Thursday scent of the day 1/3

Posted by Robin on 3 January 2019 288 Comments

Almost-Friday, Chocolate-Covered Cherry Day, the 10th day of Christmas (lords a-leaping), and John Ronald Reuel Tolkien's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Prada Candy, because Lucasai said yesterday it was a match for Living Coral. I'm not sure.

Reminder: on 1/4, wear a fragrance to match Living Coral, Pantone's color of the year for 2019 (see above).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m wearing Serge lutens louve today which I got in the skyscraper bottle for Christmas. It does everything I want as a comforting winter scent – strong voluptuous sillage and excellent longevity yet smooth and calming.

This is good to hear, I only have a small amount left, will want to replace it when it runs out.

I’m in Séville à l’Aube today, and it just lifts my spirits. I need it too, since the drains at work are backing up. I for one would not mind getting back into bed if the situation doesn’t improve. 😉

That’s true. I had to move out of an apartment a few years ago because every time someone was inconsiderate with their garbage disposal usage, my sink would fill up. It was unpleasant.

I think tomorrow I will wear American Perfumer Colorado. I got a sample of this with my bottle of Desert Flower. From my initial testing, I got an impression of rugged canyons, campfires, glowing embers, with just a tinge of something meaty or chewy (perhaps the remnants of the meal that was recently cooked over the campfire). I am sure Living Coral fits in there somewhere.

Right now I am testing two or my recent sample acquisitions. On my left arm is Winter, and on the right is Gardener’s Glove. I am not really loving either one. Winter is not as sharp and prickly as many coniferous scents, due to the sweetness of the lavender absolute. It does, however, give me a little of that icepick-to-the-sinuses effect, so it is a no go for me. I would enjoy smelling this on someone else, though. This one will join Winter Nights in the giveaway pile.

Gardener’s Glove starts our really well. My first impression was indeed of well-worn leather, then after a while the floral notes emerged. Up to this point it was really lovely. A couple of hours in, however, there is an acrid bitter note that I do not like at all, and which tends to give me a bit of a headache if I lean in to sniff at close range. The offending note seems to be fairly short-lived, but I would have a hard time trying to actually wear (rather than test) this one, for fear that the note in question might stick around too long. So far, my favorite of the St. Clair scents has been Casablanca, which is very pretty, but is only a like, not a love.

Yeah, all of the Saint Clairs do something weird on me and so don’t quite work. Ah well.

I guess it’s not just me then. St. Clair has been getting a lot of love here lately, and I do admire indie perfumers who put real thought into their craft and do something different or distinctive. They just don’t work well for me. Frost and First Cut really went wrong on my skin, and were definitely scrubbers. Gardener’s Glove would be really nice if it weren’t for that one note. Casablanca doesn’t do anything weird on me, it just didn’t bowl me over. I get mostly orange blossom, which is nice, but nothing spectacular. I think I will try it as a late evening/bedtime scent. I often find that perfumes with dominant notes of orange blossom or linden tend to help me sleep, and I have a few perfumes I keep for just that purpose.

I find them all (except Casablanca which I haven’t tried) to have a bit of a mosquito repellent note, but I like it!

I just ordered 4 atomizer samples in 2 separate orders so as not to exceed the maximum for free shipping (eventhough samples are shipped free, the ordering system software is not smart enough to adjust to just a samples order that exceeds a free shipping threshold).

Nippy here this morning, 6C, which is cold for southern California. Wearing Attrape-Coeur. It’s an older bottle and the colour has shifted to match the lighter coral. I’m worried it is oxydizing so I am hoping to finish it this year.

Yes, it smells a bit more concentrated and rich, which is why I want to focus on finishing it soon, before it tips into something perhaps less pleasant. I almost never get to wear a sweater and boots in San Diego, so today will be a nice day for that.

I don’t know that I’ll find the right perfume to match Living Coral, so I match the description that talks about being lively, playful, and social. We’ll see.

Today I’m in too many sprays of Diptyque Essences Incensees Rose de Mai. I’m very tired this morning after my boyfriend had a coughing fit in the middle of the night (he’s fine) plus I have an enormous amount of sinus pressure. Rose de Mai is a sweet and sour honeyed rose with musk. It actually reminds me a lot of NR EDP. It feels like it’s wearing me today…

I’d like to give away my decant to someone in the US. I’ll also send you some random samples. I’ll send to the first person that comments here that they want it and will let you know my email address to work out the details.

        Hey, thank you!

Um, we shall see. The interview is literally out of the blue and is from a contact from a friend of a friend in LA County water system- somehow, she read a paper I wrote on limnology almost 19 (!) years ago and connected my name, found out what I was presently doing and contacted me. It’s odd, to say the least.

