Tuesday scent of the day 11/27

Posted by Robin on 27 November 2018 277 Comments

Happy Giving Tuesday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in the very comforting Comme des Garcons series 3, Incense: Ouarzazate by Mark Buxton. Tea at the moment is a Ceylon from Upton.

Reminder: 11/30 will be Renegades Friday...wear a perfume by Mark Buxton, Bertrand Duchaufour or Geza Schoen, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: The Decca Records teapot ("A blast from the past, this quirky Decca record teapot is hand made and hand painted by Carters of Suffolk. Not only fun it is also fully functional! Highly desirable to teapot collectors, lovers of retro design or just for tea lovers!") is £47 at Peach Perfect in the UK.

SOTD is St. Clair Scents First Cut because in many ways I see Diane St. Clair as a renegade. A quote from her website-

“With hundreds of natural substances and synthetic molecules available, simply learning one’s materials can takes years. There is then the art of combining and dosing them to achieve the desired effect, which can truly be an exercise in trial and error.

Perfumery, historically and still today, is largely a “closed” industry, open to a select few who mainly study and have mentors within the domain of the large fragrance houses.

It can be challenging to find teachers and mentors as an “outsider.” My case was particularly challenging since, as a dairy farmer needing to care for my cows, the ability to travel for classes and meetings was restricted.”- Diane St. Clair

AND a PSA- yesterday she released a new fragrance, CASABLANCA. It’s an extrait and it sounds sublime-

    https://www.stclairscents.com/shop/casablanca-perfume-extrait

Y’all know I have been wearing perfume for close to half a century on a daily basis. Only a select few perfumers resonate with me- Laurie Erickson of Sonoma Scent Studio, Jessica September Buchanan of 1000 Flowers and now Diane St. Clair of St. Clair Scents. With the closing of SSS I am happy to have found a replacement house. And in a multibillion dollar fragrance industry that seems to be more and more about profit, greed and redundancy/overabundance in releases I would much rather support a one woman indie house that makes extraordinary fragrances with passion, love and intent.

I have tried St. Clair scents. Very well done, in my opinion. And yours also, chocolatemarzipan :)

      SSS has permanently closed ?

I liked the samples, but her bottles are so small – 13 mls. How long does a bottle last you?

Chiming in to say that I visited her website last night, as I saw on Instagram that she released Casablanca. With her new perfume release she has also upgraded to 30ml bottles. I had a slight moment of sadness because I loved that I could buy a bottle from her for under $100 in a small quantity, but alas she currently is still also selling the 13ml “travel size” bottles. I’m curious if this will be only until she uses up her bottle stock, or if she’ll always offer the two sizes.

Also, I may not make it through the day without buying a sample of Casablanca.

Like rabbitsflower mentioned she now carries 30 ml bottles. I still have my 13ml bottle from back in the late spring because usually Mr. Marzipan wears it and it lives on his side of the medicine cabinet ( when it is on him it is like catnip for me…frisky time!!!!). One spray on his chest is all he needs and it lasts for about 12 hours and radiates (me, I have scent eating skin so I do one spray on each wrist and one on the neck-sits closer to the skin for me and does not project as much on me as it does on him). The bottle we have (13ml) is still about half full.

I think you get many enabler pins for proselytizing about her perfumes. I think quite a few of us have purchased the sample set because of you. I definitely plan to buy one of her perfumes in 13ml soon, but I need to spend a little more time with each of them before I decide. And now I also need to try Casablanca.

    SotD = CdG Avignon

Love this stuff, it smells so good with my wool cardigan, freshly out of the cedar chest.

Giving Tuesday! A wonderful reminder to share, so I give you a bit of a poem:

The birds insist on pecking the wooded dark,
    The wooded dark pecks back.
It is time to show the universe what you are capable of
says my horoscope, increasingly insistent this month.
But what I am capable of is staring

at the salt accident on the coffee table & thinking
What sad salt. I admire my horoscope
for its conviction. I envy the consistency, Every day. Every day,
there is a future to be aggressively vague about.

I have Tolu, Woman and Vanille d’Iris and a decant of Ta’if. I rarely wear any of them, so this is a good CP for me to pull them out and revisit. Tolu was my original favorite and how I ended up with the others.

What a great teapot! I’m basking in Or du Serail today, now that it has settled a bit. That initial blast of pineapple is a bit much sometimes, but it’s short-lived, and the sweet tobacco takes over quickly.

Hugs to you! Hope the surgery goes well. Today (every Tuesday) is chemotherapy day for my cat Cole. When I pick him up later I’ll get his weekly status… so I am a mess every Tuesday. The status always seems to be mixed… this is better, that is worse. As the vet says, the roller coaster of cancer treatment.

