do. I was just going a little crazy with my son’s school stress and work hadn’t been great for a while too. So I found a really cheap airticket (not exactly tourist season!, but the paintings haven’t left the Prado) and I stay in a cheap pension. My husband is coping at home!

I pulled out my super warm, not kidding it’s cold alpaca wool socks for today. Also roasted some Brussels sprouts for dinner. I’d say I’m doing a pretty good job of staying warm. All 3 cats have plastered themselves on the heat vents for most of the day.

SOTD = Boyfriend again. I’m getting a bit of a “vanilla birthday cake” vibe from it that I have never noticed before. I’m getting a little restless and wanting to wear other scents now.

I didn’t bother to wear perfume today since I had on many, many layers. I did use my Toke body cream from my recently-arrived Rad Soap Co sampler. It’s nice and it lingers pretty well-sandalwood and vanilla. My hands still smelled after washing them. Looking forward to trying the soap samples- one of them smells like gardenia and spearmint!
The lip balm OTOH smells super weird and a little nauseating. Kind of like motor oil! Does lanolin smell weird?

It does, right? The actual scent is supposed to be a citrusy mango, but that gasoline smell! I haven’t used anything with lanolin in eons.

I can’t say that I remember what lanolin smells like, but I do know that I can’t use it in lotions. Makes me break out in itchy little bumps.

I wore Alien edt for work, which I prefer because it’s only a little strange instead of intensely strange. Diptyque Fleur de Peau tonight, though, which feels perfect post-shower, snuggled in against the cold.

It’s like the edp but more relaxed. Some orange blossom takes the place of some of the jasmine. I could see why people who love the original would find it weak, but I prefer it because it doesn’t beat me (or my colleagues or students) over the head.