The job would require relocation- and the pay, while generous, would see me take a step down in lifestyle that I have currently (and what I have now is not lavish.) So we shall see.

I’m wearing a fragrance from an indie bath/body brand called Fortune Cookie Soap. It’s named The Holy Grail Of Christmas Gifts from their collection inspired by A Christmas Story (what? we’re still in the twelve days, right??) and they describe it as “sparkling champagne, velvet musk, almond creme, lavender, and pine”.

It’s those last two notes that stand out the most for me with this. I smell like a very nice Christmas tree, and since we took ours down yesterday, that’s just what I wanted. I’ll move on tomorrow, I promise!

Yes, indeed, we are still in the 12 days of Christmas. They don’t end until Epiphany on January 6. I makes me sad that town took down the Christmas lights already (the city displays; some houses do still have lights up). I always enjoy seeing lights and decorations still up for a while after Dec 25.

Back at work today and actually happy about it. Even if I didn’t miss work, I did miss the routine. Although lounging around with a puppy was fun. My fiance took him to work with him because he isn’t ready to be home alone yet we don’t think.

Based on Pantone’s [ridiculous] description of Living Color, I think I’m on point in Twilly today. Playful, social, blah, blah, blah… Sorry if I sound curmudgeonly, but I find what they wrote about the color and its meaning to be silly and, yes, irritating. “In reaction to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life, we are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy.” Where’s the evidence of that? One of the most common commercials I saw this past Christmas was for the Oculus virtual reality headsets. Immersive, yes. Authentic connection and intimacy, I think not.

Reminds me of some of the over-the-top nonsensical marketing of new fragrances. You have to wonder if there isn’t someone whose job it is to approve copy by saying, “yep, this is meaningless blather but it sounds fabulous.”

    Rant over.

I’m curmudgeonly with you. First we slaughter, them we memorialize. So we get cars named Cougar, Impala, etc… we live on Turning Leaf Road or Big Cypress Street after we have cut down all the trees. Now, coral reefs are on the decline, so we have a Pantone Color….?

I think it’s the color itself. What they wrote is truly a work of art. “An animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge”

Agree with your rant! I just took a look at Pantone’s description… what a crock! I think this shade is in the same vein as the ubiquitous millennial pink that doesn’t seem to want to go away EVER. It will likely appeal to those who like THAT colour – which I think looks like raw chicken. Hmmmm… this new one is starting to make me think of smoked salmon… ?

SOTD DSH’s Souvenir de Malmaison. Heavier with incense, not so much clove as the Floris Malmaison, but a wonderful winter floral perfume. It seems to vacillate between rose and carnation, back and forth, with hints of other petals, as time goes on. My favorite of hers. Well worth a sample if you haven’t sniffed it. I got the 2 ml rollerball sample, and I will definitely trade up when this is gone.

It’s really very pretty and I found a travel spray at Neiman Marcus for $35 which is practically free in perfum math.

SOTD = Dior Poison Girl Unexpected

I am back home from 6 fabulous days in Portugal. I would normally say Lisbon, but we were also out and about in Sintra and Cascais! I was at the western-most tip of Europe Cabo de Roca. Lisbon itself is so vibrant, cosmopolitan and welcoming. I have been posting on Instagram but I’m not done yet. I like to do themes and I have many pictures to go through.

Perfume-wise, I came home with a FB of Herve Gambs Hotel Particulier and travel sizes of Profumum Roma Ichnusa and Dior Poison Girl Unexpected.

I have a lot of catching up to do, packages to mail, errands to run and 2 more holiday-related events to attend this weekend. Back to work on Monday so making the most of my remaining days off!

      And also this:

      https://nstperfume.com/2018/11/21/the-daily-lemming-539/

Sadly, I had to empty out the box of matches as I do not want to run the risk of being snagged for carrying a prohibited item.

By the way, if you have plans to travel outside of the U.S. several times in the next few years, it is really worth it to sign up for Global Entry. While TSA Pre is a nice perk (you go on a separate, usually shorter security line, but you are not guaranteed this privilege every time you fly — people don’t believe me on this but I read the fine print), going through U.S. Customs is its most advantageous feature. Coming home, the line for non Global Entry was hundreds of people long while the Global Entry line only had a few people. Be sure to apply way ahead as it will take several months from application to getting it. Mine took about 3 months overall.

I’m dreading having to get my passport replaced, which I need to do before summer. I wonder if the Government shut down affects the office of vital statistics? I have to get a replacement birth certificate so I can get a replacement passport I imagine… never heard of global entry, but it sounds very worthwhile, just to avoid the agro.

Most essential operations are running. In fact, I think most people are working without pay or are furloughed without pay. So, you should be able to get a passport.

