Tuesday scent of the day 12/18

Posted by Robin on 18 December 2018 244 Comments

Tuesday, International Migrants Day and Jacques Pépin's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm off-season but on-project in CB I Hate Perfume M #2 Black March. Tea at the moment is Yunnan Golden Tips Organic from Upton.

Reminder: on 12/21 we're doing What's your number...wear a perfume with a number in the name, if you have one. Suggested by thegoddessrena.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Sieger by Fürstenberg Emperor's Garden porcelain teapot, with tea strainer, is about $500 at Artedona.

Many spritzes from my new Eau Egyptienne, which I’d recommend to any Giacobetti fans out there who also like unobtrusive background scents. It’s lovely – seems like it’s designed to be used more as a pillow spray or pick-me-up than a proper perfume, but does the job when generously applied. Also there’s an affordable 25 ml size, which is how it came to be a blind buy for me :)

    No 5 Eau Premier

My neighbor is off to Paris and offered to pick me up some tea from Mariage Freres and anything from the french pharmacy.

For tea I usually drink black, French Breakfast and Rose de Himalaya are my favorites.
For skincare I have plenty of miceller water from Bioderma. I am looking for a face cream that is soothing and hydrating for these cold winter months. Let me know your thoughts and suggestions. Last year I got some great suggestions and someone on NST mentioned P50 toner that she picked up and it has been wonderful.

From Bioderma I really like Créaline AR and from Avène, Antirougeurs jour crème hydratante jour protectrice peaux sensibles sèches. These are good basic moisturisers that cost around € 15,-

Do you have any tea recommendations?

I love Chandernagor for winter, but it’s a chai type tea and you get your chai specially made. Other favourites include Pleine Lune, Marco Polo, Wedding Impérial and Orchid Noir.
If you are interested in exploring some other French tea houses I would recommend Damman Frère’s Oolong Caramel au beurre salé and Oolong Maison de famille.

I normally wear Kiels Ultra Facial cream or La Roche Posay Lipikar or Cicaplast lotion, but both of those are available in the US, so not really worth buying in France.

In the winter, I add an extra serum for moisture, and really like the Caudalie Vinosource Sorbet…(in the pink tube)…..Then I usually follow up with an Olay cream. Sephora carries it!

I may start using pure lanolin ointment on my lips at night! My lips are just terrible right now….

I use Clarins double serum and some Deciem products. But the Clarins is my favorite.
Alas, you can get it here in the states.

I am just looking for a “french beauty secret” for my friend to pick up for me from Paris. But thank you for your suggestions and good luck with those dry lips! Drink plenty of H20

If you love tea tins, you might also look at the MF website — they have so many pretty tins you can’t buy here.

The MF jams are nice too, although I don’t know if I actually think they’re as nice as the price.

I’m sticking to my Oriza samples so I’m not on project. Wearing Marions-Nous which is a lovely aldehydic floral with a very soft drydown. And it lasts!
I’m dreaming of this gorgeous Oriza Coffret with 10-20 ml. bottles in it, miniature versions of their current bottles with tassels. Unfortunately this coffret does not exist. Still, the sample pack is a good place to start.

Chanel No.5 although it isn’t like any Chanel at all. It’s your typical aldehydic floral where the flowers are a mixture of jasmine, rose and yang-ylang and orange blossom with a gentle animalic dry down. It reminds me of the two aldehydic florals by Nina Ricci that I own, Fleur de Fleurs and Nina. Dry down is not unlike First. Still, it’s very much its own thing and I love it.

I really like that Zoologist do the 10ml sets. Not that I’ve bought one because of shipping costs. But, you know, in theory.

My house will be clean-ish (clean dishes, clean sheets, clean bathrooms, maybe not vacuumed or dusted). We’ll have 6 (3 sons plus friends) staying over Christmas Eve and Day, so I’ll just clean afterwards. I’m more concerned that I’m behind on presents…and just had a credit card compromised which makes it more complicated.

Just got a sample set in the mail so I’m wearing Atelier des Ors Musc Immortel. I may experiment with layering it over Kiehls Musk lotion, just for fun. Compared it side by side with Atelier Cologne Blanche Immortelle and they are noticeably different. The AC is my summer immortel, AdO is more of a winter immortel.