Meanwhile my cat Kooky has shoved himself between me and the back of my chair, and is complaining that he does not get ALL the chair. I have pointed out to him that there are many other chairs in this house, and he could have picked any of them, so he should stop whining about having to share.

    Good morning Y’all….BRRRRRRRRR!!!!!! :)

At least I smell warm and cozy in Jo Malone Ginger Biscuit! Someday, when my 3 kids are grown and hopefully make me a grandma, THIS is what I want to smell like for my grandbabies! Warm cozy vanilla soft huggable ginger biscuit grandma smell! (My kids are teens now, so the huggable thing is kind of lost on them right now, unless they are feeling extra lovable…LOL)

My Christmas picks are up on YouTube! Click my Avatar for a new video. My middle kid INSISTED that she edit for me (she LOVES to edit videos), so maybe more videos are in the works? We’ll see! :)

I am wearing Bvlgari au The Bleu, drinking a cup of peppermint tea and listening to Adele, Rumour Has It.

We got the Christmas tree down from the attic, and started decorating it last night.

This year is going by too fast for me. I cannot believe we are at the end of November already.

It is a blechy, rainy, cold day here, so I sprayed on Ombre Rose by Jean Charles Brousseau. Powdery rose + suede. Perfect for the days you need a little, scented hug.

That teapot is adorable! I really appreciate stuff that’s unique and not the same old.

Today I’m trying, and loving! Bruma by Cire Trudon. What a beautiful scent. I just wish it lasted longer and didn’t wear so close to the skin. Iris/suede/tonka loveliness.

    How’d everyone survive Cyber Monday?

I bought a small stocking stuffer at a Molten Brown, but I resisted doing more Muddled Plum products.

Other temptations arose, but I resisted. No regrets, which is a good thing. Just hoping that coat/jacket we got my husband (at 50% off) over the weekend fits.

I got their new Jasmine & Sun Rose shower gel. The dry down is lovely. I can’t say I’m thrilled with the quality of the suds as I like lots of bubbles! But it’s a nice change from Rose Jam which I’m – shock! – growing tired of.

I hope the new coat fits too!

I survived the whole weekend until yesterday, but I was very good and bought just one bright mustard t-shirt from Jungmaven to round out my collection from them. I discovered their comfy hemp tees earlier this year and now I have all the colors I want/need (until they release new colors ha). So I spent only $43 including shipping and tax. Probably my best Black Friday weekend ever.

Got most of my Xmas shopping done yesterday! Since all of our family gifts have to be shipped I hunt down free shipping mercilessly. All the easy folks are done. Now I have to wrack my brains for the difficult people. My dad is the worst… if I send him something he doesn’t like, he claims that I sent the gift to his GF and sent him nothing. I swear that the older he gets, the more juvenile he gets…. family, bah.

In the CP today with Aedes Des Venestas by L’Artisan, a beautiful purple bottle and a beautiful BD creation.
Sometimes I feel like I lurk around the perfume universe just following HIM. I love his work and he is the predominant nose in my collection. ( Well he is rather prolific after all!)
I saw a new Mark Buxton that I am curious to try, he’s going after the CdG Avignon feel ….. now I have lost the name, think it is also a natural perfumer house. I will report back when I find my phone note.
    Cheers All!

It is not on rotation at the moment on their website but should be around. I am going to try this one. It is based in a jazz movie of the same name. The candy perfume boy did a write up 2015/05/11. I read it elsewhere as well recently and that write up featured a movie trailer so I know it is available. That’s where he discusses doing an Avignon version of incense..,, his quote. Sounds pretty cool!!

SotD is Tolu. I am loving this cp, as it’s letting me revisit the OJ samples that I didn’t get around to when they first arrived. This is another winner. I appreciate the fact that she makes 8 ml travel sizes, I just wish the sets were customizable. Mine would be: Woman, Champaca, Osmanthus, Fragipani and this one. Maybe a split is in my future.

So every year for Christmas I get each of my kids a book as one of their four gifts (something to wear, something to read, something they want and something they need). Is it bad if I read them first, before I wrap them and put them under the tree? Lol

Just put on a couple sprays of Clinique Wrappings. I have a tiny bottle that I just got on evil bay; based on the color of the juice it could be older, possibly vintage. I missed out on a larger vintage bottle on the bay; I was beat out by someone placing a last second bid over mine. I probably paid too much for this tiny bottle but it smells fantastic. No regrets.

I owe an enabler pin to Smoky Toes!

Going out for a walk around the complex in the MUCH cooler weather here today.

I sometimes use a bidding service on ebay where they place the bid for you at the last possible moment. Gixen is one of them, and it’s free to use. I’m a bit ambivalent about it since I also sell on ebay (less often than I buy – too stressful).

