Thursday scent of the day 12/27

Posted by Robin on 27 December 2018 341 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy Fruitcake Day! It's also the third day of Christmas (that would be French Hens), depending on how you count, and the second day of Kwanzaa, and there are 4 days left until the end of 2018. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Hermès Myrrhe Églantine.

Reminder: on 12/28 we're doing Best of 2018...wear one of your favorite fragrance releases of 2018.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Rose "Grace" [cropped] by Bernard Spragg. NZ at flickr; public domain. The Grace rose was bred by David Austin, who passed away last week at the age of 92.

Memo Tiger’s Nest, one of my favorite 2018 releases. Delicious spicy amber/incense scent. Too bad it is so pricey. I put it about 3-4 hours ago and still get a lovely dry-down.

Scent twins! I dumped about half a sample vial of this on me this morning, and as you say, am basking in ambery, incensy goodness with occasional whiffs of floral lightness over the whole thing. I love this, and also as you say, wince at the price.

I love this one too! Just got the shipping notice my bottle is on the way from First in Fragrance in Germany. It will be here New Year’s eve! It is cheaper on their website than in the US, plus they had a 15% off coupon code, which made it a bit more reasonable.

        Congratulations! I am jealous.
I finished my sample today, and though I won’t get the FB, I’ll probably end up buying a small decant.

PPC Lemon Liada, one of the best blind buys I have ever made. It is bright and cheerful, a perfect antidote for this gloomy, rainy day.

I really adore it. Got this bottle off eBay a few years ago and thought that it had spoiled. I recently made up my mind that it was pointless to keep a spoiled bottle and was about to get rid of it when I thought I might as well spray it in the air a few times and then retest it. It was just the bit in the sprayer that had turned, the rest of the bottle is fine. I still want to try some of the other old Ricci’s like Farouche and Capricci.

Oh yes! Farouche! I forgot about that one!

Whenever I receive an older bottle I always do 5-10 sprays in the air just to clear out the old stuff. It always works :)

Wearing a bit from my decant of L’Artisan Iris Pallida. It’s much nicer than I remember. Maybe it’s the scarcity, but now I’m wishing that I had this instead of Jacinthe des Bois.

What do you think is the most similar scent? Maybe Bois d’Iris by VCA?

I don’t recall Iris Pallida having any sweetness. I also regret not buying it.

I’m in a far-from-recent release, Vol de Nuit extrait, because nothing else would do this morning. Also, I don’t think I even have anything released in 2018, although I suppose I should paw through the heap of untried samples to be sure.

I went through a phase where vintage classics were all I was interested in exploring. I have yet to go through a “what’s new in perfume” phase. :D

Yes, I’ve been crawling my way through the 80’s and 90’s classics since that’s what I tend to find around here. I get exhausted with niche since they’re so pricy. Some deserve the price, don’t get me wrong, but some don’t.

Diptyque Tempo. There’s is something going on in the opening of this one that I couldn’t put my finger on so I went back to Kevin’s review and it must be the camphorous note. Not liking that so much so I’ll see how the drydown goes…
Probably money saved. I already own a bottle of Fleur de Peau and really like that one.

Vintage Jil Sander No. 4 today, spicy and fruity but with a modern edge. The first few times I wore it I thought it was too close to Poison, but today it’s giving me a Byzance-with-fruit vibe. Glad I have it another chance!

You smell wonderful! I wore Byzance back in the day, and later Jil Sander No. 4, both monogamously (that was pre-rabbithole for me) so I probably should have noticed the similarity before now, but never did. I remember Byzance as quite a baroque scent, but it’s been a looooong time.

They’re still different but the heart of No. 4 smells like Byzance with preserves. I prefer Byzance but I love having both!

Forgive me, Donnatella, for I have sinned. I did break down and skipped over to Andy Tauer’s website and ordered Une Rose Vermielle. It may be a back up but I am almost out. I added a mini and a discovery set to. All to the tune of $152. Yes, I stopped at the bank and paid my cellphone bill before I went perfume shopping. Right now, I am in LADDM.