That’s what I wore today, too! I wanted to arm myself in confidence for an early appointment with my mom at the terrific senior activity center where I’m hoping she can go three days a week while I’m teaching this spring. Fortunately, all went well! They loved her and everyone is so kind and caring, she really liked the place. I have a lot of paperwork to do, but a big weight is off my mind. They also offer a lot of advice and support to caregivers. Which I’ll definitely take advantage of.

Ok, I’ve got to add my recent discovery on how to make use of evaporated samples or decants. This will work best probably with decants where you’ve sprayed all you can but still see some oily perfume around the rim that you can’t get out. Run a q-tip along there to soak up what’s left of the perfume and transfer what you can on your body and then use the q-tip to scent a drawer or storage container. I’ve got the scent of Tauer’s Tableau de Parfums Loretta scenting up a plastic storage bin of clothes and it’s wonderful!

It’s in the same vein as Knowing – they are both green/herbal florals. The dry down is where I notice a difference; Knowing has a fruit/woods/greens note, Safari has more indoles in the mid-notes and a warmer dry down from the amber.

I KNOW that I’m projecting a bit more than I usually do, and was a little self-conscious until a nurse stopped by my window and declared that the pharmacy smells soooooo good today! HA HA HA HA :)

I never get compliments because I usually wear so little scent, so I’m gonna enjoy this and hope the Perfume Grinch stays in his area today…. (Sorry Grinch, if I’m louder than our usual agreement…) :)

Happy birthday to Jacques Pepin! I used to love watching his cooking show on my local PBS station. His accent is the best.

Participating today in Amika 001 hair fragrance. I bought it because I love how Amika’s other hair products smell, but I think the scent actually works better as a shampoo than a perfume.

SOTD is Aftelier Alchemy. I just love this stuff and have already bought a backup bottle. I think the only “number” scents I have are a few Chanels (5, 22, and 18) and a vintage Numero Cinq.

My Tauer sample set didn’t arrive yesterday but hoping it arrives today or tomorrow. Little annoyed right now. Had to cancel my nephews’ Christmas gift and get something else for them. My sister’s boyfriend got them the classic Nintendo gaming system and they are not really into the retro thing yet. She got them a Nintendo Switch and asked me to get them a game for it. Had a hell of a time trying to find something appropriate for them that was going to arrive on time. I am going to wear Chanel no 5 in edt the rest of the week. I am going see if I can finish the bottle before the end of the year.

In I Am Trash. Must say that I cannot get the image of the rotting vegetables out of my mind that is part of the PR for this fragrance. I am trying to imagine that the juice came out of a pretty glass flask, which helps a tiny bit. Amazing the power of suggestion. So for me this one is a no so far.

I love Jacques Pépin. My husband wooed me with Pépin recipes while we were dating, and we now own most of his books. Haven’t used them in a few years, but they have a big place in my heart.

I think that would ruin it for me too! I am SURE there are perfumes I like that, if I thought hard about it, would have some garbagey elements to them – but bringing it so sharply into consciousness seems like a real mistake.

So, I do not smell any trash or rot in this scent. I get tart strawberries that dry down to a sheer fruit salad, and then musk. But I keep imagining weird, cheap things floating in the scent and the image of rotten vegetables floating before me…

    What a festive teapot.
Wearing VC&A Bois d’Iris, and enjoying it, maybe partial credit as the label shows a number No 10549 on my bottle which I acquired this quarter.
Also, I tried Miller Harris Tea Tonique: Really liked it, the citrus are delicious, it’s a little spicy, it has the MH drydown signature (a little dusty) and I think I’m getting familiar with mate which is more noticeable in this scent than tea proper. Longevity quite good for this type of scent, four hours and it’s still noticeable although quite close to the skin. I find it a little expensive for what it is, a tea scent needs not cost so much, MH should have a different line of less costly scents.

There’s an old grave in the cemetery for a family of immigrants who must have arrived here around 1870/80. The first-born child has been given the christian name ‘Zelandia’ and I often think about…or rather, imagine….the long journey by sailing ship from Britain and then the naming of the baby in honour of the new land and new life, and wonder how it went for them. She died in 1943 which must be around 65 years old. I am the only NZ born in my family of migrants and was always curious why my parents never returned to England ( even for a holiday) once they came here. I sometimes think about how my life would have been different if they had stayed in Manchester instead of coming here. Wearing Fiele Viola and it is lovely on this grey, drizzly, muggy morning.

Very moving about the grave Kanuka, thanks for sharing. Maybe it was too painful for your parents to return, or the reverse maybe they had had enough of Manchester by the time they decided to emigrate, maybe it’s something you want to find out one day.