Hey friends, feeling kind of down this morning because we got some bad news at work about the project I’ve been pouring my soul into. It’s not (yet) devastating, but it’s still a bit of a blow.

I smell pretty spectacular in Copal Azur by Duchafour (I took a look at his list this morning and have piles of his scents, so it was quite easy). Isn’t it interesting how many facets of incense can be captured in various perfumes?

Since I am on a perfume no-buy but just can’t pass up good deals, I accidentally spent a lot of money on shoes over Black Friday/Cyber Monday. They’re all supposed to be very comfortable but stylish (they are all Eccos or Cole Haans). There’s only so long I can keep wearing Uggs to work, even if I am a Californian who works in an office with no dress code. I spent a lot more on shoes than I would have on perfumes :( Hopefully I’ll get a lot of good use out of them at least.

I too picked up a new pair of shoes over the weekend and I’m so happy with them. Such a great deal and the kind of shoes that are classics and will last a long time. Hope you’re enjoying her ‘accidental’ haul!

J.Crew loafer, a modern take on the penny loafer. Got a pair in black.. fit is amazing, no pain at all in first few uses and already loving how they are breaking in.

Sorry about the bad news on your project. I spent 10 straight years in the middle of my career having every.single.project get cancelled. At 4 different companies yet! Kindof astounding to think how much I got paid to produce… nothing. Life in Silicon Valley. Nowadays, at my current employer, we crank out multiple chips a year… seems like my career has been deluge or drought.

I also took advantage of shoe sales, but for a much needed pair of waterproof snow boots. Boring and practical, lol.
And you do smell great! I was tempted at one point to hunt down a travel spray of CA, but turns out I loooove the opening but not the drydown, so decided against it in the end.

Ooooh. Snow boots aren’t boring! I saw some super cute ones online but resisted, since we, uh, don’t exactly get snow in my part of California. Also, the best thing is when you get thing you wanted to get anyway on superduper sale :) It feels so fulfilling.

Shoes are important! And I bet you have much more use-hours/days/years “in perfumes” than you currently have “in shoes” – so it was good rationing of resources :)

    SOTD = NVC Trayee

Oh my gawd – everything but the kitchen sink and SPICY!

I will be team BD this week. I have zero zip zilch Mark Buxton. I have all the Geza Shoen OJs in travel spray size and samples of just about all of the Escentric Mokecules; however, I very much prefer BD’s work and will stick with him.

This morning, I exited the station with Farty guy from yesterday. I was prepared with my nose covered. He was wearing the same Big Bird yellow jacket and I made sure to look at his face so I know to not be in the same car if I can help it.

I looked at Consumer Reports to see which printer was recommended and drum roll please…there were more recommended than not which tells me that they’ve become homogenous and I should buy based on replacement ink profile (e.g. individual color toners are better than all in one cartridge since rate of use varies). My goal is to get a printer up and running by this weekend!

FYI, I bought an HP cheap ($50) and did the per-month ink subscription. It’s been very good.

So, I think you are right… it’s really all about the ongoing ink cost.

Speaking of subscription…I saw this toothbrush with a brush head and battery replacement service every 3 months for the princely sum of $5 shipped, including international shipping!

Ran right down yesterday and took advantage of the buy 3 get 3 free, got Hot Cocoa and some gingerbread spice one. Will use half of them as gifts.

Hey, if you are going to have a crazy week, you ought to wear the perfume that makes you feel better! No need to add another stressor to your life.

I understand KellyC. I spent most of the day trying to handle three tasks at once. I hope tomorrow is better.

Your theme is obviously “I smell amazing”. I’m sorry that your office can’t seem to function without you – you must be extremely good at your job.

It’s okay, at least it makes me feel needed!

SOTD = back in Dior’s Poison Girl EdT. The sample protested a little when I spritzed it this morning, but I did not finish it. Maybe tomorrow will do the trick? Anyway, there is something that reminds me of heliotrope in the far drydown of this… very nice!

Oh, forgot to mention that I did see your question from last night, Monica404. I have not tried that particular Hermessence yet. So many things to smell, and so little time! ⏰⏳

It’s been ages since I’ve tried any of the Poisons. I’ll have to try them when I get to Sephora or something.

Wearing L’Eau no. 5 today. My parents left yesterday, and I miss them so I’m wearing this riff on my mom’s signature No. 5.

I’m very late tonight due to being quite busy today with preparations for going to Ann Arbor/U Mich tomorrow plus helping my mom pack one suitcase of clothes for Texas. I borrowed some of her YSL Paris to wear–really like that fragrance and might have to spring for a bottle. I’ve enjoyed reading everyone’s posts today. Keep smelling good, y’all!