Wearing one of my Christmas gifts….Dolce and Gabbana Light Blue Italian Zest! This was on my wishlist, and Santa Mother-in-Law gifted me a large bottle. Definitely an all occasion grab and go scent that smells really fresh and crisp. This will be really great this summer.

In L’Artisan Fou d’Absinthe. I needed a good perfume “shot” this morning to face the news that I will be transfered to another office starting January 7. I will be there on regular basis for the next 3 to 4 months. Not a joke. I have heard that it is not easy to work there, but they have a couple of projects that are behind and my boss needs me to expedite things and make sure deadlines are met. Uff! I need to breathe deeply. Perhaps, my only complaint is that my commute will be much longer, but anyway it could be worse. I am glad that I have a job and I want to start 2019 with a positive attitude to bring positive vibes. I hope it works! ?

Sending positive thoughts. I’ve learned thst as far as work is concerned, saying very little and then only positive things, is the right way to go. In my personal life I sometimes do the short, intense wallow to get it over with!

Thank you for the compliment Lillyjo! ?.
Working fast under pressure is one of the things that I feel my bosses like about me. It is not going to be an easy task at the new place, but I will take your words that “it will work”. And the thought of Spring almost ready to arrive starting in January according to your math, is going to cheer me up! ?????. Hugs! ?

and I agree, extra work= extra pay = extra perfume if you so desire! (now I am curious as to which two are on the top of your list-LOL!!!)

I hope everything goes fine! I will miss my work and people here, since I will not have to come here at all, unless it is very necessary. Maybe a change of environment is refreshing and a good way to start the new year.

#1 bottle: a back up one of Masque Milano L’Attesa since the one I have is about to finish.

#2: I don’t know yet. If I had to choose today it will be Robert Piguet L’Insomnuit. I still have the empty vial on my desk and gosh! It smells amazing! But that option can always change.
Let’s see what the new year brings.

Agree with Lillyjo in that it sounds like they have confidence in you. Sounds like a shock, but hopefully you’ll get through it soon enough. I was pulled at a different job to cover another area that was wayyy less convenient, but aside from the commuting hassles, I actually enjoyed the change of scenery and different neighborhoods.

I have a big responsibility since those are critical projects and I appreciate the trust bosses have on me to expedite the whole process. I hope to meet the expectations and finish everything without much trouble.
I will be in Midwood in Brooklyn. Much longer commute and since I will be a couple of stations away from Brighton Beach I want to cheer up and think that I might take a walk by the ocean once in a while. Well, if the temps allow! Hope to enjoy it!

Yikes, from Queens, that’s far on public transportation. And funnily, the year I got pulled, it was to the Brooklyn team whose office is in Midwood, so I spent a lot of time there and around other neighborhoods (including Brighton!) in a car they rented for me. The hugely stressful part was the driving for me ( in winter) and spending a LOT of time looking for parking ? But I did take a few opportunities to walk the boardwalk by the ocean! I hope you’ll be able to sneak in a few walks and eat some good Russian food ?

            Wow! What a funny coincidence!
Parking there is a nightmare. Everytime we go to Midwood we prefer to take the train and leave the car in the office, especially if we know we have to face the rush hour. I am sure I will enjoy time in Brighton. This year I didn’t have the opportuniyy to go there in Summer time, so I am looking forward to some nice walks and good food. A positive thing about the relocation!

Well, I think I know what I’ll wear tomorrow! But for today, I’m in Roaring Radcliffe from Penhaligon’s. Nice enough but I never need a bottle. It’s a good vanilla, but there are plenty of other (cheaper) ones.

Not that I can smell myself much over the scents of whatever daily feast my mother is cooking. “We always eat so terribly when you come home,” she says accusatorily every time I come home, no matter how much I insist that there is no need for that.

