Wednesday scent of the day 1/30

Posted by Robin on 30 January 2019 366 Comments

Happy Hump Day and happy Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution! (And if you're in the path of the polar vortex, do take care.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm doing chocolate cherry lip gloss, in Lolita Lempicka Sweet.

Reminder: on 2/1, we'll celebrate Cherry Month...wear a fragrance with a cherry or cherry blossom note.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

No cherries in my collection, sadly.

SOTD is OJ Tiare. I smell AMAZING y’all!

Thinking warm thoughts for all you northerners out there! Stay safe!

There are so many of you with no cherry perfumes, I am sorry! I had no idea it was so rare.

It’s still cool to see all the cherry perfumes that aren’t on my radar!

It’s funny, because I think of myself as someone who likes ‘fruity’ frags, but it’s not true. I just like citrusy frags.

Mito by Vero Profumo — not just scent of the day, but it’s been the scent of the week. Obsessed with it presently. A sepia-toned wonderland. The only tuberose note I run toward. Depth of a sweetness that is almost fermented/malted. And now it feels a touch memento mori, too. (But no cherries.)

No cherries here either. I used to have a bottle of the Occitane cherry bodylotion. I’m on the other end of the olfactory spectrum in Lonestar Memories, eminently suitable for work ;)

Excellent choice. I heard on the radio this morning that somewhere or other they’re laying down kerosene-soaked ropes and setting them on fire to thaw rails (not sure if it was railroad rails or commuter-rail rails), so cities are apparently (in part) on fire.

    SotD = Infusion d’Iris edt

I’ve missed this lovely scent, one of my greatest perfume loves of recent years. The bottle called to me this morning, I could not resist.

Infusion d’Iris smells like I feel after a warm shower on a cold evening, I’m wrapped in my favorite softest bath robe, and Yo Yo Ma is playing a Bach cello suite just for me.

Enjoy your Wednesday, NSTers! Be well, warm, safe, and beautifully fragranced. :D :D :D

So, I got an alert on my phone this morning that read, “Your morning briefing is ready: It will be colder in the Midwest today than in Antarctic.” Gee, thanks.? Nothing like starting the day on a positive note. I did plan ahead for this though and I have a pork butt in the crockpot. No intentions on even stepping a foot outside today. My daughter is home for the third consecutive snow day, which means longer into June. Sigh.

I’m in the last of my Arbole Arbole sample. Thunk.

I passed the Chanel counter today so I decided to give the edp of 31 rue cambon a try… It was less ‘sparkly’ and less green. It felt kinda flat, if that makes sense.

I been sniffing a lot today so my nose couldve been worn down, and back home i washed my arm and i did not get to the complete dry down. But still I dare say I prefer the edt!

I just heard that snow days get tacked on to the school year at the end, which I suppose makes sense – but it makes summer planning a little trickier. Or do parents just take their kids out of school regardless?

It’s hard here because they have exams at the end. Most school districts build in a certain number of snow days, so you only go farther into June if you use more that.

When my son was younger, we always assumed school might end up to a week later than planned.

Our district builds in 2-3 snow days every year. Last year we didn’t use any, and now this year we will go over, so one never knows. Some years they’ve added minutes to each day and others they add actual days on in June. I’m sure I’ll find out soon how the time will be made up.

we go over every year (we have four days built in) and then they take days away from the Easter /spring break…I don’t care because we don’t go on vacations but for some folks it does impact upon their vacation plans. You would think the district would just plan for 5-6 days.

I’m in Italian Leather today. On an unrelated note, at this time of year I get to watch the dawn as I put on makeup, and this morning the sky is crystal clear, the crescent moon was right above the trees outside my window, and there was a thin jet trail angling just below the moon. The sky went from off-black, to that luminous dark blue, to now a pearly sky-blue. And the jet stream has widened out and turned pink. Gorgeous.

That box never showed ALL the most recent reviews, only reviews of more popular scents. But we are doing fewer of those, I should think about getting rid of the box altogether. At the very least I should get some newer stuff in there, so thanks for the reminder.

And there really isn’t any way to see ONLY reviews, but you will find them all if you browse through the “perfume talk” topic. It’s probably 80% reviews, plus a few other things:

How is Patchouli Intense? It’s one of the few PdNs I haven’t tried, and I while I like trying all their stuff, about half doesn’t work for me, and half is great. Is it more a cologne type, masculine leaning scent?