Birth certificates should be unaffected, since those are not federal. I got my certified one pretty quickly from California (by quickly I mean weeks…) I needed it to get a replacement SS card. Need to check to see if the SS offfice is closed. Probably is.

Ha! Funny when you say “weeks.” Ca lags behind EVERY state for RN licensure by endorsement- it took 5 MONTHS! And, they did everything via snail-mail! Crazy! ? I didn’t think the birth certificate would be an issue, I was concerned about the US Passport taking who know how long…

I took the dog to the vet today (annual visit) and to get his nails trimmed at the groomers and he has collapsed on the rug, snoring loudly. He has arthritis and standing for any length of time tires him out and makes him hurt. The treatment room was small and I perfumed it in Champagne de Bois.

I haven’t sampled M since last year. If I am remembering correctly, it was like a tonka sueded leather with a slight dirty hair vibe. At least on me. I really liked it but wouldn’t have many places to wear it.

Not sure I can place my finger on a specific scent except maybe MDCI Fete Persanes? But a spiced amber-I actually don’t get a ton of leather from it. But a lot of ambery, spicy orientals in the niche world start to smell the same to me after a while. People compare it to Roja’s own Fetish, which I haven’t smelled (he did M also and I find a lot of his perfumes are more opulent riffs on other scents).

Bois d´Argent again, but this time with one spritz of Marlou 50ml D´Ambiguité as a base. This has skanked up the very tame Dior. Just wondered, that nobody at work complained, as i get a really soiled underwear note with the Marlou…..

I’m wearing Parfum Sacré again. The somewhat spicy rose-orange might make it count for the CP. At any rate, it’s good for cold weather. Yesterday afternoon I tried two different things, pursuing the red theme. One was CDG Red series, Harissa; but I really didn’t like that one, spice, orange, pepper–seemed too harsh. The other was CDG Rhubarb Sherbet. A bit too tangy and sour on me. I am now thinking maybe something more tropical would be good to wear in association with a bright coral color. Mom is having her first day at the senior activity center today. I hope it goes all right. She went willingly, though she still thinks she’s being sent to the “babysitter” place. They have lots of programs and activities there, and it aims at stimulation, so I really don’t think of it as babysitting or day care. It’s a way for us each to have time and interests of our own. After living on my own for about 15 years it’s pretty difficult to adjust to sudden constant companionship.

I’m wearing Gallivant Istanbul – nice winter scent. I’m keen to try the new Tokyo release.

I want to give some props to Andy Tauer for excellent customer service: in my order for Wowilla I left a comment saying that the atomizer for my Vanilla Flash doesn’t work and asked if he could send a replacement spray nozzle. He wrote back saying he sent me a new bottle of Vanilla Flash – i was so surprised and impressed! Service like this makes me extra likely to buy fragrances I already like but might not necessarily pull the trigger on.

I tried Tokyo, and just didn’t care for it. Are you in the USA? I’d be happy to send you my sample.

Thank you that’s awfully kind! There is a store not too far from me that carries the line and i am always looking for an excuse to go so I will pass – but really appreciate the offer

No problem! Have fun browsing and sniffing.

If anyone in the CONUS or Canada would like a sample of Tokyo, shoot me an e-mail at payne underscore cm at the yahoo.

Andy’s customer service is top-notch! One of my orders got held up somewhere and he cared enough to write back and tracked the package along with me and also offered to send a replacement package if it did not arrive by a certain date (I got it before that date).

Good to know! I ordered a couple things from his website on Dec 22 but it hasn’t shipped yet. Foolishly I didn’t set up an account but rather checked out as a guest, so I can’t review the status.

It may be held up with other orders ahead of mine being processed, plus it was over Christmas as well. It’s not like I’m going to run out of anything soon..

Still not matching the Pantone Living Coral today. I have an idea for tomorrow that came as an “Aha!” moment, though… will have to sniff it and see if it checks out.

SOTD = Lancome Cuir de Lancome, from the sample stash. Not even close to Living Coral! But it smells so, so good! I’m not even sure I have ever been able to assign a color to it. Some scents suggest a color to me quite easily. Others, not so much.

I think I’m biased by the juice color, but I think it fits the ambery orange of the perfume. Anyway, you smell fantabulous!

I’m at a loss for tomorrow but may copy LizzieB’s Twilly which I think fits it well…or I may wear one which is so not a winter scent!

Wearing my Bvlgari Omnia Coral lotion again tonight. When I got my lotion, I thought it was the perfume, mostly because it wasn’t that cheap (even though I bought it at Winners). Maybe its because its “scintillating lotion”, not sure what that means, but I paid a premium for it.

I got a compliment today in my deep coral sweater from a co-worker; she said ‘that’s your color’. Made my day!

I would look dead in that color, lucky you, you’re set for the year 🙂