Currently incredibly pissed off at American healthcare. I submitted an HSA receipt and it was denied with no cause, because our healthcare is run by stupid monkeys. Not the smart ones. The stupid ones. The number of HOURS of my life I have wasted on *#%#? healthcare over the past 1.5 years! AHHHH it makes me want to scream. The only way to avoid this *#$*#%& nonsense is to just not get sick. Or to be so wealthy that you don’t care. From all my bleeped out curse words, I think you can see how much this upsets me. And I’m one of the lucky ones! I have insurance through my job! And financial reserves to cover anything the insurance company is too much of a POS to cover!

Ok, thanks for letting me rant.

My tale of similar woe involved the incompetent customer service at a large bank. Who sat on something I had a local branch fax over last week based on the instructions they gave me. Some items were missing apparently, and I only found out because I called to check status yesterday. Absolutely spot-on Koyel.Us in the Medical environment are the ones who probably get the most frustrated and upset when we see, hear and experience injustice in our world. It’s all become just another cash-cow,with ridiculous regulations and new policies, and stupid people having to authorize critical healthcare decisions.Sometimes I feel I could go shake them in their chairs. But we still pitch up for work and do our bit as far as possible.

No, I also am more involved in the insurance end of things at my current job, so know what a frightfully messed up system we have I don’t entirely blame insurance companies, though. There is a lot of wasteful/unnecessary or even errant stuff that happens at hospitals and MDs offices and they bill for all of it. I had to have an expensive lab test done because they accidentally read someone else’s results and falsely thought they were mine (and it was out of whack) and they billed the insurance for a test I didn’t actually need.

You have a point that 100 % of the blame doesn’t lie with insurance companies. The issue is the entire system. Insurance companies are private businesses that are all about maximizing profits. It’s a lot like problems with the oppression of women in patriarchal societies: the problem is not just men; it’s the whole system.

I also recently got billed for a medical device that wasn’t mine! I contacted the medical device people and they said that they had received a form that I had signed. I asked them to send me the form and discovered it wasn’t my signature! It was some other person’s device with their signature, with my info stamped at the top! That issue I think is getting taken care of (and thankfully, unlike your case, hasn’t led to further unnecessary tests), but it’s still so frustrating.

    • flopper says:

One time, in the mail, I got someone’s lab bill. My address, different name. Sent it back with “no one with that name at this address” I wrote on the envelope. Was mailed the same thing several weeks later. I guess it was eventually sorted, but would think that would be a big HIPAA violation on the part of the lab.

I am about to shower using my Molten Brown Muddled Plum shower gel and then slather on the same scent body lotion, which my husband got me for Christmas. He was so funny, I was pretty sure he’d gotten it for me, because I saw a small travel-size MB thing fall out of a coat pocket. But he forgot about it, until he opened a small MB shower gel I’d gotten him. He ran back into the bathroom and presented it to me unwrapped.

I’m in l’ambre De Merveilles which I received from Santa this week. Anxiously awaiting a bottle of Costume National Homme I got for a song on a greymarket site and I used an amazon gift card to buy a bottle of hdp Tubereuse 3 animale that I found for a ridiculously low price with prime shipping. Honestly I think the price was a mistake lol!

    Hello all!

    1) Christmas was awesome! It was a Dew Drop Inn situation, and we have a lovely glazed ham, snacks, boozy icy eggnog slush, homemade cookies and Christmas cake, and maybe, just maybe, a little too much Champagne.

    2) I received and am wearing Fresh Cream Warm Cashmere.

    3) If you are near a Lush, and can stand shopping, go hit up BOGO sale!

Like Koyel, I’m getting ready to make a phone call over stupid monkey healthcare, although in my case, they are more like the flying monkeys from Wizard of Oz. I’ve sprayed 3 perfumes today trying to get it right. I finally sprayed Oud Bouquet to stop myself from doing that, lol. I think I’m just nervous about the call. We have rain for the next 2 days, then back to snow. December was kind to me in the precipitation department.

Sad to see David Austin has died recently. I have become more interested in roses since spending more time walking around the cemetery. The smell in the early morning as the dew begins to evaporate is really intoxicating. I will go to the gardens today and see if I can find the Grace rose featured. It should be in bloom. Keeping on the 2018 theme with snowdrop and white moss again with a dash of prada mimosa.