Patchouli Intense is not working for me either. It smells like a men’s cologne. I get lots of lavender and not much patchouli. Quite soapy with a creamy vanilla in the drydown. It has an astringent vibe. I am glad the sample is gone.

    Sotd Moonlight Patchouli, Thunk!
Our schools will be closed the rest of the week. I’m still debating if I will go to work tonight, because they are jerks and won’t close. The mall is closed but I’m a stand alone store. There is so much snow. I don’t want to go, but will feel like a wimp if I don’t.

You want to see a weather wimp look at me: the coldest temp I’ve ever experienced was about 25 degrees, just once, and that was only for the time it took me to get from the car to indoors. Reading about all the wintry travails here just makes me shiver. So far this winter I haven’t even turned on my heater.

Spending the morning in Epic. Last night, I counted how many blankets I have on my bed in preparation for the polar vortex. I counted 4 and found a light blanket to put on my dog. Jake sleeps on my bed and my room is either really cold or really hot and I didn’t want him to get cold. My post shower choices are vintage BaV, Shalimar or Une Rose Chypree. I wish I could just decide.

When I’d visit my elderly parents in January, they’d have the heat going at 75 (in Northern California). It was so difficult, especially when trying to sleep. I finally told myself to think of it as summer, without the air conditioning on. For some reason that helped mentally….

Wait–75 is like summer WITHOUT air conditioning? I keep the thermostat at 76 in the summer, and that is with the A/C cycling on and off all day long. Without A/C it would be at least 90.

Once when we visited my in-laws in Colorado in February, I almost roasted in their house. It felt like it was about 80 in the guest room and I hadn’t brought anything short sleeved as the temps were low 50s in the day and 20s at night. I mentioned that it was hot but my MIL claimed she couldn’t do anything about it. We actually slept with the window open at night and the ceiling fan on high trying to cool the room down a bit.

Hi friends, I looked for my sample of Black Perfecto today and couldn’t find it :( That suggests with 98 % probability that I finished the sample last year, and have nooooo cherries in my collection. I LOVE the cherry note in Black Perfecto and it’s on my to-buy list, and I’m a little bummed I didn’t snag a bottle of it before my no-buy started.

So instead I’m wearing Bal d’Afrique from a decant very kindly sent to me by an NSTer, and I smell great. Speaking of vetiver: last night on Jeopardy!, a contestant said she liked to make her own perfumes using essential oils! Alex Trebek asked her what her favorite note was, and she said vetiver (yay!). Alex had never heard of vetiver, which boggled my mind. I guess we’re in our own little perfume bubble.

My father has some interviews lined up with Johns Hopkins and the NIH for targeted immunotherapy treatments that might serve as an alternative or complement to chemotherapy! In theory, this would dramatically reduce side effects. Any tips on what to think about as he tries to decide which course of treatment to follow? (Assuming he’s accepted into both trials.)

if he has a tumor, which reacts to immunotherapy, then he should go for it. Quality of life is much better than with chemo and the results can be just as good. Chemo can always be given as a second-line therapy

Each case is different, of course, but my MIL has been doing combo chemotherapy and immunotherapy for lung cancer for several years. At her age (89) the goal isn’t a cure, it’s to keep the tumor size in check, and keep it from spreading. When the tumor grows too much, she does chemo to knock the size back down (about once a year), and in between it’s immunotherapy. The immunotherapy has very few side effects, much easier to tolerate. So far so good.

    Greetings from relatively mild Portland!

Am in Aromatics Elixir, big sprays of it that I walked through. Such a change from the super close to skin scents I have been trying these past few weeks.

Not on theme in 34 St. Germain. It reminds me – in a good way – of all the perfume samples in magainzes I smelled when I have in my teens – that perfume-y cardboard note. Mind you, I’m getting over a cold and my sense of smell is seriously blunted!
This is also a shout-out to the freebiemeet and just the general generosity of so many, many people here: a lot of the scents I’ve come to really enjoy over the past year and half have been serendipitous (had to look that spelling up!) discoveries by way of samples that were tucked in with swaps or splits or in freebiemeet packages. Thank you, all!

I always smell cardboard when I test perfumes on store blotters. I am sure the blotter interfers with the experience and yet some critics etc. seem able to circumnavigate that and still write reviews based on blotter tests. I don’t really understand how. I need the perfume on my skin.

I don’t necessarily smell cardboard on blotters, but I fully agree with you that a review should be done on skin if one intends to wear the perfume on skin.