I have a first cousin who left Britain as a young adult and headed for New Zealand. He has since made a life for himself there, started a business and a family with the recent birth of his son. When asked about returning to Britain, he states emphatically, “No way. Never.” I don’t know if this is based on politics, economics, or just personal dislike for the country he was born in. But he’s quite sure he will never return. Interesting. No love lost for his motherland.

I find this really interesting how some immigrants go back to visit regularly and others don’t. Of course, sometimes there’s no choice because of money etc.
We go “home” every year (which means two countries since husband and I aren’t from the same one) but one of my friends here in town, same country, same age, same aged kids, hasn’t gone in many, many years. All the other friends keep one half foot firmly planted in their native soil.

SOTD = Le Labo Iris 39

I was originally going to do a no-brainer Chanel week but then someone mentioned Iris 39!

So many perfumes with numbers, so little time. Even the Tokyo Milk perfumes have numbers but no one ever really refers to the numbers.

    Commuting Woes No. 619:
Yesterday, on the way home, I I stood in front of a family of 5 – 3 older teenagers and the mother were seated and the adult male was standing. they got up to leave and their seats were filthy with food crumbs! First of all, eating on the train is not allowed. Secondly, for crying out loud, these were OLDER teenagers who should have veered control over their eating habits. Thirdly, the mother set a bad example by slouching in a very crowded train, including having her legs crossed (the kids were sprawled all over their seats as well). Perhaps I should be thankful none were shaving their body hairs, picking their noses or spitting. We have gotten to the point where we are expected to be tolerant of behaviors that are frowned upon in polite society. Rant over.

I’m not sure what is the cause of the increasing lack of civility nowadays. I wonder if it’s the same everywhere, or if it’s a north american phenomenon? People seem to behave as if they are alone on the planet with no regard for others.

Back when I/we were kids, if a student put his feet on a chair, the teacher would say– do you put your feet on the furniture at home? The student would say no. Today that answer would be yes.

Nr 21 Felanilla, which i am liking more and more. The top notes smell a bit like the old bandaids to my, which i think is fun. Must be the saffron.
Now wearing a small spray of Theo Fennel. Boyfriend will complain soon…

Here’s a week I can participate in! In Chanel 22, generous amounts, because I was clumsy with the little sampler vial.
Succumbed to a blind buy the other day: used half of my theoretical “footlocker money” (=the gift card from the race) to buy a bottle of Climat by Lancome, because I read in some reviews for Amouage Dia that it’s a similar scent. Here’s to hoping! If not, I may just have to host a split come next split meet.

Twins with Eschmeling in No. 22. Mine is from a vintage cologne spray.

Packages are wrapped, mailed, Christmas tips disbursed, holiday concerts sung, baking for others done. Today I’m doing laundry, making cream puffs or eclairs just for me, and maybe going for a pedicure. Then I am doing nothing except reading until Christmas Eve when I’ll join good friends in Sacramento.

That teapot is gorgeous but not $500 worth of gorgeous. Maybe $50, and I’d like it better without the bird.

Twins in more way than one – also done with all xmas singing, though nothing has been baked, but plenty of reading to do to finish book (The Wang vs the world) for bookclub Thursday. Methinks I need to check eBay for Chanel 22 vintage – I did quite enjoy it today.

HdP 1725 this evening, after the gym. A small sideways step from the other aromatic fougere I was wearing this morning: Yohji Homme. Both have a bit of a twist on the classical and have different weights but there are some interesting overlaps, particularly the shared licorice note. The 1725 (Casanova) has more lavender than the re-issued YH. I seem to remember the original YH having more than this.

(p.s. thank you for the kind thoughts about my cat the other day. She’s recovering really well now, which is a fantastic surprise.)

    AG Nuit Etoilee.

I am late posting today. Busy day bringing parents for a doctor’s appointment, then lunch, then shopping at the local mall. It was crazy and fun being at the mall at Christmastime. After shopping my Dad wanted some frozen yogurt. When we walked into yogurt shop, the lady behind the counter said “chocolate & vanilla swirl, right??” My parents go there a lot, lol. After that, it was the pharmacy to pick up prescriptions — mine and theirs. My Mom bought a dancing Snoopy dressed as a reindeer, and put it in my bag. He’s a cute surprise.

It is so quiet now. I am drinking some peppermint tea.
