Wednesday scent of the day 1/16

Posted by Robin on 16 January 2019 280 Comments

Hump Day and National Religious Freedom Day or National Nothing Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: partial credit for Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black.

Reminder: on 1/18, wear a fragrance by Eau d'Italie, Etat Libre d'Orange, Escentric Molecules or Etro, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter E.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Elizabeth and James Have A Nice Day bag is from early 2018 (I think) and long since sold out.

Like BobH, I’m in ELDO Putain des Palaces, which given its name, is surprisingly work appropriate. It wears pretty close to the skin on me and is a pleasant powdery perfume. Granted I dabbed from one of the 10ml minis they used to sell as a big set. Spraying it could be another story…

Thanks for the support yesterday on my challenging work day. As long as more requests aren’t thrown at me today, I feel like I’ve got a better handle on things today.

I had a bottle of PdP and thought it quite an innocent smelling perfume. Even sprayed it’s not big and still very work appropriate. You smell wonderful and I hope your workday is better today. ?

Vierges et Toreros, another quirky number from ELDO.

I can see why it’s marketed as a masculine scent (although, of course, a woman can wear it too). It does not smell much of tuberose to me, at least not of that familiar heady tuberose. What I smell is a spicy rubber/camphor composition which reminds me a little of Body Kouros. It’s a fun scent to test, but I do not think it will stay in wardrobe.

The idea of National Nothing Day is hilarious: “To provide Americans with one National day when they can just sit without celebrating, observing or honoring anything.” Every day can be a nothing day. :D

I think that was one of the few ELdOs I had to scrub along with Je Suis Un Homme and Antiheros (that was the worst, it just turned into vinegar on my arm). You make it sound rather good. Maybe I should retest it…

Yeah we returned sunday evening. Btw This trip we took the train (Eurostar), and of course lots of Brexit jokes were made. ;) sorry guys, but without getting political, I think we can all agree its a big mess right?

By train is still a hustle though We had to go through security checks. And of course UK is not a Schengen country, so we had to do pass passport control as well.
But passport checks are all automated and leading to people struggling with machines haha. Not a funny thing to do if you are claustrophobic I guess….you are being held for a few seconds with gates closed both behind AND in front of you.

One of my souvenirs I bought at Minamoto Kitchoan…white peach mocha (small rice cakes coated in peach sugary stuff). I’ll post it on Insta because the packaging is so cute. And its delicious. Not very British though.
But I drank pints in pubs, ahem half pints. Maybe two half pints per evening. And one gin tonic…. Sorry I just cant hold my liquor and therefore cannot handle UK pub culture. ?

Though I dont think I will ever wear it to work…

But today I wore it while running errands and shopping for a new pair of pants. Most pants I found had a high waistline and were slightly baggy on the hips and bum. I am a short person and it looks weird on me. So I ended up buying a skirt hahaha

SOTD is Black Orchid. I’m alone at work for the next two hours, surely by then it’ll be work appropriate? :D

Finally saw If Beale Street Could Talk last night. I haven’t read the novel, but I thought the film was beautiful. It deserves so much more attention than it’s getting, especially compared to some of the…not so great work that’s making the rounds at these award shows. And the protagonist works at a perfume counter, which isn’t a huge part of it, but there is a really affecting scene that takes place there.

I also really enjoyed that film and posted the same thing about the perfume counter scene a couple if weeks ago! That scene was loaded from so many angles: race, gender, class, etc. And I think Black Orchid needs a good 24 hours before it’s work appropriate ? Reek on ??

Likewise! It doesn’t ever get hot enough here to justify neglecting “winter” scents entirely in the summer, but Black Orchid definitely moves to the back of the cabinet.

Where I love it is the reverse—it never gets cold enough to neglect “summer” scents altogether, but there are many scents I can only wear in the winter.

National Nothing Day has real appeal to me! I endorse this fully and completely….

Sampling DS & Durga Amber Teutonic today…..this stuff is GOOD. This is a gorgeous, rich and spicy amber, pine, fir, and opoponax blend of warm cozy goodness. LOVE IT! Why must it be soooooo expensive? On the perpetual wishlist it goes….. :)

Haha thanks! I’m off to the library and people don’t ever seem to get offended by AS. I think because it can be misread as amber essential oil or even a nice lotion.

I was working with a massage client in close quarters the other day and realized with horror that I was smelling stale Salome on myself. There must have been some leftover on my shirt. That one is pretty tenacious.

I had a rough and sad evening yesterday. I went to feed a cat colony I help care for and discovered one of the cats there had died- this right after witnessing someone fall right near there and having to wait a 1/2 hour for EMS to arrive! Pretty disgraceful. She was mostly ok, but did something nasty to her shoulder. Hope she’s ok now.
I cried a bunch about the cat and placed her body in the river near the colony since she liked to hang out on the shore rocks. This feral cat business can be really heartbreaking sometimes ? But we did find 1 of the friendlier cats a permanent home with another cat and are told she’s doing ok- still afraid of the people but likes hanging with their other cat ?
I needed something bright and uplifting so went with a spritz of Eau de Magnolia for a grey, cold day.

Totally off project with Amouage Journey Woman. I love this mix of apricot, honey and suede. I sometimes get a whiff of fairly animalic notes in this, and then get anxious about being a little too musky to be in public. But, I tend to apply with a restrained hand, so hopefully I’m not wafting too strongly.

    Happy Nothing Day, everybody.

Let’s try this again but in the right place…

Like BobH, I’m in ELDO Putain des Palaces, which given its name, is surprisingly work appropriate. It wears pretty close to the skin on me and is a pleasant powdery perfume. Granted I dabbed from one of the 10ml minis they used to sell as a big set. Spraying it could be another story…

Thanks for the support yesterday on my challenging work day. As long as more requests aren’t thrown at me today, I feel like I’ve got a better handle on things today.