I like fresh cherries, i like cherry jam, i like ‘Limburgse vlaai’ with cherries.
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlaai

But I am not fond of cherry in beverages, or in my perfume.
I will look in my sample sea for perfume with a cherry note, but I doubt I will be able to participate in the cp this week.

Sotd = Nankun kodo (sultan pasha attars)

……and after a 6-month-no-buy-period, I splurged on a bottle of Rahele. * Happy dance * I am really happy with it!

    For the Dutch NST’ers:
Skins has some Aedes dV full bottles and Frederic Malle travel sprays for sale (50% off, darn that is a good deal for those brands…no affiliation by the way). Sale items ship to Netherlands only.

I was very tempted. In the end i decided to not order anything and save my money for a real love/want.

Its not the most outspoken of most famous perfume of the brand, but it is the one that touched me the most. The cardemom, the osmanthus, the oakmoss…. swoon.

I think I like it better in the cold. Last time I wore it, it was warm out and it smelled kind of ammonia-harsh. Didn’t do that today, thankfully. It’s not exciting, but there’s something uplifting about it to me.

Lillyjo, you’ll probably never see this, but YES, I remember. It’s sung to the tune of On Top of Old Smoky, and the first few lines are:

            On top of spaghetti,
            All covered with cheese,
            I lost my poor meatball
            When somebody sneezed.
            It rolled off the table
            And onto the floor …

And I’m afraid that’s all I can remember at the moment. :)

Do you have any mainstream / mall / big brand rose perfumes you could recommend? I am always looking for a rose perfume. I don’t have any and it’s one perfume type I seldom risk blind buying.

A nick Goutal makes some rose scents. I’m not sure what is in production right now or if you consider AG to be mainstream, but it is a brand available in department stores in some malls. Jo Malone likewise is one of the more widely distributed niche brands and has a couple of rose scents. You might try JM Red Roses or AG Rose Absolue or AG Rose Splendide. For mainstream you might try YSL Paris or Ester Lauder Beautiful. I would definitely sniff first. I can’t recommend that anyone buy blind. I find that I am rather picky about rose scents.

I have a sample of Lost Cherry I’m saving for Friday, but otherwise, no cherries! In fact, there’s a total lack of non-citrus fruits in my collection, samples included. That would be fine except for the fact that I am craving fruit scents now, perhaps by power of suggestion?

Santal Carmin today. It’s ok. It feels like it’s trying to be Tam Dao edp but failing at being interesting.

I don’t have any cherry, except for a possible sample of Encens Jinhae kicking around somewhere… I’ll look for it for Friday.

Today is the need for cozy beauty, so some spritzes of Orchidée Vanille will do.

We said goodbye to our kitty Penny yesterday. We’d had an appointment for Monday but balked at the last minute. Just didn’t seem time and didn’t feel right. So, we delayed 24 hours. And it was time. I held her in my arms.

I hope you don’t mind a brief remembrance… We got her in November 2001. We had needed a weekend away from NYC, so we went up to the Finger Lakes. We did a day excursion to Niagara Falls and stopped in a rest stop on the way back to our B&B. I noticed an orange kitty crouched on the lawn as we went in. When I came out, I knelt and called to her. She trotted over and let me pick her right up. I put her in my husband’s arms in the car and we called the # on her collar (a Denver #). Left a message. Waited. No call, so we drove back to the B&B (with a brief WalMart stop) and got permission to bring her in. She spent the night curled in the bathroom sink. We drove her back with us the next morning and she’s been with us ever since, including a move to CA and then back to NYC. Just so grateful we had her as long as we did. The most fearless and friendliest cat one could ever have.

I’m in Felanilla today, and loving it. Finally finished packing last night for the flight to CA today. I am seriously high maintenance, y’all. I like all the comforts of home, evidently, and I have 37 pounds of suitcase to prove it. Gah!

We’re big packers too. Funny: when we went to Italy for a month, hubs and I each packed one big rolling duffle, 45 pounds apiece. When we checked in at SFO, the agent was amazed that that was all we were taking for a month. Everywhere we went in Italy, the locals were amazed that we had SO MUCH STUFF for a month. Different standards apparently…

It seems bad manners to say that yesterday I went to the beach and played in the waves with the dogs to cool off. It’s not exceptionally hot here but hot for us…most people who live here seem to favour colder weather and complain a bit ( me included) when it gets above 25C. Last night I couldn’t sleep so dragged a mattress outside and slept under the stars. So beautiful and should sleep outside more often.
We have cherries in our fruit bowl and I am in a Rahat Loukhoum perfume vortex. It’s a bit much for today, need to crank the volume down. Might switch to Monsieur Li after brekkie.