Needed a break from the heavy winter perfumes and went with Au Dela Narcisse today, which has some balsamic heft in the base, but is sunshiney bright as well. Matches the clear, cold day nicely. Back to work and dragging a bit. We got home pretty late last night and the drive was longer than going, but happy to sleep in my own bed with TOTAL thermostat control in my apt!!! My BILs house is always freezing and I literally had to sleep in my coat!

The one thing I smelled this year-not sure if it is totally new,but it’s new to my nose-is Molton Brown’s Rose Absolue Showergel.Wowza.It’s what Rose Jam showergel should have been, meaning I LOOOOOOOVED Rose Jam,but got strangely tired of the overtly sweetness of it.The Molton Brown I can see myself using much much more of.Lovely stuff,do try it!
Hope everyone is keeping warm up North!
Some days I wish I was living in a Nudist sanctuary…this heat is getting to me like seriously.
    We’ll never be happy weatherwise,huh!?Lol.
    Much Love!!
    ❤️✌??

The imp of the peverse helped me choose today. Given that I was in pottering about mode at home all day–sorting papers, reading–clearly I had to wear the sort of scent that is always reviewed in the opulence and grand galas category. MAAI, however, smells just as good in pyjamas and a hoody as it does in a posh frock. If not better.

No mischief was committed. Except by the cats. But that’s their job.

Thanks again to everyone for the virtual hugs yesterday. I’m tearing up a little bit thinking about that wonderful, compassionate response.

I’m wearing Sylvaine Delacourte Virgile for the CP, a very good herbal, aromatic vanilla. Their vanilla collection is very well done. I don’t have a lot of vanilla perfumes, and I ended up buying a travel set of two and got another free during a promo sale. So I own Virgile, Valkyrie, and Vangelis.

My work holiday dinner is tonight. It’s just with the coworkers in my department, so it should be fine but I kinda wish I was just going home. Then my boyfriend and I are going to my aunt and uncle’s on Saturday for Christmas dinner. Like some mentioned above, I’m pretty ready for the holiday get togethers to be over! I am, however, really looking forward to another day off for New Year’s next week.

started out with Memo African leather, thank you Koyel. Then sprayed Beautiful vintage, top notes are off but it smells nice later. Then some EL tuberose gardenia, then Creeed aventus. Not so sure about the fuss is with this particular Creed, but I do love so many other Creeds. Hope everyone’s day is well.

Speaking of, does anyone have any experience with Creed Oils? I have the Spring Flower oil I bought this summer at a department store. I wanted to wear it the other day, and it smelled rancid. I’m not a happy camper. It’s been stored in the box in my closet, so idk what happened. Oh well…

Sorry about the oil! Could you take it back to the department store? I assume it wasn’t rancid this summer, but it might be worth a shot if it’s expensive enough (and since it’s Creed, I assume it is).

We are under a blizzard warning. That’s right, folks, a blizzard warning. First of my life lol. And of course is supposed to hit when I am scheduled to fly out to Alabama tomorrow to see my son. :( Keeing my fingers crossed flights don’t get cancelled but if they do oh well. Such is life.

Wearing DSH Slinky Carnation again. Can’t wait to go home tomorrow– my in-laws are pretty much in a rural nowhere small town. My husband and I got dropped off and went in every little store in one block of downtown. So used to being in an area with public transportation and ubers to go do what we want….

I feel ya. My beloved in-laws lived for years in a rural village — very pretty, but nothing there. Truly, there was one tiny store attached to the equally tiny post office. What saved me was that there were two larger, touristy towns within a reasonable driving distance, with lots of cute shops and cafes. I got to know ALL of them intimately!

I was almost too tired to put on perfume after work. It’s almost the feeling of a bad hangover, but i didn’t have the fun the night before. I sprayed on some Chergui tonight.

This vacation/work/vacation business is tiring! At least I have only 1 more day. I will be the only one from my group on in the afternoon as my supervisor leaves at 11:00; most others are off already. But I can’t slack off because its our year-end as well!