    SOTD = Mugler Angel Muse

… because lillyjo mentioned it on Monday. My “a few spritzes” go a long way = ~2.5 to 3. For those who do wear Muse, how many spritzes do you use?

    • SmokeyToes says:

It depends, if it’s Hermes Eau Pamplemousse Rose, five spritzes. If it’s Fendi or Angel, one spritz and walk through the mist.

Pretty much the same three I generally do – chest, back of neck, one arm and I tap my arms together. Regular Angel gets dabbed, lighter scents get more sprays on the same places. If I’m home for the day it all changes, lots of sprays of everything. I like to WAFT ?

Parfums de Nicolai Odalisque, thanks to the INCREDIBLE generosity of NSTer 50_Roses. I smelled this for the first time over a decade ago, when I bought a mixed sample pack of niche samples on ebay. This was right after I discovered MUA and NST, and that sample pack was pure treasure to me and the start of my obsession. It included a few PdNs (Odalisque, Eau d’ete, and some others), Parfumerie Generales, and other stuff you find on Luckyscent. Since I lived in a small town in Florida, I would *never* get to try these in person. I remember sitting on the couch and taking out each sample and carefully showing them to my cousin when she visited, like I was taking out precious jewels.

50_Roses, this MADE MY YEAR. Thank you! I smell amazing.

There’s a big oak tree in the cemetery and I found myself looking at the acorns that have begun to appear on it. I’ve never paid any attention to the way acorns grow so it was fascinating ( to me) . It seems that the ‘cap’ develops first and once that is established the smooth acorn part takes off. The rosehips are very big and plump now. I tried the new JM Bronze Wood and Leather when I was away at the weekend ( also fleur de peau and tempo). It reminded me of the English Oak and hazlenut perfume but with a rather sour , almost vetiver addition. I wouldn’t describe it as a leather scent…but once again I didn’t get to spray the sample on my skin myself, that was left to the assistant…so maybe I am mistaken. Wearing YS Uzac Immortal Beloved , a rum and plum and passionfruit blend .

The JM Bronze Wood and Leather was quite smoky on me. It was ok, but I think I’d rather smell it on my husband than myself.

The nihilist in me is digging “National Nothing Day!”

But I’m wearing something and it’s my newest love. One spritz on skin and I’m done in. To think I’ve had this tiny little spritzer in my sample stash for who knows how long and have never experienced it…! I think it’s from a kind NSTer, too!

DSH Chinchilla for the win! . If this is discontinued, I may cry.

Gosh, I’m probably the wrong person to ask since I don’t analyze anything about perfume. I’m pretty simple; don’t like, like, love. It’s a rounded soft fuzzy floral animal. That’s the best I can do, sorry. I wouldn’t say it’s dirty or funky, and to me perfectly acceptable to wear anywhere. Feminine and comforting. I’m sure others who know more than can offer some ideas as far as comparison to other scents. Anyone have any ideas…?

I sampled it over a year ago, but I think it reminded me of a cross between Kiehl’s Musk and MFK Absolue pour le Soir. Fuzzy, animalic musk? Name suits it, though I’ve never smelled a chinchilla. Yet.

Never smelled a (real) chinchilla either. I have smelled Keihls Musk and APLS, but I don’t get any florals from either of those. I do get beautiful floral notes from Chinchilla, which to me makes it more “ladylike” than either the Keihls or the MFK. But I also don’t find Musc Tonkin or Salomé funky. I think I have a very high tolerance for funk?

Ok thanks you all! ? I have a bottle of Kiehl’s musk I’ll spritz. “Ladylike” sounds like it’ll work for me. I like Salome also.

Wearing ELDO Bijou Romantique. Used the whole sample! Thunk! A pretty and easily worn/forgotten floral vanilla. I like jammy roses and spicy roses but with the exception of Tocade, I will pass on vanilla centric florals.

SOTD is ELDO Noel au Balcon. I became infatuated with it from a little sample and bought a big bottle, but then went off it. It’s worth giving it another try. I thought I had found my sought-after orange-clove pomander scent. Nice orange and spices in the start of this, but I’m afraid the honey takes over and it becomes too sweetly fruity. I just don’t care much for strong honey scents (with the exception of Moth, for some reason).

    Hey California peeps!!!

I will be in Berkeley/SF/LA in a couple of weeks to see my daughter, and to sightsee. She works odd hours, so I don’t know what my schedule will be like.
I’ll be in Berkeley/SF from 1/31 – 2/3. I’ll be visiting the Aftelier fragrance museum on Saturday, 2/2, if anyone would like to go with me. My cousin will be going as well.
I’ll be in LA from 2/4 – 2/7. If anyone is interested in meeting up for coffee or a bit of shopping, I’d love to hear from you!

Also, if anyone has suggestions for great, but reasonable places to eat in Berkeley/San Francisco/LA, I’d be most grateful. Your favorite perfume/shopping/sightseeing suggestions would also be welcome. – – will definitely be going to ScentBar – – ?

I was just reading about a perfumery in LA called Orris Perfumery and looks like it’s not terribly far from Scent Bar. Chiming in late with Jasmin et Cigarette. Tonight it’s more jasmine, less smoke.

Going through lots of transition at work as part of our company was sold to new owners. We have jobs for at least another year, but all the changes and transition now on top of our usual workload has been really challenging the last few weeks to say the least.

At least this Friday a group of us are getting together with a former co-worker for her birthday! That will be fun!