I’m in Malle Portrait of a Lady, a perfume I’d remembered as a bit fruity, and so it is, but no cherries. It’s got raspberries and black currants. So I’m doing a kind of spin on the cherry project. Don’t like this one much, but I’m off to get a haircut soon and she’ll apply all kinds of soaps and conditioners and balms and so on and it’ll bury the perfume smells.

Solinotes Grenade: sweet (citrus/blackberry), tart (pomegranate), white musk.

Solinotes Tiare: SUPER SWEET coconut, white florals, musk; caramel dry-down.

OOps and I realize now that that came out all wrong because i didn’t read that you are offering them up! I did not mean to say that they are “cheap” freebies what I meant to say was that they are highly affordable given today’s prices for perfumes which is why I was eyeballing them a while back and happy to see a company selling niche at a nice price. I thought you were wearing them today , hence your mini review, which I DO appreciate….sorry!!!!

Switched over to cherry blossom rather than cherry today with Olympic Orchids Sakura. Probably my favorite cherry blossom perfume. Full disclosure I used to work for them but don’t any longer and wouldn’t wear the perfume if I didn’t really like it. I’ve got one other cb perfume lined up for tomorrow.

I also realized today that I have two more perfumes with cherry or cherry blossom perfumes than I originally thought of – Sweet Anthem Petra, which has an amazing cherry chapstick note that I love and Sweet Anthem Lolita that has a cherry blossom note. I wish I’d bought Petra in liquid form before Meredith sold three business a few years ago. I only have it in the solid.

That must have been so much fun working for Ellen! Is Sakura a straight up cherry blossom? Only OO I ever had and wore was Olympic Amber which I thought was fantastic..thunked that bottle.

I realized that there are two cherries floating around in my house…Escada’s Cherries in the Air and Plur Hepcat (which pairs cherry with tobacco and has a boozy vibe so it could work in tomorrow’s bitter cold) but I am still not sure I am in the mood to wear one or both.

On board the delayed AMS-AGP return flight and looks like another day when I get to bed at 01:00 – and I truly am too old for this! Mind you, last night was self-inflicted as I was following the Brexit news (Not a topic for NST thank goodness. In unrelated news, I note the CP involves picking cherries).

Yesterday I was in Parfumerie Générale “Isparta” and today in Nobile 1942 “Malia”. Both very sweet for my tastes, so I can’t be bothered listing the notes other than Malia is supposedly Osmanthus (by way of Haribo if you ask me).

I located some after bath spray named Very Cherry in my collection and put that on this morning. It was very inexpensive (brand is Time Out, which I believe is from Sears) and it is surprisingly pleasant, if a person likes the cherry note. It’s not sweet (no cherry cough syrup) and it lingers a while.

Later, I will put on something with amber (likely one of the new DS and Durgas) to keep me warm. I’m in the part of the US experiencing the polar vortex and last night the temperature was -27. Right now it’s about -15. Week-end should be a lot better, with temps in the + thirties.

Absolutely horrible weather here today. I experienced a “snow squall” for the first time I can ever recall. What a nasty bit of business that was! It apparently contributed to a massive accident on a busy highway over in PA… 27 cars involved. Much better weather is in the forecast, but it’s going to be a couple of ugly days beforehand.

It was the sudden onset of that wintry blast which came as a shock to me. If I had to go anywhere after that, I would have reconsidered my plans, too.

My husband warned me about the the snow squalls today since I had to drive for a couple hours…I got lucky and missed it, so have still never seen one that I know of.

Sunny and pleasant here in San Diego, sending sympathies to those in the deep freeze. I wore a bit of DSH Become the Shaman, a palo santo scent.

Wearing Lolita Lempicka today. It is just a pleasure to wear and I smell cherries! I think maybe Fleur Defendue tomorrow! These seem to be the only two fragrances in my collection with a cherry note.

I wore Eau des Merveilles yesterday and Hiris today. Guess I’m in an Hermes mood.

I hope everyone in the path of the polar vortex is warm and comfortable. Stay safe!

Wearing a couple dabs of LPRN tonight. I got this tiny mini with some Sephora points awhile ago; at least the bottle is cute! I should try to use it up this week.

Hope everyone is staying as warm and safe as possible.
